So I have a Core i5-540M with dedicated graphics and 9 cell. I made my own battery setting that's essentially a Power Saver setting with a display brightness of 0%. I have about 1:30 left, so I'll probably hit 5 hours when it reaches 0%. Is that a reasonable time? Are there other ways that I can change to make the battery life longer?

Also, there's two different time readings for the battery. There's the one that comes with Lenovo (the green/black one) and the one that's the Windows 7 one (the white one on the taskbar). I'm just wondering if there's a difference in the readings and which one is more accurate. The Lenovo one is usually less while the Windows 7 one is more. Also, sometimes the time readings are off by a lot.

Any info would be great. Thanks!

Just got my new Thinkpad T410 and I have 2 questions.
    1) Anyone have issues installing Windows7 x64? I have my own license for this was was planning on doing a clean wipe and install with my own copy. Anything to be concerned or worried about?
    2) When I went to plug in the battery, I noticed under where the battery would go, there was a purple tab that looks like something you pull out, similar to what you see on a toner cartridge (but obviously smaller). Does anyone know what this may be for or is it just sitting in a slot.
    Thanks all!

    1) I did an install of Windows 7 ultimate x64 with no issues. My 410i came with Windows 7 Home Premium x64, and I found a folder on the system with all the driver install files. So I copied the driver folder onto an external disk before i did the install and used those files to install the drivers after I installed Windows 7 Ultimate..

    2) I think that's where the SIM card for the data service goes.

If you use your own copy you will be wasting the license. The laptop came with an OEM license and you can use that on 32-bit or 64-bit, so there's no need to waste your other license. You can reinstall 64-bit using either the key on the laptop sticker, or use my ABR program to backup and restore the license without having to deal with activation.

The only issue here is if the laptop came with Win7 Pro and you want to change it to Win7 Ultimate or something like that. In that case, you will need to use your own license.

    @Shinigami: Thanks.
@HolyBull: Thanks, I'll copy the drivers off before the install.
@orev: I am not exactly sure the version that came with my laptop, but I thought it was a non-Pro 32 bit version and I wanted to install the Pro 64 bit version. I have all the media from my Action Pack subscription, but I'll review the links in your signature before proceeding.

Fn + F8, the click manage settings. Over in the "UltraNav" tab you can fiddle with the trackpoint.

I just received my ThinkPad T410i and finished setting it up. Partway through, the fan came on. It just kept getting higher and higher pitch and louder and louder. Granted, it's not incredibly loud, it is irritatingly loud and whiny.

I tried the available power setting options for fan control including "Reduce noise dynamically" and "Passive CPU cooling." The result was a frequent, yet random, ramping up and down of the micro jet engine.

The moments of quiet are nice, but they end up making it so you can't tune out the whine when it comes back.

I tried SpeedFan, which failed to pick up the signal for the fan speeds and only reads temperatures. I also tried TPfancontrol, but it wouldn't run. It says it cannot find winio.sys, which is clearly in the same directory.

I will be contacting Lenovo shortly to see what they can do, but seeing as how it's brand new, I don't think a repair or replacement could change anything.

If anyone is still active, please offer some feedback.

I'm looking at the Dell E6410 and Lenovo T410. Can anyone comment on the speakers on the T410? I assume they're placed on either side of the keyboard (this is good placement), but have read a few reviews that criticize the volume they produce. Is there any validity to these criticisms or are the speakers fine for general use?

MattB85: I've got a T410s, and I've found the speakers to be loud enough for use in a quiet room with some ambient noise, but it definitely isn't loud enough for, say, a room full of people. I'd prefer them to be able to get a little louder. An unrelated criticism, they sound a little "compressed" to my ears (though not unbearably so).

    Hi Everyone,

I've been stalking the forums for some time now and after quite a bit of research I've decided on a T410. I had a question about the 3100m though, while I was playing with the configurations yesterday I only saw an option for the 256mb 3100m, but today when I went to order there was a 512mb option for about $25 more, needless to say I went with the 512mb option.

Anyway, considering that all the reviews I've come across were based on the 256mb card I was wondering if this was a completely new option lenovo just added and whether the extra memory would provide a considerable performance boost graphics wise?

    Thanks in advance.

