Dont know where to see latest vBios, but i dont think you can even update it manually. You can try and update your whole Bios from the lenovo edge/vantage software thou if you think its something to do with your bios settings. Most of the time if your UV etc is wrong, games just freeze or you get a bluescreen. Your problem sounds more like game related issue...

I think there is also a preinstalled updating software, where you can update all your intel drivers etc also.

Anyone here knows what the difference between ICHg and IRHg?

To my understanding, ICHg using 8750H and IRHg using 9750H. Is that correct?

Is there any method to distinct between them? My mobo has been replaced in nov 2019, and now my system is totally unstable, i think its related to my BIOS, im afraid lenovo give me the wrong type of motherboard.

As i aware, ICHg bios and IRHg bios is different right? Right now i use IRHg BIOS, same like my SKU suppose to be. But I feel a little weird about my stability of my system right now.
It crashed a lot, BSOD everyday, and regularly recover my system about once a week which is very abnormal and stressful.

Tested my RAM and both are normal, no faulty.

    Please help. Thanks

Just bought this and am worried about the temps as the last laptop I bought burned out. Kinda need some guidance on a checklist:

    • Undervolt/Therottlestop
    • Cooling Pad
    • Need help with what type of stress tests to run before I decide my laptop is acceptable to keep.
These idle temps worry me a bit (with the back end raised to not block vents), is this ok?

    imgur.com/WCGdnW8

Doesn't look like I can attach imgur in here, but I can try to load it to my google photos if needed.

[e]Average is on the far right, max is the next column over (idle temps).

Throttlestop helped a great deal with the temps on my Y740.

Just to give you an idea for it's effectiveness, I'm currently sitting at a 140.6 mV undervolt on the CPU Core and the CPU Cache. At this point I am idling at 52-54 degrees across all six cores with the occasional jump into the upper 50s. This is while sitting flat on my kitchen table writing this.

With that same undervolt and overclocking the GPU (2060) the max temps for the CPU hit the mid 80s with the GPU barely breaking 70 during The Witcher 3 play sessions.

Edit: Those play sessions I do prop up the back end about an inch.

What are your thoughts on throttlestop vs XTU? I'm thinking to switch to throttlestop as XTU sometimes seems to not apply underclock on boot. I wish we could just do this in the BIOS...

From my limited use of XTU I always seemed to have issue with the changes sticking on my Surface Pro 4, sometimes it worked and other times it didn't. After setting it up to launch on startup for both the SP4 and now the Y740 Throttlestop has performed flawlessly in the background without any further fiddling. But I agree wholeheartedly, BIOS control would be so much more modification friendly :)

I've used both and like Throttlestop better but I do have to say, just like XTU, Throttlestop sometimes crashes when the laptop has a few sleep / wake cycles and requires a manual restart. Not a huge deal except: the throttlestop icon in the traybar remains there after it crashes so you don't know it isn't actually running until you happen to hover your mouse over it and it disappears at that point. Somewhat of a pain but still more stable than XTU overall in my experiences.

So Lenovo seems to consistently be wanting to push BIOS v10 since it pops up every couple of days. What are the benefits of it since it has never done this with previous BIOS updates?
I am liking v7 since it seemed to provide a decent graphical bump especially in benchmarking and was smoother in games like CoD Modern Warfare. Thanks!

Something seems to be seriously wrong with my battery. I went from almost 4 hours of light usage (Ie. Optimus, intel GPU set to max battery life, unnecessary apps closed, 40% brightness)
The exact same parameters now yield MAYBE 1.5 hours. What's going on here...
The Nvidia GPU seems to be sleeping (I have the icon enabled thats black and white when GPU is sleeping and colored when awake)
The CPU seems to sit between 2-5% with clock speed around 0.78GHz
Any ideas? This seems to have started after installing the throttlestop application but I've disabled it completely, multiple reboots and still the same.

The laptop is 90% of the time docked and plugged in. But the battery is smart to not start re-charging until it dips under 95% so I don't think there should have been any 100%->99%->100% oscillations to damage the battery. Temps also stay cool since it's always on a cooling pad; CPU and GPU stay under 70 under gaming load. Thoughts? Is this the sign of a dead battery? Should I be asking for a replacement?

Can someone please help me out with this issue by checking their idle power consumption? Install the intel graphics command center from MS store. Then navigate to system->Power tab and let me know their charge rate when under idle and their battery ETA is showing 3-4 hours. Mine is at -33800mW, I have no idea what it should be at idle to get the 4 hours battery life.

