For some reason the lenovo site where my order status is isn't loading and giving me an error so I'll ask you guys because I'm anxious: Is there a way to change my order to faster shipping after I already ordered it? I ordered it sunday and the ship date says July 21, I'm getting worried I will have to wait a month like other people. is it worth the 25 extra if so?
The 3830TG is staring at me in the face and teasing me with a free xbox and 2 day delivery... but the throttling is like when a cute girl is looking at you and when she smiles she has hideous teeth.

I could only get the $25 shipping to PR... so, I can't really comment

So, I haven't been on the site for awhile as it's gotten a bit too bogged down for me with just a few people working out what (for me anyway) are pretty esoteric problems. Having said that, I'm not much of a gamer or a DIY person when it comes to electronics. For what it's worth, here are a couple of thoughts on recent entries:

    * Yes, you can change anything prior to the ship date. If they give you any hassle at all. Cancel the order completely and replace it. Changing the delivery mode should be dead simple since the computer apparently hasn't even left China yet.
    * I have the I-5 version of the Y470. I’ve been used to corporate Thinkpads and a Dell Lattitude 630 – both built like tanks. I was worried but, I’m completely impressed with the build of my Y470 and (so far) couldn’t be happier. I’ve no problems with bezel looseness on the display or anything else. The biggest problems I have are in adapting to Win7 and Office 2010. I also find the screen resolution to be great but, as I say, I’m not a gamer and I’m only transitioning from pretty dated corporate models. Turns out that I like the glossy screen here much better than my older matte screens.
    * Yes, you will ALWAYS get confusing and contradictory answers from the support departments in any big corporation. The support departments are (typically) completely separated from any useful information such marketing timetables for new products, accurate product availability information and the like. Lacking information, people do what they often do - they give you their best guess based on something they heard from someone else in the department. That's why you get conflicting, incorrect information all of the time. You're speaking to people who are not part of the need-to-know information chain in the view of the company. It’s not their fault - and no it's not a plot to mislead you either.
    * A lot of posts have been about DIY installing an SSD into the Y570. No matter what someone's told you, don't believe that it will be a straightforward, easy add. There was an article on this back in January after the announcement of the Ideapad SSD models at CES (it's on the web embedded within one of the industry reviews of the new models but, you should be able to find it through a Google search). The bottom line is that the innovation by Lenovo wasn't the pairing of the SSD with another hard drive, the innovation was the design of the software which constantly anticipates which program bits to move back and forth from drive to drive based upon the computer’s need for immediate availability. The trick then is to find out if that SSD management software is preloaded onto all of the Ideapads (regardless of whether they have a pre-installed SSD). if it is, you might be in good shape if you install the Lenovo SSD for which the software was tailored. If not - good luck.

@dmdmdmd yes, the software is pre-loaded regardless of the presence of the ssd msata. At least, for mine it was.

That's great to know. Did you add a Lenovo SSD to your machine or some other SSD brand?

Does anyone know if the Y470 has the dedicated slot for an SSD available in the build? I haven't opend the bck yet myself. I would have liked to have been able to order a Y470 SSD at launch but, of course it wasn't available.

So, im thinking about buying the IdeaPad Y570. So i got a few questions:

    1. Does the Switchable graphics work at all? I have the DV6T And they dont work so i am returning it for the ideapad.

    2. How is the performance in source games?

Got my Y570 about 2 weeks ago. Had plenty of time to play with it, and eventually made a few mods... I started by replacing the WD 500Gb drive with a X-25M 80Gb, and did a fresh W7 Pro 64bit install. Then I installed an Intel msata 80Gb SSD in the available slot, and installed my apps (Office, Steam, Adobe CS4) on the msata SSD. Upgraded to 8Gb o' ram too.

Performance-wise, the lappy is great. Even though it's only the i3 flavor, anything I throw at it, it gladly takes. Been playing COD Black Ops, and it runs basically maxed out. Keyboard feel is very different, and I'm still not used to the keys. I would have loved to have a larger Enter key too - I stopped counting the number of times I hit \ instead of Enter...

