Can anyone who has done a fresh install confirm whether or not the sleep/keyboard refresh rate bug exists on your unit. This is the bug when you put the computer to sleep and then wake it, holding backspace to delete characters takes forever unless you go into keyboard control panel settings and resave the repeat rate. I was content with Microsoft's lack of bloatware on this unit but that bug is annoying and am curious if a fresh install would help.

Ok I have three Questions?
(1)Hey Brian from Klickonline I was wondering if you had heard anything else about getting in the y50 touch with 16gb ram and 4g 860 because I really wanted this model but can't seem to wait much longer because I need it before school starts. Or do you have any in stock?
(2)What is the deal with the fans in the y50 making a slight noise and in which models of the y50 are they making the noise in. Also how are the yellows in the regular y50?
(3) What is the difference between the i7 4700 vs. the i7 4710?
Thanks -

generally, intel does this kind of refresh every time with every generation and there's no obvious improvement
100mhz increase in base clock is pretty much nothing, because you can easily turbo boost it up. 3.5 max in turbo doesn't do anything real either.
so normally there's no difference basically
BUT, here's the problem with y50. lenovo set the bios to turn off turbo whenever the CPU is over 65C, therefore you are limited to only the base clock performance under heavier loads, which may have trouble handling those.
a lot of online and RTS such as wow, lol, sc are more cpu extensive, therefore cutting turbo at this temp will somewhat hinder the performance on these games.
with the haswell refresh 4710hq, 2.5ghz vs 2.4ghz base clock can actually make somewhat of a difference here since turbo is very short-lived on the y50.
my advice would be get it if you can but don't worry too much about it -
This is a great laptop, but it has so many tiny (but noticable) issues. I can replicate the key issue where it doesn't register (although it isn't a problem as I either hit the keys dead on or I apply a normal amount of pressure). The screen viewing angles (Chi Mei) are horrible; if I'm showing pictures to people around me, I have to turn the laptop to get them to view it head on, otherwise the colors have shifted.
Fixing those issues, making the battery larger, adding a better screen, adding just 1 mSATA slot, and a few cosmetic issues would place this laptop so much closer to perfection...
EDIT: I'd also like to mention that I don't get that clicking noise with the fans, unlike a few others on this thread. -
Does anybody else have wifi issues? On speedtest I'm getting 5mbps, while on my old laptop I got 27mbps. Also, my download speed is ~300kbps, while on my old laptop I could get 3mbps.
Also, sometimes text looks blurry, but I used "one scaling size" in display. Is this the only solution?
My wireless card is the intel wireless-ac 7260
And my router is the e1200 n300 -
It has been 1 month since I bought my y50 and it's time to have a look at the pro's and con's. Before I begin I want to clarify that I have the 512gb SSD, i7 4700 HQ, 16GB RAM, GTX860 4GB model. At first I thought I had the AUO display, but I found out that in fact it's the Chi Mei.
So here it goes:
* I still get excited opening the lid when I get up in the morning and I see the red highlights. There is no other way of putting it, it's just gorgeous.
* I personally like the keyboard, and I have no issues with the track pad, I actually like using it when I have the laptop in bed. Of course some setting changes were required for both, but that's normal I guess, everybody has their own preferences.
* The Display - well at first it was pretty bad, but after some tinkering I was able to get the colors to almost completely match my Dell IPS display. The viewing angles...not so good. If you are looking straight at it, it's ok, but otherwise...not so much. Since I don't plan on using it's display to watch movies with friends, I am ok with it. Don't get me wrong...I would love an IPS display, but it's not a deal breaker for me.
* Battery - I haven't really tried to get the maximum out of it, since I am using it mostly on my desk and it's plugged in. But I would say around 2-3 hours of video playback and browsing.
* SSD performance - very good! At first it was booting for around 10 seconds, but after that it has been around 6-7 seconds from pressing the button to the Metro Screen. I am using an external usb3 hard drive to expand my storage, and that works pretty good.
edit: It looks like the SSD is a Samsung PM851
p.s Since I have a lot of external drives I bought a usb3 hub which is very helpful since the laptop has only 2 usb3 ports.
* Wi-Fi - Surprisingly I've had absolutely no issues whatsoever with the intel 3160 wireless card.
* Editing photos - The laptop handled everything I threw at it. From .raw to big .tif files it was very fast. After my display calibrations I feel confident editing photos on the laptop without using my external monitor if I need to.
* Gaming - I updated the NVidia drivers with the instructions from the thread which worked like a charm! Thanks again to the user that provided those! So far I've played Crysis 3, Watch Dogs, Sniper Elite 3, Need for Speed Rivals, Wolfenstein: The new order, Diablo 3, Skyrim, CS:GO...and so on. The only game that I cannot run on max settings is Crysis 3. Also the only game so far that has managed to push the laptop to 90c. Everything else I've played on max settings and I am getting 30+ fps and the laptop doesn't go over 75c. Talking about heat...the keyboard gets quite hot even if the laptop itself doesn't generally reach high temps. Mostly around the WASD keys. So I would recommend a cooling pad, for me that brought the temperature down in all situations with around 6-10c.
edit: Normal use temperature is between 47-51c.
* Speakers - I am really pleased with the speakers, before I had this laptop I had external speakers, now I don't feel the need to connect those to the laptop. I've watched a few movies with my brother and the sound was great.
Conclusion: I love this laptop and I don't regret buying it for a second! I keep checking from time to time, to see if there is another laptop available for that amount of money with those specs...In a similar shell. And the answer is there just isn't one.

