I think FHD screens will become available as soon as the current backlog eases. There are W510s being shipped right now with FHD screens. I know this for a fact![]()
I think there have have been a great demand for W510s with FHD, and compounded with the short supply this has caused the current unavailability.
I suggest to be patient and wait until it is available again. The multi-touch is really not a good deal unless you really need it. It is expensive, will scratch easier than most people think, and has slight reduced brightness/display quality.
-
-
just kidding if i were you id take the multi touch and if I wouldn't need it i'd just removed it?! I dont think thers much engineering changes involved to put on the touch panel its fraction of milimetr thick. but I might be wrong.
-
Are you willing to pay an extra few hundred $$$s to buy something just to remove it? I know our culture (USA) has conditioned everyone to *need* to *buy* what you want *right now*, but seriously, it's not worth so much extra money just to have it right now. March is not that far away (3 days?).
If you're posting here, it means you have a working computer that got you this far, and probably will last a few more months, if not longer, until the right mix of features are available.
P.S. It's the same with shipping. I know the feeling of waiting for something to arrive, but 2 weeks +- customs is really not that bad to get a custom built machine from China. -
Would it be possible to calibrate the FHD wide gamut screen to be acceptable with normal non-image based apps without any significant compromises. I don't want fluro colors (as has been reported) when web browsing to use an example.
I essentially want the benefits of this FHD screen (resolution, viewing angles, contrast ratio) and the ability to switch between color profiles as and when needed. Could I set up the optional calibration sensor to tune 2 color profiles which are then easily switchable on the fly? -

what's the difference between the drives mentioned. Which one to pick?
Thanks -

I didn't even catch that until you commented..... hahah. -
That's me. I'm a popper, wouldn't you like to be a popper too?...
Found the following from Anandtech helpful -

The X25-E is technically better (longer life, and 2 1/2 times the write speed), but I can honestly not tell the difference, and 32GB and 64GB is a tad on the low side. -
-
Hey!
What battery life do you get with a 9-Cell battery?
cu -
Yes, but I picked up the information on the 12.7mm height within this thread and for the price I thought I'd give it a shot (not a pop

In reading here and elsewhere my understanding is the 43N3412 recommended by Lenovo ( http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/...35BAB3C417CA9D77F5867D31462&model-number=4319) will leave a gap and that the W500 caddy will work in the W510 with a little razor work, but that also will leave a gap.
I already have a caddy for my W500 and when the generic arrives that I bought on eBay I'll figure out which works best (power, fit) and and post back to this thread.

I'm hoping to be able to pull the guts out of the Lenovo one and stick them in the Generic. It still has a gap, but a significantly smaller one

You folks want pictures of the SATA Adapter III, part number 43N3412?
-
You have a 160GB SDHC? How much did that little jewel cost?
Thx

Hi again !
I'm currently running Ubuntu 9.10 on this W510; It works great, except for this: No turboboost, fingerprint reader not really working (I got farter with fprint 1.0-pre, but that it).
I tried the nvidia 195 driver, but I suspect it gets me X Lookups - Did you have any ? (I thinking of updating the kernel to 2.6.33, but I'll need those NVidia drivers...) -
Ask and ye shall recieve
The Ultra SATA III adapter with one of the two OCZ Vertex Turbos I will be using.
Closeup of the internal connector with the cover removed. Just regular SATA here
Top view
Here is the external connector (you also now know I'm a white guy)
Since my W510 still hasn't shipped, I did a few perspective shots with an ultrabay battery. These will not work on the W510, but I didn't return it in time so I'll probably sell it later.
It is almost exactly the same height as the battery.
One more pic with the SSD drive. I think it is a bit short, so there is a small gap at the rear of the HDD that I'll fill with something to keep the drive snug.
Same shot, but with a 320GB spinner I have laying around. The fit is better with this drive.

Looks like it is on sale now -

+ any other comments you have such as would you buy it again, etc.

I have ordered one and i cant find much info on the touch screen so im very interested.......
Does it recognise 4 fingers? or 2? -
BTW, I just updated my imageshack subscription. Let me know if anybody wants me to upload their photos. I've got unlimited everything.
I would, of course, want this to be for W510 related pics only. -
I have read that this is "select" models only option does this suggest I'm out of luck?
(edit) just saw the out groove there on it means that it converts into 20V and goes back to a power socket ... that would explain it sorry -
Here is the link to the site where you'll find all necessary instructions on how to service your W510. including replacing FRUs
If you want to see all the insides of your baby you should choose the "complete system assembly"link it will be a shot and very informative guide.

