You don't really need a tutorial. Just get either XTU or Throttlestop, and set the core voltage and cache voltage to about -100. Run some games or benchmarks or something for a while. If it doesn't crash, lower them to -110. Rinse and repeat. If you crash, you've gone too low, so try a slightly higher number (crash at -120, try -115).

There's no risk, aside from crashing and losing any unsaved work.

    Here's a guide on Throttlestop;
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/the-throttlestop-guide.531329/

If you want to keep it simple you just click the FIVR button, enable the "adjustable voltage" checkbox and change the voltage offset, in both the core and cache (radio buttons at the top) menus. In Intel XTU you just adjust the Core voltage offset and it automatically changes the cache to match. XTU has been buggy though, so I'd suggest TS.

Having had returned my 2060 nearly a month ago, I dabbled back in and got the 2070 versions at a great price. The small changes I'm noticing is backlight bleed seems to be a bit better and IDLE fan noise. I actually hear the fans humming at idle rather than not hearing anything at all with the 2060.

What do you consider a good price? I’ve got a lead on a 2070MQ version with 256GB for $1650. Or for another $150, I can jump up to the 500GB drive and Win 10.

I’m torn if I should pull the trigger now, or wait for 9750s to come out...

Any idea when the 9750 will be available for The Y740?

I was researching it yesterday. I wasn't able to find anything concrete.

I messaged B&H (they have preorders up right now), and they said they didn't know any dates.
I messaged Lenovo, they said they know they're coming, just not when.
The best info I could get was from this page at CDW
    https://www.cdw.com/product/lenovo-...-16gb-ram-1tb-windows-10-home/5516317?pfm=srh
They're listing it as being available in 9-11days, with an estimated arrival of 5/29.

    SWIM got the Y740 2070MQ 256GB NVMe version + 3yr deport warranty for $1355 (incl. 6% tax). Now that's a steal deal.

Oh yeah!! I forgot to add that my prices include the 3yr onsite AND accident protection warranties.

I know it’s not as cheap as some (like that one you mentioned!! Wow!), but if the refreshes come out with new processors, it’ll be a while before there’s ANY discount... right?

Does it really matter? it's 14nm process. At best your getting a slightly faster CPU and a bunch of secondary improvements such as:

    keyboard
    Thermals
    webcam placement
    500Nit dolby hdr panel

overall it is pretty much the same. You make it seem like your going from a Honda Civic to a Ferrari and that's just not the case...

Furthermore MSI released their pseries machines which would be on par with the y740

Doubt it manufacturers discount based on market demand, and knowing lenovo they tend to discount things a lot.

Excellent points! Thanks for slapping me back to reality. I keep getting caught chasing numbers. I'm just trying to make sure I get the most bang for the buck I'm spending, but in reality, it won't really mean much. It seems like 8750 vs 9750 differences really boil down to a teeny percentage increase in multi-core boost clock, and slightly larger, but still small boost in single core clock. Is that about it? Just making sure I'm not missing anything.

And honestly, the new Y740s are JUST the CPU bump. None of that other stuff (nor battery) are being changed... so its really small potatoes I guess.

Definitely small potatoes. I was doing the same thing. Waited for RTX cards, then waited for 9th gen intel.... finally decided I couldn't find similarly equipped laptop for the price and ordered with the 8th gen.

Though it seems Lenovo cant figure out when they'll actually ship my laptop so I may end up without one.

And the 500 nits screen should hopefully make it. And you never know. The 2080 may make it but that’s unlikely but other country have it in the 15”
I having the 8750h. There’s no point chasing the 9750h unless I could upgrade to those things from the 2070 mq.

    Yeah...
B&H still list it as the 300nit screen, but CDW lists it at the 500. Of course, CDW also says the camera has a privacy shutter like other lenovos... so grain of salt?

No way this screen is 500 nits. Not bright enough in the slightest. And if they say 300 and 500 optional their should be a choice to select either in the customise or available in the highest modelled preconfigured ones.

Looks like that 500 nits screen is also showing up in the Lenovo X1E gen 2, slated to launch in July. No clue if it will be part of the launch options, but it appears to be.

Gonna have to do some work in Throttlestop, what are good temps I should be aiming for?

Thought about killing turbo boost but that would probably be a mistake.

Go with Bob of all trades guide and just fiddle with the voltages from there.

I've goten about -170 core offset with -150 cache offset stable sofar while it still clocks 3.9 no problem.

Runs in the 70c range with mild spikes into the 80s with one spot in game hitting 90 briefly.

