That message about the unknown device was really bugging me too, since looking through the device manager showed no "Unknown device" listings. I thought it may have been a wireless mouse I hooked up on day 1 (and unhooked an hour later), but that wasn't it. I then went to the TPY page on lenovo, downloaded 20-something updates (some from October even), and after installing everything for windows 8.1 x64 the message is gone.

Hi JJ22, thier is no external means of seeing the battery status, just look at the bottom right and click on the battery status indicator. I have kept a txt file of helpfull hints, links and other stuff from this forum and others. I've also read quite a bit on Windows 8.1, as it's new to me.

The only updates I have done to my machine are the Wacom Drivers and the Bios drivers. Both really easy, just download and double click on them, windows does the rest. I've not had the need to do anything else, screen works great, wifi works, no design flaws, battery life is good (6hrs+), touch pad and track pad work fine for me.

If you want PM me with your email and I'll send you the text file I've kept, I refer to it alot for info I've picked up over the last 3 months reading through forums and pages of info.

Hey guys, is there a way to configure the trackpoint / trackpad so that I don't have to click down on the trackpad in order to click somewhere?

I'd like to be able to just lightly tap the trackpad instead when using the trackpoint. This works fine when using the pad by itself but when you use the trackpoint for the mouse, that feature seems to be disabled.

Any chance anyone knows how to keep the keyboard backlight default as "on"? This is surprising there isn't a simple answer.

    I have tried in:
    - Bios
    - Keyboard (Control Panel)
    - Lenovo Power Management

Any ThinkPad aficionados that help a novice?

I don't think you can default it to on. Switching it on is simple enough; just click Fn + space bar to toggle between 2 levels of brightness & off.

If you are from the States, yes. Currently the only place you can purchase the digitizer version is through Lenovo's website. There was actually a smackdown done by Lisa Gade from MobileTechReview.

Microsoft Surface Pro 2 vs. Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga Comparison Smackdown - YouTube

I don't know if that will help. It really depends on your needs.

I tried the Surface Pro 2 for a couple weeks, I like the Thinkpad Yoga exponentially better.

Here's how it broke down for me:

    Surface Pro 2
    - Great Concept, bad execution
    - Keyboard was crap... tried both the Touch & the Type
    - Annoying to have NO place to put the Stylus when charging (which was often)
    - Charger was a pain to actually connect (MacBook Pro or Air much easier magnetic connection; Physical connection on Thinkpad Yoga clearly easier)
    - Battery Time was pretty bad as I eluded to above
    - Digitizer is too narrow --> This was a big deal for me. I wanted the ability to take notes by hand and have a fully functioning laptop. The Surface Pro 2 is just too darn narrow & made my notes much longer, and thus more annoying to scroll through.

    Thinkpad Yoga
+ The Thinkpad Yoga screen is basically the size of a notebook piece of paper. It feels much more natural to write on. Also, if you have plenty of space, you can lay the Yoga completely flat & there is a much narrower space between the table top & screen. It makes for a much more comfortable handwriting experience.
    + Battery life is better
    + More customizable hardware
    + Better build quality
+ The "Yoga" positions are actually kinda useful. I thought it might be gimmicky but I particularly like the keyboard facedown with the screen angled towards me. Very stable and great for surfing while couch potato-ing.
    - Matte Finish on screen (Can be safely removed with a little work. Screen much better with the screen protector removed imho)
    - Annoying driver issues & updates (Hopefully this settles down in a couple months)

Well thats fantastic to see. Ive been in love with my thinkpad for the past 2 or 3 years so i wanted to go in that direction. I had a SP1 earlier in the year but never quite felt 100% impressed like i should have for that price.

quick question, how does the penning on the thinkpad yoga work compared to the sp2? From what i can remember the active digitizer on the SP1 drew thinner than my x230T, and a little bit more accurately

Is it possible (and easy) to take notes with the stylus while the Yoga is in presentation mode or does the screen fold back from the force of the hand?

What I find with these Yoga while laying down on the couch or bed is that you don't even need to hold the tablet while viewing. No hands. Just lay the other half on your stomach or midsection. With Ipad or Nexus, you have to use at least one hand to hold it.

Honestly, I didn't do that granular of a comparison on the inking/penning. I will say though, the accuracy and quality is not noticeably better or worse when comparing the two. The bigger improvement on the Yoga is when I'm selecting and converting the inking into text in OneNote. It seems to be a smoother process on the Yoga... I'm guessing that's due to the i7 & 8GB of ram on the Yoga.

Hey guys. Earlier in this thread I posted some negative stuff about TPY. I have recently received my third model and have been highly satisfied with (almost) everything.

