I agree with you. Although I like the keys themselves, I very much dislike how hard I have to type to not miss keystrokes and how often I miss right shift and hit up arrow instead. These are things I could get used to but I've certainly seen better keyboards in Alienware, Apple, Thinkpads, Razer, etc. Even the Ghost Pro is better than this one imho.

Unfortunately, that only applies to American schools :( On the Canadian site, students are able to save 10% only on select models, which I'm assuming switches every now and then. Thanks though!

I think there might be a different keyboard among the models. I have the FHD Y50 and it feels a lot like my previous Y410P's keyboard which was very, very mushy. I would constantly miss keystrokes on that too like on the Y50's keyboard.
I tried 2 of my friends Y510P's and theirs had excellent keyboards with great feedback and perhaps Lenovo did something along those lines with the Y50 4K and FHD models. This is just my speculation.

Hey guys , I recently posted on a forum about my y50 being sent back for technical problems, (Shutting off under load) although Lenovo have excellent customer support and successfully fixed my laptop, They denied replacing my back cover for the laptop because it got damaged in shipping so it was my fault I guess. Now I'm left with an inch wide gap on the fake vents for the left side of the laptop. Not that it affects the performance or screen at all, BUT it does look bad seeing as it is a new laptop. I guess what i want to know is if there are any websites I could just buy a new back cover from? or what is the best way to go about fixing this cosmetic issue?
p.s. the hinge and some sort of cable is visible due to the lack of cover.

this I think you still have to send them back and pay a few bucks for a new cover.
their repair site should have the parts, but I guess it requires a payment since the warranty doesn't cover it.

it's better to call them and see

They replied, they want to charge me anywhere from 240$-269$ for a cover replacement ! I highly doubt a simple back cover costs 200 Dollars. Is there any alternatives to this ? I may be wrong but it seems way too pricey for a cover.

ok that seems pretty out of place... I would recommend argue with them that breaking during transportation should be covered by warranty because it's not because of the user's poor handling and see how they respond, otherwise... you may have to live with it..

I actually did the first time they mentioned during the other repair but they maintained their stance. At this point i guess ill wait until wesbites pop up with extra parts because it seems the price is high in order for them to sell more warranties. Oh well . Thanks for the help tho.

Optimus should be handled automatically. UEFI should allow for faster boot-up times (and anything else involving shutting down/booting up/hibernation, etc). I personally think that you should give Windows 8 more of a chance. Heck, look up Classic Shell. It's pretty much the Windows 7 start menu on Windows 8. I also find that 8 is snappier with just about everything it does. And if it's not, there's usually a tweak for it.

I had the screen for a while and thought I'd be fine with it. I'm at the point where I could live with it, but if there's better out there then I'd rather not. So I ordered a replacement IPS. I'll be sure to post back in the Replacement Displays thread about my experiences with it.

hey guys, I have something to ask here.

for those league/dota/CSGO or any online game players.

if you are experiencing stuttering issues, can you monitor your CPU clockspeed while gaming sometimes?

from what I've heard, the chinese models have their bios throttling the CPU on purpose even under 65C, and this is not just turning off turbo boost, this is actual throttling to like 1.8ghz, but so far it's most noticeable on the i5 models however.

so just to confirm that we won't be affected, can people check when playing onlines game whether the cpu throttles or not? if it's just turning off turbo then that's fine, but if it goes below the base clock 2.4ghz then it should indicate something.

the reason I asked for those games particularly is that those are more CPU extensive games so it would occur more likely.

@ATG can you also check this?

Do you have a higher refresh rate monitor? Because there's not much point in rendering more fps than your screen can completely display. But you probably already know that. This has been discussed plenty of times before, so no need to again.

Why do identical videos played on FF skip but on IE they are smooth as glass? I'd much rather use FF but IE simply provides a smoother experience.

    Hi,
just received my y50 4k. I can't find information on how did you guys solve the problem with the colors. My colors keep dynamically shifting, they are blunt on normal screen (yellow is very dark for example) but when I google "yellow" and open images, then the colors shift to normal and it shows yellow properly (i can actually see the colors change with my eye). I wonder what the problem is, can you please advise?

    Cheers,
    Yetti

    I don't have these games...
Lately I've played HL2(+EP1 and EP2), Sleeping Dogs, Fallout3, Shadow Warrior. Everything on highest settings except Sleeping Dogs(High/Extreme combo). The only problem I've seen playing this games is freeze/audio stutter in HL2 games but only when I quick save or pass a loading screen.

I attach a log from HWinfo64 while playing Sleeping Dogs for a few minutes. No stuttering, FPS 40-60.
    View attachment hwinfo64.zip
    View attachment hwinfo64-2.zip

I also tried some CS:Source and again, no stuttering. HWinfo64's log is pretty much the same as the one from Sleeping Dogs.

    Dear All,

unfortunately something bad happened to my Y50 (hongkong edition). Last week, i left my y50 at home for a vacation for 4 days (Sleep mode), nothing happened at first but then when i came back the battery is dropped to 15%. I am using to open mail, facebook etc until there was a notification for connect the charger (arround 5% battery left). Then i went to my room to get the charger, but when i came back my laptop is already turned off.
Short Story, my laptop failed to charge, power on, and no problem with my charger.

Next day, i went to lenovo service in Indonesia (I am indonesian) and too bad they didnt accept my y50 because it is not supported in my country, they early prediction was something wrong with the motherboard . They asked me to check at the nearest supported country which is singapore. well. since i dont have time (and money) to go to singapore only for repairing this laptop. The real reason is not found yet, next week probably i will take a visit to singapore lenovo service centre.

The objective of this post is to pay attention since i am the first victim of this thingy. Dont know why it happened, hopefully i am the first and the last victim.

Call back and ask to speak to a supervisor - Lenovo's initial pricing is always sky high .. For instance, we've been quoted $399 for replacing a display, and then a supervisor changed it to $99. Incredible mark-up they try to do on customers initially unfortunately.

What is the maximum resolution of an external display that the Y50 can support? Can it run a 4K external display at 60 Hz? What about 2560 x 1440?

only 30hz with 4k. hdmi 1.4 is the bottleneck.
don't know the highest refresh rate possible at 1080p.
but it can surely handle 60hz 1080p.

so i just watched downloaded dota2 tinker replays for 3 and half hours settings are in ultra with extended screen to monitor temps and cpu. i just want to see what is causing the screen freeze in the game.

    here are my results

temps were 65 for cpu and 60 for gpu for the whole test.

3.3ghz were only on when I start up the y50 upto 3 mins of my 1st replay then throttle to 2.4ghz and only went back to 3.3ghz when I close dota2..
cpu only stayed at 2.4ghz for a good 5 to 15 mins of each replays then throttle to 1.7ghz till the end of each replays then go back to 2.4ghz while on main menu.

at 2.4ghz dota2 is solid 60fps no matter how insane the fights were. vsync on.
at 1.7ghz on fights fps drops upto 30 to 50 and on laning stage 50 to 60 fps. vsync on.

no screen freeze for the whole test so . I still dont know whats causing it in game maybe wifi or hdd?

I'm thinking about buying an SSD and I know I need a SATA III 2.5", but what dimensions does it need to be? It seems the crucial 2.5" is a different size than the2.5" 840 EVO. Is the 840 evo the only ssd drive that will fit?

Is the Dualcore cooler than the Quadcore? Thanks!
