Thank you. I believe that page will just give you the Update installer, not ISOs -- although there is reportedly a way to lure an ISO from it. Still, I would much prefer a clean public download like the good old Digital River ones for Win7.
Of course my point was merely that other more entrepreneurial ways to obtain Microsoft's copyrighted software are not permissible topics on NBR.
Enough about that. Tell us more about your Y50s please![]()

Actually its a full bootable ISO file. I use it to do fresh installs on my builds. As in starting off with a formatted HDD/SSD and use the ISO from the upgrade to do the install. When prompted it will ask if you want the ISO file at which point you can save it or it can create a bootable usb flash drive for you.
-
Indeed, I got an ISO from Microsoft when I bought my Win8 upgrade, but was under the impression that getting an ISO for Win8.1 required a few hoops with Microsoft's update installer. (I never tried that because I updated to 8.1 and never got around to clean install it.) If that is not the case, then all the better, and even less reason to discuss "alternative" sources. Thanks again.

I just received my lonovo y50, i was just wondering what should i uninstall in terms of bloatware? and how do i calibrate the screen + make the text less blurry. Thanks
and any first starting out tips?
-
I do a fresh install with every machine I get. It's a little work but totally worth it. You need a colorimeter to calibrate your screen, but you can manually adjust some settings in the Intel graphics settings. As for the text, the quickest way to fix that is to right click the desktop and hit screen resolution. click make text and other items larger and smaller. check let me choose one scaling level... medium 125 percent always works for me. This has worked for all 15" 1080p panels in the past, for me. 13" panels I think I choose 150 percent. Hope this helps.

So I'm about to do a fresh install. Created my UEFI boot drive using a windows 8.1 iso and rufus. Has anyone noticed any gains after doing the fresh install?
-
No bloatware is the immediate gain. I don't care much for all the bells and whistles that manufacturers add. It usually slows things down and probably takes more battery up somehow, depending on the app.

Guys I have both an anti-glare chimei model and an anti-glare auo model. The chimei model is terrible compared to the auo model. It looks a lot more washed out and the whites look like yellows. The auo model, however, is an okay display. It is much more usable than the chimei one. Iff you guys would like, I can post some comparison pictures so you guys can see for yourselves.
Also, do you guys know how to make the right click function tapping the trackpad with two fingers, I just came from a mac and I really miss that feature.Oranjoose, Dannemand and SwarmTroll like this. -
Those of you who are returning, are they giving a full refund? There's mention of a restocking fee on Lenovo's website.
-
It depends. I've returned laptops in the past with no restocking fee applied.
It's much easier if they made a mistake, then it's their fault and no restocking fee applies. It can depend who you're talking to.
For example, if you bought from one of the retailers who said it was an IPS display you can very legitimately say it was not as advertised and get a full refund.
If you bought from Lenovo Canada, you can probably get a full refund, as they are advertising a standard US keyboard yet you received the Canadian bilingual one (in Canada there are strict laws regarding misleading advertising).
It will also depend on the consumer protection laws in effect in your country. -
I can officially post here. My order shipped from best buy this morning. Should be here soon. Excited!
-
Does anybody have the AUO screen in a non-touch base model? (Is that possible/offered? If so where did you purchase it?) Hard to keep it all straight! It would be great if someone made a spreadsheet, lol.
-
People who are returning your Y50s, what are you going to get instead?
-
Yes, some people have gotten the non-touch, matte version with the AUO panel.
-
< Yes, some people have gotten the non-touch, matte version with the AUO panel. >
Do you happened to remember where they purchased it? -
I do, I got it from Klick Online on Amazon.
-
Yay, thank you SensualLettuce! I don't know if they received ALL AUO screens but I wonder how it was determined... when did you place your order/when did it ship?
-
No problem! I ordered it on June 3rd and it shipped the next day.
-
is anyone else getting an issue where the screen randomly dims and after a minute it goes back to normal brightness?
-
Starburst,
I also have the auo screen on the 1080 matte. I purchased it from lenovo Canada online. -
They are giving me a full refund, but only because I was smart enough to take screen shots of the chat in which I was told it wouldn't be a problem, and made a subsequent sales rep email me the same thing. I even recorded one of the calls. Otherwise, yeah, a HUGE 15% of purchase restocking fee, which is just awful.
-
wow lol I would have thought you were trying to expose them for a crime or something lmao

