My Sony F Series Quad core has this whine also, and there is a circulation of thought going on that if you set the microphone to the digital output selection in the Win7 sound options for "Microphone" it curbs this whine entirely.
I have found this makes for a cumbersome transition if you use the mic frequently for teleconferencing... someone wanna try this and see if this solution works on the W510 and share???![]()

I asked about warranty before, and got the impression Lenovo makes a high quality and reliable product. Out of curiosity, what warranty option (if different than the standard 1-year depot) are people going with?
-
IBMs had ony insignificant problems such as adapter died ,inverter (dim screen) died, breakage of LCD always good resale price. despite such good quality I'd recomend taking 2 year onsite one. I just hate sending my machine anywhere I'd rather see whos going to fix or screwup my lappy. -

I just received my W510 FHD ! (Canada, ordered 1/27).
Looks good - didn't had the chance to really play with it. But at some point, windows 7 was maybe slepping and I could not revive him; I got a couple of flashing lights...
Did anyone know where to find documentation on the different lights and Fn keys ? Can't find it !
Also a good color profile for the FHD screen would be great; I don't have the color sensor ! -
:: Update ::
Just uploaded a calibrated color profile:

hey lyuan did u get ur app crashing problem solved?

It was the driver for my Lenovo USB Port Replicator w/ Digital Video. That driver essentially breaks D3D Hardware Acceleration.
I'm using the factory drivers (188.25) without issue now.
I'm sure most of you guys won't run into this problem - as long as you didn't order the port replicator.
Thanks for asking though

Thanks for the profile. I'll keep hosting it for the foreseeable future.
*edit*
Removed a bunch of red in my screen. Didn't make much change on my Fujitsu Tablet, which has an IPS WXGA. -

Got my w510 a couple weeks ago with the FHD screen, loving it except for a few times (about 4 times so far) that it blued screen of death on me (still trying to figure out why with tech support). I have a 2nd hard drive using the ultrabay adaptor (from Lenovo). But everytime the system wakes up from sleep, I get this message:
Problem Ejecting SSDSA2SH032G1 INTEL
This device is currently in use. Close any programs or windows that might be using the device, and then try again.
Very weird. Anyone experiencing the same issue? I don't think this ultrabay adaptor was made for this machine because it's not a perfect fit. -
Google Earth works now..thank god! Now I have something to pass the time with at work -
when is multitouch shipping for canada!!?!?!?!
Where do i email for a possible compensation?
-
It also once told me I needed to format the drive. Now that was a little alarming! -
FWIW, I did receive confirmation of my SATA Ultrabay HDD caddy being shipped today... man you shoulda seen my face when I thought it was my 510!!! What's weerd to think about is I got my slice batt all the way from China about 10 days after I ordered it... Where's the love, Loveno? -
Speaking of which what is the part number for the battery slice/bump for the w510? I've been looking for it on the canadian site without any success :|
-
1-866-42-THINK is the number in the top right corner of the page... and the slice is part number: 42T4739 its the 27++ model battery
edit: wow that FRU doesn't show up in Canada at all... I have found that even on the US site the W510 isn't well represented in the accessories store. -
-
-
In ThinkPad documentation it says 9-cell.
What is real then? What comes with notebook? -
I called them today regarding Canadian shipping of the multitouch.. there's supposed to be an update tomorrow so calling back in the afternoon
-
Silly, very silly. -
Anyone have any trouble with audio on their machine?
"Something" on mine seems to have eaten my speakers. I have no audio playback anymore, even after restoring from my recovery CDs. Tried the driver/BIOS updates, etc with no luck. -

No 1 HP compares to IBM build lappy
Cons... I have noticed the red ghosting when moving mouse pointer at some parts of my FHD screen anyone can explain? or its just me not being familiar with non IPS screen?
second con: when I dim the screen it flickers like old CRT but only does this when below max screen brightness. to recreate effect please reduce the screen brightness by half and move a pen/pencil quickly from left to right or from top to bottom especially agains white background.
otherwise no more cons.
tyrell out. -

I am not noticing any red ghosting effect, or flickering....It may be because I am using chopsticks instead of a pen / pencil.
Seriously though, no red ghosting, no flickering. -
True. Not being a graphic artist type but rather a developer, I'm much more interested in the 16GB RAM capability.
That being said I popped on Wednesday of this week for a base i7 720QM model with the HD+ screen on eBay for $1,450.00 (pretty good price, I think).
In the interim, I've seen the following three listings pop on eBay today -
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220562916322&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250587470566&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220562916355&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT
The prices for these listings' configs is pricey compared to the same configs on Lenovo.com direct using the Visa discount.
In the end, if I don't see the FHD's direct from Lenovo shipping any sooner than mid-March or worse, mid-April, or I see the prices substantially bumped for that FHD LCD, I'll feel vindicated.
With the 16GB RAM and the Intel X25-M I'm going to pop into it when it shows up next Wednesday it should still be bloody fast.
Somewhere else in this thread, talking about the caddys and their height, I did pop for a 12.7mm height enclosure on eBay as well and will put the original 320GB HD into that and save the base image for a dual-boot in the event I ever experience a hard drive crash on the road. Only happened to me once over the years, but it was painful and couldn't have come at a worse time when it did.
The W500 I've had now for a little over a year with the 8GB DDR3 RAM and twin 500GB, 7K2 RPM drives has been a boon so I'm really looking forward to this new unit.
Cheers, B

Has anyone gotten any kind of legitimate answer regarding the availability of the non-multitouch FHD? I was told a week ago that it was just out of stock and now they are telling me it probably won't become an option again.
-
Depends on time of day, day of week and who you speak to...
I don't think anybody definitively knows, but I myself am not waiting. <shrug>
My HD+ shows up Monday and I plan on being up and running with the SSD swap and RAM bump by the end of the day.

Egads. That's why the rep works on the phone and not in the real world.
It's not the capacity, it's the form factor and that is 2.5".
Besides checking the specs on the tabook, here's an anecdotal reference and another web site I've been following on these W510s. One of the first things he did (like I'm planning on doing Monday) was pop in 16GB of RAM and this specific Intel SSD - http://blogs.technet.com/keithcombs/archive/2010/02/07/lenovo-thinkpad-w510-first-impressions.aspx

1) Are the issues being reported by a few people with the FHD multi-touch random or simple anomalies?
2) If I order one now, with the multi-touch is the delivery delay still as bad as people that ordered in January or will I actually get it in a few weeks? -
no one knows, you may or may not get it soon, quite frankly the shipping experiences are varied and totally subjective, however if the case is that they have a shortage of FHD and multi touch which a rep implied to me that there is, then most likely you will have to wait but no one knows how long.
Some people get outrageous shipping dates and then its shipped in a few days and some arent so lucky.
BTW i ordered a multitouch on Feb 19th -
2. All you can do is go by the shipping estimate in the order. Call if you want to, but the answer will likely be the same.