I'm such a tool with computers, though, that one problem arised now. I wanted to use Razer Nostromo with this, and went to check for the driver program and there were Razer Synaptics that seemed to support it so I downloaded that as the driver for Nostromo. Well, now my touchpad on TPY doesn't work. I already uninstalled Razer Synaptics but it didn't help (multiple reboots done).

Before breaking anything more, I thought I'd ask here. Should I now re-install the Lenovo Synaptics drivers or should I do something else? And is this clear that touchpad stopped working because the Lenovo synaptics clashed with Razer synaptics? At this same boot that I had Razer Synaptics installed I also plugged in one normal mouse, Rapoo keyboard (standard wireless), new monitor and plugged in Razer Nostromo.

    Kinda panicking here :(

Ever since reading this thread from page 1 and as it keeps on going on and on now on page 182+, I can finally say that I feel confident and ready to purchase this product. As time has gone, and ever since the product first launched (with hardware, software and physical issues), Lenovo seems to have listened to us and improved those issues, as I now hardly see anyone talking negatively about thinkpad yoga.
Not having the yoga in my hands quite yet, its hard to say, but it seems like those who are now receiving their yoga are getting quality products, well improved over those that got them first. Not without its issues, but improved since the first few got out to the public.
This seems to be a great product, and the one I have wanted ever since I dreamed about the Ideapad Yoga coming out with a digitizer version so I can do my sketching right on the screen. Now that its here, I don't know how I can pass upon it.

FYI - tonight I had problems connecting my TPY to the hotels free wireless internet. My phone connected just fine. My laptop, nothing. I went into the device properties and eventually found a setting for wireless 2.4GHz spacing. It was set to 20 MHz always, and the only other option was auto. I changed it to auto and then my TPY connected right away! thought you guys might want to know. I did order the AC wireless option but that setting likely exists in the standard wireless.

also, has anyone noticed the text not being as sharp in portrait mode than landscape mode? I did change the scaling to smallest / 100% and so the text is super crisp in landscape mode. But in portrait mode it seems a bit off for some reason. Not completely blurry but surely different. Granted I'm picky about stuff so I would notice it. The screen in portrait mode really sees tall and slender!

@cbracer, yes I also have that problem. Is that a general problem of those displays? At my desktop display with pivot function it's the same.. Or can this be calibrated?

I thought I could read some pdf-books in tablet portrait mode, but with this fuzziness it's forgetable =(

There is a big possibility that this is related to the anti glare film.

It acts as a polarising filter to block light ect and its probably been designed for landscape mode due to this being a laptop mainly. Have you guys removed the glare coating?

Could some who has removed the glare coating check if they have the same problem?

Last night: wifi dropped twice for no reason, meanwhile both my phone and tablet were working fine.
This morning: BSOD, nothing listed in the event log. Just a hard freeze and crash.
Later this morning: won't wake from sleep, forced reboot. Again.

I have spent hours trying to get this thing to work properly. Updating crap, carefully managing everything. I still have the issue with the Metro apps crashing. Chrome still gives me an error on every restart. Basically every time I touch it I've had an issue.

Frankly, at this point I'm sick of this piece of s#!t. I can't believe the amount of effort I've expended.

Returning it today. Buying something else.

Buy Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga Touchscreen 2-in-1, Core i7 - Microsoft Store

Uhh, so is this a good deal? A similarly configured model on Lenovo.com is $1,769 ($1,592 after B&N discount). The only perceivable difference is the AC card on the Lenovo.com version.

$1,399 seems to be a great price. What are your thoughts?

Edit: neeevermind, doesn't have a Wacom digitizer. I knew there was a catch.

Edit2: seems to be "discontinued" on other websites. Strange. Any reason why?

Seriously?! There's clearly a hardware fault with yours so instead of getting all worked up just return it for a new one.

I understand the frustration but its obvious there's a hardware issue which can happen on any product. Sensible thing is to exchange it for a new one. There's nothing out atm that even competes with the Yogas feature set so if you bought it then I'm sure there was a reason.

I think Lenovos website is the best place to buy it from if you want a perfect product with no defects, they are built custom to order and so far all the ones ordered from lenovo have been perfect. Whereas from retailers you never know what batch your going to get from, it could be a build made months ago ect..

The anti-glare film is NOT a polariser! A polarisation film stuck to the display would do nothing to reduce glare, and would simply make the display darker. It is simply a slightly diffuse film applied to make the reflections more diffuse (i.e. closer to a Lambertian reflector) and reduce glare (sharp reflections from a flat surface).

