I've been playing NBA 2k11 on my y470 2630 gt550m and it was fine till yesterday. Since then it's shut down thrice on me. It also has bluescreened me twice.

I installed the new NVIDIA drivers yesterday, could it be that?

Might as well try going back to the drivers you had previously to see if that is the problem. I haven't had problems with the latest NVIDIA drivers though.

I also play 2k11. Runs great with the latest drivers.

But then again, every system's different. Regress back to the old driver and see if that helps.

I got blue screens after installing microsoft updates, so you never know.

Rollback didn't do anything. Just reinstalled drivers. Let's see if it works.

Double-click on the Synaptics Pointing Device tray icon and then click on the "Device Settings" tab. Then go to Pointing -> Sensitivity and Palm Check should be inside the sensitivity list.

    Hi, guys.

I live in Russia and recently purchased a laptop Lenovo y570 (i7, 4gb ddr3, hdd 750gb + ssd 32gb, dvd-rw, nvidia gt555 \ intel hd graphics). It is top configuration in the country.
In my laptop have a nvidia gt555 gf108 chip with ddr5 and 96 uniprocessors.

In the first month of sales (april), my friend ordered a laptop(limited edition) from the U.S., a top configuration i7, 8gb ddr3, hdd 750gb +64 ssd, blueray, nvidia gt555 \ intel hd graphics. In its configuration - gf106 with ddr3 and 144-universal processors.

What the hell? Why in US y570 have gf106 chip but in our country gf108?

Can anyone confirm that the laptops in the U.S. really have gf106? Or this chip is only in the limited editions?

    PS
sorry for my bad english if i was made mistakes ;)

I assumed Lenovo would use the same graphics cards in all of their Y570 setups, the gf108 version. I ordered mine directly from Lenovo's website (086226U, I'm in the U.S.) and it has the gf108 card.

Can somebody please explain to me why Lenovo went with such a low resolution in their Y570s? The laptop has absolutely everything that I want, except a good quality screen.

I really don't want to buy an HP right now since their PC business is in question. But, there really aren't that many good choices out there.

Well, my y570 will be arriving to me on Monday. I'm still pretty angry about HP and their "student academy" program, that prevented me from buying the dv6tqe with the discount coupon. Anyway can someone tell me how much faster is 6770 over the Lenovo's so-called 555m, which seems to be a pimped 540m?

I have no idea myself, from Googling reviews before purchasing this laptop, other forums predicted it was to prevent competition in between their own different laptops. People discussing the small resolutions on 15" screens also mentioned that it's because the average person doesn't care (they also threw in their own hate of the 16:9 madness going on). It's always a business decision, but Lenovo (from what I gathered) has always used that resolution for that size screen.

Notebookcheck finally updated their description of the 555m:
While depressing to see, it's still not a bad card. NBC has varying benchmarks that all vary in how much slower a 555M is in comparison. Using the 3DMark 11 benchmark, the 550M is 17% slower while the superior 555M is 11% slower than the 6770M. So I would guess the inferior 555M would be 15% slower on average? IMO it's hard to gauge these percentages into actual gameplay differences, especially when one's NVIDIA and the other is AMD, since now their different drivers factor into it too for specific games.

I got my Lenovo Ideapad y570 in the mail yesterday. I am in Canada and bought the i5 model on the Canadian webpage (i5, 6gb ram, 555m, etc). From time of purchase until arrival it was 19 days total, so it took quite a while.

So far I'm very happy with it. The screen is actually surprising. I was expecting worse and it doesn't really bother me at all. The performance is quite good from the limited gaming that I have done so far. All of the strange problems that others have experienced in this thread I have not experienced, including the buzz in headphones. Optimus seems to work very well. The machine feels sturdy and the speakers are quite good. I'll report back with fps for different games when I have had time to do more tests.

Also, for those in Canada and elsewhere that are wondering, there is room for a SSD and the laptop is "enhanced experience" even though I found the Canadian website to be a bit ambiguous on that point.

I did some gaming on my y570 and i found that it performs really well. I have not determined the exact fps but the games i have run are crysis 2, nfs shift 2, mirrors edge, operation flashpoint red river, ghost recon advanced war fighter 2. Crysis i am able to run on advanced without any lag. All the rest i am able to run on medium - high settings without any lag.

My strange crash/lockup has returned unexpectedly.

Windows Event Log classifies it as:
    Source: ACPI
    Event ID: 13

: The embedded controller (EC) did not respond within the specified timeout period. This may indicate that there is an error in the EC hardware or firmware or that the BIOS is accessing the EC incorrectly. You should check with your computer manufacturer for an upgraded BIOS. In some situations, this error may cause the computer to function incorrectly.

So I'm having the same troubles with the new BIOS as the early adopters are in China... Well at least now I know. I have also been getting random Kernel Power events in my log near the times of lockup...

On another note my USB mouse stopped being recognized randomly, if I use a different brand of mouse it works. The last mouse was not being touched when it died. I think there was a power surge over USB that killed it when the ACPI froze. A mouse should not stop working on a crash and never work again. As I said I was not even using the mouse on the crash and was just watching a very long YouTube video on my TV from the other side of the room.

