I thought Performance was required for 90W power mode?
-
Below are the power limits that are set for each thermal mode:
Fn+Q - Quiet
GPU - 80W
CPU - 25W PL1 and 45W PL2
Fn+Q - Balanced
GPU - 80W
CPU - 60W PL1 and 80W PL2
Fn+Q - Performance
GPU - 90W
CPU - 70W PL1 and 107W PL2
However, if we set the turbo ratio limit to 32 then the maximum CPU power will probably not exceed 20W at 3.2GHz. In my case, I did not notice any FPS improvement between 80W and 90W for the GPU, therefore I prefer to use Quiet mode since it provides faster fans speeds and a lower temperature overall.Last edited: Jun 24, 2020 -
Awesome info. Thanks mate!
I'm very happy with this laptop, and I agree - it's probably not worth it to repaste, but I did and it's all fine.
-
Anyone?
-
Sorry mate, I don't use a headset at all, so can't help you with this.
-
I am pretty sure that this has nothing to do with the laptop at all.
-
Thanks for the reply both of you.
I am kinda 99% sure its either one of the laptop's softwares or a hardware problem because we tried different Headsets + Already formatted once. -

Does anyone here have a vbios for the RTX 2070 Super Max-Q? I'm trying to find a 90 watt vbios right now compatible with the GS66, and I haven't found one with target power set at 90watts. I've flashed the Razer Blade Advanced vbios but it has target power limits at 80 watts. I also looked at the vbios from an Omen but there is a device id mismatch.
-
Can i ask you how did made the gpu to run at 90w in balanced mode? because mine in balanced mode runs at 80w.
-
I am using Kingston Cloud Stinger wired headset and Jabra Elite 75T bluetooth headset and everything works fine for me.
-
Copy paste error. You are correct, it is 80W on Balanced, not 90W. I edited my post.

Hi, i bought an ax wireless card to swap out for the default KIller 1550i (9560NGW). Just replaced it with the new one AX201NGW ( https://www.amazon.ca/MQUPIN-Wirele...w&qid=1593046506&sprefix=ax201,aps,172&sr=8-1), but looks like I bought the wrong one (whoops) because laptop won't turn on at all. Swapped back to the old Killer wifi card and works fine.
For those that have swapped to an ax card which one did you buy? Oh my model is the Y740-15IRHg i7-9750h GTX2070 maxq. -
Maybe the one you bought is defective, otherwise your laptop should start with it.
-
AX201 works with 10th gen cpus.
Buy AX200 and it should work on your machine.
Why did you swapped Killer for AX2xx? Included wifi card is not enough for you? -
hi, question: I repasted the laptop few days ago. Temps looking good ! But I noticed one thing and that's the Intel PCH is getting very hot. Hotter then is should be. I'm wondering where that little chip is located or are they packed in the CPU nowdays?
https://imgur.com/a/oJLzjMD
-
Thx for the info, bought the AX200, installed it and works like a charm. Thx again!
As for the Killer card, nothing is wrong with it at all. I will be updating the wifi in the house to AX in the coming months so decided to get this out of the way. -
Just to inform others.
The PCH chip is located north-west from the CPU. A closer inspection showed that the heatsink is slightly bent up. It seems that there is a gap between the original thermal pad and the heatsink. I've dismantled it and put instead a 2mm thermal pad in between. Repasted everything and closed it down. Temps on the PCH are now in the low 70's. GPU + CPU hit nearly 70 max on full load with UC + UV. It's fine for me. Job done!
Nevertheless, a shame for QA of Lenovo. The heatsink is a big mess. Instead of making a proper unit they fill the spaces with bigger thermal pads to close the gaps. The memory chip block near the GPU could fit a 0.5mm pad on one and the second a 1mm pad..It's either poor QA or laziness of Lenovo or both. -
Could you take some pictures?
-
For which part? The operating temperatures or the bent heatsink? For the latter i will reuse a picture to point out. I prefer not to demount / mount that thing too much.Kalen likes this.
-
The bent heatsink and which PCH.
-
Can you describe exactly "very hot"?
-
Around 85 degrees on full load. Ive added an extra thickness to the thermal pad (2mm). It now makes better contact with the chip. I'm now on 73-75 degrees on full load.
-
Used photo of Asian i think? Red circle shows the heatsink and the PCH chip.
-
85C at peak and average is much less. Would not touch the cooling system to avoid microbends since PCH is rated at TJ Max 105C.
-
The image seem to be broken?
-
Oh dear, just looked up my PCH temps and while gaming they go over 100 C easy... Maybe it would be a good thing to open up the laptop and see that the heatsink does make a contact with it, that I havent put wrong size pad on it something like that...
Is the PCH that little third chip that looks a bit like the cpu/gpu but a lot smaller? The one that is metal looking. Or is the ones far back of the board, close to the ports that have been shown in red from the asian photo, the black looking ones?
Edit
So yeah... Opened it up and immediately saw that one of the heatsinks screws standoffs has completely come off of the motherboard. Soooo mmkay, that explains a bit. Maybe ill have to email Lenovo about this. I mean, I just played around 3 hours straight but still. About a year ago lenovo said to me that it is okay to change thermal paste etc (right to repair stuff) so it should not be a problem, hopefully...Last edited: Jun 30, 2020 -
Dunno why, but posting pics within the tag doesn't work for me. Here is the link
The red circle; the PCH makes connection to a part of the heatsink which looks like a square attached to the heatsink. Below the square are screw holes. If you screw everything down it will not presure the square part. So in my case, if the square part is already slightly bent, you can't really fix it unless you have the tools, patience & balls to bent it back. Which I prefer not, hence the fillers of 2mm pad. -
So did some testing. When I have the laptops backside lifted up with the powerbrick, the PCH gets to those 95C-100C marks when having an extended gaming session. The keyboard also gets really hot. When using the laptop without lifting it up with the powerbrick, the PCH doesnt get past 85C and the keyboard stays cool.
So there it was. I knew that the powerbrick wasnt the most ideal solution for getting more air but wow. Could open the thing up, change the paste just for laughs and put more pads under there for the PCH, but because of the broken motherboard standoff (or what is it called) I dont feel like opening it up that much anymore.. -
I really wonder why people get such a bright ideas... Like using a book for standof instead of a massive heat source was not enough?
-
Yes I know. Although it really helps with initial cpu and gpu temps. Didnt look at PCH temps before in detail. Have been looking into those cooler stand things but they all seem too expensive for what they are or then just flimsy. But you are right, better to change for a cool book.

