So would you guys recommend the y570/470 over xps 15 even though the xps 15 has a superior screen?
-
If you are focused on a good screen w/ a 9 cell battery for higher battery life, then the XPS is better for you. However, if you tend to play more games, the y470/570 would suit you better. The 1366 x 768 is much better on the 14 inch than a 15 inch, but it is up to preference.
Also, any y470 owners experience any loud continuous fan noise from the laptop, even with a small load? -
I have a "textured" problem too. I believe it's a manufacturing problem. I'm going to go back to the store and see if the display model looks like this. It's starting to really bug me. Everything look gridlike to me. It's as if I'm looking at things through a 10 year old LCD screen.
If all the displays are like this, I'm returning it (just got it today) -
nope.. but you can set it to silent
-
Thanks
Last question
Exactly how bad is the screen quality
And also how is the build quality -
why don't you read through this thread and find out?
-
where can i get the best deal on the y570 i5 with minimum configurations.live in in NY
-
Great stuff man. I appreciate the walkthrough!
-
agreed
not trying to offend some of you who have questions, but this thread has answers to many of your questions. Just go back and read through some of it
Yes it's a big thread but you'll actually find a lot of useful info.
The only question i had was about the weight of my package and nobody brought that up. I just did not realize that it is done in "KG" and not Lbs.
So please guys, try not to clutter up the thread with questions that have been answered. Look through the thread and if you see that your question(s) was not already brought up then you can ask -
Additionally, this computer is pretty light, considering what it contains.
Some regular bloatware on it but nothing out of the ordinary. I played Rome:Total War on it and it ran just fine.
What i am noticing though is that the right side of the laptop gets a bit warm even under a light load. I'll have to observe that more as the days go by
I havn't ran into the headphone static thing yet, but i wouldn't hold my breath.
All of my buttons seems to work and i also decided not to update the drivers at the moment and left everything stock for some testing. -
My touch pad area gets warm after a couple hours excel/web browsing use. This didn't occur with my hp dv6 unless I played games on it.
-
Build quality seems good, but this has to be the absolute worst LCD screen I've ever used (and I've worked fixing desktops/laptops for 15 years).
It's definitely going back. It's a real shame. Spec wise, it's great, but the pixeling makes this completely terrible if you try to use for anything other fast motion display (video/gaming). Would be great if all I used it for was movies and gaming but I would like to use it to browse the web as well, digital editing, coding, etc where the display is usually static. -
To all prospective buyers, I think this comment is grossly blown out of proportion. The screen is fine. The quality is average, no better, no worse. Do I think the screen could be better? Yes. Do I think it is bad? No.
-
Thanks for that. It got me worried, just ordered mine yesterday =/
-
Still doesn't work, it makes a quieter sound by still noticeable.
-
I agree, display is average. Not particularly bad...but any lower of a resolution on this size display would be unacceptable.
-
Has anyone yet successfully swapped out/upgraded their screen?
-
Nobody has done this yet as far as I know. I too would love a higher resolution/better quality screen, and I don't even have my y470 yet. I do plan on opening it up when I get it to find out once and for all if the screen can in fact be upgraded.
I will post my findings in the screen upgrade discussion here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/ideapad-essential/597572-y470-screen-upgrade.html -
Thank you. That would be very helpful.
-
Quick question for the y470/570 owners out there.
How do you find the fan noise level when gaming? And is the fan silent when doing regular tasks like word processing and web surfing?
I'm looking into the y470 right now, but have never owned a Lenovo before.
Thanks! -
Really??? - worst LCD used since 1996? That hardly seems credible. You happened to get a lemon, it happens sometimes in life. Use it to get yourself a free exchange and a nice discount for the hassle. It's all in how you sell it. Your welcome!
-
exactly
That guy definitely over exaggerated about the screen. It is not bad whatsoever.
It's not a all world screen but it's not a cheap screen either.
