Yeah when I have a chance to stress it for a while I will. I don't really hear it right now or after fire strike, maybe it gets better as the system warms up/happens only at start up?

Hi guys,
I successfully flashed the Razer Blade 15's vbios of (90W) TPD on the same 2070 MQ (80W) TDP thats in the Y740 15
Performance gains were pretty amazing and temps were not even any higher but only thing is I lost the functionality of the 2 mini dp...which means I couldn't use my g-sync monitor so I reversed back to stock for now.
I think this is because the Razer has only 1 mini dp and my laptop (TongFang 15: PCSpecialist Recoil 2) has 2.
Does the Y740 15 have 1or 2 mini dp ports? and is it 1.3 or 1.4? Because if its the right setup I might have to pick one up, in fact I didnt realise they were releasing this Legion Y740 at such a good price or I would've picked it instead I think and might have to!
Thanks for letting me know! I would IMMENSELY appreciate it.Last edited: Feb 14, 2019 -
That said, my 17" has only 1 mini dp port. I wouldn't think the 15" has more than the 17".Zill likes this. -
Yes I did notice that the 15 Y740 has 1 mini dp, I found a picture of it eventually... so it should work
But now I'm thinking of flashing the 115W vbios of the 17 inch version of my laptop as its the same manufacturer and I will just adjust the clockspeed of the gpu so it doesnt get too toasty. Should work but I'm juts checking that both GPU boards are physically the same because if the 115W GPU bord has a beefier power delivery I could damage my gpu or mobo etc...
My theory is that its much cheaper and simpler to make 1 gpu board design and just limiting the power via firmware (vbios) which I think is what is happening here but I'm just playing it safe and also waiting for a better 230W psu
The lenovo Y740 looks really sweet tho but if I can boost my gpu capabilities I'll be very happy with my Recoil 2Last edited: Feb 15, 2019 -
My Firestrike score is about 1000 below what comparible specs are getting! (16k-17K)

edit: Can't sleep and procrastinating so did some benches. Aida64 leads to Power Limit Throttling in about 30 seconds. Pushed the XTU undervolt to its limits, seems the max I can get to is -.175v before crashing. Still have power limit throttling. Going to mess with the turbos and get with the throttlestoping :/
Heat spiked to 90C at one point, but quickly dropped back into the high 70s and low 80s. Acceptable, but not ideal.
edit 2: FINALLY. Found a nice sweet spot in Throttle Stop.
To make it easy for people, follow @B0B 's awesome tutorial:
https://imgur.com/a/XywsJVk
Then, follow these settings on the left, the values under Turbo Ratio Limits. Eliminated both thermal and power limit throttling completely and kept temps under 80C.
A reddit user just told me this model is being recalled due to low quality screens (lol my immediate reaction the moment I turned it on) and perhaps a motherboard issue - but we'll see about that. Obviously, just a rumor from a random redditor atm. (If you're reading this, I respect you but I must remain skeptical until I receive official word!)
I uploaded a few minutes of Ray Tracing BFV and am currently Aida64ing for a long, sustained test.
With this current throttlestop profile I'm actually quite happy with the laptop. I haven't even undervolted the gpu or changed the vbios of the gpu yet.
edit:
Undervolted the gpu and pushed an extra 100mhz out of the gpu. Scores in firestrike are higher in graphics, but lower in combined (considering the lowering of turbo). However, I can get a really decent score in Firestrike if the system is cold and I only undervolt (don't decrease turbo). But, that isn't sustainable and after 2-5 minutes will lead to consistent power throttling. With my current settings I reach 80C after a massive stress test from Aida64. Intel XTU stress test and Firestrike don't even break the 60s. Tomorrow I'll get some nice gameplay and push these overclocks even further.Last edited: Feb 15, 2019PJPeter likes this. -
Thanks for all the info guys!
I heard there was a new version of the Lenovo Vantage software coming - so with that update now there is no custom fan speed controls? That's a big problem for me.
Haven't heard anything about a recall but a lot of people are unhappy with their backlight bleed.
Really interested in more details on the VBIOS modding/upgrading. Back when I worked at ATi/AMD I made some custom VBIOS builds. But it's been awhile.
Thanks,
Peter
P.S. My RTX2060 Y740 15" order from Feb 3 has now slipped forward from a March delivery date to April... :/Last edited: Feb 15, 2019 -
Hi guys!
I received my 17inch Y740 with 2080 Max-Q yesterday. Overall I am pretty happy with the laptop. The build quality is excellent. After undervolting it for -.155 I got 17353 score in Fire Strike (20181 graphics and 16613 Physics) with Turbo Fan enabled. CPU temperatures maxed at 71c and GPU at 59c. I am going to test it today with some games.
The only big Con for me is the light bleed. It is quite noticeable. I was about to close my eyes on it, as it is the only thing I don't like so far, but it seems that the problem is widespread and as was mentioned in previous post they are thinking about recall... I understand that it is a rumor but still makes me nervous, and that thing about motherboard issue. I hope that its just a rumor, as I really like the machine.
Also would really appreciate the info on Vbios modding. I am also considering doing it, as it seems the GPU could perform much better in this chassis.
Thanksvictorgm likes this. -
Could you send us some pics of the light bleeding? I thought that it was just a problem of the 15" due to the thin bezels...but as the 17" has big bezels, I dont understand why it keeps happening...about the recall, I just read one comment on reddit, but nothing official atm
@PJPeter I just checked and if you customize a model on Lenovo Canada, it should ship in 5-7days...why dont you cancel your order and make a new one? or it is much more expensive by customizing it?
Hopefully the light bleeding can be solved/is not that much...as for architect works with Photoshop, etc. is kind of important!PJPeter likes this. -