It's not needed and I would recommend not using it because it can limit your download speeds. If you want to reinstall it, you can download it directly from killer.

Just an update for the others waiting...

Ordered May 2nd, was supposed to ship May 11th, but the shipping date was pushed back to June 30th. I called Lenovo and was told I'd get an e-mail within 48 hours with an updated shipping date. Nobody e-mailed. I called again 3 days later, and was told the distribution center is saying the laptop will ship May 31st.

Lenovo's website currently shows the exact laptop I ordered will ship in 2-3 business days. I e-mailed the customer service rep who was helping me to find out what they can do to explain this and keep me as a customer. Ordering from Lenovo has been a complete s*** show. Never had this much trouble with all my previous MSI laptops.

MSI's warranties ain't nuthin to write home about, or just get the p creators series from MSI and be done with it As far as an explanation you won't get one, most likely they don't have the part at the factory and you have to wait it out.

I've never had a bad experience with MSI warranties. I've had two laptops (same model laptop, got blue screens so they gave me a brand new one) and a motherboard replaced with no problems.

I'm just growing tired of Lenovo's dishonest marketing.

Uh huh, nice story, don't believe it but hey nice story. Anyways,

As far as dishonest marketing, it's been known there has been delays on y740 for a while, and I imagine it's probably gonna be that way till they hit the refreshed version. Long and short I would set your expectations very very low when considering purchasing this thing. TBH, I had to wait 2 months, and came close to cancelling a few times like others. If the delay had been any longer I probably would have went for a workstation or looked at the p-creator's series from MSI despite my low opinion of their warranty.

Relax, not everybody on the internet is a liar. There are actually honest people in the world. Lenovo marketing is not among them, though.

Seriously though, what is so unbelievable about having to warranty a laptop? I didn't know that was some kind of magical feat few among us could manage. I bought a brand new laptop that would blue screen when installing games so they sent me a new one. It literally blue screened right out of the box installing World of Warcraft. This was 8 years ago, maybe it has changed since then. You might have a low opinion of their warranty process, but not everybody has bad experiences and you don't have to be insulting about it.

As far as setting my expectations very very low... I think I'll pass. It is not too much to expect a laptop is shipped in a reasonable amount of time when it is shown in stock. If they can't get their stuff together I'll give somebody else my money since that's the only power I have over this process as a consumer.

I just said I didn't believe you, if you want to take that as an insult you may do as you please. Making base assumptions isn't helping your case either.

Good, you should go elsewhere. Now that you know that there is delays in getting it from the factory. You could order it through a 3rd party such as CDW/office depot but you are better off with another manufacturer.

Got my 15" Y740 2070 mq a couple days ago. Its pretty good compared to my GS65 2060. I like the smaller keys a lot. So far, I found hwinfo says the GPU runs at 80W normally and switches to 90W when the fans are set to max. Using Afterburner to oc, I got firestrike/timespy scores of 16,317/7508, with +150 core/500 memory ( in other words, not trying very hard).

While flashing the vbios on my MSI and Y740 were both easy and straightforward, the Y740 refused to boot with Razer's 90W vbios and I was forced to flash it back via safe mode with command prompt. I can't be sure why it didn't take, considering plenty of other 2070mq laptops flash just fine. My guess is it's because of the funky, power limit switching vbios or possibly gsync. I might try again if I find more vbios files. Neither benchmark posted to the rankings due to the invalidated firmware/drivers.

Throttlestop undervolting seems to have very little effect on temps in my living room at 70F ambient. Cinebench R15 never fell below 3.8GHz during multiple runs.

I was disappointed Lenovo decided to set this laptop up with RST for optane while shipping with an nvme drive instead of an optane drive considering the inclusion of a 7200 rpm HDD and how inexpensive a 660p is compared to nvme.

I had a similar issue going on with my 4-May order. Was original to ship in 3 weeks, now showing 2 months. So seeing it on the site the following week with "ships same day if ordered before 2pm" on product page. After calls to sales and after order support both said nothing can be done but buy and cancel I did, or I tried.

Ordered 2nd one on 14th, delivered on 15th. Canceled original order on 15th, 9am. @ 5pm on 16th received ship notification of cancelled order. Received cancelled order on 18th. RMA'd today.

TLDR: So your 2-May-19 order may be arriving soon.

That is good news that yours showed up, even if your 2nd order arrived before the first.

My order summary is showing a $0 total for my order right now and there is a pending charge on my credit card as of yesterday so you may be right, could be on the way soon.

Yes, your description sounds like several folks on reddit who were commiserating about the same wait when orders started showing up. If I had noticed that first, I might have waited another couple of days. but I"m happy, the one I received first is awesome, screen is great, loving it!! Here's hoping you receive the same notice soon.

