Thought I'd post this here in case anyone else is having similar issues with the Microsoft Store UHD Touch model. I had near-constant Wifi drops and a non-functional headphone jack. Both problems were resolved by installing different drivers. Not sure where they got the drivers for the Microsoft Store version from but they're a bit screwed up.

The Intel driver for the 7260 is here: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchResult.aspx?lang=eng&FamilyId=1783&ProductID=3716&ProdId=3716
Realtek driver for working headphone jack is from Lenovo's website: Laptops and netbooks :: Lenovo Y Series laptops :: Y50 70 Notebook Lenovo - Lenovo (US)

I think he's referring to the black 2 which is ssd + hdd

Not sure it directly fits.... I remember people said you'll have to scrape a bit off to make it fit....

Chances are slim that it's IPS - Amazon had the regular Y50's originally listed with IPS, as well as Tiger Direct and other retailers initially said IPS (and not sure if Tiger Direct still does or not), and they were all not IPS. So the assumption would be a listing error.

1: Yes, only one 2.5" slot. As for the 9mm, others have said it's possible and I think it should be possible. There are two soft pads attached to the bottom of the case that you could remove.

2: All of the choices listed at the beginning of the Replacement Display thread can be used. I will be replacing my screen with the B156HAN01.2 within the next couple of weeks, whenever the screen arrives in the mail from China
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/ideapad-essential/755626-y50-replacement-displays-compendium-36.html

3: I use it in BF4 for gaming. It works really well. With all the settings set to low while on 1080p, I always get much higher than 60fps.

4: It's okay. I plan on using this for school and I think it'll do just fine. With a wireless mouse plugged in, screen brightness at 100% (with the cruddy Chi Mei screen), and browsing the internet over wifi, you can get between 3 and 4 hours. Just make sure you have the power plan set to Balanced instead of High Power so the CPU only uses 5W instead of 10-12W.

5: I have a 512GB SSD and with Windows 8.1, 5GB of music, 12.6GB of movies, 5.6GB of pictures, 26GB on desktop (folder with ISOs, tools for working with computers), 32GB in Steam, 101GB in Origin, and various other stuff, I take up 218GB of space. You should be fine, so long as you control what games you put on there. Titanfall takes up 54GB with DLC and BF4 takes up 47GB with all DLC. The computer has two USB 3.0 slots, so you can always buy an external USB 3.0 HDD and store your games on that.

What I intend on doing before college starts up is buying a battery pack that has the ability to charge laptops and put that in the case with it.

Another thing that will help your battery life is disabling all start-up programs except for those I really want (for me, none. I always leave the touchpad software enabled though). You can do this from the task manager in Windows 8. Windows 7 requires you to press Win+R to get to the run tab. Then you type in msconfig which brings up a small window. Go to the startup tab and disable everything except for those you want and the touchpad software.

All Kensington locks are compatible. The hole is always the same, so the lock is always the same or with slight variances due to lock design.
I will edit my post if anyone can show me that I'm wrong, as my statement is based on experience and little research.

Thanks for the detailed reply, and if you could, can you report on how the screen plays out for you? Also, I guess for you external HDD option, you do have a point I missed out on. I can buy a dirty cheap HDD enclosure (like this one: http://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-2-5-Inch-External-Enclosure-EC-RA25/dp/B00JWTPMOO) and just use the drive that came with the laptop. Again, thanks, this was the exact reply I was looking for!

So would you like to be guinea pig #2? When I tried putting the SSHD included with it in an external case, I couldn't seem to get any computers to recognize it. I think it uses SAS but has SATA shaped connectors... Still really iffy on the details on why it wasn't really working. I work at a computer repair shop, so finding a spare laptop hard drive wasn't hard.

If anyone has any suggestions, I'm up for just about anything. If the drive can't be used anywhere but in my laptop, it's pretty much useless to me.

Ahh that sucks, but since I plan on getting a 256(?) gig SSD anyways, I might a s well spend the extra 20 bucks to get 1tb of free hard drive space. Keep in mind that I still haven't ordered the laptop, so when I do (or if I do as I may end up buying another laptop from a friend although that's unlikely), I'll report back on what happens.

Can anybody specify detailed specs for this y50 code
    LENOVO Y50-70AMBKTX178G1TBER8E.
    17is i7
    8G is 8GB ram
    1TB is HDD
Dunno about GPU being 4GB or 2GB or the WiFi card.

It is the type of code i got on my order page for the y500.
The reason i am asking is because lenovo imported 300 of these in India and they still havent revealed the details about he specs.
So if anybody can tell the specs please do so.

    IdeaPadY500AMBKTAI73630QM8G1TBR8MUS
This was hw same string for my Y500-59371965

Guys, do you recommend changing something in the nvidia control panel? Like ,for example, "the power management" from "adaptive" to "prefer maximum performance". And the PhysX configuration set to the gtx 860m only?. And maybe the "multi display / mixed gpu acceleration" to "single display performance mode"?
I had a Desktop computer, so, i don`t know how to set the nvidia settings on a laptop. I want it to use its maximum power when i'm playing, but when im not i would like the laptop to work without wasting too much battery.