As for the external, I only have 1 petpeeve. The comm ports are too far forward on either sides. The USB (both sides) and the Ethernet port are simply too close for confort. I would have like to see those at the back, where they belong. 1 USB port is enough on one side, not all of them.

My last concern is the fact that being relatively new, Lenovo does not offer any accessories yet. I can't wait to get my hands on a Port Replicator and have all those cables out back...

I wanted to post this, since I heavily based my decision reading everyone's feedback.

    I personally have the y470 i7 edition.

Optimus works wonders, and you can manually choose what gpu is turned on in the nvidia control panel.

Performance is great. I can play bc2 on medium at around 40 fps, so im pretty sure source games isn't a big deal.

After looking at multiple notebook brands and models, I am considering purchasing the Y570 for the quality associated with the Lenovo brand, and its performance and versatility I have been reading about.

Being the owner of a 4+ year old HP dv9000 series notebook that suffered from a defective Nvidia GeForce Go 7600 GPU and severe heat issues due to a poorly designed heatsink, my main questions in purchasing any notebook since then has been:

    • Heat management
    • Physical placement of the CPU and GPU within the notebook
    • Number/placement of CPU/GPU fans/vents across the notebook
    • Max. tempuratures when running graphically intensive applications and games

I would greatly appreciate it if anyone who currently owns a Y570 could provide some insight in how the notebook fits this criteria.

Well... the Y570 should have a similar or better cooling system compared to the y470... and today I did a couple of benchmarks, and overclocked my GPU from the stock 740mhz to 905mhz and mem from 900 to 1100mhz and the GPU never passed 78C running 3Dmark05 or 06

I have the 470. Wondering - can I go digital audio out somehow? I do not want to use HDMI. Is it possible to do digital out otherwise and if so, how?

Hey - Id like to install 3dvision on this thing - to output to my projector. Seems like everyone has failed anytime doing a gpu driver update. So Im concerned.

Anyone succeed at this? And if so which drivers.

    Thanks

Hey, it seems that my y570 with i5 performs pretty bad comparing to how it must.
I have pretty low fps in games and my 3dmark scores are bad comparing to reviews:
    3dmark 06:

    3DMark Score 9407 3DMarks
    SM2.0 Score 4218
    HDR/SM3.0 Score 3885
    CPU Score 2681

    3dmark 11:

    3DMark Score P801
    Graphics Score 714
    Physics Score 2942
    Combined Score 685

What's wrong with it? How can i fix it?

try and play some games and benchmark that way? It could be that for some reason 3dmark is using the intel instead of the nvidia gpu.

Aren't my results too low for nvidia but too high for intel HD?
I tried crysis at maximum settings (very laggy) and at hight settings (a bit laggy) and Alice: Madness Returns (only 35 fps).

There's definetely something wrong. I can't even run TF2 at max settings sooth enough.

well the GT 555m should only be getting around 45 fps on med and 30ish fps on high for crysis. On maximum detail you should be only getting around 15 - 20 ish fps.

If you're getting around that, you should be fine.

The intel HD that comes with the i7 is actually decent. I could play BC2 on the intel card on med at around 15 fps surprisingly.

The msata addition is quite simple actually. Open the large access panel on the back cover, drop the msata SSD in the PCI-e slot, close the panel and start the lappy. The drive was recognized automatically, no drivers were required.

You will need to find a small screw though, to hold the drive in place. Lenovo does not supply as spare one, nor does Intel. I found a spare one in an old lappy of mine.

Performance is on par with the various SSDs I have / have owned. Makes everything that much more snappy. It ain't a speed demon, but paired with the X25-M is allows for twice the storage space.

