I can't even get my system (UHD) to show me the panel info. Under Device Manager it just says both my built in and my external monitors are Generic PnP Monitor. Ran the Belarc Advisor and it recognized the model no. of my external display, but still reports the built-in monitor as Generic PnP Monitor. Tried to update the drivers, but it says they're up to date. So I don't even know how to find the manufacturer and model no. of the panel, let alone any specs about it.
-
you are talking about the monitor ID, not the panel, the panel serial number is LTN156FL02. gs60 has LTN156HL01, these two are almost sister panels
gs60 surface temps are cooler than y50? I'm not sure what you are talking about, gs60 runs 70C internally under normal usage and easily 30C externally. unless you are throttling your cpu to like 1.2 ghz I don't see how gs60 can be the kind of cool you are talking about. because y50 turns off turbo beyond 65C, therefore you can't really get the CPU that hot under normal usage. in contrast gs60 doesn't have a limit on turbo until t junction and the C pad is composed of metal rather than rubberized plastic, if you are doing the same thing on both laptops, how you would get y50 hotter than gs60? -
go download hwinfo
-
Make sure you set it to use the 860m and not integrated graphics. Change settings in the nvidia control panel or in game video card settings i believe.
-
You need to use a specialized tool like moninfo or DTD to read the EDID and DTD codes
-
Why are you so adamant that my lenovo is cooler than my msi? Did you come to my house and feel them both? I'm not talking about a slight temperature difference, I'm saying that the lenovo is CLEARLY hotter than the msi, even though running diablo3 on ultra the lenovo gpu hits a max of 70 and the msi gpu hits a max of 73. The keyboard on the lenovo, especially the left side, BURNS, and the msi is still comfortable to use. In other words, despite similar internal temperatures, the surface temperatures of the lenovo are much higher.
If you would do a quick search around the web you'd see that other people have had problems with hot keyboards too, so unless you have anything constructive to add or a solution to either the yellowing display or the hot keyboard please stop trying to tell me how much colder my lenovo keyboard is. I have hands and can tell for myself.
Edit: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-IdeaPad-Y50-Notebook-Review.120215.0.html I've linked the notebookcheck review which you've probably seen already, but it highlights temperatures as high as 60 degrees C on the keyboard under load, which is exactly what I'm experiencing. -
Could you post a screenshot of Moninfo so we can see the exact model and other details?
-
At stores in my country, it's 2550 dollars (1899 euros) for the GS60, and that's the 1080p version which is a matte display (colors are not as vibrant) with a Kepler 860M. Also, the GS60 has horrendous battery life - 2-3 hours based on what I've read, and the notebookcheck review claims that the chassis can reach 70 degrees Celsius, which is plain ridiculous.
The Razer Blade would be perfect, but it costs 3750 dollars (2199 pounds) for the 256 GB model on amazon.co.uk, not counting shipping to my country and the possible lack of warranty. -
Thanks. Here's a screenshot from hwinfo:
Also, is it a problem that it lists my GPU as a GeForce 845M? Is that normal?
Here you go:
-
Seems like a loose/defective flat cable.
Can you take a picture whit your phone and post it here? -
yes notebookcheck gives the surface under max load, under max load gs60 throttles heavily, that's why, if you are playing games or under normal usage, you are either exaggerating or just didn't optimize your settings. your cpu temp should not be hitting high temps if you are just web browsing
nah don't worry about it, hwinfo does that sometimes. if you are still worries you can just check gpuz -
I've said it again and again, internal temps are fine. The cpu stays at anywhere from 30 to 45 degrees while just browsing. The issue is that while browsing the keyboard feels like body temperature, and while gaming it feels like a hot shower. I honestly don't know what else to tell you.

Open your Generic PnP Monitor's properties in Device Manager and then after going to the "Details" tab, select "Hardware IDs".
Just confirmed I have the AUO panel now
-
I believe the glossy and matte panels are the same - one just has a matte coating. Either AUO or CMN displays on the FHD versions.
As pretty much all reviews have touched upon, the FHD displays (especially the matte) have poor colour reproduction, bad contrast and very, very tight viewing angles. -
i had it set to 860m in the nvidia control panel since i bought it. any other ideas? where/what is the game video card settings?
-
does anyone here use the conservative mode provided by lenovo's energy manager?
-
What options are available to you? When I go into the nvidia control panel, I can adjust about next to nothing.