What temperatures should I be getting when for example, I'm downloading some Steam games and have Firefox open. I didn't really consider it to be an extensive process, but overall laptop temperatures seem to be around 60 degrees C while core temperatures are similar. Max it hit while downloading some games in the background was 68 degrees C for the cores and 66 for overall. Is it normal? I'm only asking because the fan seemed a bit more active after I put a mechanical HDD inside to replace the SSD. I also noticed that a small piece of plastic that may have come out of the laptop, but I'm not entirely sure it came from my laptop because I just opened up a hard drive enclosure that held a Samsung Spinpoint (2TB) and it may have came from that. It wasn't an external piece of plastic and was VERY tiny, looked like it could have been a clip of some kind.

Also, for those asking, you can fit 9mm drives in this laptop.

After removing all the bloat from windows 8.1, I started getting memory errors while gaming. So today, after getting sick and tired of the errors, I've installed windows 7 on my y50, didn't encounter any driver issues at all and was also able to update the nvidia drivers to 377.78 (same method as windows 8.1 except I didn't have to disable driver signing and all that stuff)

Hey guys - I was hoping to get the opinions of you guys who know more about computer manufacturing than myself.

Essentially, I just ordered a lenovo y50 (59425943) (4700HQ, 16gb RAM, 2gb VRAM, 256gb SSD, 4k display) from amazon. However, I only see this particular y50 specification line-up on either amazon or new-egg, but not on the lenovo website. I am concerned that this particular model was an earlier production run and not being made anymore by lenovo, and as a result, may be more prone to having physical defects like bad screens and whatnot. Is this a real concern or am I being paranoid? Why is it that some y50 models can be found only on amazon/new-egg but are not offered on lenovo's website? I don't quite understand

Also, what are your opinions on 2gb vs 4gb of VRAM? would I be able to play new FPS games coming out in 4 years with 2gb vram? right now I mostly play dota 2, LoL, or CS:GO - which I understand is no problem on 2gb vram. But what about BF4?

    Thanks! I appreciate any help!

You've got nothing to worry about. All the models are shipped and backed up by Lenovo for the resellers. Lenovo's website is just silly and they never seem to carry even a significant variety of their own models! Lenovo's inventory structure is confounding to say the least.

User reported temperatures seem to be all over the place. My general temps when web browsing/watching videos/light downloading have been ranging from low thirties to very early fifties. Not once has my keyboard felt uncomfortably hot thus far while doing anything non-gaming related.

A bit worried about my gaming temps though. Just the other day I was playing Skyrim on ultra settings whilst plugged in (with AA off, and with my FPS locked at 30 with vsync) and I was hitting max temps of 77.

And it's not like I was playing on a poor surface like a bed, I was playing on a well-ventilated surface about 1 foot above the ground. Might consider picking up a cooling pad (though I'm not entirely certain as to which one would provide noticeable results with this laptop).

Simple, VMI! Vendor-managed inventory - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    See this thesis, page 39:

    http://hig.diva-portal.org/smash/get/diva2:704893/FULLTEXT01.pdf

"Currently, Lenovo has achieved a shift from the mass-producing a standardized
product to flexible manufacturing customized product. In the flexible manufacturing
lines, Lenovo customizes the product configurations according to customer demand.
All of the CPU, hard drive, and memory and software systems can be custom fitted.
A model is established in VMI, which can identify, filtrate, and translate the demand
information for customization. By accumulation and analysis of customer information,
Lenovo can understand the customer's overall needs. It achieves real-time customer
information sharing, create value for customers and improve customer service level."

Basically, what this thesis is saying, is that Lenovo treats each of their resellers as "customers", who mass order particular systems configurations. These system models are branded by the resellers unique VMI "model number". Amazon, and New Egg, have their own VMI models.

This is common for other large, big box, retailers. Ever wonder how Sears, or Best Buy, can guarantee that "if you find this model, anywhere for less, we'll refund the difference!" It's because that big box retailer, has an agreement with the OEM, to make their model with a unique VMI model number.

Curious as to why you went from an SSD to a HD? I got $100 for the 256GB SSD mine came with and put that towards a Crucial 512GB that cost $219. So it only cost $119 net. I understand cost is an issue and going to a 1TB SSD was around $450. If you need a lot more storage, keep the 256 SSD and pick up an external USB 3.0 1TB drive. I don't know your situation but I'll never go back to a regular HD now.

