    Hey Guys,

My Y50 came in on Thursday, so I will be able to add to those that are answering questions about the laptop. I will post my first impressions tomorrow.

Just a few questions to those that have theirs already.

    1. For those of you who got a model with an SSD, what kind of SSD was it? I ordered a model with a 256GB SSD, but plan on selling it (swapping for a 2TB HDD). Just want to have an idea of what I'll be selling exactly.

    2. Does anyone have any recommendations on sleeves for the Y50? I'm picking up the Touch Screen model, so it may be a bit thicker? I'm hoping to find a vertical sleeve with no zippers.

Yes but not..natively, you must use a third-party tool. Check that guide. I can confirm it works however I was unable to assign a hotkey from the type "Fn+key" combo, I assigned it to F12 instead.
Edit: hmm it's not working all the time though, something is not right.
If you got a machine with Synaptics touchpad then yeah, you must use Synaptics driver.

I have a Synaptics Driver and I have not had a single problem with my touch movements yet. It scrolls well and does all the windows movements flawlessly.

Hey guys, I was having some slight issues with framerate on BF3 and even BF2 Bad Company. I get this random 1 second extreme frame rate drop, (down to 8-10 sometimes). I have optimized the games using the Nvidia experience, but that still has not helped. Does anyone else have this problem and if so, what is the solution that you came up with that fixed it?

easy to do with AutoHotkey - Auto Hot Key - to remap that key to another one, there is a key for mute in windows system.

Whenever I calibrate my display via windows my Intel Card resets it whenever I restart my laptop. Does anybody know how to fix it? I can calibrate it through the Intel Control Panel, but it doesnt seem to look the same.

Thanks for the replies, guys. I found KeyTweak through the help file for AutoHotKey and used that instead. It works with fullscreen applications and doesn't require a shortcut on the desktop.

I uninstalled the Synaptics driver because it was so jittery; I couldn't click without it moving. I installed a generic driver and it was a lot more stable but it didn't have the Windows 8 gesture features, so I restored to the old one. Although I just checked the device manager, and in the Details tab it says "Generic driver installed - value: true" which has me confused. I have two-finger scrolling and other Windows 8 features... maybe I'm just misunderstanding.

I have the 17.0.14.78 version from 1/24/2014. There's got to be a newer one, right?

So I have been using my new Y50 touch for the past 2 days and the audio was ok when using headphones but now there is a white noise in the background when sound is above 1. So I tried doing as suggested earlier in this thread which is to uninstall the Realtek High Def Audio and the sound went away but ow there is no sound so how do I download the windows default audio drivers? Can someone please provide the link. Thanks.

The model number is 59421861. I ordered from Lenovo directly, and I live in Canada.

In truth, I was actually expecting to receive an AUO screen (and am glad that I received one). Every single post that I've seen from people who have ordered from Lenovo Canada (regardless of model) has received an AUO screen. And believe me, I've read a tonne.

Not sure if this is entirely coincidental or if there's something more to it.

Changing the video mode to either picture/cinema and upping the brightness really does help. I also tried fiddling with the contrast/gamma but wasn't quite pleased with the end result so I just left them at default settings.

I also played a bit of Far Cry 3 the other day on maxed out settings and I'd average at about 40 FPS, sometimes dipping into the mid-thirties or early-fifties.

I really don't know what to do with all of these partitions though. My y50 came with 7 of them and I really don't want to mess anything up by accident (I especially don't want to accidentally get rid of the OKR).

    Hello

i'm interesting this laptop, but i have a two question ?

    1. If I leave the power adapter plugged in all the time, does it use the power from the adapter once the battery is fully charged, like mac books or it's same as regular laptops which overcharge the battery and shorten the battery life?
    2. how about it's cooling system? does it overheat? do I need to use laptop cooler?

    thanks

I recently got my Y50 UHD version and I've been having a problem with the screen colours, specific yellow. I've used the HD Graphics Control Panel to try to optimize the colours as they were horrid from startup and still end up with a non bright green toned yellow. This problem was mentioned earlier by someone, let me know if you know a fix! Thanks.

I mentioned this earlier and have really tried to dial it in. Have not been successful so far. Toning down green helps a bit but found red to be dominate and have to back that off. I am however learning to live with it...until I go to another computer where the yellow is true and then I get OCD all over again.

Also gotta say, there are no viewing angles. The colors and picture stays clear at all angles. The screen shuts off when closing the lid before viewing becomes an issue.

Also, I think I posted this in the other thread, I bought the Timbuk2 Commute 2.0 messenger bag at REI last night. I'm in Monterey just south of the Timbuk2 factory so it made sense. The large size fits the Y50 with room to spare, the medium size doesn't at all. The Command bag fits the Y50 in a medium as well but the Commute had more pockets and I just scavenged the strap off a different bag. Once I find a cross strap and have my lady sew some MOLLE and velcro inside the Commute should be excellent. I plan on grabbing one of those grid-it panels to organize crap inside as well.

I returned it again for the keyboard and touchpad. They again claimed they could replicate the issue. This time they replaced the motherboard which took quite a bit longer then the last repair (which was the keyboard and touchpad). Got it back today - nothing has changed. Still has the keyboard issues and the touchpad doesn't 2-finger scroll. Whatever. I'm done. I guess I will just keep my old dell xps when I want to code, and keep this computer for video editing and what little gaming I do.

