You probably missed the part where I've ordered my own Y50. Wouldn't have done that if I didn't like the laptop, would I?
I give examples of other laptops because some people were asking if this was a good deal, and some even explicitly asked for other options. You have a problem with that?
And there are people who also discredit those who have issues with this laptop, saying they have no problems with it and don't get what all the complaints are about. Essentially, they're doing exactly what you're accusing me of doing, just in reverse.
So no, I won't get off my high horse because I wasn't on one to begin with. I, and others, are trying to to get as much information about this device as we can. That involves picking apart reviews and playing devils advocate on both sides.
I've also started a thread to help those looking to replace their displays, in the spirit of helping folks who end up buying the Y50. Which is more than what most people posting here have done.

Problems that don't exist? So since they don't exist for you they don't exist for others? You have an extremely single tracked mind. Yup, just because the Y50 is the image of perfection for you doesn't mean others will view it the same way. People have differing opinions on the same thing? It's a revelation, I know.
As of this point, I am still planning on ordering the 4k version of the Y50, but yes, my mind could change based on new facts that surface. It sounds like to me YOU are the one trying to convince yourself that the machine you've got is hand crafted from god himself or something. -
I think we should all calm down. There's really no sense getting worked up on an Internet forum while discussing a laptop. I really don't think getting emotional over the subjects discussed here is worthwhile.

There is no sense, but it seems like some people have to respond guns blazing every time someone suggests a negative, or even asks about a potential problem, that should be taken into account when deciding to purchase the laptop. Probably out of a desire for self justification, no doubt.

I know I haven't been as active as a lot of folks on this forum, but I'm going to politely ask folks to stay on topic. As entertaining as it may be for some, I (and I'm sure quite a few others) get much more out of this thread when there is useful information shared about this laptop instead of the bantering and bickering that happens from time to time here. Let's please all act like adults (even if some are not) and keep it civil. Thanks so much, and have a wonderful day! :hi2:

Those who have the laptop and are experiencing problems or find it unsatisfactory get annoyed when told the laptop is perfect.
Those who have the laptop and find it to be working flawlessly get annoyed when told the laptop is junk.
What people need to realize is only by acknowledging both the good and the bad can you improve upon something. If you only look at the good things, you won't see a need to improve and rest on your laurels. If you only see the bad you may just drop the idea/product entirely.XxxKing YBxxX likes this. -
Somebody in another thread mentioned that they also changed the hard drive and replaced it with a SSD with a fresh Windows 7 installation, and apparently had no issues.
As was mentioned earlier in this thread, just make sure you enable legacy mode in the BIOS. -
There are also a few people who've ordered replacement screens and will be posting their results and hopefully uploading video guides.
Keep an eye on the Y50 screen replacement thread for updates. -
Add 1 more user for missed keys. I thought it was just me, but it kept happening. I just came back to this thread looking for others having the same problem. It is quite annoying.

Just to throw my $0.02 in, I own this laptop and have had missed key strokes, but without a doubt I still like the laptop. In fact, my left speaker rattled, and I'm very disappointed with the HDD performance and I returned it and got a replacement instead of a refund. I think the laptop is perfect for my needs. Perhaps it's the price that I love, or the fact it has a touch screen and doesn't get crazy hot like the Razer does. I don't know, but if missed keyboard strokes are the only thing I have to deal with after getting an SSD, then I will be happy and recommend it to friends and family.