New Nvidia drivers are out:

I thought the problem was due to overly aggressive power management which was putting the HD to sleep (I have the 1TB hybrid HD), so in Intel Rapid Storage I turned power management off. But that didn't do anything. It could also just be that the drive is super slow (which it is), but why would this only be a problem in WoW?
This is the one lingering problem with this computer and it's really frustrating me. -
Well, I just finished swapping my UHD-Touch model for the 4th time from the Microsoft Store. This time I think I'm all set. First computer had a cut in the rubberized finish (small, but still bugged me). Second one had the issue with the fan clicking. Third had some kind of black dot on the screen, but it wasn't a dead pixel (most likely something stuck under the screen) AND a Touch Screen that didn't work. Fourth computer, everything seems good. I also noticed that on the fourth computer, I think the Yellows may be a tad better than what I was used to on the first I was using (only used the first for an extended period of time). It's the same screen model, but Yellows seem less green and more yellow.

Why is it when you highlight text the screen dims briefly?

can anyone tell me about the wifi in the laptop. I bought an Asus n550jk from Newegg and the Qualcomm Atheros ar9485wb-eg card is ing awful. Either I need a router for my modem, or this card is just awful with windows 8.1. Thank you.

Others have the intel 3160.... Which is what mine has too.... And haven't had any problems with it
Some people did report problems though.. -
For those of you who installed a new SSD/HDD, did you have any trouble taking the back plate off? I tried earlier but it seemed difficult to come off near the top of the laptop. I didn't want to damage anything so I stuck it back on. This was on one of the laptops I returned. Now that I'm keeping this one, I'd like to completely take it off this time.

I still have some dimming issues but not nearly as bad as before unchecking that box. It's only at full brightness too. -

Hey guys
Just ordered my y50 (512ssd, 16gig ram, 4gig gtx)and have come to the conclusion that the main issue with this laptop which can be fixed easily, I think. I have a few question and solutions but not sure if am right. So, correct me if am wrong
1) bloatware----> reinstalled windows 8.1(what is the different bewteen reinstalling win7 or win8) which is preferable?
2) color distortion---> color calibration already provided on the forum
3) viewing angle---> not a problem, it only me looking
4) latest nvidia 340 beta---> solution already provided ( don't know if there is a huge difference b/w the latest driver and the stock version)
Also I stupidly forgot this version does not come with an optical drive. I might need to play some dvd for class when school starts. is there way to buy the dvd drive seperate from lenovo site?
Finanlly even without getting the laptop, I think the value and price are in equilibrium. Of course both are subective based on what you value. But for the overall user, I think it is the perfect machine -