Hi guys, thought I'd stop by and say a few things.
I've owned the 4770 best buy model now for about a month. Personally, I think the touch screen looks great (using photo mode in lenovo settings helps too), and my friend decided to buy the non touch from TigerDirect, which has the CMN panel, and it makes me very sad. If I had gotten that, I would have returned it. It just looks so lackluster. As far as the keyboard goes, I'm used to it and don't really notice missed keystrokes any more. The touchpad, however, still grinds my gears. I never like ones without physical buttons, and I find this one just as difficult to use. I have the AC7260 and have noticed probably 3 times where I felt like it could have been acting up, but who knows if that was the routers fault.. no complaints there. As far as temps, the hottest it has got is playing Skyrim with RealvisionENB at about 45-55 fps is 73*C. Build quality is pretty good, although I don't like how the aluminum from the lid and base overhangs a bit.
All in all, quite impressed with this laptop. Touch screen model looks good, plays games well, and has IMO is a great value. -
on the side, there is a collapsible menu that says 3d settings. there are "adjust image settings with preview," "manage 3d settings," and "set physx configuration". under "manage 3d settings," i have preferred graphics processor as "high-performance nvidia processor".
i also have geforce experience downloaded and have optimized games that way. does that mess up the games or is my graphics card faulty?
starcraft 2 will freeze with only audio playing from time to time and when i minimize and open it again, it will be a black screen with the audio still playing. this happens even when i use the default settings under graphics which significantly lowers the quality compared to what geforce experience recommends in its optimization. csgo also stutters whether i play on the optimized settings or the game's default settings. even league of legends will stutter (not as frequently as cs go or sc2). when the games are not lagging/stuttering, they run smoothly with high fps... please help.m0nk3y96 likes this. -
I use it since the battery's non-removable (I'm used to taking out my battery from my crappy old HP because the CPU was right next to the battery compartment and would heat up like crazy). It's a great feature to be honest, since I game once I'm home from work and I always keep my Y50 plugged in, so the battery doesn't need to be constantly charged to 100%. Though I'm going to have to stop using it in a couple months once I have to start carrying it to my campus.
On another note, does anyone know where to get the Lenovo Settings app other than from the Windows App Store? -
One more question for you guys (this may be better suited for another thread), but how does this CPU handle openGL rendering?
-
I received my y50 a few days ago and besides the display (which I'm intending to replace in the future) and one other issue, I'm loving it so far. The other issue that I have with it is that all text looks extremely small. I've included a few screenshots to show what I'm talking about. Basically unless I put the screen within a foot of my face, I have to by default have a 125% zoom on every website I visit in order to comfortably read regular text. Is there some way I can fix this? I've already disabled the high dpi scaling and increased the scaling level in the display options, but everything I've tried doesn't help; all text still looks extremely small. I know it's not an issue with 1080p displays and Windows 8.1 because my friend has a 1080p laptop with Windows 8.1 and everything looks normal on that laptop. Can anyone shed some light on this issue?
-
does yours come with the AUO Panel?
-
I am having very similar issues as you on my y50 touch. CS:GO, Dayz, Portal 2, LOL(maybe only once per game but really small) all stutter for me from time to time even though my FPS did not drop. Oddly enough, I have L4D2 and Hitman Absolution and those games do not stutter at all. Yes I have everything set to my gpu and battery on high performance
-
I just got the Y50 UHD model and it seems to be a great computer, but I am noticing this strange issue with my taskbar... any solutions?
The triangle to show hidden icons is almost off the bottom of my screen and it really bugs me. -
I posted this in Lenovo forum, and since there was someone who confirmed this so I figure I could do a survey here to see if you guys have these problems with the Y50:
Keyboard response too slow after coming back from hibernation

Hey guys, quick question. Anyone find a UHD video review? I cant seem to find one on youtube or anything.
-
can someone help me with battery indicator calibration? My laptop can run saints row 4 at ultra with full brightness at 0% charge for a very long time. Ive charged it to full and then drained it all the way until it ran out completely. I also used the gauge reset in the lenovo energy manager, but the laptop continues to stay uncalibrated. Can someone help me?
-
Your first one, someone seems to have solved the problem here:
The second, the hard drive spins up because of your power settings turning it off. Go to the power settings, advanced settings, then under Hard Disk, change the "Turn hard disk off after:" time to something later or Never (go below the number 1). -

I got the Y50 with the 4K screen and top specs(16 gb ram, 860m 4gb, ect.) and on civ 5(after setting my windows resolution to 1920X1080 and civ resolution to 1920X1200), I get a lot of lag from any and every size of game I start/play. I get unplayable lag from doing a duel sized game on continents to a huge game on earth. Anything I choose the lag is horrible. Even when I have set all of my video settings in Civ 5 to the lowest, it still lags like before I changed them. After I play for an hour I also start to get warning messages to close Civ 5 due to memory being lost/overused, during this time only 5gb of ram is being used, and it repeats every hour. Now what surprises me the most is that I get stellar frames and performance on BF4 when playing in ultra(average 40), but I get garbage performance on Civ 5. Is there anything that I can do to fix Civ 5 and be able to play it on high settings like so many other lenovo customers can? Also as side note, I have not taken off any of the lenovo bloatware.