Blasphemy!
You cannot have this problem becuase other members that have the Y50 say they don't .... You are wrong sir!
Maybe you guys need better typing skills.
All kidding aside but it happened to me as well (thought it was just my crappy typing skills) when I tried my buddies Y50.
Maybe some of the keyboards are defective. -
We've been watching the Y50 threads for some time now, and after recent warnings in the Y50 pre-release thread, we have observed that some of the members who previously were often involved in confrontations and throwing insults and rude language, have become much more controlled and constructive lately. That, in turn, has made the threads more useful with more valuable content for others to enjoy.
Thank you for that, and well done! Also, thank you to all who help calm the waters when tempers flare up.
Unfortunately, that does not apply to all. Some members seemingly still cannot control themselves or deal with the fact that others can have different, and perfectly legitimate, opinions.
The rules of this forum (that was a link) state very clearly:
This Owners Lounge thread generally has had a higher percentage of quality content and less bickering and junk than the original Y50 thread -- which is not unusual for pre-release threads where speculation about specs and delivery is often the main topic.
Let this serve as a warning that we need a higher standard here in this Owners Lounge thread than some of you may have gotten used to in the pre-release thread. And we will be quicker to issue infractions -- or even bans -- to members who consistently break the rules.
Thank you for listening. And with that, please resume discussion of Y50 Owners Experience -- which is the topic of this thread. -
To whoever has the Best Buy model, can you confirm whether it's the AUO panel or the Che Mei panel? Thank you.
-
Just typed a 10 page long report and the keyboard did not miss a single stroke.
It's almost as good as a MBP keyboard.

To those with the missed-keystroke problems:
have you tried a clean install of Windows, and let Windows detect and install the drivers? That seems to have worked for other problems that some people have experienced.
Could someone with this problem try it and report back? Thanks! -
A shame some people received keyboards that miss key strokes, sorry for those, but the keyboard on my y50 touch works flawlessly and I love typing on it! It really is an amazing keyboard
-
the keyboard sounds like a production series problem rather than an actual build quality issue.
when the chinese i5 models were released, the first wave, the first ones that are produced have standard qualities but the second wave experienced quality issues such as openings in chassis and others and the third wave comes back normal again.
you can look at when your model is released, if all the ones that have "defective" keyboards are produced on the same period, then it's just production problem because of rushed order
it's inexcusable that they could be having quality issues because of rushed orders, it's certainly not a major problem that SOME people need to freak out about because they are not using crappy keyboards
instead of freaking over keyboards not registering keys, why don't the people who have this problem report what model they have and where they got it from so we can look further into this matter here? -
-
Looks like I missed all the chaos yesterday about the keyboards.
Just a thought though: Asus and some Acer models were plagued last year with loose keyboard ribbons. Turned out they had either be unplugged and replugged in or taped down to register the keystrokes properly. Not saying that this is the issue, but if you have problems it wouldn't hurt to open it up and try this out. Worst case nothing improves, but if it does help, it's something that can be posted on this thread to do instead of going through the headache of doing a return.
-
It would be very helpful if the owners of the matte non-touch version could all post their display hardware ID, much more so than a subjective "it's great/it sucks".
It appears the AUO display is superior to the CMN. -

Don't know how I never noticed this thread...
I have the Matte version from Newegg. It has the CMN15C4 panel. -

In fact, I can easily reproduce the issue. If I press the lower left corner of any key (actually ANY corner OR side) - it does depress, but only registers a letter about 25-50% of the time. It looks like I need to ht the center of each key to be guaranteed I get the letter.
I would be really intereted (interested) if anyone else who thinks their keyboard is perfect would try a little test of jst (just) depressing keys at te (the) edges or off-center. As you can see from my tying this cn (can) be quite annoying! -
Can someone with the Canadian Bilingual Keyboard post a picture of the keyboard? I want to see how it compares to the US one.
Thanks in advance. -

Xentar, when you had your best buy model did you notice/struggle with missing keystrokes? Wondering if the BB laptops are part of the ones with this apparent manufacturing defect.

Ok guys, I'm out! Thanks a lot to everyone who provided info and reviews and helped me make my decision to get the Y50 Touch from Klick. I have no defects or problems of any kind and am super happy with my purchase. Good luck to everyone else with their Y50s!
It's been fun, but I've wasted an insane amount of time on this thread and the original Y50 thread. Now that I have my laptop and have given back a bit by writing a review there's no reason for me to stick around. And I have a feeling the mod's warning comments were aimed at me, lol, so since some posters (mostly XxxKingYBxxX) are pissing me off, I better leave peacefully instead of getting banned. Maybe I'll be back sometime in the future. Till then, peace!rupeshwar, XxxKing YBxxX, Earlcooo and 1 other person like this. -

Is getting around 40 fps on far fry 2 ultra no AA reasonable for the 860m? Cause I should be maxing it, right?

