Im thinking about getting an external enclosure, is USB 3.0 worth it if I have a 5400rpm HD to put inside it?

It will be good, sure. More future-proof too. I have a 500GB WD my passport that is USB3. Definitely much faster on USB3 than 2. Love it.

Wildcard, you have a 40gb MSATA correct? What are some tips to get the most out of my ssd and its space?

I got a 64GB mSATA. With Office 2010, Photoshop CS5, Vegas Pro, BF3, I am using 43.5GB and have 16GB left. There are some guides out there. First you turn off hibernation, do not use system restore, reduce pagefile, you will start getting a lot of space back. Use this guide which is very thorough.

Anybody have the OneKey theater driver? I need to re-install the program. My OneKey options are only Normal, Movie and Intelligent. Music isn't even a choice.

I am interested in purchasing either the y470 or msi x460dx and have a few questions about the Lenovo.

Is this model compact/portable? I use my laptop mostly on the couch and am worried about the weight and size off this.

How is the heat on the bottom when on your lap?

And my last concern is the battery. Under a light load of mostly Web browsing what can I expect to get out of it with a msata asd installed?

    Thanks for any insight...

I needed a portable laptop for schoolwork and classes for a long time. Just bought a refurbished Y470 with i5 processor, 4GB of RAM, 500GB 7200RPM HDD for $510 at the Lenovo Outlet. Pretty happy about the purchase. Did anyone manage to snag an i7 for similar price? Does i5 suffer from throttling issues at all? Is the battery life on i5 exactly the same as on i7 with light use such as browsing/ MS office work?

Planning to install more RAM and mSata drive when I get it. Is ram easily accessible from the backpanel? I'm really happy to finally join the Lenovo club :)

    Did you not disable hibernation?

Yea that is an awesome buy. My Y570 was $430 from the outlet. The i5 is great with no throttling I've ever experienced. Battery life is well over 5 hours. Easy to access msata and RAM as well. Awesome deal.

okay so they that weekly deal for the y570 i7 8gb model and my question is should i go for it? i kind of wanted the new model coming in april with 1980 x1080 resolutio with geforce 660gtx. Let me just say that im a medium gamer playing only NBA2k and other games. but the 1980 x1080 makes me reconsider this. also the heating problems people seem to be getting discourages me. so can you please help me out!!

If you can wait, wait. I do not have any heat issues. But I know some do, all probably just related to horrible thermal paste job from factory. They tend to lay it on thick, actually hurting than helping.

I was getting ready to pull the trigger on a new Y470 2670QM with blu-ray from the Lenovo shop, but noticed the outlet center had a Y470, 2410, 4GB, 750GB hd, and blu-ray for $560. Seemed too good to pass up. I wanted the blu-ray, but was a little weary of the quad core due to heat.

    Decent system for the price?

Definitely. I was eyeballing that one too and even had it in my cart for a while. However, I don't have any real use for a blu-ray player. So I passed it up for you, because I'm such a nice guy, getting the one with DVD-ROM instead for $50 less :)

You can check temp monitoring with this program: CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting

In a perfect world your GPU should be below 90C, CPU below 75C and HDD below 60C with some slight overlap under extremely heavy load. Those are just general figures for all laptops, I'm really not sure about specifics because I haven't received my Y470 yet.

This is normal. WEI doesn't work properly with switchable graphics, besides it's just a terrible benchmark. In order to get a real assurance that your GPU works properly, download 3DMark 06/3DMark Vantage/3DMark 11 or just the last 2. Make sure that the dedicated graphics are on and run the benchmark. Then compare them to other users.

I ran the 3d mark vantage and i think i have an issue im not seeing NVIDIA GeForce GT 550M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-2670QM Processor,LENOVO Base Board Product Name score: P4749 3DMarks that link should work but im not sure I have the 550m on and i have it set to high performence but it seems to not be holding up to what it should I see the driver is out fo date I'll get the new one and run again i guess

Graphics Score 3996. That score is adequate for the card, it's working properly. Integrated graphics would score 1000-1300.

Alright so after a month of comparing different notebooks I have finally 100% decided on the Y470 by Lenovo. I am on a limited budget and am going with a refurbished unit from the outlet with the i7, 750gb 5400rpm HDD, and 8gb Ram for $600. Can't find all that in a notebook anywhere else close to that price.

Only 2 things troubleing me and was hoping someone could verify. Do all y470s have 550M graphics and ability to add msata drive?

Under the specs for the one I want it says 520M and No WWAN Supported. (I thought the msata port is the WWAN slot.)

Heres the one im ordering if interested

Hey all I'm looking to get an mSATA SSD for my new Y570. Does anyone have any recommendations for an SSD with similar performance as the SSD+HDD stock combo.

What write/read speeds should I be looking for?? Thanks

Hi all, I'm looking into picking up an y570 with an i5/4gb/500gb 7200rpm. From the looks of it, most people are happy with their purchases. I'm looking for a fairly powerful device at a good pricepoint and it looks like this laptop fits the bill. Any advice? Thanks

yes all 470's have the 550m (mine did, i got it from lenovo website five months ago and all the other y470's listed there had the 550M as well)...this is a refurbished model and an outlet version...and the regular version has WWAN even though I have no experience with it...

    Quote from a laptopreview comment...
"Hi again,Tell you the truth, I have no experience with WWAN at all. But I do know that the WLAN card is connected to the mini-PCIe port next to the normal Hard Drive in the larger compartment in the laptop. The smaller compartment has an additional mini-PCIe slot that is wired for SATA (the WLAN port is not) – so this is where you install the drive. I believe it is also the same slot you would use for WWAN or a TV Tuner.

Hope that helped." and the link for the quote... http://www.laptopreviews.com/lenovo-ideapad-y470-review-2011-12

These are the regular Y470 and prices. Lenovo - IdeaPad Y470 14.0" laptop

I was just making sure the refurbished units have the same base specs. Must be a typo. I did email Lenovo and awaiting response. Don't have money till Friday anyways and am prob going to pay expedited shipping and also buy a msata ssd.

For me there's two choices. MYDIGITALSSD 64GB on Amazon for 100. or intel 310 series 40GB on Ebay for 110.
Intel is the best but costs more. I think I will get this one.

Why is the Intel 310 40GB better? Doesn't it have lower speeds than the MyDigitalSSD?

Hmm seems as if the MyDigitalSSD is the best value for money...wouldn't mind the 80GB Intel 310 but I don't have the money :( Do you reckon the MyDigitalSSD 64GB will perform similar to the Intel 80GB 310?