FYI, Lenovo Vantage update takes away the button for turbo fan (or hides it in a place no sane person would look). To do this manually, PRESS FN+Q! I learned this here:
Another note: BIOS UPDATE 2/14/19:

Summary of Changes
Latest Version BIOS fixed all merged issues from previous.

BIOS Notification:
- Update DPTF setting to 012519a.
- [Fix]Fan was incorrect when disabled fan full on(Fn+Q).
edit: holy snikes Anton. That is the worst light bleed I've ever seen on a display. Return that shiz. Mine is bad, but that is catastrophic. TOTALLY unacceptable. -

I spoke to them on the phone and the rep told me the custom would take even longer - though at the time it was 12-14 days. Now I do see it as 5-7 days for custom and all others as SOLD OUT as you said.
I don't trust it anymore though - that page has been wrong all month - it showed the 2070s as shipping in 5+ weeks - but I've heard of people getting 2070s - but there is not a single Y740 RTX2060 owner yet that I know of.
I knew that the custom was more expensive (even with base config, because it has an extra Wifi module - you can see it if you hit "Compare Models" - it shows 2 instead of 1 which is why there is a ~$60 CAD difference). But doing custom with same specs comes out as $2,250 vs $2,128.12 - so $120 CAD premium with only the hope of getting it sooner. And the only actual customization I'd want is Win 10 Pro for $39 - anything else I can do myself for cheaper later (and I didn't even include that in the compare).
So not worth it unfortunately.
If there actually is anyone with a Y740 2060 now, please do correct me.
Thanks,

Looking forward to seeing more reviews. Everything on the US site is sold out now except the "custom" variants. I have an older Sager I want to replace, the 670mx is not aging gracefully at this point...
-
Ok this is weird...
From yesterday morning is no longer possible to check the prices in Lenovo Spain, Germany or UK..it directly doesnt show the different models (or with sold out like in the US)...its like it has not been released yet. But on thursday there was 5 different models for the Legion Y740 17" and 3 for the 15".
Could it be related with the screen light bleeding / motherboard problems?

Yea the laptops have been taken down. The light bleed was really bad. I would be upset cos this looks like the perfect laptop to me right now.
I’m going to buy this laptop at some point likely with 9th gen. but for now I’ll prob just buy another aw15 with 8th gen and 1070 for half the cost of £900 for a few months till I do

I recently bought 15 inch model with 2070 max q. Great laptop other than the screen bleed with annoys me a bit.
I'm thinking to return it, but it seems that all laptops with thin bezels have some sort of screen bleed. What do you guys think; should I return this?
https://ibb.co/2Pzdydy
https://ibb.co/D7ptrDK
I tried to make camera settings so the bleed looks realistic. The worse bleed in corner looks actually bit more "glowy", meaning when its dark it extends further into screen just a bit.
What are these motherboard problems people have? Coil whine? My model has that quite a bit from gpu
Edit: pictures were taken in daylight. Shutter speed just makes ambient light look dark -
In Canada can still see the models, but only custom is not shown as sold out.
I saw the random post on reddit about it being recalled but nothing else from anyone except mentioning him. Definitely looking forward to more details either way, confirming or not.
The reddit posts for reference:

Weird in any case...maybe its just something temporary and because of another reason, who knows!
I've contacted Lenovo's customer support on facebook and twitter, and they both know nothing..even don't know anything about the problems with backlight bleeding. -
https://www.lenovo.com/gb/en/laptop...series/c/legion-laptops-series#compareSection
We'll see. I contacted them multiple times about the delays by phone and email - they stopped emailing me back part week.
The last thing they told me was that Lenovo didn't anticipate the high demand and can't keep up with it, hence the delays - but you couldn't preorder before Jan 31 and certain models never were shipped from day 1.
I still think no one has received an RTX2060 Y740 - but now maybe no one is getting any more of the other models anytime soon either.
Peter -
So I made one more photo and tryed not to overexpose the light bleeding. What do you guys think, should I return it? I don’t have any other issues with the laptop.

My unit is certainly going to be RMA'd at some point. I have warranty and such, but I'll do it in the first 30 days. I'm almost for sure going to fully return the unit though since the AW A51m seems to be benching and running well.
My findings with this unit after about 10 hours of Anthem and multiple benchmarks are interesting. As with many other units with i7-8750h, the thing basically cooks if turbos aren't turned down and undervolting is done. So it benches really high when fresh and cold, giving these illusory fire strike numbers that don't actually mean anything. To get a sustained bench in uni, aida64, etc. it will inevitably power throttle unless the turbos are turned down. Turning it down just a tiny bit keeps everything in the 60C range or low 70s, which is very nice and stable. Yet during games, like Anthem, I'm able to keep the turbos at max without hitting power or thermal throttling. During gameplay with max turbo, I hit 80C, but the fans were ready to keep things in check.
So in real world gameplay, it seems you can leave the turbos as is and just undervolt. You get a few more FPS, but nothing drastic. I sit between 80-100 FPS in Anthem on Ultra at all times. Large actions scenes have a dip, but nothing under 60 that I observed. That said, a little to be desired, when the game doesn't look dramatically different between Medium to Ultra and my old system with a 1050ti and 7700 can run 40-60FPS stable. It just doesn't feel like a $1500-$2000 upgrade that you would think going from a budget card to the next generations enthusiast card would. I think this is revealing about the nature of RTX laptops.
I'll reserve my judgement though for the AW Area-51m and see if that has a special feel to it and huge performance boost. I don't necessarily need a high fire strike score, but I would like to at least max out my display more often than not.
I'll do a full review and gameplay video soonish. -
Thanks for your advice guys. I pulled the trigger and ordered custom build system, it says it is going to ship in 5-7 business days, so I hope it will come before my 30 day return window ends on the system I have now. I will compare both and just return the one with the worst screen.
In a mean time I played Metro Exodus for a few hours, all settings set to "Extreme", Ray tracing set to High, DLSS on. FPS was hovering between 57-80. Temperatures Maxed at 75c for CPU and 67c for GPU, average 70 for CPU and 65 for GPU. No throttling at all (turbo mode for the fans was off). So I am very happy with the thermals on this laptop. -
Alright, I found a fellow Canadian who ordered more than a week after me but already received his RTX2060 Y740 (probably a custom build).

I also ordered an Y 740 with the i 5 8300h and the RTX 2060 (81HE003YGE). I plan to swap the 128GB SSD for a 970 Evo Plus, but I have to wait until it arrives, because I need to check if a m 2 2280 will fit (built in ssd is a 2242).
I choose the i5 because I'm hoping that it wont't get that hot as the i7 and that I get a little bit more battery runtime.
According to DHL it will arrive on Thursday, 02/21. I will do some benchmarks and check the screen for BLB, which worries me a bit... -

How is the performance VS other laptops with the same specs? Is it actually thermally stable?
-
With a bit of undervolting I was able to get consistent scores of 1250 in Cinebench R15 from the CPU (sometimes even 1264). That's the most I saw so far from a laptop of this size.
Under FinalFantasty R15 the GPU was POWER throttled, not thermal throttled. -
I finished my video review. I'm sorry if it is bad, I learned how to do all this as I went. For a first review I think it is okay!
Overall, the laptop does great with thermals after a tiny bit of tweaking and has sound build quality. The 2080 Max-Q is overall a bit disappointing. I give a high recommendation to the 2060 version of the 15" variant as it is very cheap for its performance and build quality, but can't speak directly to its quality.
I will -probably- be returning the model I have and picking up the 15" 2060 model, or going all out on an Area-51m. This laptop exists in a very strange middle ground between the 2060 mobile and full 2080. When I have an Alienware Area-51m, I'll post my thoughts and see if my opinion changes.Kalen, dodgehemi0 and Arondel like this. -