I'm now researching the issue starting at this point:
    http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaPad...er-in-Energy-Management-Installer/td-p/452747
    and here:
    http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-3000-and-Value-line/Event-13-ACPI/td-p/211266
Going to remove Lenovo Energy Mangement to see if it fixes the problem, I will update the thread after some more long YouTube video watching sessions.

Is $80 the best deal for them?

I can't seem to find them for any cheaper in Canada. I'm willing to go over my $50 mark by a bit like but $80 is a bit too much for my liking.

I have been reading through the forums and am getting pretty different times on battery life for the y470.

    some say 4 hours

    some say 6 hours

Can I get an answer from someone who has tested it with light web browsing/ occasional youtube video + screen dimmed?

Depends on which battery you receive... People who've ordered the i5 model, like me, received the 48wHr battery... which is good for about 3 and a half hours of heavy youtube usage... the i7 model has been reported to receive the larger 62wHr battery which lasts more than 4 hours...

I received a 62Wh battery (expected and big reason why I chose the Y570) on a Y570 i3-2310M version ordered directly from Lenovo. I noticed some the Y470/Y570 sold on NewEgg/Amazon..etc get the 48Wh battery.

Under typical usage scenarios, I get 6 hours minus 55 minutes for the 15% minimum I set because I do not like having the battery too depleted (bad for battery life).

Brightness at 60%, CPU low, WiFi low, NVDIA Optimus off by switch (one of the main reasons why I chose the Y570), Intel graphics low (automatic brightness off) and everything else set to custom minimum power scheme.

I know Optimus works just fine when on battery but I do prefer the manual switch that older AMD/ATI laptops had built into their drivers thus the manual switch on the Y470/Y570 works just the same except you have to take a second to switch on off when you do or do not want Optimus to be on/off.

There's not one other manufacturer that I know of that has this option with a NVIDIA Optimus 500 series GPU as stated above because Optimus works just fine however having such a switch gives the user more customization over NVIDIA Optimus Technolgy and power schemes for the laptops GPU/IGP (NVIDIA/Intel).

For example: You can set any program to only use the NVIDIA GPU thought NVIDIA driver but when on battery you can switch off Optimus manually thus only using the Intel GPU regardless of what is set in the NVIDIA control panel, on other laptops this would result in the NVIDIA GPU being used even on battery when that specific program is loaded.

You could go to slickdeals and set up a deal alert for them. Sometimes you can catch them for $60 shipped with a coupon. Are earbuds a must? Because if not, I ordered the Sennheiser HD428 DJ Stereo Headphones refurb from ebay for about $30 and they are AWESOME. Look and sound great.

Ugh... This is so frustrating. I removed the Energy Management software and I still get the lockup...

I'm going to wait until the next BIOS comes out, hopefully it fixes my issues. I don't want to mail the laptop back just to get another one 3 weeks from now with the wrong configuration, plus I have already purchased a fresh copy of Windows 7 and registered it to this PC and don't want to deal with Microsoft when I try and register another copy of Windows, they always assume your a thief.

Am I really the only one experiencing this lockup?

It just happened a minute ago on Portal 2 and it only seems to happen when I have devices plugged into the USB 3.0 jacks... I have narrowed it down to that much.

I ran it solid all weekend with no issues, then today it happens again out of the blue. ?!?

It's been about a week since I've had mine and just today I noticed the static noise in my headphones. I tried uninstalling the OEM Realtek (which I first noticed the static with) and installing the latest Realteak HD driver (2.64) but I still hear the noise. What can I do to fix it? Is this a hardware issue or software? Strange thing is I tried it on two other headphones and it did it on one but not the other. Luckily, I bought it from Costco (90 day return policy) so I wouldn't look back on returning it if it turns out to be a hardware problem.

best we've gotten. wait for the 90 days. if lenovo still hasn't put out a fix with a new bios or drivers, then take it back. its def. a hardware issue we've all (except for a fortunate few) have.

Do you hear a humming noise, too? Yeah, I guess i'll have to wait. But i won't wait till the end of the 90 days. I'll probably be paying Costco.com daily visits to see what other deals they have and i'll also visit the warehouses tomorrow to see what they have.

If it's a hardware issue, though, how do you suppose they will be able to fix it with software updates whether it be via BIOS or drivers?

You must change your internal wifi card (Centrino 1000) with a better one (with 5GHz) - Intel Centrino advanced-N 6205 WLAN 802.11a/b/g/n card 2x2 AGN. This card should be compatible with the new BIOS. Also be aware regarding part number; it will be more safe if you'll buy it from Lenovo as a spare part. Or...change your router to 2.4GHz band... :D

Yes, I also hear the humming noise. Regarding this, perhaps I misspoke. Defining the problem as a 'hardware issue' may lead to unwarranted conclusions. Its entirely possible that its problems caused by the bios and drivers as opposed to the hardware itself. Further thinking about how the recommended fix alleviated the static made me revise my earlier comment.

Continue to look for deals at Costco.

Hi, can anyone with a CANADIAN model take a picture of their keyboard for me? Y470 preferred but either is fine. I read a complaint about the multilingual keyboard layout being horrible for this with a puny left shift key and want to see if I can deal with it myself before ordering. Thanks in advance.

