It looks like the y470 with i7 runs about 10 degrees hotter than the y570 i7. Now, I guess I will go with an i5 y470 or an i7 y570. Hmm.... size/weight or (unnecessary) speed :/
-
I love my y470 (If anybody wants me to do a review I will)
Anyway to turn off Tap-to-Click? It is NOT in Synaptics Driver settings :/ -
I'm concerned about the fact that ruhtraeel is getting 45-50 fps on his Y470 with the 550M in Black Ops with high settings while Dj1001 is getting 20+ fps on his Y570 with the 555M with pretty low settings. Obviously there must be a driver problem with the 555M, particularly considering Black Ops crashed with the newest drivers on Dj1001's Y570, but this is probably my main concern right now.
I like the lack of numeric keypad on the Y470, along with the smaller pixel pitch and the 14" size, which seems an idea compromise for me between adequate size and portability. The Y570, on the other hand, has the 555M as its main advantage, which isn't so much of an advantage if the 555M has problems. I realize that, if we are talking about a driver problem, it's something that should get cleared up in time, but I'm not really ecstatic about the prospect of getting a Y570 and then have to wait and wonder regarding when it'll perform up to spec.
So, if owners of both the Y470 and Y570 would care to chime in regarding their GPU performance, it might really help those of us that are on the fence to get an idea of what's really going on. Personally, it's getting to the point where I should really make up my mind, and this would certainly help. -
On another note, could anyone give me an idea of projected battery life just while word processing, with WiFi off and power setting set to the most conservative option, preferably with the fan set to super silent mode? Obviously, I want to see how long I can type before running out of juice. If I can squeeze out a long word processing session plus have a gaming laptop, that would be great.
Speaking of super silent mode, has anyone tried it yet? I haven't heard anyone at all complain about fan noise, so I'm guessing that the fan noise under regular settings is pretty good, but I'm still curious, as there are times I'd want the laptop to be as quiet as possible. Any opinions about the fan noise would be appreciated, though. -

I didn't install any new drivers, all of them are stock.
Keep in mind that I was playing zombies not campaign. That may be a difference, I'll try the campaign when I transfer my save files over.
Settings were "Extra" textures, 8xAA, 16xAF, shadows, bullet decals, everything else on, and number of corpses set to large.
THIS MAY BE IMPORTANT ABOUT PERFORMANCE:
Before, I was playing Black Ops with my M1330 but with an external Radeon 5870 hooked up to it with x1 bandwidth.
IT WAS SLOW.
The settings were 1920*1080 (22 inch monitor, but it still shouldn't take THAT much of a performance hit), EVERYTHING OFF, except texture details high. I switched them to the lowest, and it made almost no difference at all.
Indoors, I could get 40-60 fps, but scenes with massive outdoor levels, the framerate dropped to about 10.
My M1330's specs were:
Intel Core 2 Duo T5750 (2.00ghz)
4GB RAM
Nvidia 8400M GS onboard, using external Radeon 5870.
250GB HDD
HOWEVER, my Radeon 5870 showed 8500 3dmark06's, which is very close to the projected 8817 of the GT 550m.
This leads me to believe that Black Ops is not very dependent on the GPU as much as the CPU or RAM.
Same with Bad Company 2. No matter what settings I used with my 5870, I couldn't get a smooth framerate, even with everything at low. Then Nando told me that to get playable framerates, I needed a better processor and the bandwidth to be at least x1E (Radeon card tweak) instead of x1.
EDIT: It's not like my Radeon 5870 didn't help at all. When I played Borderlands with it, I could max out everything but with shadows off (because shadows use CPU IIRC), and I could also run SC2 at higher settings.
I haven't been monitoring the actual temperature, but I have constantly put my hand down to feel how hot the laptop gets.
Only the vent and a small portion around the vent heats up while gaming, but the rest of the laptop stays at a constant cool temperature.
The fan is very, very quiet.
By the way, my username is my name backwards.
EDIT2:
I'm using a cheap cooling pad with 2 fans, and the temperatures are as follows while playing Black Ops Campaign (it runs very smoothly, average about 45 fps)
CPU: 65 degrees Celsius
GPU: 55 degrees Celsius -