I've never seen anything like this before, it's like my Optimus is broken. Get this...
Hybrid mode on/optimus enabled: Idle power consumption 34000mW, no G-Sync option in NCP, about 1.5-2 hours battery
Hybrid mode off/optimus disabled: Idle power consumption 16000mW, G-Sync option in NCP, about 3.5 hours battery

Wtf? This is tried both with Lenovo Vantage & using the BIOS to switch between dGPU/hybrid.

    (Cross posted from RFD):

I don't want to install the Intel command center but I do use the lightweight BatteryInfoView:

    https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/battery_information_view.html

I'm discharging at an average of 14,428 mW rate over five minutes idle (low of 13,764 mW, high of 18,173 mW during that period). That's with Hybrid enabled, Windows power plan set to Balanced (PowerPlanSwitcher), Lenovo Quiet Mode enabled (FN-Q), ThrottleStop running at -140.6 mV as well as other utilities in the background such as Malwarebytes, Logitech Gaming Software, AquaSnap, etc. Firefox is open with two windows and around 20 tabs with BatteryInfoView in the foreground updating every 1 second and logging every 60 seconds, no refreshing tabs or other activity. Full discharge is estimated at about 4 hours and 21 minutes. Will check out with Hybrid disabled at a later time.

Undervolt for the cpu is a must if wanting to get the most out of the laptop while gaming. Run couple of benchmarks etc to see what kind of temps and core clocks you get. Then see some guides from youtube how to undervolt your machine for the best results and basically that is it. I think the 17 inch version has better thermals than 15 inch anyway.

You can also try and find a better color profile settings for the screen. I found some good settings from reddit last summer. Just to get the screen looking a bit brighter, helps in most of the games (basically its just a contrast setting). Or you can also just use nvidias own in game screen filters.

Or you could just ignore everything and use it out of the box. If you dont actually care so much about the tinkering and getting the last drops of performance out of the machine. Its still a great machine out of the box!

You can see what bios version you got. There are 2 major differences in the versions. Older versions give you max fan control by pressing fn+q and newer versions have 3 different temperature modes. Some people swear that the older ones are better, some say that newer ones get more performance. You can update the bios while you update all the drivers and windows etc if you want, but it all comes down to personal preference. You can use weeks playing around with the bios/undervolt/GPU overclock settings, changing thermal paste/pads. But I dont think its advisable right at the start. Just enjoy the laptop at start and after that maybe do tinkering if you think its needed!

    Thank you Sacks
I do like to tinker...but I still have my alienware for that.

I will play a few games then maybe try an undervolt....see how temps go.

So is it fair to say that one is likely to get bad backlight bleed if they buy a 17" Y740?

( please no HID Evolution comments. They have a system that means you have to pay $100 more for a better screen or you likey wont get one)

Can i ask if you can achieve 60w tdp on the cpu as well as 90w on gpu? Or will the gpu be stuck at 80w unless the cpu is set to 45w?

I have the 15” model so not sure.It should be able too but I suspect temps will be pretty high for the CPU.
The power brick is beefy enough .

You can get 60W tdp with 90W GPU power. You have to crank up the wattage for the boost thing also. But as you said, the temps will hit max and machine will thermal throttle. I mean, in Battlefield V I used to get around 90C on cpu with 40W tdp limit :D So its not ideal and I dont think its actually usable. I used to crank it up to 60W for some benchmarks (when the machine was new and had a bit of a benchmark score contest with a friend with a i7-6700K/GTX1070), but beyond that its a no go.
And i have the 15 inch also

Quick question on the 17" y740 with the 8750h and 2080 maxq... Are you limited to 80 watts on the GPU or can you upgrade this version to the 90 vbios?

So are you guys accessing the advanced bios and tinkering around at all?

So many options, but half the time I get stuck with a 5w limit on the CPU!!! LOL.

easy to undo, but what have yall learned in there?

Would be nice to get a list going of useful items and settings.

Hi all. Im going to receive my y740 with 9750h and 2080mq tomorrow. Any news about the recent 1.08 bios? Anyone who can not confirm the issues that have been reported?
    Thanks!

P.S. also noticed right away that my sceen is not centered in the frame and also slightly tilted to the left aswell as a weird scratchy clicking left mouse button. Is that just my unit or did some of you experience the same?

    hello guys and gals.
    I have my legion Y740 9750h with a 2060rtx.
Well, i am really enjoying my lap a lot, though i have some concerns about thermals and truly need your help.

I have undervolted my 9750 running - 125 on cashe and -250 on core.
I have also underclocked my cpu at 3.6ghz and seems that i miss just 1% on performance.

