yea me too, I'm actually torn right now between asus g750jm and lenovo y50, the vram is one of the main factor I keep getting back and forth betw asus n leno. as far as I kmow g750jm would support enough power even at maximum load. right now I'm kinda worry about lenovo y50 power adaptor, My assuption is 135watt is kinda close to the limit moreover I am considering to buy the 4k disp.

Hey there! I recently did the same thing you were trying to do with a clean installation of win8.1. I'll link the instructions I followed below but to summarize- the method you are doing will not work. You will have to obtain a .iso of windows 8.1 64bit Core (AKA Standard) and make a bootable USB using one of the many tools available (microsoft even provides one for Windows 7 which will work). Then you must set the BIOS settings for Boot to Legacy so it will boot from the USB drive.

You will install windows, use a generic key available from Microsoft (just google "generic key windows 8.1 core" , then you'll have to pull the product key (which is stored in the BIOS) and remove the generic key and re-enter your own key. I'm sorry if this was confusing- the article below has video instructions and step by step which should be a lot more informative. GOOD LUCK!

installation - Clean install Windows 8.1 or Windows 8 from OEM key - Super User

If anyone cares, my Best Buy model came with 2x4GB sticks in it as well. I am disappointed with this too, but I plan on buying an SSD first then getting a 8GB stick to make 12GB. I don't think I will ever need 16... now that I say that I just cursed myself.

Secondly, my replacement Y50 Touch from best buy will be here tomorrow. If you guys wanna know something about it just quote this or PM me. It's honestly not much different than the touches already out there, but I can answer whatever my skills allow.

Anyone else have left speaker rattle?

that just hit 135w and there're some overestimates for things like memory and motherboard.

this is still enough, we are not talking about macbook pro adapters that are only 85w and need to power an 110w machine at least

I'm growing more concerned because as I said in one of these threads, I already had to return TWO defective computers (same model - ASUS N56JR) for insufferable keystroke drop issues in April/May, and that's the whole reason I was researching the Y50 to begin with... yet now quite a few people are dealing with the same thing on the Lenovo?! Seriously?! There aren't a lot of laptops that fit my needs so of those of you who use it to type a substantial amount (as I do), who *hasn't* had issues with keystroke drop, which model did you get (the number or touch/non-touch) when was your production date, and who did you buy it from? Just wondering if there is a consensus.

Also, has anyone with keystroke issues contacted Lenovo technical support and what do they say about the issue? How can it be solved? Do they believe it's affected a substantial portion of the laptops? Thanks for any insight.

Has anybody encountered random screen flickering while doing non-gaming related things? I've been getting a random brightness level drop for a millisecond and then back to normal... while browsing the web, moving things around on the desktop, etc. It's nothing I've been able to reproduce, but starting to bother me.

Also, I keep hitting the stupid Num Lock key while trying to get Backspace... but that's my own issue :(

I am a programmer. I write tons of code. When writing code, misspellings cause problems - especially if I don't catch that a keystroke was missed (much less, multiple keystrokes).

I have contcted lenovo support. According to my tech they hve not heard of the issue. He wnt through many thngs (uninstalling drivers for the eyboard, booting into safe mode, using the on-screen keyboard). Incidentally, nothing fixed the ssue and it was labeled a roblem with the hrdwar, and I was given an RMA. s soon as I put the stock HDD back in, I will be returing it to them for 'repair'. They claim a 7-10 day turnaround once they reeive the laptop (plus 2 wks if they do not have the parts to repair).

NOTE: The paragraph above was written without correcting the missed keystrokes (I made no abbreviations - but the keyboard did). Again, my issue can be easily reproduced by pressing the corner of the keys (try fully depressing the corner of any key, repeatedly) - as it will only register <50% of the time.

Thank you! ScubaAddict, what you describe is exactly what I went through with my ASUS N56JR. It was so frustrating, more so than many other laptop problems, because we're down to basic functionality here. But every computer I look at seems to run the risk of having this issue (including other ASUS models - not sure if it's happened on a Lenovo before). I was still within my 30 day return period with New Egg so I sent it back for replacement... and then, after the second one, refund, so I never learned whether ASUS could have fixed the issue or not (but they too said it was electrical/hardware). It just felt like too long to wait after all the waiting I'd done already.

I don't want this to happen again, as I should have had a new working laptop *three months ago*, but I don't know what other laptop to even order!! None of the others seem to fit my needs. I feel like it's such a gamble whether I will get one with a properly working keyboard or not. When you get your laptop back, please let us know if they repaired it successfully. Good luck (and my sympathies!!).

    -college (good keyboard)
-video editing (sony vegas, after effects)
    -mmorpg gaming
    -portability

At the moment I'm down to Gigabyte p34g v2, clevo w230ss, or Lenovo y40/50

If the y40 is truly non-backlit I'll go with the y50 and choose between those 3.

    thoughts?