1.To answer questions about heat, the Thai reviews seem to state that the heat under load is quite decent about 80 at max... I can't speak from experience thiough.
2.There shouldn't be any throttling issues.
3. No idea.
4. The gpu itself should be overclockable but not sure how much the BIOS is allowing. -
ok this is getting seriously ridiculous. I order my y570 i think may 29 with a bag. it had an estimated ship date of 31st of may. i check a day after, it jumps to june 9th. I wait till june 9th and now the estimated ship date is june 30th
I also ordered a backpack seperately a day after, it had a estimated ship date of june 9th. today comes when its suppose to ship and the estimated ship date has jumped to july 22nd.. This is ridiculous... Is this how they normally do business? -
can one of you nice people answer a couple of questions for me on the Y570
1. Is the keyboard backlit?
2. Number of USB 2 and 3 ports?
Thanks so much. -
I'm finally home and was able to give my wife's 470 a try. I played Left 4 Dead with all settings on High @ 1280 x 768. I had AA disabled and AF set to bilinear. She had a steady 60 fps through everything. When I turned AA and AF to the max she was still going at a steady 60 with dips in FPS to around 40. I had the optimus switch on and had no trouble with the cards switching. I'm currently on my Y570 installing Left 4 Dead, Team Fortress 2, Rainbow Six Vegas 2 and Guild Wars. I'll give a description of my results in the games.

no one else having issues with the shipping dates getting pushed out another month?
-
This was their response:
Dear ***,
Thank you for contacting Lenovo.
We apologize. As of now we also have the same date (the week of 30th of June). Please note that the given date is an estimated ship date which has been generated by the system and it is not entirely correct. Right now the Hard Drive is in backlog. I would request you to contact us again after 2 business days and we hope get a better update by then. -
you got the rapid drive?
-
-
i wonder if i can change my order and not get the rapid drive if it would ship tonight lol like it was suppose to.
-
i thought so called biggest computer maker in china would offer better reliance than this.
-
Late shipping has been a consistent problem with Lenovo in my experience. It happened with my Thinkpad T61 back in 2008 -- I waited almost two months.
I called a bunch of times and was given a free 3 year next-business day warranty as compensation.
They clearly have some supply chain problems unfortunately. -
-
To Dj1001: Have you spoken with Lenovo or in any way figured out more about what your problem is? Obviously, from what ruhtraeel reports your Y570 is really underperforming. (Not trying to male you feel bad... just checking to see if anything's been figured out.) -
I purchased the Y470 on June 1st and it has shipped as of June 7th. The expected delivery date was listed as June 14th, though that has since disappeared. This will be my first Laptop. I prefer desktop computers but was in need of something mobile for school. The Y470 seemed to have some nice specs at a nice price. I will post impressions when I get the laptop on Tuesday Hopefully.
I will post the basic 3d mark scores if anyone is interested, than get rid of the bloatware and do some optimizations and see what else I get. The newest Pc Game I have is Starcraft 2 so I will post my impressions on how well that runs on the laptop as well. -
turtlefoodasaurus Notebook Enthusiast
Are you guys getting the 2yr warranties or just sticking with the basic? My possible y470 i5 costs $27 for the extra year if i get it, can't decide.
-
if a laptop lasts a year it can usually survive another two
-
I ordered an I5 y470 on June 1st, when I ordered it said 3 business days shipping, it "shipped" on the 7th, but the tracking number didnt update till 11pm on the 9th, I am supposed to get it on the 14th, hope this helps anyone regarding their shipping dates etc.

Notebookcheck posted a new review yesterday of the Y560p (you can check it out on their homepage), and they gave a terrible review the screen. I mean, really bad. Very low contrast, too reflective screen, lousy viewing angles, unusable outdoors.
So, the obvious question is: How do Y470 and Y570 owners feel about their screens? Anyone able to compare with the Y460 or Y560? -
My y570 is on the truck for delivery today. Hopefully I'll be home in time to receive it. I'll post my impressions as soon as I can.
-
@fractl, if it makes you feel any better I would never have purchased the y560 (any model) simply because the build on those particular models are sub-par (imo). Most people have been saying the 570 screen is about average.
-
One more question, owner of Y470 can you tell what is the material of the outside top cover, the Dusk Black cover? Plastic, alumi ?
How about the inside material, the palm rest area? thanks. -
Ordered my y570 on June 3rd and the status changed to "shipped" today.
I am expecting it on the 14th, so next week.
Hopefully everything will workout for me and will try to post a brief review on it since most of the people here seemed to have purchased y470. -
Im pretty sure thats exactly what the slot is for... It looks like a perfect fit.
Pretty sure the top is plastic but feels really solid. The palm rest is brushed aluminum and doesnt get too warm.
Has anyone else realized that this laptop takes forever to charge? My old acer went from 10% to 100% in 1.5 hours at most. This laptop charges much much slower.. -
Yes, I do think it charges slowly. Definitely noticed that. I still think it gets great battery life though. -
gioellip said: ↑Hey ekokinex! How was your Y570? Mind doing a full review? Searching for reviews anywhere and still cannot find one. And how was the performance of your games? Thank you so much!Click to expand...
I'm posting from a gaming standpoint. I just ran the Video Stress Test in CS:S and the average fps was 194. While playing CS:S fps was between 140-240 at all times. I will be trying Splinter Cell: Conviction and Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 soon.
The 555m seems to be kicking in and working fine. I saved the system information into a text file (an option in the control panel) here is all the information.