Hello!
I have recently bought a Y740-15RHg (15", 9750H/RTX 2060) and I wanted to share my thoughts and ask a few questions.
I bought from Currys PC World for £1450, delivery was next day via DPD, all good.
This is my first ever gaming laptop and first time using a 144hz display or gsync.
Previously I had a very low spec (though good quality) laptop, a Chuwi Lapbook SE.
The metal build is nice and feels good to handle, hinges are firm. The screen housing is a bit more flexible than I expected.
The keyboard is a good size and feels good to type on. The extra keys on the left take only a short time to get used to. It would have been nice to had a numpad and it looks like there would easily had been enough room, if the keyboard went edge to edge and the extra keys were moved to the top. Also there are no end or home keys. Backlighting works well and offers three brightness levels via the keys on the left.
Trackpad is also good, feels precise and two-finger scrolling works well. Good to see proper buttons for left and right click.
The display is nice, bright and colourful, with minimal backlight bleed and no dead pixels. Gsync is available. Also the screen is matte rather than glossy, which is great.
Sound from the speakers is ok, but sound from headphones is not. I get a constant hiss and buzz with headphones plugged in (muting cuts this out). This is rather disappointing as my old laptop (£200 brand new) had clean sound output.
performance seems great, everything is fast and responsive, all the games I've tried so far run smoothly.
Can get pretty loud when gaming (even though I have it on quiet mode in Vantage).
Some questions:
The Vantage software finds the following updates:
Lenovo Keyboard Lighting Firmware update Tool for 15 inch v. 1311
Lenovo Utility Hotfix - 10 [64] v. 1.0.79.0
Killer Suite Driver - 10 [64] v. 2.1.1295
Bios Update - 10 [64] v. BVCN14WW
Can anyone confirm that these updates are ok to install? I know that sometimes updates can cause problems/make things worse.
Does the latest bios (v 1.11?) allow cpu undervolting? I haven't tried that feature yet but I don't want to miss out on it.
Should I use the intel driver update finder tool for chipset driver updates etc. or should I leave it up to Vantage/Windows update?
Is there anything I can do about the hissing/buzzing I get with headphones plugged in? It's driving me crazy. It's the same volume whatever the volume is set to in wondows, but it disappears when sound is muted.
How can I change the keyboard backlighting from blue to white?
I find that the CPU is running at high boost clock (~4.2ghz) even in old games. I'd like to reduce the max boost to 3.2 to bring down fan noise, but the option to do so is greyed out in Intel XTU. Is there some way to get this working?
The screen is running at 144hz. I'd like to try it at 60hz just so I can change back and forth to feel the difference, but I can't seem to change it in either Windows settings or Nvidia settings. Is there any way to change it?
Many thanks! -
@Ran Echelon
Literaly almost all answers to your questions can be found in last 10-20 pages. Would be nice to check first.
Updates are ok. Bios allows undervolting. Intel chipset doesn't really matter at all. backlit controlled only by iCue. Reducing cpu clocks via ThrottleStop. Refresh rate in nvidia control panel.
As for hissing sound, try disabling/turning off all microphones in either control panel or device manager and report if the issue was solved. If yes then it is connected to mic noise listening in and certain settings.
For my it is ok but I formatted stock ssd and did Win10 clean install from usb. -
Thank you.
I installed the 1.10 bios but it's not offering me 1.11 yet. I will try ThrottleStop. Nvidia control panel works if I add a custom resolution at 60hz.
Regarding the hissing sound, disabling microphones made no difference. The sound seems to get louder if I play a game. -
@Ran Echelon
FPS lock option is in Nvidia Control Panel, 3D options...
Hissing also present with all mics disabled and on battery only? -
Yes, the hissing is still there with mics disabled and running on battery.
-
Cant help, if its not software related then maybe manufacturing defect with electrical paths grounding.

