Someone suggested to me to have a tech come out and fix the screen, I'll pursue that before my return period is up.
I'll do some bandwidth tests and such this weekend, super busy these next couple days!

The bleed issues are a real shame for an otherwise brilliant machine
-
Hey guys, my notebook arrived earlier then expected. I want to give you my opinion about the device and some benchmark scores.
My specs
- Lenovo Y740-15ICHg (81HE003YGE)
- Intel Core i5 8300H
- Nvidia RTX 2060
- 16GB RAM
- 128GB M2 NVMe SSD
- 1TB 7200rpm HDD
Build
The laptop feels really well built, compared to my old Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga. The display cover, keyboard and 2/3 of the bottom are made from metal. Overall it feels really solid.
Maintenance
I openend the device by removing 11 screws and loosening the plastic clips with an old credit card. Everything seems to be easily accessible.
The built in SSD has a M2 2242 form factor. I will replace the M2 SSD with a larger M2 2280 and remove the HDD.
Keyboard & Trackpad
The keyboard feels nice, but I have to get used to the left set of macro keys, which bother me a bit. The RGB lightning of the keyboard is fun to look at, you can setup almost anything you want with the iCue software.
Display
The display looks really good in my opinion, but it could be a little brighter. Colors are nice and saturated. The panel in my laptop is a LG LP156WFG-SPB2, which was also used in the Y530, see review here: https://www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-Legion-Y530-i7-8750H-GTX1060-Laptop-Review.379946.0.html
I still have to check for back light bleeding.
Speakers
The speakers are ok, they sound good and get loud. For a laptop, the stereo effect is very good because the speakers are installed at the sides on the left and the right of the keyboard.
Benchmarks
All benchmarks were run after about one hour doing various stuff, so not directly after boot with all components being cold.

Cooling
I think that the cooling is good. Of course it gets louder than my Thinkpad Yoga under load, but it's not annoying.
Software
I didn't find a lot of crapware on this device. I immediately uninstalled McAffee along with the other Windows crap (Candy Crush, etc.). Lenovo Vantage is a nice program that shows an overview of your system, which I quite like. -

Anyone with the 2070MQ can run FF 15 benchmark?
1920x1080 normal preset in fullscreen mode (with discrete graphics selected in the BIOS).
http://benchmark.finalfantasyxv.com/na/ -
So is the 2080MQ model a 80W or 90W variant?
-
Richard Zheng Notebook Evangelist
It shouldn't matter, you can flash an 80W chip with a 90W vBIOS IIRC -
Help me understand why it shouldn’t matter? Using a 90w bios on a 80w gpu. Wouldn’t that change only the stock clocks. It’s still only gonna be 80w or is it just locked to 80w and a bios flash can alter depending on which bios is flashed over it? So you could have an 80w 1080. But flash it and now it’s 90w 1080?

Personally I hope it comes with a 90W vBIOS as flashing one that isn't compatible can brick your system... I would rather it be stock.

In theory, the only difference between an 80W and 90W chip is a software limitation. If you had the bios of a 90W chip, you could turn an 80W chip into a 90W chip IIRC. This is especially huge on chips like the 2080 where they can be 80-150W and where pushing a few watts more can really change the experience if you are willing to crank those fans -
Richard Zheng Notebook Evangelist
I agree, but getting an 80W chip is far from a dealbreaker thanks to flashing. -
No one said it’s a deal breaker but it is something to consider.
I’ve never flashed a GPU and have no clue where to start and if you screw up a step can brick a system.
It could easily handle a 90W GPU from the temps I’ve been seeing with the RTX 2080MQ.
Is flashing a GPU easy? and where would you get a 90W BIOS for the GPU?
Did I read correctly in one of the posts that the HDR does not work with games? Hope I’m wrong because that was one feature that was a pretty big factor in looking into this laptop to begin with. -
That is correct. The screen does HDR STREAMING, not gaming. The option is still greyed out while gaming. Netflix and YouTube apparently work with HDR streaming though.

The GPU is 80W. There is not much of a difference in performance between 80W and 90W as you can read in this post: https://www.theeverydayenthusiast.com/home/comparison-80w-vs-90w-2080-max-q
You can easily achieve that performance gain by slightly overclocking your 80W chip without flashing Vbios.Kalen likes this. -
Thanks for that. But moving on to this reply I think it would be a deal breaker. Because if you don’t wanna flash it. Your sitting on a gimped gpu then.
If I compare the results on the aero x5 and Razer Blade 15/y740 15. Synthetically that difference is significant on notebook check on the 2070 max q.
If I just bought the aero x5. I’d be happy with it. But if I learnt that that other 2070 max q was performing above mine I wouldn’t want a lower powered one.
For eg Witcher 3 on the aero x5 was getting 59fps on ultra. But the blade 15 was getting 69fps same settings. And again on time spy about 6000 vs 6700. That score reflects the difference in game.
Sometimes that few FPS can make a difference on playable or not in some settings. You could say turn it down. But I wouldn’t want to if the other laptop could do it. Over clocking is not for everyone tho.
Not bashing your post cos for us that know, that is a way around things if your confident of risk

I agree that it does indeed suck, but sadly there isn't much you can do once nVidia and manufacturers realize this is a good way to get HUGE marketing hype without having to actually have to cool the damn things. Like that whole "THIN AND LIGHT CORE I9 FASTER THAN YOUR DESKTOP" thing, but even harder for most folks to find out about. You can deduce "thin and light i9 is bad", but knowing a TDP difference is hard to find. Even MX 150 MQ and non MQ took a while to discover despite HUGE performance differencesPJPeter likes this. -
That is pretty stupid.
Is if a Lenovo thing or just waiting for a update to include gaming?
That’s a head scratcher to not have it enabled for gaming. -
Richard Zheng Notebook Evangelist
Probably some software/licensing has to be finalized before they enable it? -
This is how the Alienware 13 R3 with i7-7700 and OLED was as well. Supported HDR, but not fully.
Shows the back light bleed and a short HDR demo.Kalen likes this. -
Ya that was definitely unfortunate... I'm hoping that mine doesn't show up like that. However I made another order with the 2070 Max-Q as ebates had gone up to 9% so the upgrade only costs $149 more. I feel like that might be worth it as drivers become more optimized.Last edited: Feb 22, 2019

Where do you find this in ebates? I’ve looked and can’t find it.