I rarely order from the manufacturers anymore unless they have some huge limited time coupon. Amazon had the Y50 4k on pre-order forever even after it was available on Newegg and such. I waited and waited and I came very close to getting the FHD Y50 but I figured I'd check and sure enough the 4K was now available for $1,399. I do a lot of business with Amazon and I know when they first offer something within a day or two they almost always discount it for a short amount of time. Sure enough, 2 days later it was $100 off for $1,299 and I jumped at it. It was only in stock for a few days, then it was sold by a 3rd party and the price jumped to $1,500. I just checked now and Amazon is selling it again for $1,299 but In stock on August 7, 2014. . I like the fact mine came with the external DVD drive. I'll never use it but I've read where it's not coming free for some people who buy it elsewhere. In any event, just have to do your research but you just have to pull the trigger at some point. I wish there was more 4k content and more things were scaled for an UHD screen. That will come with time.

I use the SSHD as an external drive and it works just fine. However I had to repartition and reformat it because when I first plugged it in I could see only 1GB available on one partition(FAT32), the rest was unallocated space.

I use a lot of storage space, so I actually put a 2TB in mine. $450 for a 1TB SSD vs $85 for a 2TB HDD was what I was looking at. I don't care as much for speed than I do for storage and I don't want to have to use an external every time I want to get to my stuff.

Still a bit curious as to why my fans are working harder and temperatures seem to be up after the installation though. I guess it's because the HDD runs hotter maybe?

Is it recommended to use conservation mode while gaming? Conservation mode keeps the laptops power at 60 percent so i assume when it reaches 60 percent the laptop will draw power from the wall socket? So its better for the battery life?

Hello guys, good morning. I am planing to buy the y50 4k touchscreen from microsoft store and i have some questions and worries about it. First i want to know if I can replace the 256gb ssd with the Samsung Evo 840 1TB Ssd. Will it work/fit the y50? Second question is about the 48hz problem. I asked lenovo attendent via chat and he said that the new 4k models selling now do have this issue resolved/fixed after Lenovo updated some hardware. The attendent told me to call lenovo support for more information about how to solve the 48hz issue but said it was possible. I do live in brazil so i will pay international call. Could you guys call lenovo tech support and check if this 48hz issue can be solved as well with the yellow collor problem with the 4k? Thanks for your help.

Sorry unfortunatly do not have the name. But I talked to him just a few hours ago. And he told me after checking the system that the 48hZ issue had been resolved after some hardware upgrades and the new 4k units do not have these problems. How about the SSD upgrade? Can i buy the Samsung Evo 840 1Tb and replace the 256 ssd that comes in microsoft unit? I read there were 2 types of samsung 1Tb ssd : the 2.5'' and the mSata types. Which one will fit/work the y50? I also would like to know your opinion as gamers . When playing games in 1080p resolution in this 4k y50 model, have you had important lags in games?

Yes, it will work. All 2.5" drives that use SATA will work, so long as they are 9mm or less in height. The 9mm is just a guess, btw. Until we have someone post saying that they managed to get it to work, it is just reasonable speculation.

I have the MS Y50 Touch, and literally replaced the SSD in there for the Samsung EVO 840 yesterday (500GB). It fits and works just fine. No extra work needed outside of opening the case and swapping the drives.

Thanks. So the 1TB SSD Evo 840 will also work like the others from samsung right? Now let us wait for the calling to the lenovo support and see what they will say about the 48hz issue and also about the collors calibration

Depends on what you want? Microsoft is the only one to have touch screen. And its much faster to get it from them right now. But the Lenovo site has 512 SSD and 4GB Video card.
Personally i would go Microsoft and try to get an even better student discount.

Compare read/write speeds. I was going to go with the M550 series from Crucial which had faster speeds but in every day use you won't see any difference and the added cost wasn't worth it.

I just hooked up a Dell UP2414Q 24" UHD monitor and started some work in Photoshop. Now I can see the slight yellow issue everyone has been talking about. If I extend the monitors and look at the same image with a lot of yellow in it on the Dell and Y50's display you can see a slight difference in the yellow. At least for my Y50 it's a really small difference. HDMI 1.4 will only run at 30Hz and it doesn't affect the stuff I do. I'm not a gamer.

I wouldn't worry about the 2gb vs 4gb graphics card. The most vram intensive games today don't use over 2gb vram (at 1080p on a single monitor) except for rare circumstances like highly modded skyrim - and even then it's close. Down the road, when highest-end games start requiring over 2gb vram, it wouldn't much matter if you had 2gb or 4gb vram because now the bottleneck would be the GTX 860M gpu in the y50. But at that point its a few years off (I guess 2-4 years I don't know) and its almost time for a new computer anyway. The 4gb vram is either a sales tactic or its for the hardcore gamers who are playing on 4k resolution or multiple monitors - in which case, you'd probably want a desktop anyway. But this is just my opinion - it's why I went with the 2gb vram model, but others may feel differently of course

It is $300 for the three year warranty. See my link to my post on slickdeals that I posted a few posts back. The sku for the three year plan is there.
