Where's the UHD model without the 48Hz you guys are talking about? Would seriously consider returning mine soon if it was 60Hz+. Chances are it probably has better colors too.

Edit: I see it was just from Lenovo chat. Probably not very trustworthy. Will wait on later confirmation.

How good is Lenovo with AHD and warranty? Does anyone know if Microsoft is any better. What touch pad is on the y50 UHD from Lenovo? Is it the Élan, or is the Élan a Microsoft store exclusive.

    Hey guys,
For peak performance, what would you suggest a new lenovo owner should do once his or her laptop arrives.
I would have thought there should be video of this on youtube and not just unboxing video. Thanks in advance

Since you got the Synaptics and I got the Elan from the MS Store, I guess it's random what you get.

As for the warranty, Lenovo just dropped the price on the ADP + In Home Repair option for 3 years...

    3YR In-Home + Accidental Damage Protection

    Part Number: 78Y1541

    $191.20

Guess I'm returning my MS Complete warranty...

But I wanted to watch a little review of the 4k Touchscreen model made by one of you guys on youtube for us to see the screen quality and touchscreen reponse. It would be good to see 1 game running as well to check how it peforms with all those issues related here. Could anyone that own the y50 4k touchscreen model please post a video on youtube showing this to us please? After this i will buy my unit from microsoft. thank you for the help

Can someone please explain me why Windows can't just 4x the pixels when you change the screen from 4k to 1080p? I see people saying that if you use a 4K screen in not native resolution things will not look like a native 1080p screen how come? Can't windows just double the amount of pixels per inch?

I just got a Zalman NC-1000 and it is working pretty well so far. Gaming temps have dropped for both CPU and GPU to around 55 C; a 5-8 degree drop; but best of all the really hot keys are no longer so hot; just warm. The cooler is a little loud but the angle at which it puts the keyboard is quite nice and everything is adjustable.

It can. I just compared a 1080p image on both a 1080p panel and the Y50 scaled down to 1080p and they both look identical. Now you will notice that text looks messed up but that's because I haven't adjusted the scaling to compensate. I think this machine would look just like any other 1080p panel if I left it at that res and scaled it properly.

I saw an explanation somewhere back in this thread that described the fuzziness as being caused by the interpolation algorithm used. Not sure if windows uses bilinear or bucubic though so I can't comment on exactly what's wrong with it.

It may also have something to do with the fact that the y50 uhd screen is pentile, which intrinsically looks a bit fuzzier than normal rgb.

So I've tried looking for it in this forum, but I couldn't find it.
    The $900 i5 4200H (2.8GHz), 8GB Memory, 1TB HDD, 8GB SSD.
Worth it? Really falling for it. It's either this y50, or the Acer Aspire V3-772G-5413 17.3-Inch for $800. Granted it has the 850m, but its cheaper by $100.
    Help please?

Just got my y50 UHD - the screen is absolutely gorgeous. The yellows are certainly off, but the sharpness is really cool.

I was wondering, when playing games, do I need to change my desktop resolution down to 1080p AND the game resolution to 1080p, or just the game resolution? thanks!

Im having this problem as well with CSGO. Loaded Windows 7 Pro (x64) with latest WHQL drivers. Im going go try loading back Windows 8.1 (OEM) on this HDD and then reapplying thermal paste if it doesn't help.

Do you have an SSD in your Y50? If not, the lag is probably caused by the HDD spinning up when data is requested from it.
Changing to an SSD will solve this problem.

If you have SSD already I suspect it could be CPU clocking down and back up again or some program causing it. Mcafee (MALWARE IMO) is known to cause lagspikes in games, get rid of it ASAP if it is installed.

Hi,I have been researching for a new laptop for days now, and the y50 is a very good candidate, I just have some simple yet decisive questions:

1- Does the touch version get an AUO display by default ? if that's the case then I will pay extra money to get the better AUO display.

2- On amazon there are a lot of y50 models:

    Touch :
    59426255
    59420895

    Non Touch:
    59425944
    59426157
    59421845
    59416738
    59421855
    59421847
    59416755
    59416739
    59421856

Are any of these guaranteed a AUO display ?

3- IPS vs TN , which is more comfortable to the eye while reading ? (I read A LOT)

I don't now about the rest of TN panels but the ones used in Y50 IMO is certainly not good for reading. Viewing angles are very bad and for reading thats a dealbreaker unless you stare at the monitor and don't move your head.

I'm going to be returning mine after all. Even though I went through a few exchanges, this one's fan just started clicking. Coupled with the other problems this machine has, I'll either wait for a revision or wait for a new laptop all together.

Hi.. The viewing angle on white backgrounds are good.... They're pretty bad on black backgrounds or dark ones though.... But for reading... Chances are you'll be fine...

Colors look good after calibrating the display... Not sure about auo panels being consistent in touchscreen models... But I remember it being the case.... Better wait for some confirmation for that though...

Also why not consider the 4k model... It should be really sharp and good for reading.... Colors are good too....