Very happy with my Y50 purchase, you can't beat the price/performance and form factor of the laptop. I've added my own ssd and I've done a fresh windows 7 install.
A few things I had to do:
1. In BIOS switch to legacy support, you have to do this when downgrading from windows 8.1.
2. In BIOS I had to switch from AHCI to Compatible SATA mode.
3. Turn off secure boot so you can install windows with the provided USB external optical drive.
4. All the software/drivers including windows 7 compatible ones are available on the lenovo support website.
5. I ran into not being able to install my nvidia driver because it says it can't find any compatible hardware, check the bottom of this page for a fix:

Now I'm just waiting for my new screen to arrive so I can replace the TN panel. -

Just curious.. Have all the received models thus far shipped with 2x4GB of RAM or did any ship with 1x8GB?

And regarding the keyboards, if I get a lemon, can I activate the warranty or return the machine if I'm not in the US (assuming that is my Y50's place of origin)? -
Thanks to everyone who contributes all the great information on the Y50. I've been spending a lot of time over the last couple of months narrowing down on a decision to buy a new laptop. I think the Y50 all-in-all is the way I will go.
One question please.
Has anyone tried to use an HDMI to VGA adapter on this system? My use is 90% at my desk and I would like to keep using my old (but great) 32" VGA flat panel. My understanding is that the HDMI port must be "powered" to use these adapters. Also, any recommendation on an adapter: StarTech, Belkin, other?
Thanks again for all the valuable advice, opinions and tech tips. -
If we wanted anybody kicked out, we would have kicked them out already. That is easy enough to do, but also our last choice. Our goal is obviously to have everybody be helpful, constructive and happy participants (I know, sounds like a commercial).
Just ignore flamebaiters and trolls (the deep breaths I mentioned) and report their posts so we can deal with them -- and you will be fine. That is true for everybody.
The Y50 is a hot item, and what we like to see, is an active Owners Lounge thread with engaged participants, full of quality information and constructive discussion. Debate is fine too, as long as it remains respectful.
One reason we prefer new quality posts to go here, is so as to save new and existing members from having to plow through the 6,000 posts in the pre-release thread -- the bulk of which were made before the first units were delivered and real owner experience existed. Again, that's not unusual with pre-release threads for popular models.
Now please carry on discussing this fine choice of laptop -
My 512 SSD non-touch 4700 purchased from Klick is also having keyboard issues with keys not registering. Glad to see I am not the only one.
It is a very annoying problem to have. I have a Lenovo Y470 that has a similar keyboard and no issues there. Hopefully it is an isolated case and can be warrantied. -

Some of the earlier reviews had pictures of a single 8GB stick installed so it has varied. I've only seen the i5 version confirmed as coming with 2x4GB.

looking for some help from those of you that have done it. keep searching on the internet but cant find the answers im looking for.
i have a new crucial m550 512gb ssd.
i used a program and have the windows key
i have an external 500gb hard drive if need
how do i install the ssd+do a fresh install of windows 8.1?
i dont want to clone. and i cant even find anything on the windows website of how to create a bootable iso on my external hdd. -
Also, I've played with 4 Y50s total...a replacement for my first, a buddy's new machine (from Lenovo) and a demo in a local enthusiast shop. I missed keystrokes similarly on each one of them. My buddy doesn't have any problems on his, or the two I've had in my possession (except a very occasional missing of the 'B' key on the top right corner). I really think this comes down to style rather than malfunction. I find the likelihood of going 0 for 4 on these keyboards unlikely, and my friend has relatively no problems in comparison (though he does type at a much slower pace than I do...60wpm bah!I've since moved to a different machine anyway.
