Max Q labels don’t matter. How does the GPU perform relative to the Y740?

As for Clevo PB51ef - I have it and it is in some ways better than 15" Y740 (especially since mobile 2070 is faster than 2070 Max-q version and since it has numpad keys) though there are some quality issues affecting it too, like backlight bleeding (since it also has IPS type of display) or thermal issues with some units (due to poorly applied thermal paste or poor heatsink mounting pressure) or things like slightly misaligned displays and so on. You can read all about them in Clevo section.
Also, I think people who want to "wait more" until "manufacturers will improve cooling" are deluding themselves - no matter how large heatsinks will be in future models or how many exhaust holes there will be or how cool the future CPUs will be - there will ALWAYS be a chance of people receiving a laptop with high temps and thermal throttling simply because the manufacturer has not applied thermal paste properly or has not mounted heatsink properly or put a defective heatsink with uneven surface. This will NOT change. Just make sure to buy laptops from resellers who allow easy returns in case you'll get a defective model with defective heatsink or you don't want to change paste by yourself and you will be fine in terms of cooling ;-)Last edited by a moderator: May 2, 2019 -
Does anyone want to do me a favour and upload the recovery partition?
Hugely grateful to whoever’s willing.
Thanks

Using Firestrike the y740 scores 16,589 graphically vs the PB51EF-G which scores 19,236 graphically. Thus in this test, the 2070MQ is 86% as powerful as the standard laptop 2070.

True ;-) Of course, people here on Notebookreview forums mostly act in a similar way, meaning "hey guys, I got the [insert laptop brand and model number], works great" and then stop posting until they have an issue with it. This is not counting a few senile idiots who just spam hatred towards "Company X" or "Company Y" in various sections (I am not talking about this Lenovo section but just a general observation).
Luckily there are always videos by people like @B0B
https://www.youtube.com/user/satanjamez
or Stephen
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCkTweJExGMqp3NLvzvOn-yg
or Jarrod
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC2Rzju32yQPkQ7oIhmeuLwg
who spend a significant amount of time on showing various details like benchmarks and temperature numbers in various tasks and other details (though none of them are perfect, but they still try). Both Bob and Stephen have done Y740 reviews (Bob did a full disassembly and repaste and Steven did a long video showing performance in games). I don't think Jarrod reviewed it but he reviewed many other models so his channel is also great and pretty useful if you want to compare performance of your laptop with a similar model. -

I'm not comparing anything with desktop versions. Only mobile GPUs. And Nvidia doesn't designate full powered mobile 2070 as "Max P", neither is any other manufacturer (except Samsung, but they're "special"). The whole thing will only confuse people since they might think there are 3 versions of mobile 2070: regular mobile 2070 (which is labeled just as "2070" by most manufacturers and resellers and which has a suggested TDP of 115w - for example when anyone goes to Sager site all they will see is "2070" for a regular mobile 2070), 2070 "Max P" (which is same exact thing as regular mobile 2070 but some people think it's "cool" to add "Max P" even though you won't see the "Max P" definition on sites like Sager's own or MSI or Asus) and 2070 Max-q (which is downclocked and underpowered version of mobile 2070 with suggested TDP of 80-90w). This is why I don't believe "Max P" should be used anywhere.
Edit: let me give a visual example. Let's say you have a conversation with person, where you suggest that "2070 Max P is better than 2070 Max-Q", and let's say that person goes to Sager's site. What does he see? Something like:
Then he would go like "hmm... there's no 2070 Max P... I wonder if that 2070 in NP8356 is better than 2070 Max P and 2070 Max-Q that were mentioned... I guess I should ask".
See what I mean? Adding extra "Max P" can be confusing to at least some people because you won't see these letters on such sites, and to prevent confusion it's easier to just NOT use "Max P" at all.
P.S: Sorry to everyone for taking this whole thread off-topic.Last edited by a moderator: May 3, 2019 -

So how high does the 2070 MQ usually hit?
Because I'm getting 1700-1800 around 65c that's before looking into fan curve tweaks. Though I do hit max fans for optimum voltage.
And still pretty quiet. -
What makes sense is to limit the overall confusion and clearly state 3 different versions.
This is from someone who deals with this misinformation every single day. It’s different on forums like this where most of us are on the same page -

Just now with the 20 series that mobile gap has opened back up again even if it's more a power limit instead of chip builds. -
finally got it

Took pictures, a couple are exaggerated but it looks like upper right and lower left are the issue, if it was upper part of display it wouldn't bug me that much. This is just from startup haven't jumped into windows and messed with brightness settings yet. Also will put a screen-protector on so not sure how that is going to affect it.
Still I don't have too many options in the 17in market, and the workstation market I need some serious cash to get into that game.
Still webcam is on the top
and Numpad is there...so at least people can't complain about that.

