Thanks a lot for the tips guys, it looks like I got to the bottom of it. I used WinDirStat and it looks like these two files are the culprits - 'pagefile.sys' (48gb) and 'hiberfil.sys' (12.7gb).

I see that the files are related to RAM availability and hibernation respectively. Will these file eventually size themselves back down, or is there something I'll have to do to manually shrink them to acceptable sizes?

    Hibernation file - probably not.
Page file - try rebooting the laptop then check again, it should shrink automatically.

Well, here all FN keys are working in legacy mode with no problems. Keyboard backlight, power management as well. Really don't think it's necessary changing to UEFI now.
I'm now having some problems with the nvidia graphics card that is not working. I try to change the priority in nvidia control panel but when i save, close, and reopen the panel, the settings didn't change! I simply can't set my gtx 860m to start with the game. Any ideas?

This is most likely the combination of Windows 8 + Nvidia beta drivers, lots of complains all over the Internet, here is one example. No conclusive solution anywhere though..
    I can confirm it's working on Windows7.

It's not just the beta. Even the official lenovo 332.50 nvidia driver isn't working... So, are you using windows 7 on the y50? are you having problems with it? Did you downloaded the drivers on lenovo support site, or elsewhere?

At this point I wouldn't trust Lenovo's drivers either. My hope is Nvidia and official whql drivers, we'll see.
    Yes, Pro x64.
None so far except the optimus-not-working thing but at least I could force the system to use the GPU.
Everything from Lenovo but after that I updated some of them with more recent version, mostly Intel drivers.

LOL Windows made your page file 50 GIGS??? That's insane... Your page file only needs to be a couple gigs if that... I can't find any documents at microsoft on how to adjust the page file in windows 8, only windows 7 and earlier...
On 7 it's under system control panel -> advanced system settings -> advanced -> settings button under "performance" -> advanced -> "Change" button under "virtual memory"

You're still on Windows8? Did you check if C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvapps.xml is set to "Read Only"? If so remove that attribute.

    Alright then try this:
Unable to change NVidia control panel 3d settings - Microsoft Community
Read the whole thread, not just the first response from Microsoft.

Unfortunately there are many possible workarounds but nothing definitive probably because every case is different so I don't know what would work in your case. There are many factors that may be causing the issue like if you have an external monitor connected or what OS version you use(8? 8.1? x86 or x64?), driver version etc.If the above doesn't work I suggest checking google and trying different workarounds. You could also try to contact Lenovo or Nvidia..
By the way you haven't by any change modified the "Switchable graphics"(or whatever it was called) option in the BIOS, have you?

Yeah, I'm pretty shocked it could blow up that large.. I rebooted yesterday, and started it up again this morning, and there was no change to either file.. Should I give it time to see if the page file reduces itself on its own, or should I manually try to shrink it? I'd rather not mess with it if I don't have to, but also don't want 50gb of wasted storage..

I would just set a fixed size of 8 or so GB. That should be a very safe value. How much ram do you have?

If you are using all your ram and 8 GB of swap, you have a program that is memory leaking and you're in trouble anyway.

I have 16GB of ram. I'm pretty much certain the file grew to that size on a night I was playing a few hours of Diablo 3. I had gotten an error message during gameplay saying I should close D3 due to a lack of memory (an issues that has been raised in earlier posts here). And then it was the next morning I noticed the missing free space. The Battle.net launcher was still open in the background while I was playing - not sure if that has anything to do with the problem.

No, i didn't change the Switchable graphics on BIOS. I'm using Windows 8.1 64 bits and i'm using an external monitor with hdmi. I'm able to play with the gtx 860m in that way: right mouse button on the executable of the game and choose to start with the nvidia card instead of the integrated. But still, i can't change absolutely nothing in the nvidia control panel.

Some reports indicate this problem might appear when using an external monitor with hdmi, check the last post here.
Obviously you can't switch to DVI so try to disconnect the external monitor and then try to change settings in Nvidia control panel, lets see if that works..

I have managed to fix it! Just download the Display Driver Uninstaller that was mentioned in the Unable to change NVidia control panel 3d settings and uninstall the Nvidia Driver and reinstall it later!
Now i can change the settings in the nvidia control panel!

