Isn’t that review 2 years old tho? On a positive note things could of improved since. People only tend to put reviews that left them completely bitter, or when they are overwhelmingly happy with their purchase. But generally people don’t leave reviews as long as they get what they paid for right?

    Whoops! I wasn’t clear sorry.

I ordered it with the minimum everything, but I did pay extra for the 2070. I just got my 32GB set of RAM to put in it today.

I ordered a couple weeks into June, and they’re saying it should ship July 12th. We’ll see. They also said they’d knock an extra $100 off the price, but they said they could only do that after it shipped. It sketched me out a little, but we’ll see!

I have been playing around with my y740(15" 8750H GTX 2070MQ), trying to install linux, I installed pop os and everything seem to work out of the box. However, I can't seem to find anyway to control the keyboard backlight, it seems that it will forever stuck in that spiral rainbow mode. I wonder if anybody knows a workaround.

You will have to use software capable of controlling the keyboard, such as Linux versions of Corsair iCue

Hmmm, there doesnt seem to be anything like icue linux around. There is a ckb app, but after installation it doesn't actually list lenovo y740 like icue app does, so i guess it is not supported unfortunately.

Also when I pick switchable graphics instead of discrete graphics on BIOS, I can't seem to pick the option whether to enable or disable gsync or most of the options pertaining for having NVIDIA card (drom NVIDIA desktop context menu), is that normal? I suppose that switchable graphics means that everything supposed to switch automatically

So I ordered the new Y740 15" with i7-9750H, 1660ti, and new 500 nit display. Got a wicked deal on it so I will compare it against my current Y740 (i7-8750H, 2060) and see how it is! I tend to play more CPU intensive games like Division 2, Anthem, Wildlands, etc so the 5% decrease from the 2060 to the 1660ti may be offset by the 10% increase of the i7-9750H over the i7-8750H. We shall see!

Just do me a favour. Run both in ultra preset in dx12 and let me know the FPS difference both on maximum fan mode. That’s a MUST. Want to gauge how much of an increase the the 9750h can give (somewhat) conclusively.
Edit: also do a screen side by side comparison of the brightness. Need to see what this 500nits is about. I know the 300 isn’t that bright compared to what I’ve had but never had 400+

Does anyone have the issue with their Y740 (my model is the 8750h 2070mq) where the backlight brightness will dim to half or so when the computer boots up from cold on the lockscreen? Once you login if you tap brightness up the slider shows it's at max and you have to tap brightness down, then brightness up for it to raise back to normal levels. Its had the same backlight behavior in all the bios that they have released.

Hey all you 740ies. Need your expertise here once again. You've been life-savers thus far with all your great advice. My first stop for advice I'll confirm.

So I have a Samsung Odessey+ VR HMD which has shorter cords than I prefer. Need to extend them a little. So I've done some research and have found and an 8-foot Accell USB-C VR adapter which I will link below. But in order for this to work I need to confirm if the USB-C port on my y740 is connected directly to the rtx 2060 or is it connected directly to intel's integrated GPU. If it's connnected to the intel GPU this won't work for me.

I've taken this information below directly from Accell's website which mentions that the y520 and y530 are compatable but stops short of mentioning the y740.

    https://www.accellww.com/products/usb-c_vr_adapter

    NVIDIA GTX 980, 980 Ti, 1060, 1070, 1080, 1080 Ti, Titan, Titan X, Titan Z

I did this so to speak , is there any guide you can recommend to install Win 10 on a new NvME, I ordered mine with one HD the NVMe and I want to replace it with a samsung one.
The major questions I have is before I install the new NvME should I do something with the current win 10 OS ? Like deactivate it or something, make the bootable USB 10 installation stick , then install the new NVme drive and install win 10 using the USB I made ?

I found this guide but not sure if it's the right one I should be using : https://www.windowscentral.com/how-do-clean-installation-windows-10

NVM I figured out how to to it alls you have to do is go to Lenovo support site and enter your serial number and they let you download the recovery media and the win key is linked to your m$ account.

Not quite, the Win Key is embedded in your BIOS and tied to your motherboard.
My suggestion is to just clone the existing drive if you can, but if you don't have a way to plug the second nvme drive in, or have some sort of intermediate (you can clone to 2.5" then to M.2 nvme) then reinstalling windows is the way to go.

For everyone who's been bothered by the lack of fn+q to boost fan speed, I don't know when this happened but I now have a Thermal mode dropdown in Vantage.

So the y740 User Guide below doesn't specify whether the USB-C is connected to the intel integrated gpu or the 2060 dedicated gpu. Can anyone else confirm?