I mean, i'd gladly trade the speakers for a nice screen but it's not that serious of an issue honestly. Especially when you consider what you get with the Y Series notebooks.
Just can't please everyone. And if people really what the "whole shabang" then you better cough up the money. Otherwise don't try to be stingy with your money and then expect nothing but the best -
any ideas when the new drivers are gonna come out?
-
Exagerating much... It's not comparable to my 1080P Desktop LCD... but it's nowhere near as bas as you say...
-
There's nothing wrong with the screen, give me a break. The only problem my y470 has is the headphone static, that's it. Take it or leave it.
-
I have a client with a couple of old Dell 15" LCDs. Probably manufacutered 1997. When I said worst LCD, i mean the worst "out-of-box". I'm not saying an LCD that's been faded for ten years looks better.
With this laptop, I can literally count pixels from 15" away. That's something I can't do on old LCDs. It might be defective though. Every column of pixels on the screen has a noticeable black line on left/right edge. There are no visible horizontal lines though. The subpixeling probably has a problem. I just came off using a cheaper Asus 15.6" laptop and the screen didn't have this issue (same resolution).
As, I said before, if you work in any type of design, the issue will become more apparent. I've done web design before and can tell you, all the textboxes I see now (especially the "Search site" box on this page) look like they a 1px vertical lined texture.
I'm hoping it's a screen defect. Something not be right no this screen since the Asus I just came off from didn't have an issue and this laptop uses an LG monitor. I've never had anything but praise for LG LCD displays, so let's hope swapping it out will work.
Edit, did some research:
http://www.techmind.org/lcd/phasexplan.html
Seems like the clock/pitch is incorrect on my screen. -
Has anyone ever opened the back of a Y470?
-
So, it was defective after all? I'm thinking about pulling the trigger on a Y470 for college myself.
-
Definitely defective, I have a Y570 and this is certainly not true for mine.
-
For those interested, I ran Crystaldisk mark on the 5400RPM 750GB HDD that came with my Y470 and made a run on the mSATA SSD.
Here are the results

If your time permits could you please confirm leoaj's SSD install procedure as denoted below? Any other comments, tips, steps or methodology you may have employed? Thanks for considering.
leoaj wrote:
b) running it off of a ssd. And yes the installation is straight forward:
1) make recovery dvds with one key restore (choose if you want factory build, or current build, forget 3rd option)
2) Turn comp off, remove hard drive, add ssd and screw it in (mine didn't come with a screw but a tiny one from my old laptop fit)
3) Turn computer back on with recovery dvd in and let it work its magic.
4) Set bios run priority to the ssd, then turn computer off again and put hard drive back in.
5) Then if you want to wipe the hard drive for maximum space you can do it by right clicking computer and hitting 'manage.' -
Nothing to add since that's the guide I gave leoaj so he could install the SSD.
-
To be honest I don't even think you need to do that much. Just install the mSATA in the small front panel. When the laptop boots sets the bios to boot off your DVD drive and use a Windows 7 DVD to install (if you have one... a burned copy will do). Setup Windows 7 on the mSATA and set it as the boot drive in the bios. Done (ie: no need to remove the HDD at all).
If you want to clear the HDD off, you will need to remove the partitions in Computer Management before you format. I wouldn't install the Rapid Drive drivers when you are drivering up your install. -
The problem is that if the SSD isn't formatted it won't let you choose it with the one key restore... hence why I had to remove the HDD in order for it to let me install windows on the SSD
-
That's the difference. I just used a W7 disk to do a fresh install.
-
Even if it's not a screen defect, the y470 is a smaller screen with a tighter dot pitch. I wouldn't worry.
It's not the a phase/clock problem, since that's analog. I haven't had the chance to go the store to check it out, but I realized it's not every pixel, but every 2-3 horizontal pixels.
Does everyone here have a 2.05 bios? The latest on Lenovo's site is 2.03 but my laptop is running 2.05 -
I, strangely, have a v 2.06 BIOS.