Can any owners of the Y50 tell how to easily remove that giant sticker on the bottom left of the laptop?
-
Those of you who aren't returning it. How has getting used to the screen been?
Some people are making it sound like complete garbage but do the color issues cause any real problems for non-designers? -
Wow I just realized Lenovo is selling a cheaper version of the 4K Y50. Only $1330.
-
You know, despite what everyone's been saying, I have to imagine AAA games a year or two from now will take advantage of 4gb GDDR5, especially since consoles have 8 gigs of VRAM to play with. I feel like 4gb is the wiser option for those of us who plan on keeping the laptop for 4-5 years.
-
I know you're addressing those who aren't returning it, but I'll chime in anyway since I'm still on it (sending it back tomorrow). I only notice problems when I move my head around or adjust in my seat; the sweet spot is like that of the 3DS. The color does seem a little less vibrant than it should, a little paler...but as a non-designer, I don't really notice. It is the *minor* gamma/color shifting that happens every time I lean forward or shift around or move my head - it's not that the screen is obviously ugly all of the sudden, it's that the little shifts are incessantly there, always subtly annoying you. My wife, however, IS a professional designer and she just outright despises the screen for its lack of color. She showed me that weird stock "hold screen" Windows 8 has - you know, the one that looks like a ton of ribbons of different colors, or like one of those sand art things - on her tablet so I could compare it to the Y50, and it was indeed pretty awful. The graininess I saw in certain videos and pictures that I ignorantly just accepted (as if it was supposed to look like that) on my Y50 was non-existent on the tablet.
The Y50 is AWESOME, and I've decided that I definitely will get the 4k model because I love the build so much. The only question is whether I'll hold off for touch or just order the non-touch. I actually am one of those who like the feature, but only on screens stiff enough that they don't bounce during use. The Y50 screen is SUPER springy, making touch sort of difficult. -
do you mean the graininess from the matte finish or the display itself? I have an HTC one and nexus 7 2013 that have amazing displays but I was fine with my last sub par laptop. an Asus s46cm. the viewing angles were average on it but the colours were definitely not there.

I have the glossy Y50 Touch, not the matte. My 5.5 year old Dell M1530's screen is better than this.
-
Let's hope Lenovo offers more models with 4K. Two models on opposite sides of the spectrum is pretty stupid.heibk201 likes this.

Anyone know of special deals coming out for the Y50? I'd much rather spend $1000 than $1249 + tax
-
Uh... Take your fingernail and push one of the corners until you can pull on it, then pull the thing off? It's not like it's glued to the laptop.
-
The base Y50 is $1149 on the Lenovo site.
I doubt you'll get much better pricing until they start liquidating them to make room for next year's model.
This price point is already very good given the specs.
You can get a Y50 model for under $1000 on Amazon or Newegg I think - it has the i5 CPU. -
I have just received mine today (touch model with auo36ed panel), I regularly use 3 monitors 2 tn + 1 ips, I have no problem with the y50's tn display. At first I was concerned like you but after using it today I don't see what the fuss is about apart from it not being ips. (maybe che mei panel is worse?)
-
As has been mentioned numerous times, the Chi Mei panel appears to be much worse.
And it isn't just the colour reproduction. One of the biggest issues with the CMN panel is the (apparently) horrendous viewing angles.
Anecdotal evidence suggests those with the AUO panel are more content than those with the CMN display.
I don't mean to be "that guy", but this has been mentioned so many times in this forum, I don't know why people keep asking or bringing this subject up.
1) Yes, many people have issues with the display, to the point where some of them returned the laptop for that one reason alone
2) Not everybody is that unhappy with their display, some are perfectly content with it
3) The Chi Mei panel appears to be the worst offender - the AUO panel seems to be acceptable to most (but not all)
4) It would be nice if people used the "search" function, rather than asking a question that's been answered numerous times -
According to reviews so far, yes the Chimei panel is much worse than the AUO panel for having a yellow tint and washed out colours.
Weird that there's no Y50 with BOE panel though. -
I received my touch model from best buy yesterday and here is a quick review of the cons.
- The JBL speakers arent all that
-Computer came with a ton of bloatware including Mcafee
-Soft White Noise through audio jack, I can even hear that same white noise through my TV via HDMI
-No damn equalizer for the audio. If there is one I haven't found it yet. The bass is lacking
-Not easy to upgrade drivers. How do I update my Nvidia drivers?! -
So the vanilla driver downloaded from nvidia.com is not installing without tricks or modifications?