Though I am concerned since hardware canucks was critical about the intel speedstep, kinda hard to believe lenovo would overlook something like this. -

mines got a little bit of bleed in the lower right only noticeable at a certain angle so its not that big. There is some coil whine as it revs up but again too slight to be a problem.
Running test on things after undervolting overall seems to do fine. Though I've noticed some games have a real swing when it comes to temps like going from 80s to 91 peak briefly. Desktop seems to hover around 48-56 when web surfing.
These okay numbers?
Also Vantage changed again. Where is the Max Fan option? -
Mine was a bit like that but in the lower right mainly. But it’s no big deal. Ain’t games on mine yet. But I can’t really utilise my machine properly because the drivers do NOT install properly.
So just waiting to get some recovery media unless some kind person on the forum is happy to upload the recovery media

I almost feel dumb asking but is it safe to put a 9mm 2.5inch HDD into my y740? The reason I want to do this is because I ordered the 256 PCIe SSD only y740 and I'm quickly running out of space. I also want to upgrade the 256 SSD to a WD Black 500gb PCIe. So I'll need to transfer everything over to the HDD when I replace the SSD correct? And I had this 1TB 9mm HDD laying around from my PS4 Pro when I upgraded it to a 2TB hybrid drive.
I've now installed the 9mm HDD but I definitely had to force the screws down and now I see a slight bulge on the palm rest where the HDD is installed so it seems a 7mm HDD is the right fit. Could I be running the risk of breaking something or having an overheating issue? Thanks for any and all advice!!Last edited: May 4, 2019 -
Also seems highly unrealistic to expect the death of backlight bleed by 2020, from any company. -
However, my experience is with two Thinkpads (X1C6 and E485 - both current models) in the US. I have no clue about any other setup.
For the Thinkpads, it's basically a corporate-style Windows setup, with all of the Lenovo stuf SCCM'd into the Windows install package. -
I'll take a VA panel over IPS usually. VA is usually cheaper, much better contrast, and no back light bleed. OLED is the expensive option, but obviously higher quality.
I like the y740 and if I needed a laptop NOW, it would probably be the choice. However, I don't think RTX is worth the upgrade from GTX at the time, so I'll wait until the next GPU and a processor gen or two passes. If I didn't have a laptop, the Y740 seems like a good choice. I bought a 17" Y740 back in February, reviewed it, and was ultimately disappointed with it. Backlight bleed and performance that didn't justify the cost to me were the main motivations for the return. Performance wasn't a large enough jump from my current set up, but a lot of people have older set ups or no set up at all. -

So what's the max undervolt people are getting before performance impact?
-
How can I get the cooling boost mode back in Vantage?
Does anyone have the older app package file?
Mine is a 15" pre built 2070MQ model. Performing pretty well, CB15: 1226 (1193-1230, multiple back to back runs). -
Fastidious Reader Notebook Evangelist
Mines getting upward of GPU 1800 sometimes. though then the CPU Can spike around 90c not tested the Rendering speed yet. -
-
I just got 1226 CB15 score with -150mV on the CPU cache and -250mV on the CPU core, I pressed FN+Q from my Lenovo Y500 (which is what I am using to control the Y740 remotely) and I am passing keyboard shortcuts to the Y740 using teamviewer.
The score is what I have been getting consistently, max power pulled by the CPU was 60W in core temp. -
Laptop is pretty much vanilla right now. Can’t even mess with that vantage app cos it won’t install.
And I thought Alienware drivers was a pain

For those that have the Y740, what CPU temps are you guys getting when idle and gaming? did you undervolt?
Idle: CPU package is around ~45 deg C
gaming:: CPU package averages around 80 deg C, and gets the occasional peak of the mid 90s -
Fastidious Reader Notebook Evangelist
Dunno its getting hard to judge at the moment having a real FPS issue Like testing Overwatch and the numbers won't go past 60 in game. Cutscene its getting 144 but then it drops to 60-50 again. Is there a setting I'm missing?
-
-
Fastidious Reader Notebook Evangelist
Dunno that one seems to still arbitrarily glitch out in games. tested the FFXV bench and it handled that buggy as it's known to be. Clocked about 90 in places settling in around 70.
So not the system at least. -
So I finally got my 17" Y740 out of the box and started doing some very basic setup. Haven't had time to play any games yet, but the system is incredibly quiet during idle, and the the overall feel and finish of the laptop is nice.
I'm finding the display oddly dim, though, even when I crank the brightness up to full. I really doubt it is anywhere close to the advertised 300nits, at least in my case. And yeah there is some light bleeding, but it's less distracting than the low-brightness. -
It's already been said...the display is not going to hit 300 nits
-

Own or Disown just did an updated vid comparison of the Y740 to the Dell G7
His stats showed his 15 inch Y740 somewhere along 367 nits
Lenvo needs a better panel sourcing method as panels are very random. -
Or LG needs to quit having panels that vary so much.

OWNorDISOWN was able to pull in scores close to 2080mq using a 2070mq after undervolting success. Sorry to those Dell G7 owners.....