I'm pretty sure it's a completely new option since when I configured mine I didn't have the option for 512mb. Now I'm sad that I only have the 256mb :(

it will offer a considerable increase in games. modern games will barely fit in 256mb. i'm pretty pissed now, i just ordered a week ago and i would pay $50 for the extra video ram. god damnit. and it's surely soldered to the motherboard, so it would need a whole new motherboard to upgrade. !@(*&#!@)(*#()!*@

think lenovo would offer me a trade? :(

I don't think you need to worry, the consensus seems to be that the extra 256MB is negligible.

whats the lenovo guarantee on displays? I have a black spot in the middle of my display, in the backlight. I can tell because if i put something over the black spot (like a window or some text), and then move my head around, the black spot moves away. i should not have to deal with this on a modern computer. Dell has a "premium panel guarantee" on their 1440x900 panels, guaranteeing perfection. Does lenovo have anything like this?

Greetings, all! I purchased a new T410 for an employee, and unfortunately she dropped it and the screen is shattered. Lenovo is quoting $950 to replace the screen, which seems absurd given that I purchased the laptop for $1200.

I've disassembled many a desktop and laptop in the past, and build my own desktop systems. I'm fine replacing the LCD myself, although I suspect that would void the remainder of the 2 year warranty. I think I'm going to have to be fine with that, given they want nearly the full value of the laptop just to fix the screen.

So would anyone be able to point me to any good resources for purchasing a replacement LCD screen, and instructions for removing the existing screen?

I did some googling, and found Laptop Parts & Repair, Notebook Computer Repair, Printer Parts - Spare Parts Warehouse. Is there a better place?

    Thanks much.

The panel model for the WXGA+ 1440x900 screen seems to be: LG Philips LP141WP3 (TL)(A1)

Not sure about WXGA 1280x800. If I had to guess it's probably LP141WX5 but again I am NOT sure about that.

Hopefully the model numbers will help you find one on the cheap. You can use the hardware maint. manual here to install the LCD screen you buy. Lenovo Support & downloads - Hardware Maintenance Manual - ThinkPad T 410 and T 410i

Please let us know how it goes! I've not actually read any reports of anyone attempting an LCD replacement for the T410 yet, and I would be very interested in the results.
That $900 quote is utterly insane!

I'm currently shopping for new laptops and the t410 looks really good. I have a couple questions. Please, can someone who ACTUALLY has their t410 configured with an i7 AND an nvidia 256 (or even the new 512) option please chime in on battery life and temperature.

How many hours do you get on your t410? Is that surfing the internet? Watching videos online? Brightness at a minimum? Does it get really hot while watching videos? Does it get really hot in general? etc ...

I'm coming from a 4 year old HP dv6000 which gets abysmal battery life and gets extremely hot. Please when you respond tell me your config for your processor, video card, and which battery you purchased.

    ***LENOVO COUPON BELOW***

I'd also like to inform those of you who are also in the market about lenovo's two day sale (started yesterday) on the t series. For the t410 if your configuration is 1499+ you get 20% off. Anything less than that is 10% off. Please note that this is not combinable with the educational discount. The coupon code is 'USPTSERIES'. I think its even a better deal for those of you who are looking to buy a t410s.

I have a T410 with the I7 620 processor and the Nvidia gfx, at light browsing, some writing, checking newsgroups and so on, I get around 3 hours on a 6 cell battery. It gets a little warmer than my T400, but not much, usually around 40-45 degrees Celsius when not doing anything serious. When I stress it real hard it can go up to 88 degrees Celsius.

Welp, my thinkpad has been sitting in an EasyServ location for the last 3 days "on hold waiting for customer information". I called about this two days ago and they said they needed to confirm the repair with "corporate complaints" or something and that I would be getting a call the next day. They never called. I know they have my number.

What a hassle. All this because they shipped me a defective unit. When I first called they offered to "bring my unit up to warranty spec for only $750"! Outrageous! You ship me a defective unit and then offer to make it warranty spec for 3/4 the price of the machine? THAT'S INSANE! The idea is insane, but on top of that these screens are $100 tops for the part price. Utter madness!