3160 isn't as good... But I haven't had any performance... So I think you'll like it -

Anybody resolved the 48Hz screen issue?
And the white noise when using headphones?
Did anybody of you overclock the GPU in some way?
Any one of you bought a Kensington lock?
Removing the sticker that says "always on USB - Hd webcam" etc will void the warranty? -
As for the stickers, I've never heard of that voiding your warranty. Only the stickers that explicitly say that it will void your warranty, which this machine doesn't have. -
-
Bought a lock, haven't used it. Got questions?
Removing the sticker shouldn't void your warranty. I did it on mine. -
Question:
I am going to be buying the 16 GB RAM, and the 4GB VRAM model with the regular 1080p FHD
How do I know who will sell me the AUO screen or the chi mei screen for this model? I want to get the best screen if I can.
Thanks. -
i was using the same program but I wanted to to sure that it is all right to use it.
Do you also use some programs to stop the CPU throttle, like ThrottleStop?
is it a Kensington? where have you bought it, what are its dimensions?
-Can anybody tell me what ram are they using? Hwinfo shows a 800mhz Samsung ram, which is strange. -
-
One more thing to note. The Microsoft 4k Touch model actually had a Lite-on SSD, and not a Samsung. -
I don't use anything to stop the CPU from throttling. I do wish we could change settings in the bios where it would only stop boosting after a higher temperature, but whatever. My games run just fine as they are anyway.
It is a Kensington. Got it somewhere on eBay, pretty cheap. No idea what dimensions (it's sitting at home).m1ko likes this. -
Could you take a picture of it? does it have a combination or a key? coiled cable or straight?
I ask this because i dont want to end up with an incompatible lock. -
Edit: Nvm, found out problem was a lenevo application.

Hi guys I have a bunch of questions if anyone can answer them. Also I am very new to these forums so forgive me if I'm doing something wrong here:
1. I believe that there is only one 2.5in slot (right?). Can I put something like a WD Black2 which is 9mm tall?
2. About the screen, I want to replace it for another screen for under 100$ but am overwhelmed by all the choices. Can someone reccomend a good one? Maybe one that you own. It doesn't have to be perfect, but I need to know that I will get something decent out of my money.
3. How does the 860m stack up in gaming (namely BF3 and BF4)? There are a videos out there about this but a lot has changed since then so I want someone with hands on experience.
4. How's the battery life on this? I may need this in school, so would you recommend it?
5. This is more of a general question, but how would 256 gigs fair for me? Maybe two-three games, songs and word docs. Or should I look into another option for more storage?
Many thanks. -
4. Not great but it's better than ivy bridge. I get 3-4 hours of typical use but have to turn my brightness down a little to get it. Mine is 4k though so YMMV
5. 256GB is good for most people I think. I've dealt with it for a couple years now and it's a lot easier now than it was a few years ago. I just download the games I actively play and keep as much as possible in the cloud. You'll certainly be able to have more than 2-3 games. More like 8-10 depending on their sizes. -
This workaround for the keyboard bug has been working for me so far: Windows 7 Keyboard Repeat Rate and Delay are Reset on Resume from Standby / Sleep - Super User
Hopefully Lenovo will have a real fix sometime soon. Thread is here so if you want it to get fixed for real, please post there or at least hit the button on the OP indicating you're also having the problem: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaPad...-too-slow-after-coming-back-from/td-p/1650904ATG likes this. -

I have been reading about how the Y50 FHD Non-Touch/Non-4K version is not equipped with an IPS display and I just came across this on Amazon being sold by Amazon directly:
http://amzn.com/B00K6ZIMPE
Lenovo Y50 15.6-Inch Laptop (59425944) Black
Specs says 15.6-Inch FHD (1920 x 1080) IPS Display
It is sold by Amazon and ships in 2-4 weeks and also by Circuit City who say it is in ready stock.
Above model is not yet visible on the Lenovo website and the Y50 page has been reduced to just 3 models (there were many more models earlier). For example, the model with the 512GB SSD is no longer available on the Lenovo website.