Update status Germany/Spain/UK (probably applicable to US/CA market) : i´ve talked three times with the customer service, and the last one (the first two just said that the demand was higher as expected) confirmed me that the Y740 has been temporarily removed due to backlight bleeding problems on the screen, and they are working on a solution, including those who already have it, they will offer an "update". They should be available again in 3-5 weeks = end of March - beginning of April (coinciding with the delivery dates of those who bought it during the last weeks)
ps: when should be the new i7-9xxx released? for example the successor of the i7-8750h, probably the i7-9750h? is it expected to be a huge upgrade, or just a refresh?PJPeter likes this. -
Guessing they had a certain of each stock and now the custom (slightly more expensive so less demanded) has finally run out then.
Next gen H Procs are due mid year apparently ( https://www.techspot.com/news/78801-intel-leaks-specs-9th-gen-h-series-laptop.html - I had read Q2 2019 previously, but maybe that was a different type of 9th gen?). See the article for the spec bump info.
I've been considering waiting for that, but if I do receive a unit before April I'll wait to get it and run it through testing and make sure it does what I need (long enough battery runtime with good enough performance and without making too much noise) and possibly look to another laptop with a larger battery (maybe GS65) if it does not.
Update: My order from yesterday of a custom build 15" Y740 2060 with 256GB SSD and 16GB RAM and Win 10 Pro is showing as estimated ship date of Feb 27 - any time in the past 4 orders it would show blank right after it was placed and then it would update to a delivery date in March/April. So this is a good sign to me. Will see.

Hey all,
I'm in Canada and went with the one from RFD as well. Went with the 15" Y740 with i7-8750H, 16GB, 256GB SSD, 2060 (and got such a good deal with the military discount; I'm so appreciative of Lenovo for offering such a generous discount!). My shipping date shows as February 26 and arriving February 27 so I'm looking forward to that!
Coming from years of Alienware (current one til I sell it is an Alienware 15 R3 with GTX 1070), this is a big change for me. I'm used to repadding and repasting mine so I hope it's just as simple to do with this one. I've gone through the repair manual in advance and it doesn't seem to onerous.
This laptop had all the things I was looking for and unfortunately the Alienware M15 was just not doing it for me; I personally think it looks gaudy and terrible and also is way overpriced compared to the competition.
I'm looking forward to this laptop for sure. I like it's subdued style yet customization and with the SSD option I have a full 2.5" SSD option for the alternate drive (though I do hope it comes with the heatshield over the empty spot).
Thanks for all the work on this thread guys! I'm definitely worried a bit about light bleed but given it is IPS I'll accept a little bit.

It doesn't give full details, but you can do a compare of these and then cross reference with benchmarks between the previous gens, take the % difference and get an approx # for those interested in the approx performance jump between this and next gen based on what info we have right now. Did a quick demo of the back light bleed and HDR:
The HDR looks so good. The back light bleed is super painful even in the few seconds of Punisher I show, and my unit seems to be on the better side.
I think that about concludes my Y740 17" videos. I concluded that this seems to be the best value in its class and highly recommend the unit overall, though the 15" seems to be much more aesthetically pleasing. The 2080MaxQ is a bit disappointing regardless of what machine it is in, but the 2060 exceed expectations. I will no doubt be returning my 17" due to back light bleed and consider going to the 15".Arondel likes this. -
Received a 15” with a 2060 about two weeks ago. Surprised no one else seems to have gotten a 2060 version before they ran out. I also have light bleed except it’s in the bottom two corners and a little along the bottom and left edge. I’ve only played some apex and forza 6 demo as I am debating sending it back for the light bleed issue. Handled both games well. Fire strike graphics is ~14500-15000 so in line with the other 2060s out there. Temps and noise were also comparatively low at idle and gaming. Battery seems to only last 2-3 hrs with battery saver on, haven’t played with undervolting yet so that may help some.
Gthirst do you have problems with the killer WiFi module? Somehow I was only downloading from Microsoft store at 20 mbps but went up to 80 when I plugged in Ethernet cord. Fast.com shows ~80mbps on the same WiFi connection.
I will be in contact with Lenovo about the screen, not sure about returning or just letting them fix the screen.Kalen likes this.