    Dell, by comparison, will:
    - replace a high res screen for any reason if you are dissatisfied. 0 dead pixel 0 stuck pixel guarantee.
    - exchange your machine with an identical one, free of charge for 30 days
    - return your Latitude machine, free of charge, no restocking fee, for any reason for 30 days

Lenovo thus far has been utterly terrible in comparison. I'm going to give them a chance but this may be the last Lenovo I ever purchase. Dell service is so much better I'm in withdrawal.

The best part is that I've had my machine in my hands for a whole 3-4 days (over a weekend waiting for a repair box), and I'm already nearly at the end of my return period because they count from the time of invoice and took forever to get it shipped and now are taking forever to tell me if they will repair it or not. If they won't take it back (restocking fee or not), I will be absolutely livid.

Here's my experience with Lenovo and T410.

    i7-620M, 4 GB RAM, 500 GB 7200rpm HDD, nVidia graphics w 256MB, 1440x900 LED-backlit screen, 9-cell battery.

I ordered from Canada. Then wanted to cancel, but they were very reluctant (I had to chase different employees, some were on vacation, didn't reply my e-mails etc) and finally they still sent me the laptop.

Most things look nice. The keyboard feels good. Battery reports 4+ hours. Except one thing - the screen. I'm doing some photo and video editing and it is basically unusable for that. The LED backlighting is bright, but the screen has no contrast or depth of colors. Calibration didn't help much either. I will have to return it. I hope this post helps some people to avoid the same mistake.

Yes, this machine is not going to be what you want for high end photo editing or video work. The screens offered are not going to be able to meet your needs. For this sort of work, a macbook pro is ideal. If you want to go the windows route, I would look into a workstation class computer with a good screen: e.g. the w series thinkpad (with the full HD screen) or equivalent workstation from dell or hp.

After downloading the HP synaptics driver forum.thinkpads.com • View topic - Multi-gesture Synaptics touchpad driver for XP, Vista & 7 and editing the registry to enable middle click when you press both buttons ( google HasBothButtonFeature ), the touchpad is working very nicely, and even has chiralmotion circular scrolling working properly. I'm pretty satisfied at this point, now that I finally worked out the issue with the screen & easyserv.

I still wish I had the 512mb graphics, but awell, I dont game very often anyway.

The screen, even without defects, sure does leave a lot to be desired. the vertical viewing angle is so bad that a full screen of gray is dark at the top and bright at the bottom. bleh. this is the exact same screen that dell uses on the e6410, though, so there is just no winning on this front.

overall the machine is very nice and high quality all over. there is some flex here and there, but it's nothing compared to the industry standard at this point.

I just got my T410i and when I place my palm on the left palmrest, it goes down quiet significantly compared to the right palmrest. I dont think its the actual palmrest. I believe its the rubber feet. The front two rubber feet use a nipple style. The right one gets pushed completely down. The left isn't completely down. Does anyone else have this problem?

Yeah, I used to but on my R400 machine. But since that machine got replaced by a new one under warranty (albeit for very different reasons), the new machine has no such problems.

I had a similar problem on a Dell Mini, but I don't notice it anymore. I think it probably settled under it's own weight after a few weeks, so it seems to be flat now. Maybe you'll see the same thing.

I like just about everything on the T410 (IGP), except the fan noise.
Fan Noise: It's Noisy! (compared to T61 (DGP) )

    Using TPFanControl 0.62:
Max Fan Speed (T61): 3264 rpm
    Max Fan Speed (T410) : 4522 rpm
    Difference: 1258 rpm. BIG DIFFERENCE

I don't think it's a fan blade issue. I think its just the RPMs.
One's faster than the other. At similar RPMs, both models have just about the same noise level.
    The smaller vents don't help.

Setting the T410 fan control setting on 3=>3680 RPM
Setting the T410 fan control setting on 2=>3570 RPM
Setting the T410 fan control setting on 1=>1970 RPM
    Note: Max is 7

BIOS: 1.20 (BIOS version determines fan behavior)

Well, I think it's sexy as hell! I'll tell you what's not sexy:
Cheap consumer laptops that look "cool" and will last you maybe 1 or two years if you're lucky and if you baby them as if they were made of glass. I should know, I've owned a lot (maybe 20?) of them. After my first ThinkPad, I never looked back.

To me, reliability, build-quality and smart engineering are very sexy. What other laptop gives you the "roll cage", steel hinges and the legendary ThinkPad keyboard?
