    Have you ever used a laptop that met your requirements for silence/fan-noise? I have used or been around dozens of models over the last 15 years or so, most of them gaming-capable, and I've never seen or heard a silent one that was also capable of gaming. Good luck in your quest!

    Gaming laptops from the past 5-6 years or more ago were bigger, they had more room and so they were quieter.
    Today smartphones laptops everything must be thinner, lighter but should guarantee great performance - these are old physics you cannot have both.

    As i wrote in my previous posts in general i have no problem with a loud gaming laptop.
    But i have a problem with a high pitched / high frequent / whisteling fan sound.
    Also if a laptop is doing nothing (you are on desktop you have no programs open, the cpu is idling at 1% load the temps are below 45°C) in my opinion a laptop should turn it's fans off.

    The Alienware 15 for example. If you watch youtube videos with it, have some browser taps open the fans are standing still they are not rotating at all.
    But this laptop was double as loud under load as the y740 is and has a horrorble high pitched noise as well.
    I've got a headache after a 2 hour gaming session.

    Another example:
    You are wearing a headset and you play a shooter. The enviroment is silent in the game you want to hear the footsteps.
    And you don't hear the footsteps but this: https://www.reddit.com/link/8w3j18/...usertext&utm_name=razer&utm_content=t3_8w3j18

    I don't know why I'm the only one who bothers.

    Yes your right maybe i won't be happy with gaming laptops but the y740 comes very very close.
    I will test more with it in the next days i will see if i can live with that noise.

    I'm not attacking you at all, I re-read my post and it may have sounded like it, sorry! I'm nearly 40 and definitely have hearing loss (too many punk concerts as a teenager...), that would be unpleasant to always hear an annoying noise. For reals, hope you find something that isn't obnoxious to you (or that you get used to the Y740!) Still waiting on mine, ETA 2 weeks...

    Don‘t worry i haven‘t understood it as an attack. :)

    I wasn‘t often in a concert or discothek when i was a teenager but thats a good point my colleague told me the same today.
    But in this case its just a benefit for you to not hear that than you can enjoy a very very good laptop!

    In my review i forgot to say something about that beautiful hdr display - i love it!

    Yes i know what it means to wait so long. Lenovo sent it out 8 days ago then UPS did a mistake and they were driving the box through some european countries for no reason.... :mad:
    I hope for you that you get yours asap!

    Maybe someone who read my post have some minutes to do the same tests. If you guys really have a total flat fan sound i will call Lenovo.

    Cheers,
    Itzap ;)

    Hm, that’s surprising. When my laptop is idling I can’t even tell the fans are on. I literally have to put my ears right next to the exhaust to check.

    At any rate I undervolted mine to -120mv, and while playing anthem it would still occasionally spike to 91-95 for a few secs. Is that normal? Last night I adjusted it more.....tried to get it to -180 but it instantly rejected my efforts. So it seems to be stable at -150 on cpu and cache.... and I just randomly chose -50 for gpu. Haven’t had the chance to try it out in game yet. So, is it normal for it to still throw 90’s when undervolted, and what are yalls tips or settings for gpu? Thanks.

    Oh, it’s 15” with 2070.

    Every temperature is normal unless you see thermal throttling. In which case I'd suggest getting decent thermal paste and try repasting it. Just don't use IC Diamond, it can easily scratch the CPU and GPU surface. This still might not help because you might have a unit with uneven heatsink surface, but you can then just return it for replacement.

    Despite this. You won’t find this level performance this quiet let alone with price.
    I honestly think your expecting way to much.
    If you’ve had a “perfect” performance laptop previously and you looking for a newer alternative, I’d love to know what it was.
    My aw15 1070 was way louder and I put up with it because it’s performance till this came out. It’s night and day on load.
    I think if you don’t stick with it you won’t be satisfied because it’ll be as good as you’ll get and I think you’ll end up reordering again.
    If you find something that does do better, please do come back and tell.

    Different people are sensitive to different frequencies. Other people might not hear those high pitch frequencies or it may not bother them. Unfortunately with tiny fans you will always have some degree of this. If this really bothers you - perhaps you should not be playing games on laptop and just use desktop for that. If you still want to play games on laptop - perhaps you should return this and keep trying other models. I suggest trying larger and thicker laptops because larger fans should be less noisy overall, especially when using lowest power GPU and CPU. For example, MSI makes a laptop with similar CPU but in much thicker chassis with larger fans, GT75. Perhaps you should try that instead.