There's one last question now: Using this Display Driver Uninstaller has disabled the automatic driver installation for Windows 8. Do you think this is needed to stay enabled? Or it would bring more problems? I'm preoccupied in letting my laptop actualized.

No idea, I guess you can enable it again. You could also update manually so you can control what updates to install(I assume that's why DDU disabled the auto update). For example what if Windows find and installs an updated driver which turns out to be worse than your current one?
    Its up to you.

I think i'll let it disabled, and i recommend it to everyone that has the Lenovo Y50. The reason? Download the drivers from the lenovo support, because they are the ones that actually work and was tested on your notebook. Automatically downloading new drivers with the windows system could make things worse. The only one i recommend downloading separated is the Nvidia Driver. It will work very well and it's the newest.

this is a repost from the other thread, but i think it could help someone,

    Hi everyone!
I just got my laptop, the y50 with a 512 ssd, 4gb vram, and the 17-4710. This thread really helped me make my decision to buy this laptop.
Now for my review. The screen is actually not that bad at all, and my viewing angles from side to side are fine, although up and down does result in washed out colors. still, there is a very wide angle in which i can turn the screen before quality is really affected. this may be because I have the auo screen, though. the keys feel a bit squishy, but you quickly get used to them. As for the numpad, the 0 is annoying for the first day or two, but you also get used to it really fast.

One thing that I was used to from my old laptops were the ability to control the back lighting and sound with fn shortcuts. I was disappointed when i saw on this thread that the y50 didnt have this, but apparently nobody reads the user manual... fn + up or down increases or decreases backlight level, and fn + right or left increases and decreases the volume. Im not sure if this was mentioned in the thread, but I hope that this was helpful to someone

Glad you can tolerate it. I had the AUO and returned it because the screen was bad.

Notebookcheck also did their objective tests (contrast, viewing angles, colour gamut) and found the screen was pretty bad - worse than the panel on the Y510p.

I'm pretty sure people knew about fn + arrow keys. What the Y50 is missing is keys for mute and play/pause.

Just received my y50 today, took 17 days to get here. Mine came with an AUO screen. Haven't fiddled with the display settings yet.

The laptop in and of itself looks sleek. Haven't had any issues with the touchpad/keyboard and it runs pretty damn silently. I can also confirm that the Nvidia 340.43 beta works perfectly just like installing any other driver.

I'd really like to do a clean install of Windows 8.1 (core version, not pro) but I'm not sure how (I've never done one before). I was able to obtain my Windows 8.1 key via Belarc Adviser but it wouldn't work with the Windows 8.1 Setup as it's not a retail key.

How exactly did you guys do your clean installs?

    What model did you buy?

Are we seeing any trend as to when the AUO screen is put on versus the Chi Mei one?

P.S: This and the other y50 thread have been excellent!

Which Y50 variant did you end up purchasing? (59421855, 59421863 etc)

Will the AUO screen take care of the display complaints?

I have ordered the 59421863. Ordered it on July 15 and it surprisingly shipped out on July 17 which has me a little worried :)

Also, they now have a new Y50 variant (59416738) which shows dispatch time of more than 5 weeks and priced at $1,519. Minor change in processor but apart from that there seems to be no other change so unsure of why it is commanding a premium price.

Hey guys I just received my Y50 touch AUO screen. I have to say the laptop is better than I expected the screen is not the best but also isn't the worst. I fixed the blurriness of chrome and other windows applications. I am planning to return this laptop probably and getting the the UHD one. Here is the question I have though. When I tried downscalling the resolution of the y50 FHD to 1366 x 768 the icons looked blurry as well as everything on the screen even after scalling DPI to 100%. Will the same thing happen with the y50 UHD? If I want to use the UHD in 1920 by 1080 will icons also look blurry etc...?