Weird stuff. -
2.06 is the latest
You can find it here:

Edit: Flashed it on my Y570.
No problems

Got my y470 yesterday, and so far it is working great! I'll write more about it once I'm home.
Also, just so everyone knows, I don't think that the screen is as bad as everyone says it is. It seems perfectly fine to me. Also, if you play Minecraft, you will get up to 100FPS on far and fancy settings. I haven't updated my drivers though. -
Almost 6 weeks later, I finally got the laptop in yesterday! Its awesome!
-
So, I ordered the Y470, and it said the estimated ship date was August 12th when I selected the item. At the order confirmation screen, it jumped to August 17th!
Now at the order status URL, it says Estimated ship is August 18th!
Is that really the estimated SHIP date, or is it the delivery date? I need it before I go to school on August 19th. I suppose I could just change it to my school address if it really means the former... -
Unfortunately, usually when Lenovo posts estimated ship dates, expect it to be pushed back a week or two.
You probably should change it to the school address, or call Lenovo support. -
It really fluctuates a lot... some people get it earlier... some later... mine arrived @ my house about 1 week earlier than the estimated ship date...

im coming to usa at the end of summer, ant have y470 on my target. is there a place where i could buy y470 with 2620m instead of 2630qm? i dont need a quad, and official pdf of y470 at lenovo.com shows that 2620m will be available. thanks
-
Received my Y470 with the exterior packing slip torn off and the shipping box cut open in a rather large rectangle - revealing the serial number, etc. and related device born on data; as displayed by the actual Lenovo box contained inside. Assuming this was performed by customs in order to verify contents. Anybody else receive their shipment in a similar fashion? Thanks.
-
I'm pretty certain that mine got delivered the same way.
And for anybody who wants some info on the Y470, here is some.
I've used my Y470 for about 2 days, and so far I have pretty much no problems with it. The only thing that I can think of is that some music (like music from Grooveshark) kind of sounds bad with headphones on. But, I'm sure there's probably something I can do to fix that. Otherwise, the sound is awesome. The speakers sound really good, and I was surprised at how good they sounded.
As far as gaming goes, this definitely does it well. After updating my graphics card drivers, I get around 90-115FPS on Minecraft on Far and Fancy. Pretty good. Also, I can play Team Fortress 2 with high settings, and it runs fine. I'm very satisfied with the gaming on this laptop.
The computer design itself is really nice, I especially like the heat sink on the side and the lid of the laptop. The screen isn't as bad as people say it is. I think it looks perfectly fine. However, I would suggest leaving your screen setting on Movie at all times. When using the Normal option, all the colors look kind of washed out and grey. But, the Movie option looks great. Also, the laptop hasn't overheated, even when playing Team Fortress 2. The only part that is warm is the warm air coming out of the vent on the side of the computer. But, that is obviously a good thing, not bad.
Last, the keyboard is really good. It is comfortable to type on, and I haven't really made a whole lot of typos, even though I'm still getting used to the keyboard.
Hopefully this helps anybody with their decision. -
Just ordered mine today! Went for the full spec quad core blue ray etc. Looking forward to trying it out!
-
I also ordered mine today, and used the above coupon (thanks to who posted it) and got the decked out model. I do have a question though, is there a 9 cell or a bigger battery that we can get for this? Thank you.
-
Sadly, no... if it ever becomes available... I'd be one of the first to buy it.
-
Well, I finally got my Y470 today and so far I haven't had any major issues. The screen is fine, for those who are worried about a few reports of a bad screen. I did, however, run into a couple points I'd like to discuss:
1. The part of the power adapter that plugs into the computer fits kinda loose. It wobbles around and I'm not sure how well it will hold up over time. Does anyone else have this issue?
2. The battery it came with is only 48 wh. I've heard that many people get the higher capacity 62 wh battery, even though both are listed in the manual that came with the machine. Is there any way I can get a 62 wh battery for the Y470 from a reputable source? Lenovo does not list a replacement battery for this computer on its website.