Hi guys,
Why my Y740 till now still didn't get Windows ver 2004 update?
It say that my device isn't ready.
Do you all get this message also? -
BIOS version BVCN14WW is the latest offered on Lenovos download page. That's v1.10. Don't know anything about a v1.11.
This is not a Lenovo issue. Bigger Windows updates get pushed out in phases to not put too much strain on servers.Danny Utoyo likes this. -
Ah you're right, I had confused it with a similar model number.
Yes, I haven't gotten 2004 yet either. -
Those who want the 2004 update can force with Microsofts ISO Download Tool.
-
Or even better, get a Windows ISO with version 2004 and make a clean installation.
-
Indeed. That's what I did.
-
Can you identify the sound as coil whine? Like do you hear it also from the keyboard area?
If so try usb c headphones. Coil whine sound goes through the analog 3.5mm jacket. -
I don't think it's coil whine as I can't hear anything from the laptop itself (assuming the fans are off). Actually I'm glad it's not, I had coil whine on my old gaming pc (Palait 980ti) and it was bad.
At the moment I just have standard 3.5mm headphones but I'm thinking of getting an external DAC/amp and running them through that, which I assume would bypass any electrical interference that's being picked up by the 3.5mm jack. -
If the external DAC is connected to USB, then yes, but if you connect it on the 3.5mm jack, then the interference will be carried on. I would also try a pair of Bluetooth headphones and you will not have cables anymore around you.
-
Huh that was weird, I booted up and the display was very dim, even if with brightness set to max. Rebooting fixed it though.
I've found that the sound problem goes away if I close the lid (i.e. when the screen is off).Last edited: Jul 5, 2020 -
Do a system image backup and try with booting windows in a safe mode to check if the problem still persists and after that format drive and do a clean Win10 install from USB (without connecting to LAN or wifi) with default win10 drivers. Maybe its only software issue. If not then contact seller for swap for unit without issues or send it to Lenovo for warranty repair.
-
Did you update to the newest BIOS and have HDR games and apps slider toggled? I had that too. Every game was very dim but hitting the brightness down or up, or the volume, would have it temporarily be fine. Unfortunately it seems to be a new problem they introduced... Once I turned off that setting it was fine again.

Good ideas but I think i'll just try and sidestep the issue for now with a usb dac.
Hmm I did update the BIOS but I didn't touch the HDR slider. Still, it was fine after a reboot.
The other problem I'm having is that my download speeds are about half what they should be (35Mbps vs 75+Mbps). I've updated the Killer drivers and tried a few things to no avail, I might just install an Intel NIC.