The text appears a bit blurry and not so crisp. I compared it to my other laptop which has 1366 x 768 screen and my older laptops screen looks much more crisp. My scaling is 100 I don't know why it's acting like this. I wanna get a UHD version but worried about the scaling problems

Sorry about that, I am still clinging to dear life to windows 7. So torrenting the ISO might be the best way for you right now. Found a good blerb and link. But it has the HASH MD5 so you can know its the legit Microsoft image. - It comes from a MSDN / TechNet so if you know someone with an account they can download it for you.

You can't download from Microsoft's page, if you have Windows 8.1 OEM product key.

    1) Download Windows 8.1 64-bit ISO image.

Windows 8.1 with Update (multiple editions) (x64) - DVD (English)
    Release Date: 4/2/2014
    File Name: en_windows_8.1_with_update_x64_dvd_4065090.iso
    File Size: 3924 MB
    SHA1: 4652DC6EBFEBE02C6A63E167C36E3FAEDFB93999

    2) Install Windows 8.1

You have an OEM computer with UEFI firmware (BIOS) embedded Windows 8.1 product key. The Windows 8.1 installer (when you install Windows 8.1 from DVD/USB) will detect the product key from UEFI firmware (BIOS) and activate Windows 8.1 automatically.

Solved How to install Windows 8.1 with 8.1 OEM key?

Torrenting things which have product keys is perfectly legal. Remember, torrenting is not illegal, distributing things for profit is.

Anyway, I belong here now. Just received my UHD Touch Y50.

    Items of note:
MS offers student or military discount of 10%, end price after tax was 1450
    Wireless card is intel 7260
It is debloated, only having settings app and a few others

Let me know what you think of the extra plastic for the touch screen( overall screen impressions) and wither you see yourself wanting more than 2gb in video ram. I am not a gamer and the 48hz doesn't bother me to much. But then again only having HDMI and not display port worries me a bit.

I am being so indecisive of just biting the bullet and gettting it, but i think i can wait for the asus gx500 to come out even though we all know it is probably going to cost more. But then again m3 PCIE Sata and a Display Port are very nice. And just what they write about the screen " a pre-calibrated IPS display with wide color gamut and Quantum Dot technology"

I was the same, but got sick of waiting for the GX500. I bet you money it will be the same type of release as Lenovo, 1080p will be around 1700 or so and 4k will be 2000. Getting a GX500 configured the same as the Y50 will probably be +5-800 dollars or so, it just seems like that's how they are doing it. And lets be honest, in 3 or 4 months when it finally is for sale the 860m will be getting old, might as well buy now lol.

The digitizer seems very good, edge to edge and very solid. No effect on screen quality, which is simply amazing. I use an LG 2.5k IPS (same as the macs) so am comparing to that.

That's awesome, You are making my decision slightly easier since the mac screens are what I would be comparing it to.

What version of Windows 8.1 is it? Because if its PRO that might make me want it even more.

Didn't know there was a general windows thread, and yeah I got one of those returned Razer blades. Zero signs of use. Wasn't even on my radar due to pricing, but at 1200 it was a steal and a half

Hello guys, new to the forum.
Just wanted to know about the boost freq of the CPU. From what i was reading the boost frequency is only achieved for short amounts of time and when the core temp goes higher than 65 degrees C it goes back to base clock...2.4Ghz. I am buying this laptop for BF4 and i know this game to be very CPU dependent. Can someone explain if there is a slolution to this, any BIOS update or something like that. I really find it unnecessary to back down to base clock at only 65C.
Did anyone fiddled with the vcore of the CPU? Maybe make it a little lower and it will boost a bit higher due to lower temperatures.

Guys, do you recommend changing something in the nvidia control panel? Like ,for example, "the power management" from "adaptive" to "prefer maximum performance". And the PhysX configuration set to the gtx 860m only?. And maybe the "multi display / mixed gpu acceleration" to "single display performance mode"?
I had a Desktop computer, so, i don`t know how to set the nvidia settings on a laptop. I want it to use its maximum power when i'm playing, but when im not i would like the laptop to work without wasting too much battery.

Two questions I haven't found answers to yet:

    1. Is it possible to set one of the function buttons as a mute button? F4, 7, 8, & 12 are blank.
    2. Has anyone found a better touchpad driver? Does it have to be from Synaptics?