    Hey all,
I have two quite old laptops:
    - Acer TravelMate 8572TG ~4 years old
    - Acer TravelMate 5720g ~7 years old

Both have a matte screen which I prefer.
How would you compare the Y50 screen to old laptops as the above? Would it be still a huge improvement?

Also, is there any way to buy the model with the matte display?

    Thanks!

Just in case anyone else is interested, I contacted Lenovo and they assure me VGA or DVI adapters will work and that the HDMI port is powered. Always like to hear from someone actually using something, but in this case it's probably a safe bet. I'll confirm when I get the Y50 and a DVI adapter.

This is all opinion based, but you'll notice a big difference in vibrancy in the screen between glossy and matte. I would highly recommend you go to a store viewing FHD laptops with glossy screens to compare your tastes. Those being that old can show big differences in screen quality. Even the latest Dell notebooks have decent screens compared to those two.

So I just got my replacement Y50 and I noticed something and need your help. Does your exhaust ports have open slots across the entire grill? From left to right or did mine have some build quality issues.

    ****edit****

Okay after watching the video it appears to be by design. Lenovo blocked some of the vent grills for whatever reason. Glad it wasn't just me.

    Hi everyone,

I just got my Y50 Touch here in Canada. I am having a bit of buyers remorse. First of all, I wasn't expecting this stupid bilingual Canadian keyboard. It's really difficult to use and I was under the impression that I would receive the same keyboard as depicted on the website. Kind of feel a little scammed. My friend is a lawyer and he said they can't show me one thing and ship me another without telling me. I called Lenovo and they told me all they could do is take the computer back but it would be impossible to get the US keyboard. I find that hard to believe since my Macbook which I bought in Canada doesn't have this stupid keyboard layout. And if I went to buy a new macbook right now, I wouldn't get shafted with this either.

My biggest issue with the keyboard is the character repeat rate. After I put the computer to sleep, the character repeat rate gets all messed it. I have to go back to the keyboard settings and set it back to low, apply, and then set it to high to get it to come back. I cannot begin to explain how annoying it is to wait for the stupid computer to backspace 10-20 characters. Is anyone else having any issues with theirs? When I google searched the problem, it seems to be inherent in other Lenovo models but I can't find a way to fix it and it's driving me nuts.

Also, does anyone find that scrolling on Firefox with the touchpad is super choppy? On IE, it moves perfectly but on Firefox it's choppy and annoying. I don't understand why it's like this. Honestly, it's little annoyances like this that are making me really pissed for buying this computer.

Yeah I had that keyboard repeat problem after a hibernation or something once...only happened the one time though. It was annoying.

Regarding the audiophile question: it's pretty average at best. A bit of white noise which is made worse when enabling the dolby software equalizer / settings. Any serious listening on this machine with my Westones, Beyers or AKGs will always result in hooking up my USB DAC + Amp.

I seem to be getting the automatic dim flicker when I am on battery power even though I turned off adaptive brightness totally, and I also have the same problem of the key repeat rate. It seems to go back to stock speed after I return from sleep mode even when the key repeat rate is still set on high. Any ideas on how to fix these issues?

it may allow for better airflow but that eff you get is very minimal. opening the rest of the grill up, since you won't have any filters on the grill, can allow for stocking up more dusts which is what you don't want l. even if you do put up a filter, that will just water down the airflow even more which makes it even more pointless. so the most practical way is just to leave it sealed

I'm thinking of reformatting and doing a clean install. As I've been reading that's a little bit trickier than I expected, but it is honestly driving me crazy... because sometimes it does it and sometimes it doesn't. Do you use Firefox? How does it work for you?

Although it is counter intuitive, try turning off "Use hardware acceleration when available". The setting is in Preferences/Advanced; General tab. If that works, then there are some Firefox settings you can tweak.

Thought I would pitch in my review, which I just posted on the Y50 Thread:

Well, here I am, finally typing on my Y50 Touch (#...1835).

    Pros: everything but one thing

Cons: the one thing everybody keeps talking about.

First of all, I think it's worth mentioning that the keyboard is glorious. It is the most comfortable and accurate-feeling keyboard I've ever used on a laptop. That's a big deal, to me. Some people complained of missed keys but that hasn't happened to me, even when I try to replicate by lightly pressing only a corner. Just fantastic. Wow.

The trackpad is ok. Took me awhile to understand that it's built around "touch" functionality, and is meant to be tapped, rather than clicked.

The speakers, for a laptop, are mind-blowing. They are easily better than most cheap home stereos; obviously won't replace any real sound system or something expensive, but they are punchy, crisp, and loud, which is something I've never experienced on a laptop.

The temps are cool, even when gaming. I ran Saints Row 4 on max settings, 1080p for 30 minutes and didn't experience anything more than a mild warmth in the gaming key area (note the word "warm", not "hot"). Gameplay was smooth as silk, out of the box, other than some screen tearing ("max settings" = everything cranked to max but v-sync off). I don't own Crysis 3, Watch Dogs, or Metro Last Light (although I thought about the last one, given the Steam sale today).