I have also changed the pads of the vrms on cpu and gpu(with arctic pads 0.5 mm).
The heatsink seems to be uneven,i have made some test so far with kryonaut, mx-4 and mastergel nano.
So far the mastergel maker nano though its thickness seems to be the best option.
I dont have the same temps on all cpu-cores. Max Temps on core No 0,2,4 is 70C-72C while max temps on core 1,3,5 is 62C-64C.
Well my heatsink is uneven no doubt for that, with 1mm thermal pads i get worse temps than with 0.5mm thermal pads.

So even undervolted and underclocked i have one big problem.

My keyboard comes hot, not much, but you can tell that is warm, while playing lets say 1 hour session in overwatch come to the hot side.
I measure the temp on the center of my keyboard where it sits the cpu and gpu and i have a temp of 42C...
while the wasd area temps come to 30-35 degrees of C.

    So is there a solution?
I am thinking of takeout the motherboard and place a tape of heat insulation or something.
Do not get me wrong,i just love my legion, it is an amazing laptop out of the box, i just need a solution.

    Best regards.

    Beware!! Its scarey in there.
U prob can kill your lappy.

    1. Enter bios.

    2. Hold FN.

    3. Run your finger from left to right, top to bottom of the 3 rows of lettered keys.

    4. Let go of FN.

    5. Hit F10 to save and exit.

    6. Select "yes"

    7. When comp reboots enter bios and advanced menu is unlocked for 1 use.

If you try to adjust turbo power limits you will likely drop to a 5w power limit on the cpu!!

But you can undervolt in there (have to enable overclocking)
and turn up the turbo time limits, etc.

Is it possible from Advanced Bios to adjust permanent the fan curves or able to run by % at dedicated temperatures?
eg when cpu hits 70C to run 90% the rpm of the fans?

Does anyone in here have tried and tested to apply gelid gc extreme? i read that gelid gc and phobya nanogrease extreme have best aplly with uneven heatsinks.

    best regards.

I repasted with cooler master mastergel maker, its comparable to those as they are all a bit thicker. I didnt really measure my temps before but after repasting, the initial boost to 70 watts still lets temperatures rise to 90+ degrees and settles down to low to mid 80s when 50 watts are reached in performance mode. Maybe you can do a measurement with the stock paste with aida64.

    thank you for your answer.

But to all owners of the y740 with 9750h i want to ask you about the keyboard temps.

Does your keyboard get warm / hot while playing or in between game sessions?

in my legion my center part of keybord gets warm to hot.
On the wasd area and the far right area its warm.

    thankyou.

Yes you can set two temp limits with two temps.

    So 75% at 60C, 100% at 70C is about what I tried.
But I use max fans for the extra 10W, so fan curve useless for me.

would you mind to tell me where in the adavnced bios you made these changes?

And what do you mean that you use the max fans for the extra 10w?

Sorry first time Lenovo user, i feel kinda noobish!

    thank you in adavnce

    I have the I7 8750H with 2070MQ.
    I am on bios 1.07.
This let me press FN + Q to set the fans to max speed, this also sets the 2070 to use 90W instead of the default 80W.

So fan curve is useless for me unless I undervolt GPU.

The setting you want for fans is under the advanced tab, called "Thermal Configuration"
In that tab select "Platform Thermal Configuration"

    See attached pic

To undervolt you go to "Overclocking Performance Menu"
First option is to enable, then you get the attached pic options.

    Under "Processor"
you enter the Voltage offset in milliVolts at
    "Core Voltage Offset"
Then have to set the "Offset Prefix" to -

I use 145mV with negative prefix.

BUT, This one only lasts until you reboot the next time.
So may still be easier to just use "Throttlestop"

Use F10 to save and restart.

If you mess up your Lappy enter bios and press F9, then F10 to save and restart.
It has gotten me outta crap a few times now, so hopefully you dont wreck yours.

    Cheers!

I will play some Apex for an hour or two then I will post a thermal image of the keyboard.
It gets warm for sure, i would not say "hot" but then again its always cold in my house, I put my feet on the power brick to stay warm haha.

Stay tuned for pics in about 2hrs.

Maybe ill play some COD BR too, its hard on this thing. Even min settings I only get like 100FPS!

Hmm that is strange. I have everything maxed out but motion blur and weapon movement blur turned off (depth of field I keep on) and SMTT 2x and get 120fps on average.

@Kalen ,mate mind to kindly ask you to reupload your image with the thermal pads and thicknes you used?
I saw your last messages on previous pages on this thread but it seems i cant see the image posted.

Finger crossed with coronavirus these days, i am waiting four shees of arctic thermal pads 145 x145 (two sheets with 0.5mm thickness and two of 1.0mm thickness).I will remove the thermal insulation film of the backside of the motherboard and i will apply the arctic pad to insulate the heat coming from the processor and gpu and transfering to the keyboard.

i love my lapy so badly, just need some modifications to operate at its best.