"3. Thunderbolt 3 connector (USB-C compatible) • Charges USB-C compatible devices with the output voltage and current of 5 V and 3 A. • Charges USB-compatible devices when your computer is off, in sleep mode, or in hibernation mode. To enable the Always On USB feature on your computer, see “Enable/Disable always-on” on page 24. • Transfers data at Thunderbolt 3 speed, up to 40 Gbps. • Connects to an external display. – USB-C to VGA: 1900 × 1200 pixels, 60 Hz – USB-C to DP: 3840 × 2160 pixels, 60 Hz • Connects to USB-C accessories to expand computer functionality."

I would say it's safe to assume that the TB3 connects to the Nvidia GPU since if you disable switchable graphics the intel GPU is disabled outright (it doesn't even show up in device manager)
Also when I look in the Nvidia Control Panel (I'm currently in Optimus mode) I see three displayports and an HDMI port under the 2060, considering this laptop only has one actual displayport I think it's pretty safe to assume at least one is the TB3 port.

The MUX switch quite literally switches everything over to the GPU. There's no way that it would be connected to the igpu in dedicated mode since it's disabled.

    Such a strange comment.
If I had room/space for a desktop, then I'd buy one. Moreso... why would anyone buy 17inch+ machines if they were just going to dock them when at home?

@B0B is one of the few people who've mentioned this in his videos. Once you hit a certain age and have kids / no study... being able to pull out a desktop replacement and game on it for a few hours before closing it up and tucking it all away is HUGE.

Correct. The i7-9750H also increased the capacity of dual channel support to 64 GB (2x32 GB sticks); up from 32 GB max in the previous generation. Unfortunately speed support was not increased so 2666 MHz is still the maximum (not that it matters since we don't have Intel XMP 2.0 access).

There are SODIMMS that are 2666 without XMP. IIRC Corsair makes some.

Most do (Crucial, Corsair, Kingston, all do) but ballistix requires XMP to unlock the full potential so that's one to avoid.

I've been under the impression that one of the Ballistix sets is dual rank, and as a result even though it's at 2400mhz, the actual performance you get beats the SR 2666mhz memory.

    Has anyone got a Y740-17ICH 9th gen?

I'm interested in whether they're still using the AUO329D, or whether they've updated it to the AUO409D.

You can tell by going to device manager, expanding 'monitors' then right clicking on 'Generic PnP Monitor' and selecting 'Properties'. Then select the 'Events' tab at the top. Under the information box you should see something like: "Device DISPLAY\AUOXXXD\"

Much appreciated if someone could pass this information on (I'd be interested in knowing the new 500 nit 15" panel too!)

I just replied to you on the Lenovo forums :)

I'll repost it here though. Seems it's the LP173WFG(SP)(D2) [LGD05E0]. Unfortunately there's bugger-all information available on it, besides panelook.
Trying to confirm now if it's the same as the one in the Area 51m.

    I'm 99% certain the 500 nit panel on the Y740 15" is: BOE NV156FHM-N4J

On the parts lookup, there are two sets of equivalent parts.

    Set A (all equivalent):
    LG LP156WFG SPB2
    BOE NV156FHM-N4G
BOE15.6FHDIPS2.6t300nit72%IPS(144Hz) (no idea what this one is)

    Set B:
    BOE NV156FHM-N4J

If all of the parts in Set A are equivalent, and one is 300 nits, they are probably all 300 nits. My guess is that the part in Set B is the 500 nit panel.

This would make sense, because I can't find any specs for the BOE NV156FHM-N4J. It seems to be a brand new part, and only available on the Y740.

Has anyone setup a headset with their y740 using their 3.5mm audio jack? My headset connects by 3.5mm only and not USB. But i'm not able to get the microphone working. Any help would be super appreciated as I spent nearly 2 hour last night trying all different audio sources with no luck.

The jack seems to be TRRS so you'll need either a matching headset (single plug with 3 black rings) or to get an adapter like this https://www.amazon.com/MillSO-Headset-Splitter-Headphone-Compatible/dp/B07C9D2WCK/

The 76Wh battery I ordered arrived today, swapped it in and here are some notes and pictures:

    https://imgur.com/gallery/YkL9Yv8

    And here's what Vantage reports.

    2019-07-20 13_23_07-Lenovo Vantage.png

Something interesting is after I put it in and booted the laptop, it turned on for 2 seconds, turned off, then turned back on, not sure if it was just re calibrating something.

Thank you so much for doing this. I'm sure everyone who's struggled with poor battery life thanks you as well.

Holy smokes so now we have a relatively cheap laptop with G-sync and all the gaming goodies but will also pack a respectable battery life? Wow that is nice.

Cause the biggest downside of the Y740 (that small battery) can now be worked around!