Try this. find your shortcut/launcher. if it opens a sort of splash screen, where you click start or change settings or something like that, find the launcher that goes straight to the game and right click, and choose the run with graphics processor > nvidia high performace processor. If theres no splash screen, just do the same thing with the shortcut or main file. it should be default, but maybe that is not the case for your civ? also, your power option might be limiting your speed. try high performance. Hope this helped
-
I think most of the problems we have in games come from the Nvidia drivers. Hopefully the next version will have better support for the GTX860..
The memory problem seems to be a W8/DirectX issue and as far as I know there is no official fix for now, only workarounds.m1ko likes this. -
does anyone here have the microsoft store version? with 4k touch screen? any problems or issues with the unit?
and can the yellow color problem be fixed? or is it a hardware issue?
thanks -
I want to know this as well. Strange how there seems to be no professional reviews of the 4k Y50.
-
I used to get the memory problem but now I switched to the beta drivers from Nvidia's website and the problem has gone away.
-
I have tried to do various things regarding the yellows. I am not convinced it can be fixed. Hope I am wrong. I had an HP Envy with the ORANGE Red's and that was a hardware issue with no fix. Again, hope I am wrong because hooking up to an external monitor clearly shows how bad the yellows are.
-
can you post a picture of them? both the y50 monitor and external monitor?
this is the only thing that is keeping me from buying this laptop -
Being that I bought this laptop (Y50 UHD) for school use; one of my biggest gripes has been the relatively short battery life. I get usually about 2 hours of mixed usage out of a full charge; which really isn't that great.
I found this replacement battery, a 8-cell 46Wh; 46Wh 8 Cell Lenovo Y50 Battery which could potentially solve this problem.
Does anyone have any experience with this battery, the site that sells it; or replacing a laptop battery in general? The process seems simple enough; but I am concerned that the battery won't be compatible or won't perform any better.m1ko likes this. -
Hey, is it at all possible for you to take some photos of your laptop next to your friend's laptop (showing the same images)? A direct screen comparison of the Non-Touch CMN and Touch AUO panels hasn't been done yet and it would be super super useful. It would probably make me feel a lot more lucky with regards to my AUO screen, haha. Strangely, the thing making me wish I had a better screen isn't even a laptop: it's the Samsung Galaxy S5 I bought recently. The 5.1" Super-AMOLED screen on it is so damn good, it is making the previously good Y50 screen look a bit lame. Especially the blacks! I know the Galaxy S5 just has a particularly amazing screen and it is easier to make small excellent screens than big excellent screens, but still. I'm still happy with the laptop overall but am having to fiddle a lot with the screen settings and colour calibration recently. Hopefully I can make the display acceptable in both colourful and dark scenes (boosting the former has destroyed detail in the latter in my attempts so far, so it's an annoying balancing game).
Anyways, there is no way Klick is going to accept a refund from me without at least a massive restocking fee - nice as they were when selling me the product, almost no company would be that accommodating. So I won't be able to order the matte model and do a screen replacement, which I think is the best option. Honestly, even a screen replacement with the Y510p's screen would be an excellent choice. A month ago I was super convinced glossy > matte but now I've really flip-flopped on that too. The matte external monitor I use for work strains my eyes a lot less than the glossy screen on my Y50 when I'm using both for over 3 hours. That said, Touch is kind of a cool feature and all Touch laptops are glossy. So at least I'm happy that my glossy screen has that functionality: glossy Touch is the next best thing after matte and is a lot better than non-Touch glossy screens like the Y50 4K sold on Lenovo's website. -
I've also realized that the screen on my 4-year-old Acer Aspire TimelineX 3820TG, is actually pretty atrocious, lol. Earlier I thought the Y50's screen was pretty good because it was a clear upgrade from my previous screen. But turns out my old screen was legitimately bad and neither one is very good. I'm sort of annoyed at this forum now for getting me to even think about stuff like this, lol.