Not sure, I run my i7-9750H at stock speedshift at 45 and -155 mV undervolt with 2070 Max-Q on a curve flattened at 1765 MHz. Seemed to maximize the potential of my machine. And get good temperatures too (with the back raised of course)

    Im on 8750H rtx 2070mq.

    Undervolt -145mV,
    Gpu oc +195MHz,
    Mem oc +300MHz,

In this test I was getting about 100FPS in COD Battle Royal most of the time, everything maxed at 100% render scale.

Will try with min settings and report back.

Thermal image at end of game session attached.
Max surface temps seem to get to about 50C, thats the metal behind the keys.

What temp do you consider "hot"?

I just noticed today on my Y740-15IRHg that the Lenovo Vantage button does not work.

My other macro keys and keyboard brightness controls work fine, but that one button does not bring up Lenovo Vantage. I know that sometimes it's a blessing (with it not activating if I press it instead of the escape button) - but it's not working when I WANT to open Lenovo Vantage...

I also realized that the screen capture or record button is not doing anything.

I deleted vantage long ago, but the record button also does nothing for me.
I may have deleted or disabled xbox mode though.

Hi all, got this y740 with 2080 maxq and 8750h on fleabay for $1050 about 3 weeks ago with a 20% off coupon from VIP outlet or something like that, and no, I don't work for them.

Anyway, I flashed the 2080 with a different 90w tdp bios and am getting a marginal performance lift, maybe 5% better, obviously overclocked on both bioses. anyway, just letting you all know it is po-seeblay, lol
Here's a screen shot: y740 bios flashed to another brand.gif
Oh, an I didn't read through all 175 pages, if somebody already did this, then sorry everybody. BTW, the bios is from a very similar 2080 max q, but from another manufacturer. I'm running -155 on cpu and -150 cache, 142mhz over on gpu and 440mhz over on gpu mem. getting about 8100 on timespy. -8400 gpu score and 7000 cpu score, absolutely zero issues with temps with the new bios, as another user, on another forum, with a 2080 max q, who modded with a 90w bios experienced. I'm maybe getting like 4 or 5 celcius higher temps, maxing out at about 76c. The primary vbios ID was identical, or I wouldn't have tried it. The razer 2080 maxq was not the same. The secondary vbios was different (obviously, its from another manufacturer) but F-it, I'm still in the 90 day return policy, crossed my fingers and hit "Y" with the nvidia command line flash tool, bypassing the consistency checks, obviously. The subvendor did not change from Lenovo as its hard coded. What is really weird is the that gpu and vram overclock is identical to what it was on the older bios. It does definitely boost much higher, but for shorter periods of extreme boost, almost reaching 2ghz, for literally only seconds. I think if there were a liquid cooler I could modify to fit, or a peltier cooler, I might give it a try. I have a liquid cooler with an asetec pump, that has a mini radiator that I pulled out of a decom server at a data center that might work, but the bottom would get much thicker, lol

Also, i used prolimatek pk3 on the cpu and gpu, completely redid all thermal pads with quality ones, and ripped out the huge ass grill (mesh) out of the bottom, lol, that this was choking the crap out of the fans!

I also have a y545 with rtx 2060 non max q and 9750h, did all the same above except flash vbios, getting a bit over 7000 on timespy. my handle is gigahurts on 3dmark if anyone cares, got a few top scores with certain gpu/cpu combos (as far as laptops), I think I have the 1660ti with 9750h. is a dell g3 or g5 or something like that. anyway, best advice I can give is always take the frickin mesh out of the bottom, you'll notice mucho improved-o temps, as well as better system board temps, vrms, mosfets, chokes, shunts, all ic-s basically, including the nvme and ssds. I really like those tongfeng clones though, eluktronics, etc, bios is fully frickin unlocked and you can overclock the ram on all of them, I have an evoo with 9750h and 1650, overclocked the ram to 3000mhz (went from 20x 133mhz to 30x 100mhz, dont do 22x 133mhz, you will get VERY undesireable results unless you have really good "b" die ram...., careful though, a lot of settings you don't want to touch, unless you enjoy large, rectangular, heavy frisbees. Stupid lenovo makes it a frickin pain in the ass to get into the advanced bios, (goodness gracious, press every frickin key, lol!)

    Hope everybody is staying healthy!

Is it safe to try and overclock the RAM in the Y740??

I was thinking about dropping the timings one number and see, but I have never overclocked RAM before so have no idea which numbers are safe to change or the ratios required if that is a thing even lol.