Can it be that the intel graphic card on y50 is locked to 48 hz and is permanent ?
no one has been able to resolve the issue till now. A logical explanation is that the intel graphics simply cannot go above 48 hz for a 4k display. If this is true , terrible for all 4k y50 owners.

If you uninstall the intel display driver, the framerate can break the 48Hz. Definitely a software problem.

Edit: I see what you mean now, but looking at other 4k displays, this is not the case.

The driver can go above that for 4k. Other laptops do it just fine. The problem is the panel maker only reported 48Hz as a supported refresh rate to Intel. So that's what Intel put into the driver. It's possible to trick the driver into thinking the panel is different, but that is a very involved process that nobody has attempted yet.

Wow. Been doing some 2.5k x1152 gaming with my Y50 UHD... very impressive results. No overclocking yet and I can still manage to play most new semi-demanding games at high or medium settings. At 1080p I can play them all on high. 4k gets quite choppy; I usually just ignore that.

But what's more impressive is that I have yet to record temps of over 60 degrees C for either the CPU or the 860M. This is no cooler; just sitting on a table. I think I love this machine.

I have some framerate and lately overheating issues. Any help would be greatly appreciated! :)

Yeah, I have the same issue, W7 Pro x64. I thought it's caused by that "feature" of Windows to reduce the sound when it detects "communication activity"(which in my experience could be anything) so I turned that off but its still happening so it might be a different issue. It doesn't bother me that much that's why I didn't continue troubleshooting.

I have another annoying poblem here. The big fan from my Y50 is ticking and having a pulsating workload during low temperatures. When the laptop gets a little more warm when doing a job it starts spinning faster and makes no clicking noise, but when idling it spins very slowly and in pulses and has that anying clicking sound. Please help..!!
I am on Windows 7 and energy manager 1.5.0.16.
The small fan is ok...spining constantly and noiseless.
About the weak cpu boost, any ideeas?

I don't think others have posted word, and unfortunately we've gotten no communication. Actually we followed up again today on the issue but so far there's just been silence - no confirmation on whether they are working on a fix, or don't plan to at all. Wish there was better news.

I finally got my y50 UHD Touch. I love everything about it so far; the sounds is crazy good, typing feels good, the monitor is beautiful, it's slimmer than I expected, and it doesn't feel cheap.

On the other hand... The yellows are absolutely mus-turd. ;D I'm not sure what to do, I'm a graphic artist and bad yellows are not something I want to live with. I really love everything about this computer though and I really don't want to look for a new one... Anyone know of a fix?

Alright so I have had the Touch screen model (16gb ram, 4gb vram, etc) for almost a week and I have to say that I love it. It's the AUO screen and I really actually like it. It's what I expected for a TN screen. Anyways, I was wondering if anyone could help me with two things...

First, the audio sounds great but there is no bass! I'm not expecting anything that's gonna rumble my desk but it really isn't putting out any bass which is weird for a laptop that has a subwoofer. I was wondering if anyone had a solution for this. Perhaps I'm an idiot and just haven't found where to enable it.

Second, has anyone bought a case for it? Ideally I would like one that fits my laptop, the cable, and my mouse, but isn't any larger than needs be. I wouldn't be opposed to a backpack that can keep it safe either, my main concern is just the corners. They aren't really rounded off, so I feel as though while I travel with this thing they may take a beating.

    Any input is great, thanks!

I have the non touch and totally agree about the colors. Try moving the green down a bit, and then slightly back red off using the windows display calibration. The gamma appeared to be pretty good out of the box. Results are not great...not even that good, but better.

Guys, do you recommend changing something in the nvidia control panel? Like ,for example, "the power management" from "adaptive" to "prefer maximum performance". And the PhysX configuration set to the gtx 860m only?. And maybe the "multi display / mixed gpu acceleration" to "single display performance mode"?
I had a Desktop computer, so, i don`t know how to set the nvidia settings on a laptop. I want it to use its maximum power when i'm playing, but when im not i would like the laptop to work without wasting too much battery.

Is the UHD edge to edge glass? Or is that only a touch screen thing.
If so, I feel like edge to edge glass generally just looks better, so I'd be more likely to consider the MS UHD Touch model rather than the regular UHD.
Only problem I have with that is the touch uhd is slightly heavier and only has 256 gb ssd and the 2gb 860m compared to the 512 ssd and 4gb 860m on the non touch uhd.

Did you buy it from the MS Store? because it's advertised as the 2gb version.
Because if that's the case, I can buy it cheaper from them with student discounts (Can you buy the y50 with student discounts?) and then later on upgrade the ssd size.

Mine shows 2GB dedicated 2GB shared, Part number is 2704 0010.

This is from the system information tab on the bottom left of nvidia control panel.

Something cool though, mines been sitting in a bag for two or three days now without being touched or hooked to the charger and its sitting at 76% battery. Better than the macbook pro I had

That would be a 2GB card .. Cheercake did you mistake the 2GB dedicated + 2GB shared as a 4GB card?

Also, has anyone figured out who makes the UHD panel? I'll do the driver hacks to force 60hz refresh, its pretty easy, but I'm not going to do it without confirmation the physical panel is capable
