I wish more high end laptops used AMD.

I'm just a big fan of choice. A lot of people I know use AMD on their high end gaming rigs and they rant and rave about it. So it'll be nice to get higher end performance at a less expensive price.

The green team has traditionally held the performance crown for notebooks. AMD doesn't make its presence known for some reason in the upper end segment as well as it could. Take the 7870m, for example. Lots of potential, crappy drivers. Then the 8870m, same card as last generation, still crappy drivers. Now we have the abomination r270m, which is still the same card. It's like they're not evrn trying. At least nvidia changed core count throughtout the gtx x60.

From what I've heard AMD is a far better choice if youre also going to need some usage in stuff that involves opengl

1. amd is just so bad at developing new architectures
7970m is rebranded into 8970m with just factory OCing
8970m is rebranded into r9 m290x with just a DRIVER UPDATE, if you go into the bios it still shows 8970m
2. amd isn't power efficient enough. let's just ignore maxwell's insane efficiency for now, even kepler isn't that bad with power and it gets reasonably hot
AMD can't even fit L3 cache in without overheating the chips, so that just shows how bad they are on mobile platform
3. there aren't even enough mobile GPUs out there to correspond with NV's equivalent.
this isn't back in the days when we have 5470m all the way to 5850m, right now we only have m290x, m270, m265 and m230. you can count the current gen amd mobile GPUs in one hand, not to mention m290x is only the performance of an 870m. even if we count the soon to be released r9 m295x, the one with a new architecture, there's still not enough
this is not fanboying on nvidia or something, this is objective reality. AMD sucks a$$ on mobile platform for both CPU and GPU. A10 can barely beat an i3.
AMD's got quite a few cool features that they didn't utilize well on mobile. crossfiring APU with GPU is cool but amd doesn't have any good ones, that's just sad -
Basically 1 intel core is equivalent to 1.5 AMD cores. -
Posted this in the other thread(why are there two threads?):
Well, I believe it now that I see it... This screen is terrible. 62% sRGB, 44% NTSC, 47% AdobeRGB were my readings. Viewing angles are terrible. About as bad as the Razer Blade 2013 screen. The y510p and y500 screens were much better than this so I don't get it...
This is the BestBuy version so it does have Intel 7260 Wifi, 2GB vRam and is a touchscreen. It also came with an external DVD player. I won't have this in my hand past the end of the day, so if you have any questions, please ask. -

Offtopic: Did octi get banned? -
That's...very bad. Most average screens get at least 60%.
Man. Maybe I should cancel my order.
Anybody got readings for the non-touch version? -
2x2 ram only benefits the integraphics which pretty much no one needs when you have a dGPU. plus if it's 1x8gb then I can just throw in another 4 or 8gb with boosted performance and better iGP
offtopic: yeah I saw octi got banned when I was reading the razer thread, didn't think he would get banned before I do. how so LOL? but now he's back i think -
Hi, I just got my y50, I ordered from Canada and it does have a bilingual keyboard for those who were wondering. However some text on screen appear to be blurry and I was wondering if anyone figured out how to fix this.

Okay guys, I received my Best Buy version of the Lenovo Y50 and honestly I'm impressed. All the bad viewing angle talk and keyboard flex talk had me worried. Yes the viewing angles aren't the best and there is keyboard flex, but I feel like it's only there when you try and find it. For me I set it up on my desk and in most scenarios the angle is just fine. Occasionally I'll stretch my back or move a bit and I can see there's a bit of wash, but it's only when I notice it, Sometimes I'll keep my back straight and it's doesn't occur to me that the colors just washed out until I go hunch again.
Long story short it's bearable like others have said.
From what I've read on this thread, the best buy version is not any different than the other reviews out there. The only perk for me is I can return it to a best buy if I end up not liking it within 14 days. I also get reward points because of this purchase.
It's not bad.
It's definitely not IPS lol and I really doubt the Tiger Direct version is, but I'm still interested to get a conclusive answer.PsylentStorm likes this. -

I forgot to add the BB model comes with a external optical drive that's USB powered. I don't know if the others are.
Secondly, I have Windows 8.1 Pro, should I do a clean install on it. -
Looks like we ll just have to wait for the other guy to confirm the TigerD IPS panel

After playing with the settings I was able to get it as close as possible to a normal color pattern, it was a combination of color calibration and intel settings. I will post a picture with an ips display next to it with the same background. At first it was quite bad, also a lot of programs are showing blurry text, which was easily fixed in properties/compatibility/disable dpi scaling. The boot time of the 512gb ssd model is 10-11 seconds.
The display on the right is an IPS full hd display (surface 2); The display on the left is the lenovo y50 after my calibration. I think it's not as bad as some people say it is, and I am editing a lot of pictures, so my display test is usually opening my website and checking if my pictures look the same, and although the color accuracy is not 100% sRGB it's pretty close I think. If somebody wants me to run a tool that gives specific numbers about the color accuracy can feel free to tell me which one and maybe drop a link and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

For those of you that did a fresh copy of Windows, did you guys clear all the partitions or just clear out the Windows partition. Just in case.

hey guys,
does any of you guys know if you can change the sharpness of the panel? i was able to mess around in the intel graphics property to change of the brightness and color saturation since the picture mode wasn't saturated enough for me. Now it's as vibrant as ever. The only thing i wish i could change is the sharpness. Thanks. -
Is the Lenovo Y50 Touch accidental damage protection worth it? For $120 it warrants for 2 years against "drops, spills, electrical surges, failure of the integrated screen". Will be using on a college campus, so lugging it around quite a bit. Just wondering if y'all think this is a good buy or waste of money. Thanks.

I mostly did it by feel, I started with the display calibration from the properties on the desktop. And I checked how the colors look after each change. I think the biggest change came from the display calibration. The DPI thing, I actually googled that one. If you see an app that has some blurry text, dont worry it's not the display, you just have to disable the dpi scaling through the steps I wrote. I don't know for sure what the situation is going to be with the touch model. I have the non-touch, from what I've heard the touch has a better display.

My Y50 comes on Tuesday. To owners: would a design professional be able to get past the screen's shortcomings? Here's a new video of some color comparisons: Lenovo Y50 Another Color Monitor Comparison - YouTube
Another thread seemed to find a replacement IPS screen, but we wanted the touch functionality and I'm worried we would lose it.