Not sure if this is of any help to people. Was to me:
Seth L : Thank you for choosing Lenovo Chat.
max hofmeister: hi there
max hofmeister: I have a few technical questions
max hofmeister: before we talk about buying
max hofmeister: with the Y50 UHD, what is the refresh rate?
Seth L: Let me get the right answers
max hofmeister: I have asked previous Chat people and they seem to give out different answers
max hofmeister: some say 60HZ some say 48HZ some say 50 something
Seth L: It's locked at 48
max hofmeister: software or hardware locked?
Seth L: It's a software lock, so technically you could change it, but I worry that a faster refresh wouldn't be supported during any gaming applications
Seth L: I mean, obviously we've locked it for a reason, so beware making alterations.
max hofmeister: now
max hofmeister: thank-you btw
max hofmeister: that is the best answer I have received to date
max hofmeister: and accurate
max hofmeister: 2nd, I heard your Y50 series can ship with Chi Mei or AOU/AUO monitors
max hofmeister: is there anyway to ensure the latter is received as it is 100% better quality
Seth L: No possible way to know
max hofmeister: Is there no way to check what the warehouse stock is?
max hofmeister: because if I got chi mei I would return it the display is terrible!
Seth L: No, the supplies and manufacturing is all in China, so I can't necessarily call and ask
max hofmeister: hmm so only thing to do is return it if you get Chi Mei?
Seth L: It's a bit of a gamble, but for the most part I haven't received any complaints about the Y50's I've sold so far
Seth L: Well, I'll say that if you bust open the bezel or casing to look for branding, you'll probably void the warranty
Seth L: So once again, be careful
max hofmeister: you don't need to
max hofmeister: you can tell by viewing angles alone
Seth L: You seem like you'd be able to tell without doing that, but I need to say it anyway
max hofmeister: oh I see
max hofmeister: http://forum.notebookreview.com/ideapad-essential/741832-y50-thread-635.html
max hofmeister: look on that link
max hofmeister: half way down the page
max hofmeister: you can see the difference
Seth L: Usually when we have a huge difference in something like this, as we've had on other models, we'll work to phase out the sub par components because we lose money on every return
Seth L: We're fairly responsive to complaints, but still the only way to know is to check when it arrives
max hofmeister: ya I guess, man purchasing shouldnt be a gamble lol
Seth L: No, but any laptop company that tells you exactly which brand of component you'll get either uses a single supplier or is lying
max hofmeister: Yeah but consistency should be guaranteed
max hofmeister: regardless of supplier
max hofmeister: love the Y50, just hesitant about the display
Seth L: We always aim for consistency, but these are new models so we're still working through initial issues
max hofmeister: and I guess lastly,
Seth L: It's up to you. Clearly I'm not going to lie to make the sale
max hofmeister: is that 48hz lock something that might change in the future
max hofmeister: just seems odd to lock at 48hz with a GTX860 that could easily do 60fps
Seth L: I don't know. I think they locked it to ensure smoothness across the different models---the 4GB GTX would probably be find, but its possible the 2GB model would not display at 60 as well
max hofmeister: What is your employee number
Seth L: 2900717606
max hofmeister: if I decide to order I will use it
Seth L: Hey thanks
max hofmeister: Hey np, proper service deserves proper thanks
max hofmeister: appreciate the help
Seth L: You're welcome -

Do you mind explaining your logic in how this could improve battery life when the stock battery is 54Wh?
-
The battery is 8 cell instead of 4 cell. That doesn't necessarily mean anything but it often does. Anyone know if Wh rating per cell or for the entire battery?
-
It's the entire battery. He's right, that battery would perform worse than the stock battery. Always look for Whr. Cells can be all different sizes so the number of them is irrelevant. In general, you're not going to find a higher capacity battery than the stock one unless they left a lot of empty space in there or if you wait a few years for new and more efficient batteries to come out.Wombats likes this.

If I open a picture in photoshop with inaccurate yellows, I can make it look right by dragging the curves down and to the right, and also increasing the exposure slightly. The problem is I don't know how to do that process to the screen itself - is there a way to change the "curves" or "exposure" of the screen? Maybe a custom colour profile or even changing the LUT would help, but I have no idea how to do that.
The problem isn't just with yellows appearing mustardy or green. Certain blues appear way too cyan, and some reds appear maroonish/brown (I.e. The stock windows 8.1 red theme) so it's definitely a problem with the greens not displaying properly. And the colour issues are really exacerbated when you lower display brightness.
So although I'll say the issue most likely isn't hardware based because I can get (almost) accurate yellows in photoshop, I'll also I admit I have no idea how to fix it from a software perspective. Maybe an updated driver from lenovo may help, or someone more knowledgeable with colour profiles might have a solution.
