MAINLY it runs cooler with high resolution at-least 10c less

Great news, Tyrell! What's your maximum (GPU and CPU) temps now after the driver update? Could you provide a screenshot after playing for an hour?
-
No, it does not need to be redone, or at least should not need to be redone, unless the OEM screws up the update.
Windows activation is handled 2 different ways, the "normal" or retail style where after installation each machine must contact MS to get an activation key. The other method is that the OEM obtains a pre-activation key from MS and stores it in the BIOS. When Windows starts up it looks for the pre-activation key in the BIOS, and if it's not there it looks for the "normal" activation key. This method saves a lot of load on the activation servers, and also allows customers to avoid the annoying step of activating a new computer.
Recently, Lenovo pushed out a BIOS update but forgot to include the pre-activation key, forcing users to fall-back to the retail activation method. -
sorry m8 but,my word is enough here.
I,m not one of those who need to lay paperwork for trivial things.
if of interest you can do all the tests yourself. (and they will be circumstantial. such as using your laptop in north pole or somewhere in (shambala) lol
also was laptop flat on the table, or in your hand. if you have a fever you may add couple of degrees to it aswell, and finally it could be the thermo paste that wasn't applied properly.
so please be my guest and when youll finish it will be W620 with core i9
-
is anyone having trouble with their anitvirus?
I have installed both nod 32 and kaspersky
and my laptop crashes as soon as it loads up windows 7 -
Lol, very funny.
I was asking just to make a rough comparison to my temps, as am tempted to replace the thermal paste even though it can void the warranty. -
oh dear... well its called over reaction to a virus.
you need some balsamic vinegar 1 table spoon in a glass of water mixed with apple juice. (helps I ive tried myself) one in the morning one in the evening.
as for your lappy.
now remove something in safe mode and good to go.
antiviruses dont like to be installed toogether unless its a female AV with Male
such as microsoft security with avast are married, and they have a child on my system, and its name is AD-Aware! ..., I know odd name, but thats what happens!
when you install something from microsoft

Wooo ho
Order shipped 2 weeks earlier. Waiting for the tracking info now, hoping i get the laptop before the weekend. -
I have seen people reporting his W510 fan turns off when closing lid and caused the machine to become very very hot after updated to nVidia driver 197.16.
forums.lenovo.com/t5/W-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/w510-fan-turns-off-when-closing-lid-very-hot/td-p/222717
Anyone has this issue? -
So how does the W510 compare to the new 15" Macbook Pro? How does the Nvidia FX880 stack up against a GeForce GT 330M? Is a 2.66 GHz i7 dual core processor comparable to a 1.6 GHz i7 quad core?
The MBP clearly gets a win on battery life. But as far as I can tell, even decked out, it doesn't match up on specs to the thinkpad. Thoughts? -
I run it most of the time with the lid closed and hooked up to an external monitor and keyboard. It has been running all day and the GPU temp is running about 47 degrees.
-
I think that I saw somewhere that I can enable / disable a screen status how bright display is when I change this using FN + brightness buttons.
Other screen status works on FN + ... except screen brightness. -
when you say compare you have to take multiple things into account
1)are you going to be using apps that can utilize quad cores?
are you willing to take the battery hit for more power?
2) essentially the 330M is better however since it is not a workstation card you cant utilize professional plugins (such as autocad)
3) additionally the new macbook has switchable graphics which will provide the maximum possible battery life
at this point if your even asking if you should get the macbook
then you should just get it
thinkpads (in general and from my experience)are for people who have never had to ask that question.
good luck with your future laptop! -
No issues with fan stopping working.
but I can report 2 driver crashes when I was using ram demanding programs crash happened after resume from sleep and I was converting m2ts files, it crashed then recovered.( I was lazy to cycle it )
otherwise no more issues with the driver runs much better than previous especially with 3d apps.
I agree those who want mac book dont need the USB 3.0 they want laptop to be white and with backlit keyboard and it should be compatible with I-pod (my solution got $ buy both and dont cry)
I once was helping female individual and she didnt know how to burn CD on her macbook after 2 years of ownership. -
April 26th is now the "recovery" date for the FHD monitors.
-
Does that mean the date for new orders, or those with orders and waiting will finally get them shipped? How many people have ordered FHD and are still waiting for them?
-
I'm still waiting, called them just now and they are saying a ship date of May 3rd. I'm living in Canada.
P. -
Ordered FHD mt: 02/19/10
Est. shipping date: 05/18/10
Was told mid-April before but I don't believe anything happening before May.
Ridiculous, I know... -
They told me that is when there will be enough in stock to fill existing orders and take new orders going forward.
-
Same situation - ordered a FHD+multitouch end-February from the Canadian online store, and latest ship date for me is also 3 May. As others have said, the rep explained that they were waiting on a certain vendor for the screen, and they expect the part to be in at the end of the month. After following this thread for the last month and half, I didn't even bother calling until now to check. There seems to be light at the end of the tunnel.
-
How useful is multi-touch? Those of you with it, what do you use it for?