    Hi guys. Do you have a problem with a wobbling lid while typing?
    In all reviews that I watched, the lid of laptop wobbles from the slightest contact. This is only factor that stops me from buying this laptot.

    I'm not noticing a lid wobble or anything whilst typing or even moving the laptop. The hinge is not the tightest but definitely not that loose

    Hey,

    i guess mid 90C cpu temps are high for the y740.
    I don‘t speak for my unit i speak for all the hundred posts i have read from users and all the videos and comments i have seen.
    Most youtubers do not hit the mid 80‘s under max load.
    My unit can also hit the mid 90s with max fans.

    I recommend to watch bobs throttle stop video. If your stable with -150mv on cache then undervolt your vcore seperately a bit more.

    But also for my unit: hard undervolting does not reduce the peak heat much.

    Try to get more room and a good air flow for your laptop the environment can depend a lot in some situations.

    I have watched 10 times Stevens (Own or Disown) video about testing some games and undervolting. He has 10-15 degree better temps in every game he has tested than i have.
    And i have tried the exact undervolt settings, driver versions, tools and game settings he used.

    In this video he also gave the viewers the chance to hear his 48db measured fan noise.
    Sadly he recorded this from the front and way to far away from the device. So it sounded flat and low (i guess most of the microphones have to much filters that they do not catch the high frequent noise).

