I received a 48whr battery as well... still good for 4 hours though.

As for the power plug... mines pretty tight...

Just ran a test with the i7 y470 against my work computer (A dual quad-core intel xeon, meaning 8 2.26ghz cores).

Ran a test converting the same video file (using Handbrake), and the y470 schooled the mac desktop, ~220fps to ~180... Must be some crazy optimization going on at the instruction level on the i7 compared to the older xeon, because i can't find any other way in which the laptop should perform better. Unless handbrake takes advantage of some sort of graphics-card based converter, which I didn't think it did, figured it was entirely CPU-bound.

Also, for those asking, I ordered my y470 on 7/20, it shipped on 7/26, and it came with the 62Wh battery. On energy star mode, I can get about 6 or 7 hours of web browsing out of it.

I have the 62Wh battery. Maybe only i7 laptops get them?

That is an interesting thought. Perhaps more people will chime in on the subject.
    I have the i5 Y470 and it came with a 48Wh battery.

Went back to the store, all the laptops have that poor resolution and thin vertical lines between horizontal pixels. I returned the laptop and got me a Sony with the same CPU with a 1920x1080 screen. But not as good GPU (540M) but no Nvidia Optimus, so I won't have to worry about incompatible games (like Super Meat Boy).

Also, is there a list of recommend SSD's or one that you guys are using that works well? I would like to get a 120GB ish SSD for around $200-300 on amazon, so let me know what you guys are using. Thanks.

I use an OCZ Agility 2 SSD 120GB. It's gotten really good reviews...but that was when it came out, so it might be out of date now. You can get it for about $160 now. I get about 8-10 second boot times.

    Well, let's compare.

I'm giving technical information for other people to use when deciding whether or not to purchase this laptop.

    You're being a d*****bag.

    Yep, so much better.

Ok, so I need a mSATA SSD? Or does the mSATA go into the "rapid drive" slot? I was going to remove the hard drive, put the SSD in its spot, and only use the SSD. I can do that right? Does the Y470 come with recovery disk or do I need to copy and burn that off the original hard drive? Thanks again for the help.

You can either opt for mSATA which goes into the rapid drive slot or a Regular SSD replacing the HDD slot.

mSATA will offer speed and storage but performance is not as good as regular SSD.

Y470 does not come with recovery disc but it has a recovery software preinstalled. Upon receiving the lappy, you can make recovery discs on your own using the software. A total of 3 DVD discs is required thou some users reported 2 discs

Mine doesn't have the thin vertical lines you describe, also, Super meat boy is easily made compatible by going to the Nvidia control panel and forcing it to use the Nvidia GPU

    Hey guys,

I am looking to get a laptop for my photography post processing purposes. I am considering something between the Lenovo Ideapad y470 and HP Envy 14 series. I have a few questions regarding Lenovo Idepad y470.

    1) With the quad core i7, do we still get the switchable graphics or is it only for i5?
    2) Can we install a additional SSD on y470 as well or is it only for its elder sibling y570
    3) This is the first time I am moving out a HP family, wondering how reliable are these Lenovos, i would be looking it to keep it for atleast 3 years.

    Appreciate your time.

    Thanks

Anybody can post results from overclocking the 550M chip? Can it hit the 555M? Also be nice to know if it overheats or throttles during overclock.

So I went back to complete reading the remaining posts in this thread and I saw folks confirming that switchable graphics is indeed available with i7 as well and the SSD is installable on the y470 too.

So what remains for me is how is lenovo ideapads overall and since i have been reading a lot, i was wondering if there are any graphic designers or photographers in here who have been using the y470 who could tell me about the screen. Is it problematic, if yes is it a deal breaker?

    Thanks for your time again!

    Thanks

Well, i just got my Lenovo Y570 today after already going through trouble. I ordered it before it went away for a week and asked them to delay the shipping until after I got back. Well, it shipped the day after I ordered it apparentely, so while i was away, i had to call UPS to change it to Will Call.

I just got back from UPS and turned on my y570, and guess what.... It's the wrong configuration. I ordered the i7, 8 gb ram, 500 gb HDD. What I got was a i5, 4 gb ram, 500 gb hdd. Oh the joys of ordering from them. Time to call them and complain to get the one I ordered.

Anyone else install the nvidia 280 drivers? I noticed I now get ~20 FPS with the witcher 2 with Fraps on. Before I was getting ~10. Still not where i'd like to be though.

I recieved my Y570 on Thursday of last week. I have never been more dissapointed, this is a very expensive paper weight. I have bios v 2.06.

    i7 2630QM
    8GB RAM
    500GB 7200 HDD
    Geforce GT 555M 1GB

...and it won't even play Minecraft... !?!?

I have the switchable graphics on via hardware physical switch and software. The PC starts out playing and then about 5 minutes later I get visual artifacts and up to a hard freeze that I have to do a hard reboot on to get it back. This issue is repeatable and even happens with web browsing sites with flash content.

The only option Lenovo is giving me is to mail mine back for them to fix it all the while I'm out a pc?!? I just waited so long and just got this thing to find out I need to ship it back already? I should have gotten an HP dv6t instead ...

The Y470 has about 6 different panels. Not every Ideapad has the same display manufacturer. Some panels are notoriously bad. You can check the first 2 or 3 pages and see what people are saying. If there was a Y470 in the store, I would have gotten it, but they didn't. I figured the store I buy from (Microcenter NJ) got a shipment with that poor LCD screen. I compared it to another Acer and the XPS 15 and the screen was much better on the other ones.