Interesting video considering some reviewers claimed that the 2070 Max-q in this model is 80w version. Perhaps this is just another proof that the official TDP rating is irrelevant since it can go as high as the system power limit allows it to.

Hi guys,
yesterday..finally my 740 15" 2070 max q model has arrived after 7 weeks of waiting.
As promised here is my short review of it after reading every post in this forum and watching every single video about it in youtube.
Build quality:
The build quality compared to other brands is very good for me. I like the grey aluminium surface. I can't get any fingerprint on it.
From all laptops i have tested so far the Razer Blade 15 advanced has the best build quality but the fingerprints on it and many other cons drove me crazy after a few days.
Backlight bleed:
Yes it has backlight bleed, but there is just a very very small bleed in the lower right and lower left corner.
There is so little bleeding for me the display is nearly perfect. Way better then on my tested Gigabyte Aero 15 x v8, Razer Blade 15 and Alienware Laptops.
Coil Whining:
It's very hard on my unit to "create" the coil whining. The SSD does not have any kind of coil whining in my unit. The CPU does not have any as well.
If i open GPU-Z and do the stress test from the tool i hear the RTX2070 is working. It is not a classic coil whining i hear a quiet rattle and cat whining sound (i try to make a short video for you).
This graphic chip whining sound does not appear very often. I tested some games in Fortnite when i am in the lobby the rattleing sound was hearable.
But i think Lenovo has managed this also much better than razer, gigabyte and alienware does. I hope the whining won't get more in the future.
"Coil Whining sound" from the RTX2070 iphone 30 cm away from the keyboard
--> https://vocaroo.com/i/s0vRE15k6IJT <--
Temperatures:
In Idle i never reach the low 40's °C on the cpu chip. The RTX2070 is at 35 C° when hybrid mode is on.
On massive stress tests and games the CPU reach the mid 90's and the GPU the high 80°.
Undervolting possibility:
I was able to undervolt the 8750h on the gigabyte, razer, alienware to -150 -100mv cpu core + cache.
At the y740 i am able to undervolt the CPU to -180mv cache and my sweet spot for the vcore is -250mv. I have the more performance in the games i have tested, and more benchmark points in cinebench with this setup. I have not undervolted the gpu yet. But i am possitive surprised about that result.
Fan noise (my personal torture with gaming laptops and the reason why im in this forum):
I have unboxed the laptop plugged in the power cord i was holding my thumbs biting on my lipps and turned the machine on..
First no sound from the fans (because it was cold).
After 2 minutes the fans started. Sadly they also have the high pitch high frequent noise like all laptops had i have tested so far.
The high pitched fan noise is not so extreme like on the razer blade advanced model but its almost there.
On full blast the fans are loud, but much quieter than other laptops.
But with the y740 i have the high pitched noise always in my ears, i cannot say for now if this will bother me so hard in the next days that i have to return it.
I don't think i have better ears than hundreds of members of this forum or round about 50 youtubers who did reviews of this laptop.
But i don't know why nobody can hear that. Because it is deffinately hearbale.
I asked my wife and my children as well. They didn't have to concentrate very much on the fan noise to hear the high pitched sound.
At idle: I found out that the fans are completly off if the CPU is round about 43 C° (what won't happen at all).
I let the laptop alone for 15 minutes and i still could hear the fans in another room.
Yes they are super quiet! But the high pitched noise made me hear it.
The FN+Q command trick from zoneykid works for me. But the fans also won't stop with that trick.
My synology NAS is quieter than the laptop in full idle. My homeoffice is in a 50 square meters sized room.
There are 3 different idle fan speeds. Round about 50's, 45-48°C and >43° C they are off.
10 Mins desktop idling, doing absolutly nothing (max 2% CPU load), iphone recorded this 30 cm away from the fan exhaust:
--> https://vocaroo.com/i/s1dzrZrblugr <--
So my bottom line after 3-4 hours of testing this device.
It's quiet the best laptop which i have ever tested.
But sadly the fan noise (even if its indeed much quieter than from other laptops) is not so flat as many many people wrote me before.
Maybe i am too sensitive but i try to make a short clip for you guys if i have more time.
Now i am fighting with myself because all the other points: back light bleed, temps, undervolting, performance, build quality are so well done at my unit.
Hope this helps someone out there and i will post some more informations if you guys are interested in the next days.Last edited: May 7, 2019Arondel likes this. -
Bought the Y740 15" 2070mq for use at work and gaming at home. If one removed the mechanical hard drive, would it be possible to put the battery from the 17" legion there instead? It seems like it would fit, but the voltages are different. 11,52V for the 57wh in the 15", and 15,36V for the 76wh in the 17". Im planning to swap the hard drive for an m.2 sata ssd 256GB as I have one of those laying around. Using an msata to m.2 adapter card.

It appears like the Y740 refresh info with the 9th gen i7 processor is up on the Indonesian website, also looks like the RTX 2080 may be available in the revision! No release dates as of yet. Really unsure whether to send back my current 15 inch and wait or keep it.