I haven't been able to find a use for it. For whatever reason, my initial order was canceled and reordered by Lenovo. When the W510 finally arrived, it had the multi-touch screen rather than the non-multi FHD I had ordered. Rather than wait another millenium (+/-) for a computer, I decided to shut up and keep it.
Trackpoint and keyboard is still the most efficient and intuitive interface for me. After the fourth time my attempt to brush lint off my screen sent a window flying, and after the 739th time I swore at the fingerprint grease on my screen, I just turned it off. Why would I want anyone touching my screen? -
I hope so. I deploy to Afghanistan in June and would love to order and bring a W510 along with me. I've been waiting for FHD.
-
what brand of SSD came with w510? samsung? any benches>?
-
ok got it today. will boot in the evening and create disks, install SSD and then hopefully I will be impressed.
-
Are those the 330M drivers?
If so, do you have to do anything special to get them installed for the fx880m?
Thanks -
hi all, anyone have the problem of CPU whine?
I searched but rmclock dont work with I7 core and windows 7 -
I thought mine was supposed to be multi-touch, however it appears not to be.
-
My three year old loves it, but other than that its of no use.
Fantastic laptop in almost every other way though. -
Ok I created the system restore disks using the Lenevo system restore.
It created the following disks:
1) Startup
2) final SP
3) final Q
4) Final C
5) 2c
6) 1C
Now I removed the existing 320 Gb drive and put SSD. When i boot using the startup disk and try to restore the OS I get the error saying winloader was not found and windows will not start.
I have not activated windows before creating the disks.
What am i doing wrong. -
Anyone tried overclocking the GPU yet? How about undervolting the CPU to improve battery life?
-
Love my W510 and have had it for a week or so now. One thing I noticed is that it squeals like I'm slaughtering a pig (used to do that in my home country) near the CPU when it runs on battery. Do I have a defective CPU? How can I fix that?
I was actually thinking about swapping the i7-quad to an i5 if that would correct the issue. -
i-core CPU's known to squeal a lot and I honestly doubt you could improve it at this point.
-
You're generalizing too much. Again.
Some Core-i have a hiss problem, just like some C2D, just like some Pentium-M, and probably just like some P4M.
Other components of the board might hiss, too.
If it's the CPU, you might have a chance to reduce it by preventing the CPU to go into the lowest power state (no idea how this works with this 'windows' OS you guys are prolly using). -
There are dozens of similar threads throughout the Forum. The mobile i5s and i7s squeal (not just when on battery). My W510 does it as well as my M17X. If you don't let the CPU throttle when unplugged from the wall, you risk killing the battery prematurely. i7 quads are 45W beasts. That's like a QX9300. You can surely try, but dunno...
-
my w510 doesnt hiss as bad as my old core 2 duo laptops. Those used to hiss when plugged in as well, while this one only does on battery. It is also not as loud of a hiss. The hiss is rather subtle, can only hear it in completely quiet room (while working at night in the bedroom). In my office or in the conference room cannot hear it at all.
-
My w510 consistently hisses when unplugged and completely stops when plugged back in.
Still not as big of a peeve as the creaky panel over the USB ports on the left, just in front of the left speaker. Put any pressure on that piece of plastic and it creaks like bending plastic 100% of the time. -
They still haven't figured out how to prevent the what I like to refer to as a high pitched noise? Oh well, the way I get rid of it is by disabling the CPU power management in the BIOS. I don't really care about battery life, as I don't use my laptops on batteries much. Battery life on the W700 that I used to own, and the W701 that is next for me blows anyway, and I'd rather not listen to that annoying noise.
By the way, what OS are you using? (@not.sure) -
No hissing or squeals here at all. Are you guys using a stethescope to listen???
i7 720
R -
Just because yours (and mine incidentally) don't squeal (yay!)
doesn't mean that its not a very very common problem that Intel should have prevented / be working towards fixing -
Correct me if what I suggest is incorrect:
1. We perceive sound as the compression and rarefaction of air, i.e. air pressure differences, i.e. sound waves
2. This compression and rarefaction of air is cause by objects in motion, i.e. objects vibrating, or some electrical charge (energizing) of the surrounding air
Are people talking about "CPU whine" then talking about the CPU (or some component internal to CPU, such as the die) vibrating, when it's strapped beneath the heat sink, and tightly held within the socket? Or perhaps some electrical charges escaping from the CPU?
I'm trying to picture this, but I don't see it. I can picture motherboard components, such as coils or voltage regulators, vibrating. But the CPU? -
How is the screen quality (Im talking about the Full Definition screen)
-
Well, I guess I am trying to figure out just how loud of a sound we are talking about. I have two such systems with no noise or squealing, and I am normally pretty sensitive to these kind of things.
I have not done a search on this on the internet - is this a feedback issue or has it been nailed down in any way?
R -
aye aye sir those yankees always whine, I mean their cpus
-
This issue goes back at least to the Core 2 Duo, and maybe further. There's plenty of talk about it all over the place, but most threads quickly get polluted by individuals either complaining that their fan or hard drive is "also making this noise", which throws the thread off-topic (because those things also make noise but it's not the noise we're talking about here), or saying that the problem doesn't exist because it doesn't happen to them.
It is indeed coming from the electronics in the system and has nothing to do with: speakers/mic, fans, hard drives, DVD drives, or anything else. When the CPU enters certain throttling states, the electronics make noise. Whether it's the CPU itself or other surrounding electronics is hard to say. Different people will hear different things (and maybe nothing at all) because electronics are manufactured with different tolerances, which means that even devices with the same part number aren't exactly identical. -
Kind of applies to people too.
-
I think it's capacitors, and possibly capacitances in the chips and PCB. If I had to guess, it could be something like (but not exactly) a piezo-electric effect that creates a mechanical component. Certainly nothing is vibrating in a way that you could see or feel.
But I'm not.sure...
ps: I just gave my T61p for warranty repair of some issues, including GPU (or so) whine. I think they said something like 'oh yeah we get that all the time'. Let's see whether they're really going to fix it.. -
I think it's almost certainly voltage regulators. Switching regulators often make sounds like the ones my T61 makes when the CPU is in a certain state.
Switching regulators usually operate on the order of 100kHz. So you only need a resonance at 1/10th that to make a sound that a human can hear. -
Does anyone use their DisplayPort on the W510? I am not sure why they did not go with HDMI... does anyone have any good links about this?
Thanks,
R