Couple of good reviews you could see

    Lenovo Ideapad Y50 Touch Review Part 1 [1080p]: http://youtu.be/DMjUo-FUbp4

One is the chi mei panel.... The other is the auo.... Hope that helps :)

i bought lenovo y50 uhd touch model from microsoft store about 2 weeks ago. I am returning it within next week. Some info for potential buyers.

    1. The ips panel is good and colors are vivid. The display can be called better than average. The 4k resolution is also really good but is likely not required for a 15.6' screen as per my experience.

    2. The brightness is about 220 nits which is below an avg laptop. ( The msi ghost boasts around 350 nits ). definetely not for outdoor use.

    3. The uhd touch has a glossy surface and is very reflective. Use the laptop near a light source and u will see urself all the time.

    4. The 4k makes everything so small. Applications for windows 7 such as vlc media player are extremely small. (It seems we are not fully ready for 4k yet)
If you plan on buying a 4k laptop to use it at full hd , dont. It doesnt work, because everything is big now in full hd and not usable .

    5. Gaming is pretty impressive. Infact it is so impressive that it is disappointing. (dont get it ). The nvidia 860m maxwell can go beyond 48 fps for so many games. I used fraps on assassins creed revelations and ran it at 3k with max settings. The frame rate is still at 48 and it could go beyond that. Same for skyrim. I ran skyrim at full hd and max settings and the graphics is pushing to go beyond 48 fps. It remains constant at 48.

    6. The sound is the best i have heard on a laptop.

Everything aside, i would be more than happy to keep the laptop if only the display could be set to 60hz. Whats wrong with lenovo ? It supposed to be lenovo's flagship gaming laptop. Alienware offers option of 120hz refresh rate on some of its models. I cannot take it anymore. I had a long chat with a lenovo rep and he said that there might be an explanation or new news coming out in next week about the 48 hz issue. So i am waiting for a week before returning it.

Thanks for your feedback on the 4k screen. I am thinking hard about buying a y50 with a UHD screen myself but haven't seen many pics showing the screen in a well lit room. Any chance you might be able to post some pics that might demonstrate colour saturation on the UHD screen? Thanks in advance

Can you try scaling it to FHD and tell me if it works just as good if possible. It would really ease my decision if I should buy the laptop. I want to buy the laptop but I will use lots of apps, software and there is a big chance I will need to have them scaled properly. I want to buy a FHD laptop but no good one is out there and the ones that exist are too expensive my only choices narrow down to this laptop and for the coming G551.

Assuming I don't move my head too much, will the slight color shift strain my eye as opposed to an IPS ?

    That's very helpful, Thanks!

The reason I won't be getting the 4K model is the added cost, 48 Hz and because I really don't have any use for that much resolution.

The Touch screen of the Y50 in this youtube video is good and other videos also show a good screen ( at least for me), I still need a confirmation wether touch screen models have better display though.

I changed the res to fhd scaled it to 125% and then tried 150%. The scaling does fix about 85% of the problem to be honest. Still i beleive it doesnt look fully identical to the natice fhd res. ( examples are some of the icons and the indicators like the wifi signal look different. ) but it works and is fully usable after scaling.

Also for those worring about colors and viewing angles on 4k display, it is really impressive. Not the best but exponentially better than the tn panel.

Hey guys. I had a quick question, when playing Dota 2 on a 4k y50, I always set the game settings to 1080p in the game options, do I also need to set the desktop settings to 1080p in order to ensure my game is truly running at 1080p? so as not to tax the gpu so much? Thanks!

What have you guys been paying for the Y50 4K TOUCH in the US and where? And 256GB or 512GB SSD?

I had my heart set on a 17" laptop to use mostly as a desktop replacement but the 4K display may win me over... depending on PRICE. I'm not really a gamer but do some architectural design (Chief Architect) and wondering if I need the GTX860M, or if it will even do anything for my applications (CAD, spreadsheets, photo editing, etc.)

    Hey Guys,

So I kind of decided that the 4K Touch model at microsoft is great but the 4K screen issues seem more troubling than the FHD one.

Also how do you know which models will have the AUO screen and is the ChiMei screen really that bad?

Last question, Is it an elan trackpad or synpatics? Have you guys had any issues with the trackpad? I use the 2 finger scroll option a lot and I would like to know if that is good.

You can order form amazon. They do not charge tax - I'm not sure how, but they fall into some loophole. I purchased this one: Amazon.com : Lenovo Y50 4k 15.6-Inch Laptop (59425943) Black : Computers & Accessories

When I bought it a few days ago, the price was $1,299.00 I also added the 3 year accidental damage protection option for the additional $194. So the total was less than $1,500. I am very pleased with it so far. Even the processor (i7-4700HQ) seems to have better benchmarks than the other, newer processor (i7-4710HQ).

Thanks. I see the MS Store has it for 1399, formerly 1499... I couldn't figure out why Klick was selling the same thing for 1567 for the 256GB version...