As for Super Meat Boy, it doesn't support Nvidia Optimus. Manually setting the profile doesn't work. Even setting steam.exe to High Profile won't make it work. It's how Super Meat Boy was coded. If you want to check, put it in windowed mode and you'll see the Nvidia tray never says it's running. A couple of other games have this issue where you can't force it. (Punkbuster has the same problem). Everything will render on the Intel GPU.

Nice, seems like it does work. I'll be honest, it didn't work on my older Asus with Optimus a few months ago and I spent about a week or two trying to get it work and gave up.

On the Y570, I set the override for C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\super meat boy\SuperMeatBoy.exe and played it on fullscreen and had framerate issues. I didn't check the task tray this time, but assumed the issue with the Optimus was still there.

How did you set it up, and if possible, what driver version are you running?

the 280 beta driver from nvidia.

I just went to the nvidia control panel, manage 3d settings, program settings tab, added the executable to the lest and then set preffered graphics to high performance nvidia and it worked

I'm currently installing Portal 2 and left 4 dead to see how well they run on the laptop though, so far the only game on my laptop is super meat boy.

I see. Left 4 Dead 2 runs really well. I'm not sure what my FPS are but it has to be high. However, I cant seem to run it with high textures or it crashes. That might just be because of my copy though.

If you do a HDD replacement, You'll be needing a 2.5" SSD.

If you wanna get a 1.8", you'll need a converter and a special caddy for it.

    1) I am having the quad core i7 variant and yes, it does have the switchable graphics with Optimus
    2) You can install additional mSATA SSD without having to remove the original HDD. If you choose to install a regular SSD, you'll have remove your original HDD.
    3) based on my experience with HP and Lenovo. I strongly believe Lenovo can last longer than HP. Get a warranty extension upgrade to 3 years for peace of mind.

So am I the only one who cannot run Windows Experience Index on my new Y570? Anyone know of a way to get warranty work done ASAP? My laptop is 3 days old and apparently has a failing GPU. I'm not looking to be without a PC for weeks on end just to end up with the same problem. Any help would be great!

Hello, I just purchased a Y570 however and am excited to receive it! I ordered it from the Canadian site, but saw no option to add USB 3.0 to the laptop, nor have I seen mention that it includes it. Upon reading websites that reviewed the laptop, or one similar, they listed USB 3.0 as being an optional upgrade. Can anyone tell me if the laptops come with USB 3.0 support. Thanks! Ive read all 110 pages (or so) of this forum and cant find a definitive answer.

I bought the y570 just over a week ago from the Canadian site. I wasn't sure about this either and I contacted Lenovo. I have yet to receive the laptop but they informed me that two of the USB slots will be USB 3.0. It is standard and is NOT an optional upgrade.

God is their support terrible. I just can't smoothly get them to let me send in the laptop i got and get the one i ordered in return.

The first time i called(yesterday), the guy told me i had to talk to the rep who sold it to me. He put me through to her extension, she was busy on a call, i left her a message. She never called back.

Today, i called again, but the general post-purchase number again. The lady(not the one who sold me the laptop) told me she would send me a test email, and then I would reply with the two pics of the serial number on the box and on the laptop(b/c they weren't matching. I apparently got the right serial number on the box, but not on the laptop. So, they put the wrong laptop in my box somehow). She sends the email. It never comes for me. We already hung up. So, i call back the general number, and somehow get the same lady out of luck. I give her a different email address and it gets to me. She then provides a misspelled email address in the body of the email, so i just use the one that she sent me the email with(Which was basically the one in body of the email, but her name was spelled wrong in the body of the email.). Whenever I try sending the email with the pics attached, it fails, every time. I try the correct email and the one that she provided in the body of the email, neither go through. I then try uploading the pics to Tinypic and just put the links in the email. It goes through finally. Now it's been 6 hours and no response.

Such a simple thing to solve is becoming a burden. This is getting frustrating.

Ordered y570 yesterday. Says it's going to ship on 16th. Can't wait. Btw, without looking through 109 pages, did the new drivers more-or-less fixed the problem with Optimus ? I'm looking mainly at games running through steam ( I've heard they were the one that got the most trouble from original drivers)

Just placed my order for the Y470 i5. Can't wait to get it, it seems too good to be true. $726 for an i5 and a GT550m. Closest I saw was a Asus on newegg for $899. I'm glad I stumbled across it in my search, there seems to be quite a following.

Never had a problem with Optimus. Just set it so that it automatically uses the Nvidia chip whenenver it is flicked, rather than having it turn on optimus.

I got the same one as you, and I'm really happy with it so far. I've had no problems at all. Battery life is good, gaming is great, it doesn't overheat at all, and it doesn't make a whole lot of noise. Also, the speakers are really good.

It says that you get one within 24 hours I'm pretty sure.

I'm having the exact same issue with artifacts on my Y470. However, I believe I know why it happens on my Y470. There is a certain angle that I can adjust the lid where I encounter no graphical artifacts at all. The LVDS cable that connects to the LCD runs along the motherboard on the opposite side of the GPU. It's stuck with adhesive onto a metal bracket. In my case, the adhesive has given way and the cable is moving, and possibly causing interference.

Ok, I hope this is my last SSD question, does the Y470 support SATA 3? I think I'm going to get a 2.5" SSD in the 250-256GB rage and not sure if I need SATA 2 or 3? Also are there any SSD's known that don't play well with our laptops? Thanks again!

I personally would get a 64GB mSATA PCIe SSD and pair it with your spinning HDD. Best of both worlds, boot time and storage space. This is what I plan to do once I receive my replacement Y570.

The drive I plan to get:
MyDigitalSSD 64GB 50mm Bulletproof mSATA SSD | My Digital Discount

Anyone have experience with warranty work? I want to know how long to wait to receive a new PC, hopefully not longer than shipping it from China in the first place.
