I ordered a ideapad(for my pops) several days ago and it shipped today. Granted it was the model with the T4200, but non the less it shipped today. It's amazing that while sony charges 1000 bucks for a magnesium chassis laptop and 1700 for a carbon fiber one, lenovo over here charges 750(469 with coupon) for a notebook with carbon fiber and magnesium chassis thats actually THINNER("1 inch all around) than my SR(or the vaio Z for that matter). Granted the weight is higher on the y450 then the Z, its on par with the SR...so im impressed. Granted my vaio is more powerful...(and almost 1 year old)

I'm happy to see Y450's are starting to arrive. Congrats zo2u2.
While it will likely be weeks before the discrete builds start shipping, please post thoughts on build, feel, etc as that will be the same for all.

Yea definitely post a review soon. I'm eager to hear about the Y450, particularly the battery life. I ordered the same one you did on the 19th, which is due to ship on the 26th.

I ordered my Y450, also the one under the P7540 model, on the night of the 18th and received it yesterday. Haven't even had the chance to check it out and won't have the chance until Tuesday. Will post a review when I get the chance.

The next day it shipped, it said in process until I checked again midmorning Tuesday, then it said "shipped." I was surprised I got it so soon. I was hoping for a week, not 3 days, but it makes me happy.

Just got a shipping notification on my Y450 order!!! I placed an order for the P7450/105M version on May 12th. I'm ecstatic right now. Can't wait.

Did others who ordered the P7450 option receive shipping confirmation? I'm really pumped because this means I'll receive it before I move in two weeks.

(estimated delivery date was listed at 6/9, though when I ordered it said ships within 8 business days, fyi)

Yep I ordered same model same day and got my shipping confirmation this morning when I woke up. I don't see any tracking info yet. It says it will be available the next morning. I'm crossing my fingers that it comes with a 110m like the tech specs say instead of the 105m.

    They look nice, however
Y450 - is underpowered: no nice CPU, they should at least offer 2.4GHz; I wish it also had better graphics with 512MB memory; plus white keyboard is not appealing.
    Y550, Y650 - have crappy display resolution.
They should also offer anti-glare display on all models.
I hope they'll upgrade them soon.

The Lenovo IdeaPad Y450 - 418939U comes with the Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor P7450 which is by no means a slouch CPU for a 14" Notebook. Also the GT 105M is a decent card and it would depend on what you are looking to play in terms of games.

GHz and Memory Size are far from the end all to performance.

Edit: I forgot to add I do agree that the Y550 and Y650 are terrible. They literally just used a growth ray on the Y450 to create the 5 and 6 series, which explains the crappy resolution and sparse ports.

    Hi Nick,

Thanks for the link to CPU Benchmark, I was actually looking for it!!

I do not do gaming anymore due to workload at grad school but I do programming and math modeling - nothing really graphics intense. When I buy my laptop I am planning to keep it for at least three years and I am just afraid that GPU on Y450 will quickly become outdated. I am not even sure if Vista with Aero will be running smoothly on 256MB GPU memory. I cannot tell I am running XP.

The good feature of NVIDIA G110m is 16 CUDA cores which can be utilized in math computations.

And keyboard on Y650 looks way too small, they probably use the same keyboard for all Y-models.

Every notebook is "outdated" 6 months after its released. If you're referring to its usability, I used a t42p all through college for 5 years with zero problems. I was an engineering student so that included matlab, simulink, solidworks etc...all with a pentium M processor, 1.5 gb of ram, and 128 fire gl t2 gpu.

The only reason I just bought a y450 is b/c I have a job and can afford a new one that can transcode movies much faster. The p7450 contains all the feature of the p8600 and higher its just clocked lower at 2.16 compared to 2.4 or higher. Not gonna be noticeable at all.

As far as the gt100m gpu is concerned, considering I was using all the engineering programs with a 5 year old 128mb gpu, I highly doubt you would have any problems with the 110m running vista aero lol. Its more about the number of shader pipelines and clock speed than amount of memory. In fact, since the 110m only has a 64-bit bus, anymore than 256mb would be worthless and never utilized. You will get MUCH better performance out of 256mb gddr3 memory than you would with a comparable ati graphics card that uses like 1 gig of regular ddr2 memory.

I see what you saying... I am getting convinced : ) I probably do not even need the better graphics. I am using MATLAB like you and also Visual Studio, Sql Server, MS Office, FireFox, watch movies, rip CDs and that's pretty much all intense apps. MATLAB Symbolic Math requires 32-bit Windows, I am planning to install Win7 RC and run MATLAB in XP mode.

You are right, I missed that. The pdf says 110M (that's where I got the data from) but it's 105M on US website.

Could someone who owns Y450 with NVIDIA confirm which graphics card in it.

No, none of the processor options for the y450 support Intel VT. You will need at least a p8400 processor or higher which can be found in y530 and up models. It actually exists in older processors as well but Intel likes to segment their market.

Unless you like to run multiple 64-bit VM's its really not necessary for a consumer notebook.