I have an Alienware Area-51m arriving on Monday. Going to compare the two. If I'm not totally happy with it, I'll surely return it and go to the 15" Y740 with 2060. RTX is certainly not the jump we were hoping for, but for the price bracket the 2060 is a substantial upgrade from the 1060. I think I could easily make it by with a 2060 until something more evocative comes around.
edit: the 15" with 2060 is back in stock and shipping same day from the US site... tempting.Last edited: Feb 23, 2019 -
It would be a interesting comparison for sure , can’t wait to hear what you think about both.
-
Last Wednesday I decided to cancel my order on a Dell G5 and go for the Y740 instead. I had it in my basket and when I went to checkout the laptop disappeared from the site and couldn't finish my order.
I called Lenovo immediately and the said it will come back on site soon, without specifying what soon means. Now I see that it is not available in any European country. I guess it's because of the lighbleeding that they are trying to solve. Has anybody in here ordered it last week and what is the estimated shipping date you have? Did you get any update about delayed shipping? -
Shipping delays are caused by lack of parts and stock. At least that is what they want us to think. Mine ships today, and it is the 15 inch 2070 variant. If light bleeding is an issue, you can always call up a technician to have it fixed, at least if you have warranty plans, because that is what support says.
-
At the moment, custom built models where you can modify your ram and storage etc, are taking 3 weeks to ship in Canada. Preconfigs that are in stock ship in 3 days, and the 2070 max q preconfig for the 15 inch models are out of stock already, despite having been restocked just 5 days ago. Stock levels are very volatile, and I do not know about the preconfigs, but custom configs might get delays even all the way up to April depending on parts availability, this has been an issue for some people on reddit.

Ordered my 740 15” 2060 on Saturday with the student discount for $1400+tax. Excited to test this one out.
-
I’m on the hunt for a new daily driver. One of these with the 2060 might just fit the bill seems to have all the things I would need and a few other extras. Because I’m a cheapskate and make nothing off of YouTube videos what’s the best way to get one of these as cheap as possible?

You could try Lenovo or IBM's EPP plus additional sales. You could easily get 30%+ off if you wait for a promotion (which happen often). Also, don't you run ads on YT? -
Are you the same Bob from Bob of all trades YouTube? Will you be doing a review of the y740 if you get 1? If you are, PM me and I will share my discount code to you.
I'm just waiting on an extensive review of this laptop before I pull the trigger.Vasudev likes this. -

No it isn't Bob of all trades, just somebody with the same name, same pictures, same posts and same youtube channel
Also if he gets one, I think we can safely say a review is on the way! -
13k subs makes about $200 per month on my channel. It’s insulting lolVasudev likes this.

Well, I added your channel to my adblock whitelist, so I hope that helps (every little counts I guess?). Do you have a patreon account? -
I do per the request of many but I feel scummy talking about it so I never bring it up and rarely place it in the description.Vasudev likes this.

Fair enough! But you should look at https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/wiki/index and check out their links to discounts at Lenovo's website -
Military gets 25% off with a coupon code, students/teachers give 20% off. Pretty easy to find someone who can help you out! EPP may be a bit tougher to rangle, but I believe they get 30% off.Vasudev likes this.

Looking forward to your thoughts, thinking about returning the 17" with 2080MaxQ and Alienware Area-51m depending on their real world performance vs cost. Seems like the 15" with 2060 is a great buy.
In my review of the 17", I linked to your i7-8750h thermal tutorial and mentioned you! -
Richard Zheng Notebook Evangelist
If I recall correctly, you can do a hybrid option or optimus via software or BIOS, but I can't confirm. That CPU and GPU, with enough cooling, should be great for video editing. I was wondering what speeds it would run at after a full hour of Aida64 and Furmark...
Any plans to ditch killer for intel wireless? -
I will always ditch Killer for intel. Is it officially using a killer solution or is it a killer suite on top of an Intel 9560?
-
If you got a review I’d love to check it out
-
Richard Zheng Notebook Evangelist
I think it is rebranded intel with killer crapware, but I am not sure -
What keeps me from thinking otherwise is that it’s using Bluetooth 4.1. All the new Intel NICs use Bluetooth 5.0
-
Richard Zheng Notebook Evangelist
According to the Y740's PSREF, it is running a killer 1550 which is a rebranded intel 9260.
https://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=0XM-00HX-00012
Which is a Bluetooth 5.0 card... Which is indeed confusing as even in Killer's naming scheme, it mentions that it is a 9260. So they downgraded the bluetooth version? -
No they must have just mistyped then! It’s probably the newer NIC now that you pointed this out.
-
Richard Zheng Notebook Evangelist
Probably a typo then... But a typo on a PSREF is a sin... Somebody at Lenovo is gonna get fired -

Then again, lenovo were the ones who did THIS MONSTROSITY on their product page https://imgur.com/bTL5KrE
This was on the official product page of the X390 Yoga, this wasn't just a leaked render or something -