The T510 seems to have a very robust cooling system - 3 copper heat pipes: 2 for the CPU, 1 for the GPU. -
aye aye captain!
Have no fear Tyrell is here
only one thing. can anyone explain why the guy on the video says that W510 can have 8GB of 1333. and 16GB of 1066 RAM? is it density problem or bandwidth limitation? -
Is the WWAN card with GPS a useful option? I don't think I'd be paying Verizon to use 3G on it...plus I could always get an external one if I needed it anyway, correct? Is this a useful option or the money better spent on another option, like a slice battery replacement primary battery?
-
Looks like they have a 6-cell battery too
-
You can always tether to your PDA/cellphone. For example, tethering with my iPhone 3GS, which has HSPA 7.2, I get speeds of 3-4Mbps downlink speeds, sometimes over 4. Tethering used to work great whenever I needed it before as well, including with the BlackBerry Bold 9000 and Windows Mobile-powered Treo Pro. If you don't like the cables, you can also tether via Bluetooth. -
and your normal GPS went bust after storm and only hope is your touch screen gps enabled W510 which has Japanese keyboard layout
(thats why you opted for touch screen) and to use google earth youd still need internet access. plus more accurate GPS only come as external device.
)... I posted the link to the site where they show you step by step how to replace your WAN LAN etc so it should serve you well.
but I should add if I'd had more in my pocket I would certainly bought everything possible and would upgrade it to the least last and latest.
EDIT:
ok RED GHOSTING ON THE SCREEN IS NOT MY IMAGINATION. I have same problem as this guy I am prone to think most of FHD screens affected since my 2 units are in one side of the screen or other. http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=34100 -

So, can someone do a mini review? It would be great is we could update the first post with performance figures.
What kind of battery life are folks getting with the 9-cell and the i7-720 -
but there's slight problem of ghosting and flickering refresh rate like effect.

The colors are ok but I thought the W700 screen with it's calibration was better. I'm guessing there are ways to tweak the screen with the Pantone tool to adjust color nearly indefinitely. I've seen the reports that the X-Rite calibration makes the colors too hot. I don't really know, I'm no expert. I'm mostly wanting my white to be white, black to be black, and other stuff like that due to long hours in email, spreadsheets, etc.
Windows 7 looks great set to 125% DPI.
If you have apps that use touch, get the screen. If not, save your money.
We are evaluating this machine and others from HP, Dell, etc. for our salesforce. They need high res screens and plenty of power to crunch some of the big finance models they use. I think the FHD screen is the way to go for them but they whine about laptop sizes and weight. Everyone wants an Air. -
The ghosting however is disturbing. does it happen on all brightness levels? -
must say that I expected LED backlight to be constant isnt it the main good thing about LED that its constant light with less power consumption? I guess not. the LED backlight is sham. I like CCFL more warmer and no risk of epilepsy lol -
For those of you who are lucky enough to have their W510s and kind enough to post pics, to photograph the screen you need to expose for the screen only and make sure you shoot at less than 1/50 sec otherwise the refresh with be captured. You may need to stop down your aperture significantly to acheive this shutter speed, and shoot at your lowest iso speed.
My multitouch is scheduled to ship 3/1/10, already pushed back from 2/12, so I really hope they keep this date.
Will post pics when I finally get it. -
Let us know if yours leaves China today. -
I am thinking about getting the W510, and it sounds like there have been many changes since it's introduction. I have a few questions, which I would greatly appreciate hearing about from owner's.
Does the W510 run hot? My configuration would be the i7 720 (620 if they offerred it), the SSD, and 16gb of memory. My T60p runs hot, which has led me to consider the T410s to reduce heat. I use my laptop over 12 hours a day, and just returned a Dell XPS Studio 16 because the heat crapped out the keyboard and the touchpad.
I have heard some negative comments about the touch screen. I am hoping that it offers some relief for someone with carpal tunnel syndrome. Is that a realistic expectation? Or should I try and get the non-touch screen? (which I think someone said may be unavailable).
How is the sound and the speakers of the W510? An early review was critical of the sound, even through headphones. Has that been remedied?
Firewire Connection: I read an early review, before the W510 was released, that said that the firewire port did not transfer video well, and had distortion. Has that been fixed?
I have always been very happy with my T60p, other than the heat and the many fans that I have had to replace. After being wowed by the speed of the Dell Studio 16, I thought it might be time to move on to something faster. But when I saw the specs on the W510, I am thinking that I just might have found the hot rod that I am looking for, but with the reliability and construction that I have become accustomed to.
Are owners of the W510 happy with their purchase? Or has any other computer or model now seemed more attractive?
Computers are kind of like a marriage. They generally last at least four years.
(joke!)
Thanks!

Mine is supposed to ship today (01Mar) so I called customer service to confirm.
NOW the story is that that date isn't the actual date, but reflective of the week of shipment. So even though the order page states 01Mar, it could be 01-05Mar.
Order is for a FHD Multitouch W510, which was originally ordered 21Jan.
I have been patient thusfar, and am always so when a ship date is given that is accurate, even if a month in advance. I get irritated when clearly ship dates are "targets" and have no meaning whatsoever... -
My i7 720QM is marked as "out for delivery" with FedEx today. Can't speak to the touch screen part as I opted for the HD+ LCD, but I'm also swapping in an SSD (Intel X25-M) and 16GB DDR3 RAM (1066 GHz), and I spend 10-20 hrs/day on my notebook.
I'll follow up this evening with responses to your questions below as it'll take me a few hours to do the recovery DVDs, swap out the drive and memory, etc.
Cheers, B

Looks like the dude at http://blogs.technet.com/keithcombs/archive/2010/03/01/lenovo-thinkpad-w510-final-thoughts.aspx has some decent pics at the beginning of the article. He also has some other interesting comments about the W510.

In light of Tyrell's vid... I hope we aren't going to have early adopters syndrome here. It's like M$ all over again, "Let's put this out into the world and make some easy coin on the bleeding edgers, and fix all the crap in time for v.2.0" :::::::(((((((