Thanks smakdown61. I could not find it, P7450 for some reason is not on the Intel's list?!

    http://www.intel.com/products/processor/core2duo/mobile/specifications.htm

I use MATLAB (you said you use it too) and one of it's parts - Symbolic Math requires 32-bit Windows. So I want to install Win7 RC and run MATLAB in XP virtual mode, otherwise I'd have to have a double boot.

You won't have any problem running matlab using vmware. Unfortunately, you have to spend some money for it compared to the built in win7 functionality (unless you are good at google searching...).

I cannot confirm since I do not own one but people have been saying their Y450 came with a 110 and Y550 with a 130.

It probably does have the higher model GFX but it is beyond me why the website would still have this kind of error. Someone must have mentioned it right?

    Hi Everyone,

    I ordered my Y450 on 06/05/09.
    Model 418938U
    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T6400
Intel Graphics; 4 Gig ram; 320 Gig Hdd

On the order status page it says: 418938U IPAD Y450 T5900 14"WLED

Check the processor. I orderd a T6400 (2.0Ghz newer Penryn core) but the order status says T5900 (2.2Ghz older Merom Core). I'm concerned about how much more power/heat the older processor will use (if they've in fact put that one in). Which chip would you guys rather have? The faster one that will use more battery and create more heat or the slower one that is more efficient?

Cratos, disregard that the order shows(t5900) the same happened to me last month (may)showing T5900,i called them & that is what they told me...my order shows t5900 but i received the newer t6400...they are a little behind, when it comes to updating their order-page...also the t6400 is better=consumes less power, 25 watts versus 35 watts=

Firedragon76, I'd say if you are running windows to check in Device Manager.

    howard911s,
The heat compared to my Averatec 3225 is absolutely no comparison. That thing was like a frying pan on your lap. Compared to the T61p it runs cooler by a decent amount. The noise again is no comparison to the 3225. I dont even notice the fan is on.

I am pretty impressed with this laptop so far. I run Kubuntu and it boots up to the login screen in 20 seconds. Everything was recognized automatically (screen resolution, wireless, etc).

The only thing I am unimpressed about is how loud the space bar is! It is so loud that it sounds broken. Does anyone else have this experience? Can anything be done to fix it?

and would like to know the review from direct user here :)

    @cratos
which one;is the Y450 or your Averatec 3225 that heat so hot??

I'm often do some work outside.....and will be taking the laptop a lot.
    will this laptop allright?
(well I prefer the thinkpad, but maybe I can change my target to this series...since my budget couldn't afford a thinkpad  )

I currently own a Y450 as well. It is a good laptop. Like my Vaio Z, it is a good all around notebook. I can use it from games to programs like AutoCAD. Keep in mind though that my Y450 currently has an Nvidia G 110M

The temps I'm getting are pretty good. CPU idles at 37 C. I will get back to you and tell you what it maxes out at. Build quality is fantastic. It is really sturdy and its screen feels far less fragile than that of my Vaio Z due to the added thickness. If you don't game much, temps will most likely be 37-50 C even after prolonged use.

Don't get taken, like I was.

I ordered the Lenovo Y450 (model 418938U). A nice-looking laptop, and seems to work OK for the most part, except that the wrist-rest area gets very hot during usage. I'm not talking about warm, I'm talking hot. It was so uncomfortable I decided to call tech support and report the problem. The tech support guy said "they are all like that". I've never used a laptop that got so hot.

I will also add that when I was going through the personalization features, the Windows Vista explorer would stop responding, and I had to shut it down and restart. This isn't a good sign either, especially since this was supposedly a very powerful machine with the Core 2 Duo processor.

I called the sales department, and they said I would have to pay to ship the unit back + pay a 15% restocking fee (I have to pay because they don't consider the unit to be faulty). All that for the priviledge of trying out their machine for less than 24 hours. So I'm sending it back, and my only hope is to dispute the restocking fee with my credit card.

The rest of you can take your chances, but honestly I will never do business with this company again. Their poorly designed (or faulty) product ended up costing me $100 to try out for a single day. You've been warned.

I believe the hard drive is beneath the wrist rest area on the laptop. A faulty hard drive could have been the issue. Even if it ran hot I would plan on getting a SSD once prices come down.

As far as their customer service and shipping goes, I ordered a Y450 yesterday and my ship date is July 20th.. I might be cancelling that order if I find a better deal by then, which will probably happen at this rate.

I've also heard alot of talk of heat issues on other forums, but laptopmag.com didnt get temperatures over 100F in the cooling vent. But they also had the lower end model which doesnt draw as much power as the 110M GPU.

The cooling fan area was surprisingly cool on mine. When I ordered my Y450, they said there was a 4-week waiting period, but then they shipped it the very next day.

I'm not having any problems with heat anywhere on the machine. The wrist rest keeps nice and cool. I read that if you get the CPU really going that it can get warm, but it's like that on all laptops. This thing is WAY cooler than my Averatec 3225. Maybe you had a process running in the background using your CPU? Who knows what they install on those damn Windows machines. I run linux, so I cant say.

As far as speed, build quality, etc. It's great. I recommend this laptop. Like I said before, the only thing i dont like is that the space bar is very loud. The rest of the keys are quiet, though.