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Much thanks to everybodys contribution i really appreciate every estimation from you.
    @sisqo_uk I have to correct myself. In my previous post i meant the Alienware m15 laptop. But last summer i have tested the alienware 15 with GTX1070 OC.
    The fans were very loud under full load, but this laptop had a total flat fan noise, no whining or high frequent noise and in idle + normal desktop usage the fans were at 0 RPM.
    I returned this cause of the new RTX series and this was the first laptop i bought since 2012 -i thought there are some quieter books out there.
    A combination of the 0 RPM fan noise on desktop usage + the super flat low frequent fan noise of the AW15 1070 and overall max fan volume from the Legion y740 would be a perfect machine i guess. But yes my friends told me the same, maybe i am expecting to much from those devices. :rolleyes:
    @AlexusR Thank you for the tip about the GT75. If i cannot live with the Lenovo Y740 maybe this is my absolut last try.
    I hope that Zoneykid will read my posts. I found out that the fans are at 0 RPM when the CPU package temp is below 45°C.
    If we find a way to manually adjust this level to 55°C then we all will have a totally silent laptop at desktop usage.
    I am not a good programmer but i will do my best.
    Many youtubers are complaining that lenovo gaming laptops have no fan adjustment tools / a manual fan curve.
    Bottom line: If i bother you guys with my fan discussions please let me know. If not i appreciate that we have a plattform like this were we are able to conduct intense discussions about a nearly perfect and great laptop. :)
    Ok. I’m in need of great help here. I ordered my laptop without an OS. My issue is that the drivers didn’t install as supposed to. I’ve had suggestions on here which still didn’t work.
    I’ve been in touch with Lenovo and they sent me a recovery usb. And it keeps preloading fail. Tried 3 times. I’m at my wits end with this.
    Is there anyone willing to copy a clone of their factory os with on so I can set myself up. I’ve been with the laptop a week now and I’ve not used it or any game because I’m trying set it up with that vantage and other factory software that sorts audio etc.
    I’ve never been so defeated by something like this till now. I think that’s the only way around this for me.
    They don’t install. For example the vantage install just prompted error upon launch and said to restart computer because of it.
    But I’ve got round it all now. I got went back to the usb stick for the 4th time. When it came back to that error, there’s nothing you can do but look at that screen or press control-alt-delete and it brings options. Because the install puts you as user “administrator”, I selected change password because what I found previously was that it wouldn’t load on a restart prompting to do the reinstall again with out allowing you an attempt to login in and see what you could do from there.
    Doing this allowed me into an unusable login where the dos boxes I saw started to continue installing stuff after staring at it for a time thinking “surely there’s away around this”.
    This meant every time it restarted during this I had to put the password I set up 2 or 3 times. No idea if it would work correctly in the end but I’m happy to say it’s set up as it should of being. But had I not set a password this wouldn’t of worked obviously seeing that 3 times previously.
    The software has all loaded. All outdated drivers (only two, 1 being the vantage software ironically.) updated properly from the vantage software.
    The first thing I’m doing is a macrium reflect back up. Then I’ll have a little mess with some benchmarks.
    Then I’m slap some games on finally after a week
    I’ve added a pic, it’s not much but I’m just delighted I can move forward now.
    I have a clone of my m.2 SSD that came with my y740. It was a 256gb and I replaced it with a 500gb. It's now just sitting in a drawer being unused. I could ship it to you if you would pay for the shipping and ship the SSD back to me. You would then need to enter the Bios on startup and set the boot order.
    Reading the last post about temperature points makes sense to me, as they coincide with my experience.
    I've mainly been using Throttlestop to manage the temps, during the day there's enough ambient noise or I have something playing so I leave it at full power, and when I go to bed I set it to a profile where I disable turbo and set the clock modulation to 75% of maximum.
    I did this with my old laptop (Sager NP6350/Clevo W350ETQ) as well, I had to lock the multiplier somewhere between 12-16 to keep the CPU low power enough to not turn on the fans in the middle of the night.
    I also have SpeedShift enabled in all profiles which may also be helping as I notice that it tends to prefer lower frequencies. Along with this I'm using hybrid graphics as I mainly use on a 60hz ultrawide monitor anyways.
    So with this my bedtime routine becomes:
    1. Set ThrottleStop to bedtime profile
    2. Use fn+q or ctrl+shift+1 to set fans to max, the goal is to force the laptop to cool down and bring the temps down low enough for the fans to turn off and with the profile they should stay off since idle power is reduced.
    3. Go brush my teeth or do something else for a little while
    4. Use fn+q to turn off max fan power
    Mine got pushed ahead by a month and has been delivered. Ordered on 21st of April, delivered on the 2nd of May.
    It benchmarks well too, 1200-1230 CB15 & 4300 Unigine Superposition. Both scores are with UV(proc) & OC(GPU).
    Feeling bad for you though :( but it will be worth the wait :).
    PS: backlight bleed is not noticeable in my unit (15" 2070MQ).
    -------
    UPDATE: Can somebody confirm if they still have the UI controls for maxing out the fans? My Vantage got updated and I lost the fan control. Can we downgrade the Vantage?
    Hello zoneykid, nice to hear from you!
    Yesterday i did some more deep tests i also found out if you let the system cool down with max fans on desktop for a few minutes.
    Then you have a 100% silent system for a while (if you don't do much CPU intense things).
    Yes Throttlestop is great to get some more minus degrees on your cpu i will follow your suggestion and i will add a profile like yours - appreciate your tip!
    I have played Fortnite for 2 hours yesterday 50% volume on my headphones.
    I heard the high pitched noise everytime i played. In build battles i heard the high pitched noise better then my opponents footsteps.
    So i was feeling a bit sad and decided to open the back of the system.
    Surprisingly the high pitch noise nearly disappears when the backcase is removed.
    I am pretty sure that it is generated through the small anti dust wholes in the back aluminium case.