    1. Pretty darn good. Basic ops, Core Temps shows ~40c (21C ambiant). Fan ramps up quickly too.
    2. Upper left, in relation to the keyboard.
    3. 1 vent underneath the lappy, one vent on the left aft of the casing.
    4. Running COD Black Ops, CPU max. is ~ 55C, GPU ~65C.

Uh ya, thats not what im getting. Not even close.

I'm getting 45ish on idle, gpu and cpu is anywhere between 75 - 85 C when i game. I don't see how you're getting 65 C max unless you replaced the thermal paste inside and drilled holes into the bottom of your laptop.

    I'm pretty sure a Y570 is not 20 C cooler than a y470.

A benchmark of what exactly? Games like BC2 stresses both GPU and CPU, causing more heat to be generated.

A purely gpu or cpu benchmark won't exactly bring the heat levels up.

Same. I idle around mid 40s, and when I game for a while, it'll hit high 70s.

Oh, and just wondering, in the "Energy Management" program that comes with the y470 (and probably y570), there's the "best Battery Health" option. Is there a way to increase the limit on the charge capacity?

Also, under "Advance power settings" (this time under Windows power management) for the "Super Energy Saver" plan, the max processor state is set to 0%. What does this mean?

Heat management - Decent, my y570 idles at around 40 and will peak at 90 under unusual stress and blocked vents, usually it'll stay around the high 70's when I'm gaming normally. (just read the post before me appears to be about the same temp wise then)
Number/placement of CPU/GPU fans/vents across the notebook - There's a huge grill on the left hand side and two large grids on the bottom.
Max. tempuratures when running graphically intensive applications and games - 90c.

I will note that even with overclocking, while the temps get higher faster, they never exceed. I've only had the laptop hot to the touch once, and with summer weather like it is this is one of the coolest machines I've ever used, most of the time the vent is blowing out cold air. Also, the fan isn't annoyingly loud.

@teslakoil Super Energy Saver is managed by lenovos software, you can modify the settings through lenovo's energy management. Also, I don't think there is any way to increase the charge capacity and doing so would kind of defeat the purpose of it as the batteries life decreases exponentially the higher the percentage it is stored at. I wish there was a way for it to automatically stay at best battery health though because I always have to manually switch it back after unplugging my notebook.

If anyone is experiencing less performancce than they expect from the 555m check to make sure your energy mangement setting is on best performance, & that you have installed the latest compatible Nvidia drivers 275.50 beta.

To the person you could not play tf2 on the highest settings with the 555m, i find that exceedingly worriesome as I can play tf2 maxed (smoothly) with even my integrated graphics on my i5 y570 machine.

    Hello PPL,

I buy a MSI GT780R a some weeks, but I am not happy, not like the keyboard.

I plan change this notebook to get a lenovo ideapad Y570 or Y560p.

I would like to know about the quality of this keyboards, it is good, have flex?

what is the best keyboard, y570 or y560p ?

I work with code, and a bad keyboard to me make my time unproductive.

A very long time I had a Thinkpad 386SX and liked this very much, use it for a long time. how actual Lenovo is ? is the same quality than the era of IBM ?

sorry about my terrible english and Tkz in advance,

    BR

I have a y560p that I ordered from Newegg. I think it has excellent performance (when it works), but I was getting major overheating issues with gpu. It would keep shutting off from minimal use. I'm thinking that the heat sink needs to be reseated, but I didn't want to do that myself since it's still under warranty. So I'm sending it in tomorrow morning.

What I was wondering was....do you guys think I should just ask Newegg and see if they will swap my y560p for a y570? how does the y570 compare to the y560p? I like the fact that the y570 is the 2nd gen, and this way there are hopefully less bugs than the 560p.

How would the y570 compare to the y560p graphics and processing speed wise?