While I am still waiting for my Yoga to be dispatched, one thing you may want to try is turning off ClearType and seeing if there is still a noticeable difference between text in landscape and portrait mode. ClearType is designed to take advantage of the subpixel arrangement of LCD panels, but rotating the panel changes the subpixel arrangement (from horizontal RGB striped to vertical RGB striped). If for some reason the ClearType setting is not changed when rotating, it would cause text to look blurred.

You're right, there is some significant influence by ClearType.
I just didn't found a proper setting for portrait mode. In the landscape mode the letters become much clearer with a good ClearType setting (text at 100%). But when I deactivate it and switch from landscape to portrait, I just don't see a big quality difference anymore.
The conclusion for me is, that there is a ClearType setting needed that is optimized for portrait rotation..

Have read all 184 pages of the thread, some very insightful information especially with regard to the specification

On the Lenovo Ireland website they are flogging the Thinkpad Yoga with a lowly 1366 x 768 screen with i3-4010U for €830 Euro equating to $1,120 USD!

An i5-4200U with 1920 x 1080 is only available with digitiser and 8GB for €1,225 Euro equating to $1,654 USD. Both come with a 500 Gb drive so you have to pay more for the SSD.

As I am heading to the States in June 2014, will Best Buy shops have the I5-4300U with 1920 x 1080 screen with 8Gb ram but without digitiser available?

    Hello,

I have just received my thinkpd Yoga, and it's a wonderfull machine.
But i have encountered one issue with the audio.

the speakers work great but when i plug a headset, the sound just comes out from the left ears.
I've re install the connexant driver, try to modify the balance, but without results.

The left and right sound all come out from the left ears.

My headset work great with another PC or Phone.

Have you any idea? Do you think it could be a hardware problem ?

    Thanx in advance.

It could be something to do with the Thinkpad Yoga having a combined Mic and Headphone port. Have you tried another pair of headphones? You might find twisting the headphone jack while you plug it in will help, or even not fully plugging it in and play a song to see if that activates both speakers or not. I have had some weird things with headsets not working well on combo jacks ect.

Does you headset's 3.5mm jack have 3 gold/black/white rings on the metal part, or only 2?

I've tried with two pairs of headphone (one is a Samsung S3 set with a mic, and the other one is the Marshall Headset with a mic too)
They both work with another device (like my S3 phone for exemple).

But with the Yoga, the sound just comes out from the left.
I've tried twisting it, or not fully plugging it, but it doesn't work.

My headset have 3 rings on the metal part.

It seems the headset is not properly detected.
When i plug it, the device manager for the Headset (conexant SmartAudio HD) looks like this (see attachment) : This device is not plug at the moment.

That's not right, have you done much to the laptop?? Might be worth doing a full reset.

Otherwise you can try this before a reset.

Delete any sound drivers you have downloaded. Then redownload a fresh driver from lenovos support page.

Now go to control panel and uninstall conexant audio software if there is any, and then go to device manager and right click on the audio device and press 'uninstall' and tick the 'delete drivers' check box then press OK. Might take a few minutes. Then do a reboot.

Now when it boots, windows will automatically source a driver, check functionality if it works.

Then install the driver you downloaded earlier and do a reboot, then report back.

It sounds more hassle then it actually is, this should reset the audio device and its drivers completely :)

I had a similar problem the first time I used the headphonejack. It didn't go all the way in, had to use a lot of force and now it works perfect, no need to use force anymore.

That's good to know. The U.S/Canada sites really need to catch up. I'm still waiting for a i5 with 8gb of ram model with 500gb HDD. NFC would be a nice bonus. Hopefully they will follow soon.

Anyone know of a good coupon code for the canada or U.S site?

i've tried to re-install the audio driver, after de-installing conexant utility and all the drivers, but i doesn't address the issue.
I've tried a complete reinit with the factory configuration, but it does the same : the sound just comes out form the left side of my headset (but fortunately from both side of the speakers)

One thing to add : the Lenovo Solution Center reports me one unknown device.
I don't know which device, and i don't manage to correct it.
Somebody has the same issue ?

Are you sure the headphone jack is going in fully, another user needed to apply a bit of force and then it was fine.

Not saying snap it but a push might work??

    Hello Guys,

Does any of you know how the SSD cache works? I would like to replace my HDD, but I want to make sure Intel RST is disabled before doing so (painful experience on my desktop with that). However, there is nothing about Intel Rapid Storage either in the BIOS or in the installed utilities... Any advice?

I've tried it, but unfortunately my jack is still fully plug.
It seems i have a hardware problem with the jack inside the Thinkpad.

And NFC antenna does not increase the laptop price as I tested it.

I have never used NFC, does anybody use it and what for? Please, share your toughts. Does it make sense to cancel my order and make new one with NFC?