    The rest of the high frequent noise comes from the cooling fins on each sides of the heat exhaust.
    Some of the alu fins are a bit sharp.
    The small fans itself do not generate this noise.
    I have reassembled then the back cover and did the same tests - the high pitched noise was back again.
    So as every laptop needs for sure this anti dust filters every laptop will have this noise that's my final conclusion.
    I can hear the noise much stronger when the fans are not running at full load.
    So i will play some more games with FN+Q and i will see if this bothers me less.
    The original ones are on the website. I dunno if they’ll install. I couldn’t get them to or any. But since you already got it on there it might just “downgrade” without messing it up. Failing that a system restore back to before it updated should help
    Just use the keyboard shortcut I've mentioned a few times now
    Fn+q
    Or
    Ctrl+shift+1
    Both work to toggle the fans to max speed
    Failing that you could go back a few pages to my dsdt post where I found the values to toggle max fan speed using a couple interesting utilities.
    Interesting, I might try testing using some fabric as a filter over the holes to see if that smoothes out the sound.
    Anyone having the issue of the screen being dimmed each time you shut down and start backup? Adaptive brightness is not checked on Windows 10. I've read where other Lenovo users are having this same issue. Just hope to find a solution so I don't manually have to adjust it back up each time.
    And today Lenovo is listing the same config as the one I ordered (15" 8750/2070maxq/256ssd+1tbhdd) with "2-3 days" shipping estimates. If people buying today are getting theirs before me, I'll be slightly annoyed.
    That is lame. I am hoping there is some kind of mistake and it will ship sooner than they say.
    I ordered the 15" with a 2060 to mess around with when I want to game and watch TV in the bedroom. If it is actually another 8 week wait then I will probably cancel the order. I've been wanting to try our VR anyway, maybe I'll buy a headset and upgrade my 6700k/1080 desktop.
    Hardest part is the price... got it for a little over $1300 after tax. Might make it worth it wait.
    I'm with you on that. They listed the same part number as mine this morning with "ships same day" shipping. I promptly got on chat and asked why mine isn't shipping yet if they obviously have stock in the US. Passed around to 4 different agents, one tried to argue that it was a different model, even though specs and the part number were identical, I finally got to a supervisor, best he could do was promise to expedite my existing order. I asked them to simply create me a new order with this ships-same-day stock and honor my original price, but that is apparently impossible for Lenovo sales reps to do. Would have been $200 more to get it today than what I paid a week ago...
    My favorite bit - I was promised a $100 credit after my order ships because I already threatened to cancel, but I didn't write down the name of the person that promised it. I brought it up again to the supervisor, he responded: "As I can see here, we can only process $97.01 compensation on our end". I LOL'd.
    Ah, that’s unfortunate. I got two three separate discounts from them, and asked for email confirmation each time. I was sent email confirmation with a compensation number each time and they were all honored.
    LOL "We're sorry sir, your extensive time delay and frustration is not worth the extra $2.99 to make a $100 compensation."
    I'd bet if that laptop were ordered today, even with the shown same day shipping, ift wouldn't ship until June or July. I think they're selling laptops they don't have!
    I'm going to try the chat after work today and see what they'll do for me. If they take off $100 I might wait. $1200 for an 8750H, 512gb SSD, 2060, g-sync, with great cooling... cant find that anywhere else for that much money.
    Exactly what I paid back on March 28th for the nearly the same specs. You're getting a 512gb SSD but I took the smaller 250gb. Couldn't be more pleased with my decision. I did upgrade the SSD from a 250gb to a 500gb m.2. The laptop is great!
    Lol your lucky you got short of 2.99 what was promised.
    I paid more and rang up twice and got NOTHING and I ordered the 8th March. Received 3rd of May.
    Receiving that in a week is pretty good business for the customer I think.
    Haha, yeah, I'm happy with the compensation they offered, it was just hilarious how random that restriction was. Hope mine doesn't take too long, almost 2 months like yours will drive me crazy. I understand 3-4 week delays on custom-built machines, but mine was sold to me as a pre-built-ships-in-5-7-days, to have that jump to 2 months is just insane. They know what is in stock and on the boat/airplane, it definitely seems like they're overpromising and then struggling to fulfill the orders. Either that or their supply systems are an absolute mess.
    Yeah thing is in the uk the prebuilt options was limited supply and shipping in 3-4 weeks. The custom one I had was 5-7 business days. How I held out I don’t know. I said I’d cancel the order. They offered to cancel my order on both phone calls. They prob called my bluff, but I had to stick cos it was the only laptop I wanted.
    Well I tried their chat after work and they said they couldn't help me. They told me to call customer service.
    Guess I'll give them a call next time they're open and see what's going on... the wait time is nearly 20x longer than their website says. Something isn't right!
    Sorta. A lot of people have reported either or. The 80W and 90W vbios are real things. Lenovo keeps it at 80W until you activate the turbo fan mode, then it switches to 90W.
    Yep that’s what happens. I been testing it both ways. With the fans all maxed I get nearly 7000 graphics for timespy which is what ownordisown was hitting.
    Otherwise as it is I was getting what notebook check got around 6500 graphics score.
    According to these two pics. That was the difference on vs off on rainbow siege on ultra.
    Interesting. I was wondering about this because on my 2019 Omen 15t 2070MQ, the GPU-Z page is identical in specifications to the Y740.
    In "Performance Mode" on the HP Command Center, my HP boosts to 88-92w whereas the standard setting caps at around 78w.
    I ran into this video, some information about the upcoming Y750. Starts at 2:40.
    He mentions Thinkpad inspired keyboards for the Y750. I hope they decide to go with standard keyboard layouts. I am repulsed by the current keyboard layouts on the 15 and 17" models.
    So far, on the Division 2 with ultra settings...I'm getting 86 frames on Average, 60-65c temps on the gpu and 76c temps on the CPU with a 125mv undervolt.
    Man, this thing is just kicking butt.