I posted about a problem i am having with my new y50 on the lenovo forums, havnt gotten response so thought id post here to see what i can find before i have to send it back. below is a copy/paste of what i posted in the other forum:
hello,
received my new y50 a few days ago and began seting it up. the first few hours it was working fine. battery charged up to the full 100%, i then disconected the power cord to let the battery drain down to about 20%. i then plugged it back in and shut the computer down left it charging overnight. this is when the problems started.
waking up the next day i turn it back on to see that the battery is only at 21%. no mater how long i left it charging it did not change from 21%. So i decide to unplug it again to let it fully discharge. while unplugged it ran for another ~hour all the time staying at 21% until i finally shut off out of nowhere.
plugged in the cord and turned it back on, battery shows 0% plugged in, charging. but it never gains any % charge just stuck there. i do some reading online and decide to do the generic power down, unplug power cord and remove battery, hold power button for 30 seconds, then reconnect everything and power up. When it boots up the battery indicator now shows 2% and over the course of the next 10-12 hours it increased by mabe 30% more. the indicator NEVER changes its percent the only way to see the change in the charge is to shutdown/restart.
today is the third day and after many hours of use i got stuck at around 76% (only reaching this number by restarting every few hours to get a new updated battery charge%) since it stayed stuck at 76% for a while i went for the more hardcore fix ive seen online:
power down> unplug power cord>remove battery>plugin power cord and startup on power cord only>uninstalled the microsoft acpi-compliant control method battery driver>shut down>re-installed battery>plugged in cord and restarted. the driver then automatically re-installed itself and brings me to where i am now.
now a few hours since doing that im up to 83% charge, but same problem remains the only way to update the charge % is by restarting/shutdown and occasionally i can remove the power cord and plug it back in while computer is on and it will update.
Any advice or suggestions on what to do, the 2 main problems i see are:
1. battery charge % doesnt update dynamically, requires power down of some form to update it
2. over 24 hours of being 'plugged in,chargin' just to charge ~80%
Since then i have managed to get it up to 100%, but my problems still exists. there is no dynamic updating of the battery icon, it requires a restart/shutdown/ or occasionally something like switching power modes that have a big difference in screen brightness to refresh the icon.
if i unplug my y50 for ~20ish minutes it will still say 100% remaining the whole time. then when plugging back in + restart the icon will update and ill have about 90% (plugged in and charging) but it takes maybe 2 hours just to charge that 10% i lost. not to mention i have to do some kind of refresh (restart/shutdown/let screen turn off due to inactivity) something to get the indicator to update.
anyone have a suggestion of a troubleshoot i havnt tried yet? -
Lenovo's website has that it will take 3-4 weeks for shipping... I wonder if that means they will all come with AUO or BOE screens since they are restocking from the plant.

You have to read the whole post. He goes through the process. If you look at the link, he posts a link to a file that you need to download and replace. Make sure you download the International version, not the English version. Also make sure that the file is saved as an inf, not a txt.

Google around for some coupons.
I literally searched "Lenovo Y50 Coupons Canada" and found a $50 coupon on retailmenot.
Combined it with the Pricing Error discount + Student discount and got my base non-touch model at exactly $990. -
I do not have the laptop yet. But I hate it when a specific model is blocking the vanilla driver and requires signed ones. This is why I am asking.
-
It requires very little. Just disable driver signing, put that file in the extracted folder, then run the setup located there. That's all it takes.
-
Of course, it would all be much easier if Lenovo did what most other manufacturers do - let us do whatever we want with the laptops we paid good money for.
-
So in this case Lenovo, which has a very good name for NOT doing such nonsense, currently requires a signed driver for absolutely no reason.
The only reason that pass from my mind for doing this, is that the 860M is not fully supported yet from the latest stable official driver and this is why they required the Lenovo signed driver. I really hope this is the case and it will change going forward. -
Good name for not doing this kind of stuff? Guess white listing only certain WiFi cards contributed to that
-
Lool good point, nobody is perfect. Generally speaking thought they have done good job with driver support.
-
Where do you guys update your drivers? lenovo website or like intel website for internet card, nvidia for graphic card?
I encounter some internet drops with current driver(17.0.0.34), I found a newer driver version 17.0.3 on intel website, I just don't know if I shoud update with this driver