    Thanks for any replies

I ordered a Y470 the other day and while I haven't received it, I was wondering if anyone has successfully swapped out the lcd panel. I've heard that it's possible, and I found some options on page 56 of this thread (yes, I have read through the entire thread), but they were all glossy 1366 x 768 screens. I would consider putting a new display in it myself if I felt that the current display on it wasn't good enough for me. Would something like this work? 14.0-inch LG LP140WD1-TLA1 Laptop LCD Screen 1600x900 LED Glossy - US$87.00 | HooToo.com I would strongly prefer a matte version of it if possible.

Finally installed a mSATA SSD... and my god does it make a difference... with the OEM 5400RPM drive boot time was about 55 secs to a 1:20 secs... now it boots up in 20-30 seconds!

I did a OEM recovery... but I wan't to do a fresh install... although that'll have to wait till I find a copy of Win 7 Home... since all the copies I have are Win 7 Professional.

I'd like to know as well... although the stock screen isn't as bad as I was expecting... but higher resolution would be a plus

Thinking of picking up a Y470 here in Canada.

This is the model i am interested in.

    http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/...r.workflow:Enter?mtm-item=:000000F4:000032CB:

    Just a few questions:

    Are the ports USB 3.0?
Can i use a mSATA Solid State drive with this?
Any issues with overheating and throttling on this model?
I'm currently using a 14" Dell housing a 720QM and this thing gets quite hot, wouldn't mind a cooler notebook.

    1) the 2 ports on the left side are USB 3.0, at least in the US version... don't know if it's different for Canada

    2) Yes... I installed a mSATA SSD on my Y470 and it works perfectly... it's making me consider buying an SSD for my desktop after seeing how fast it boots up

    3) So far no... and I even Overclocked my GPU

    - not all, on my (canadian Y470) model 085534U, only these 2 from the left side
    - personally use a Momentus XT (hybrid SATA HDD) instead the provided one. It's cheaper than PCI-E mSata. Fast boot until now is 18 sec. On regular basis up to 25-30 sec. Clean install.
    - no overheating; no throttling. Amazing piece of hardware.

Only problem that I have is that I can't change the default WiFi card; Lenovo locked via BIOS. Actual card doesn't know 5GHz WiFi.

Well, there isn't any overheating, but it does tend to get hot under gaming. Anywhere between high 70s to mid 80s depending on how well they did your heatsink/thermal paste.

What did you use to overclock it? Is there a solid performance difference? And what overclock settings did you use?

I have no experience with overclocking but when I get my 470 I'll be playing BC2 and it would be nice to play on high settings with good framerates.
    Thanks in advance!

I used MSI Afterburner to OC it... I've yet to play games on it... Mostly I've ran benchmarks testing the PC... The highest I could get the GPU core was up to 905mhz (stock is 740mhz) before it started artifacting running 3Dmark06 and Vantage. I also boosted the memory up 1100 over the stock 900 without artifacts. So I suspect that running 840/1000 would be a good OC for 24/7 use that won't cause much harm to the GPU.

i got it last week, i have only tried crysis 2...i can run advanced with vsync on (which is medium settings in crysis 2) and it's pretty stable..i dont use fraps but it plays pretty smooth...it took 2 weeks to get laptop when i ordered it and it was on sale for $800 with shipping

    (its now $1249. Lenovo - IdeaPad Y470 14.0" laptop)

the laptop stays pretty cool thanks to the fan on the left side..the palm rest has never heated while gaming which is a big plus...i would get the 570 since it's the latest and has a faster gpu but i love this lappy...i love the 470..it looks pretty good and stays cool.

Even though the date listed on the page, as well as the readme, is 2011-07-18, there don't appear to be any changes listed compared to what was shown before. In addition, my Y570 has BIOS version 2.05, whereas the one on Lenovo's page is 2.03. So who knows what this BIOS update does, if anything.

After abusing my wireless card, I've notice it gets extremely hot (been using the usb tether so it's the first time I've used the wifi)

Anyone else notice it getting hot under heavy web surfing?

If the wifi card is located under the touchpad, then yes.

How reliable is the Momentus XT? I've heard the drive has random hangs. Also, read/write speeds?