Tried the 115W vbios from the Area 51M last night. Same device I'd, boots with no issues but results were disappointing. Firestrike scores in the high 14,000s. No amount of tweaking in Afterburner makes it run better.

I have the 2070MQ. The 115W vbios is from the Alienware Area51M with 2070 non maxQ. It pulled the full 115W on my Y740 but only boosted to 1,400-1,550 MHz in Firestrike, resulting in scores equivalent to a 2060 mobile. The original vbios with max fan/90W setting and +195/1,000 in AB scores in the 16,4xx range in Firestrike and a little under 8,000 in Timespy.

Oh, did you see any throttling with the GPU and its reason: Power limit or Temp?
    What were the temps like?

First, a correction: I meant 7K in timespy. My current record, which I just ran again to be sure is 7,2xx.

As for your question, HWInfo64 said it was not hitting anything but the 115W power limit with that vbios. As to why it wouldn't boost higher, I can't provide reasoning other than the Y740 hardware doesn't like it. Temps were in the high 50's since the boost clock was so low.

Lenovo stated that they would give the Y740 a 500 nit display and 9th gen CPUs. I spoke with someone over chat about it being the end of May, and this is what they said.
Also, student discounts have been neutered.

    Mariela V.:
Hello, thanks for contacting Lenovo Sales. My name is Mariela V. (Rep ID: 2900720471). At the conclusion of this chat, there will be a brief, two-question survey, scoring from 1-10 where 10 is the best. Please be sure to ask about our flexible payment options!

    Me:
Hi there! I'm just wondering if the student discount has been lowered

    Mariela V.:
Welcome to Lenovo SALES Chat Dept!
How can I help you with your new purchase today?

    Mariela V.:
yes, student discount is 5% off now

    Me:
Gotcha. Do you know if there are plans for it to go back up?

    Mariela V.:
Unfortunately we don't have that information Mark

    Mariela V.:
discount is apply on top of the discount price, which item are you trying to purchase?

    Me:
Sounds good. One more question, lenovo put out a press release saying that the y740 will get upgrades - namely the 500 nit screen and 9th gen intel CPUs - they said that the upgrades would come this month. Is that still expected?

    Me:
    I'm looking at the 17" y740

    Mariela V.:
I was checking and there is a delay on it, we expect to have this option next month approx

    Mariela V.:
    on June 25th approx

    Me:
Awesome! Thank you for your help.

(This was a rep for the Canadian site. If you're in the U.S you might be seeing it sooner)

I have had my y740 for just over a month now (since 4/22) and love it, was worth the 10 week wait. I got the 2070 with 512 GB SSD, 16 gb ram and 1tb HDD (I did replace the HDD with a 1tb 860 EVO) I mainly play Skyrim and Ark but everything runs at max settings without a problem. At home it normally sits on a Thermaltake Massive 14 dual pad that I put on my lap desk while I game on the couch, after some of my longer Ark sessions the keys are a bit hot but not too bad.
I just got my Rift S this past weekend which is the main reason I got the y740. I had not seen anyone talking about VR on the y740 so thought Id share my experience with it so far. The Rift S works great with it, it runs all the games I have tried with no issues. I plug in using the DP to MiniDP and USB 3.0 ports on the back. I have had a couple choppy moments but think it was because I had some other things running in the background while I was in VR. If anyone has any VR y740 questions let me know and Ill do my best to answer.
I have also been using the laptop at work for meetings and running testing with alternate accounts alongside my work desktop, set to power save in battery settings I have made it through 2 hour long meetings with no worries, at first I was taking the power brick into meetings with me but I now leave it at my desk.

I wonder if the teacher and military discounts were similarly slashed. Kinda torn on returning my current one(has some screenbleed issues) and getting the refresh with better specs. Of course there is no garuntee that that version will have decent sales like the current Y740 has. Only have acouple days left to make a call.

On another note the Australian Lenovo website has the I9 Y740s already listed for sale right now:
    https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/laptop...-y-series/Lenovo-Legion-Y740-17/p/88GMY701062

Though the prices are horrid and there is no mention of a 500nit screen.

If anyone is interested there may be a price error on the Lenovo Y540 17" in Canada. The top of the line with i7-9750H, 2060, 144 Hz, 16 GB, is only $1267.87+tax after military discount. Also ebates is 9%. I have the Y740 already but this was too good a deal to pass up.

Looks like Lenovo (US) has the 9th Gen. i7-9750 chip as an option now available for Y740s.