Performance is fantastic, best I've experienced on a laptop (I've never owned any raid-stacked Alienware monstrosity). This, despite the stock hybrid. The hybrid is pretty good! Not a throw-away component at all, though certainly not as fast as an SSD. All for $1408 after tax, minus another $90 as compensation for having to wait a month.

And yet...sigh...I think I'm sending it back tomorrow or the next day :(

In fact, I already have the shipping labels, so I'm pretty sure I'm forced to return even if I changed my mind. The display is just that bad. It works, and it even looks nice (average nice, not top-end nice) if you look at it from a precise and unforgiving angle. Outside of that extremely precise viewing angle, the colors wash out and shift, and the legibility of everything (especially in terms of the whole gamma/brightness/contrast thing) is compromised. It is a mild nuisance that I do not want to put up with for YEARS. My old laptop, a five year old Dell M1530, has a better screen than this and it isn't even 1080p! I'm currently sitting just right, with the screen tilted back just right, and everything positioned just right, so that the screen looks really nice, and I'm sitting here wishing that it looked this nice without much fuss. If the screen had been a good TN, I wouldn't have even cared about IPS. It's just not something I want to deal with for an extended period of time.

I'll keep my eye out for a good deal on the 4k Y50 Touch, because I will truly miss the performance and style of this machine.

For what it's worth, I do not own a nice desktop monitor to compare to this, and I can't see much of a problem with color accuracy (then again, I don't know what to look for; I'm guessing this is sort of an audiophile kind of thing, where casuals don't see a meaningful difference without having screens right up next to each other) but the washed out viewing angle problem, where the optimal experience requires unforgiving steadiness and precision, is a deal-breaker.

But this keyboard though sdfkjsghiughpi;hsdo;kldmsfjkvndfvsd ahhhhh nom nom nom

    :(

EDIT: thought I would mention that I am no audiophile, but I do not detect any static or popping or hissing or white noise whatsoever, even at max volume, with or without headphones. Seems my system was spared some of the problems other people are experiencing (missed keystrokes, problematic audio jacks, game optimization issues).

It's actually really easy. After finding the Windows 8 or 8.1 ISO (preferably the latter), download the Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool (quick search on google). Start that, find the ISO, plug in the flash drive and start the copy process. After it's on the flash drive, go to your laptop into the BIOS settings. Go to the Boot tab and change Boot Mode to Legacy Support. Make sure that USB Boot is enabled. Press F10 to save and exit. Once the computer is off, press the key next to the power button and go to Boot Menu. Choose your flash drive (should say USB HDD to the left). Go through the process and you're done. Just make sure you stop by the Lenovo site and download the Windows 8.1 drivers. Download all of the drivers and you should be good to go.

Tried that, as well as safe mode. Doesn't help. It's really weird. IE works fine.

Anyone having extreme difficulty getting games to use the 860M instead of integrated graphics after a clean install? I can force it for some games, but others like TF2 absolutely refuse to run on the 860M. The nvidia panel isn't much help because any changes aren't saved.

ive been up for nearly 3days now just doing the clone to ssd, then clean install. ended up being way more complicated then i ever though possible but now that its all done it was so worth it.

after i cloned to my ssd which took way to much time, acronis wasnt working correctly, used todo backup but then i was having constant hangs after installing the ssd, having to manually shut down a ton. today i found the correct link for the iso which wasnt straightforward either as there is so many options available. once i had the iso i used a program called Rufus that turned my 8gb thumb drive into a boot drive using the iso. From there inside of windows you go to the power button on the apps screen, then hold shift when selecting restart, when restarting it gives you an option to boot from media like usb and the install starts and your good to go. it was not necessary to change anything in the bios as rufus has an option to create the volume in gpt uefi format. I also never needed to input generic windows key during installation, and never needed to input my oem key after it was finished so got lucky there.

my battery problem is weird to say the least, i know its not related to the clean install because the problem cropped up earlier today prior to beggining the install. when the battery was at 0% i decided to do the generic powerdown>disconnect power cable, disconnect battery> hold power button for 30 secs> put everything back together.

after turning back on my battery was up to 2% but it is not updating its charge dynamically still. throughout the afternoon i have been installing drivers and other programs to doing frequent restarts, and everytime i restart the battery is at a higher and higher %, just that its not reflecting its actual load % during use. going to try the battery calibration once i hit 100% and see if that fixes the problem.

if you need the link where i found the correct iso for our oem windows 8.1 just pm me and ill direct you where to go.

That's fine, as long as it is a legal download. Our forum rules are very strict when it comes to piracy and anything illegal, stating the following:

Personally I think Microsoft should provide Win8 and 8.1 ISOs for public download, as they do Win7. They have the Product Key as protection. But so far they don't see it that way. And we don't want to attract the attention of Microsoft's lawyers here.

They do offer it for public download through their upgrade program.
Not sure if the Y50 key will work but its worth a try and its legal.