Just got my y470, my uncle ordered the i7 version and i got the i5. However, when place side by side my screen seems to be very washout in comparison to his screen; which was more crisp and clear. Anyone notice the washout screen on these machines? Which manufactures do you guys have?

There is an option to adjust how the screen looks on one of the five buttons on the top right next to the speaker. Set it to 'movie' instead of 'normal', the movie choice has a much better color scheme.

Ah, didn't see your review, sorry.

Do you mind the reduced left shift key? Normally I wouldn't but with it being my first chiclet keyboard, I'm afraid it could end up being awkward to use. Curse you Canadian multilingual keyboards! D:

Do you know where the laptops ship from when ordering from the Canadian site? If they ship from an american warehouse, I was wondering if I could make a case towards Lenovo to ship me the US version instead. Package forwarding is too risky in terms of possible customs fees. =/

i purchased the 086226 model of the Lenovo Y570

    i7
    8gb ram
    500gb hdd @7200rpm
    555m
    no blu-ray

i had a coupon that dropped the price to $836.10 BEFORE taxes. after taxes and UPS 3 day shipping, grand total was $932.14.

placed order on 8-20 and was sent a e-mail saying "estimate shipping date 8-29"

on 8-23 was sent an e-mail saying my purchase has been shipped from the facility. a few hours after that i was able to see my tracking #. turns out they shipped it using UPS 2nd day air (on the lenovo order status page it said 2-3 days. before i placed the order, when i chose shipping method it clearly said "UPS 3 Day" so i was surprised.

it should be coming in today. total of 5 days (4 business days). cant wait!!!

It depends your habits, I don't find it awkward at all. In fact, I was happy to see a key between shift and Z (to make "«" "»" yay !)

If you want to know ... at extreme left, my left hand always points while typing «Left shift, A, W, D, Space) pure gamer position xD
So I don't mind the key cut in 1/3

Laptops are being shipped from China, and depending where it gets shipped, you get the country version.

    Hello everyone,
I just received my Lenovo Y470, Serial Number: CB09909359, Laptop 2 weeks ago. I realized that almost all of the driver, including The 2 GPU driver that were preinstalled is very outdated. the nvidia Driver version is 8.17.12.6844, 268.44. BIOS version 206. So I went to Nvidia to get an update. I used the automatic Scan. But it gave me this msg.
"The manufacturer of this system requires that you download the driver for your GPU from their support site.

The GeForce M series and GeForce Go series notebook GPUs use drivers that have been customized by the notebook manufacturers to support hot key functions, power management functions, lid close and suspend/resume behavior. NVIDIA has worked with some notebook manufacturers to provide notebook-specific driver updates, however, most notebook driver updates must come from the notebook manufacturer. Additionally, the desktop GeForce graphics drivers will not install on Geforce M series and Quadro M series notebook GPU's. "

I looked through this forum and a couple of people said that they installed the new driver successfully without any problem. So I tried it after trying all sorts of methods of install, the driver is installed properly. Or so I thought. But the 'Nvidia GPU Activity' is somehow not detecting any application that is set to use the Nvidia Card. Everytime, Without Fail. When you go to the Nvidia Control Panel, and select 'adjust image settings with preview', It decided to BSOD me. So I did the system restore but the same thing happen when selecting that 'adjust image settings with preview'. also now I cannot even go into the L4D2 game without it BSODing me. Does anyone have this problem at all? for those who succeeded in installing the new driver. Can you please let me know in Detail (I am quit a computer idiot So detailed would be greatly appreciated) what you did to have it successfully installed and run it without problems. and also if you have updated drivers other than the GPU please let me know. Thank You so Much! Sorry its lengthy.

Have you used the silver switch on the front to turn on the nVidia graphics?

I just got my y570 in the mail. I like and dislike the side numberpad at the same time, it results in some keys being smaller, but it's also good for when i want to play garry's mod.

I'm going to be installing Windows 7 Ultimate on it in a bit, so i was wondering if there were any useful peices of software that came on the machine that I should reinstall afterwards(Aside from all the drivers, lol).

How long is the battery life you guys are getting on a full charge?

I am only looking at 3hrs on a full charge without the optimus on on energy saver.

What mode do I need to use to maximize battery life?

I just received my y570 (Canada) in the mail yesterday.

So far the laptop has been great. When I unboxed the laptop, I realized the bottom panel was popped out a bit so I decided popped it back in. A bit dissapointed with that fact.

I installed Microsoft Office 2010 onto the computer. After two hours later, the displayer driver went crazy. The LED backlit wouldnt turn on (it was almost pitch black with the screen barely visible) and the computer wouldn't start up so I had to restore it back to factory settings. Has anyone encountered this?

I can get over 4 hours on a full charge without Optimus on, just watching YouTube videos and browsing the internet. I do use that Power Management program that Lenovo includes as bloatware, which makes the screen brightness go down to around 50%. I mostly use my laptop on a charger though for playing games.

I have a Y470, by the way. Not sure which one you have.

Also, I don't use the Energy Star mode on the battery settings.