R6:Vegas 2 ran smoothly with all settings maxed at native resolution on Terrorist Hunt on Villa. I don't have the fps because I haven't been using Fraps, I've been using console commands for Source games (cl_showfps 1 and net_graph 3).

Sorry, but, I do not have any of the latest games, and currently, the only game I have installed (with probably the most graphic potential) (I must move everything over from my old laptop is Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars. The game is an RTS from 2007.
I can run it at 1920x1090 (23 inch Samsung B2330 external sVGA monitor) with every setting on Ultra (Low, Medium, High, Ultra). I haven't cranked Anti-Aliasing up to the absolute top, but I will if you want.
By the way, I have the i5 y470 without BluRay, RapidDrive, etc. (Second choice from left to right on the webpage) Model 085523U -
Still can't disable tap-to-click. I don't want to be annoying about it, but I do wish to find a way to turn it off.
Thanks,

Thanks! Mind if you answer this questions?
1. What do you think about the build quality of the Y570?
2. I just read about the driver issues of the gpu. Have you tried other drivers or the stock one?
3. How is the screen and touchpad?
Thank you! -
thanks ruhtraeel, will email your contact Daniel if still can get 25%, hope he will reply before Sunday.
Will let you know.
Thanks a million for the response and the information about the Y470 material.

He said he would give me a 25% discount if I ordered that one day, then my father couldn't find the box to put his sales ID in to get the discount, so we exchanged messages and phone calls.
By the time we finally ordered it (because their office hours close at 5:00pm Mountain Time Canada), the price went down to $1100, and he gave us 25% off that.
THIS IS FOR THE CANADIAN Y470.

1. This is only my second laptop. My first one was a Toshiba Satellite A305D-S6851. It was a display model and made completely of plastic. This Y570 is my first brand new laptop. The build quality is much better than the toshiba The actual chassis/body feels solid. I like the aluminum/metal feeling material Lenovo went with. I haven't noticed anything that would make me wary of it falling to pieces. I do plan to take very good care of it regardless.
2. I haven't had any issue with drivers as of yet. I've only used the stock drivers for both GPUs.
3. I think the screen is good, bright and colorful. The touchpad is also designed well. The only thing is the single button (which is actually 2 buttons) takes some getting used to. -

Glad to hear you don't seem to be having any issues, but I was wondering if you'd played anything that gave the GPU a good challenge? Given that you only usually hear if someone's having problems, I'd love to hear someone report good performance with the Y570, like we heard from ruhtraeel about the Y470. Sorry to be a pest, but I'd really like to order asap, and I don't want to chose the Y570 over the Y470 for the 555M until I hear a positive report or two.
Also, I know it's unlikely, but have you taken the Y570 outdoors? I don't expect it to be usable in the sunshine, but I was hoping maybe it would be usable in the shade.
Thanks. -

I installed Fraps so I could test SC: Conviction and R6: Vegas 2. I ran both at 1366 x 768 (native res.) on the highest settings with AA and AF off. R6: V2 defaulted to level 8 (highest settings). SC: C ran at a steady 35 fps, R6: V2 ran between 55-75 fps.

anyone else getting random bluescreens, especially while gaming?
y570 w/rapiddrive
latest drivers from lenovo.com except graphics- i am using the latest from the nvidia site. -
@ fractl and gioellip
I have not taken it outside yet. I'm not really sure about contrast, I'm not well informed on the finer details of comparing displays. The native res. has not given me any reason to be disappointed with the laptop in gaming or web browsing. I can say as I stated in a recent post of mine that SC: Conviction runs decently well on high settings. If the game was set to medium settings I am confident reaching 45-60 fps would not be difficult. It is currently my
newest game (just bought it last week on Steam). I know it is already a year old but all my recent FPS games are on XBOX 360. My Toshiba had an ATI Radeon 3100 HD which could barely play games at anything besides low settings (CS:S, L4D). -

This is a great laptop. I love it.
I was about to do a review too...
I may have a lemon though.
All the sudden Windows cannot boot.
Posting from my PartedMagic (GREAT Little Tool!) CD.
Anyone else having issues?
