Do you uninstall the old drivers before attempting to install the new ones? I thought it would just overwrite the old driver but I can't seem to get the drivers I downloaded to install

You don't need to unplug the battery, so long as you don't turn the laptop on while you're replacing it. If you do, it shouldn't cause too many problems but these SATA drives weren't meant for hotswapping so it'd be better to not do it.

You should be able to just install over the original ones. Is there a message saying anything when you try to install the new ones? What exactly happens?

I don't know what I tried to do before but I got it to work this time, thanks anyways

anyone using throttle stop care to take a screenshot of the settings you are using? I tried reading some guides online but I wasn't able to figure it out. Ideally I'd like the best performance I can get with still decent battery life

well, i've received this 3200x1800 IGZO panel and it is 40 pin edp... however y50 4k cable looks a little wider (despite being 40 pin as well), so this panel is a no go for y50... also this panel is side mounted, whilst y50 4k screen is top / bottom mounted :(
oh well, now I just need to find a laptop to stick this screen into.

That depends on which card was advertised with your exact model number. if you go through this forum you can see that some people got different wifi card, and you might be one of them. i got mine through the lenovo website and it was advertised with the 3160 card and thats what i got when i recieved my computer.

Only speed will be gained if you throw the card fast and buy a new one.

Any tips on an external battery for this laptop?
Would be nice if it has almost the same Amp(6.75 I think?) so it can charge as fast as the charger. Or at least close.

Several bugs with this laptop in W7.

Laptop stutters, respond delay, no advanced option in the intel configuration settings (i had this option in W8)
    Terrible HDD..

Like changing tab in chrome takes 1 sec.. very annoying

    And look at this:

    http://i.imgur.com/zY2cIEW.jpg
Bottom of the screen is a lot more bright.

Used just a full purple background:
    http://i.imgur.com/sqwX8X8.jpg

Is this normal or just me..?

Thanks for answer about the SSD for HDD exchange. I called authorized Lenovo support and they told me that I can exchange it on my own. The only thing they warned me about was, that if I should break anything on cover, I would have to pay for it (which is obvious)

I exchanged the SSD and all works perfectly. So thanks ^^

Oh and I was wondering what CPU/GPU temperatures are you guys reaching while gaming? Today after 5 hours of guildwars2, I checked and the max CPU temperature was 75°, max GPU temperature was 71°. I read that this temperatures are fine for haswell processors (my unit has i5-4200h). Do correct me if im wrong ^^

    With best regards,
    Leafberry

I actually had a question about GPU temps when I'm playing diablo 3 and dota 2 with maxed out settings I'm reaching almost 90C is this normal? I played AC4 and I was in 90-95 range regardless of settings. This is my 2nd y50 since I was having issues with the first one. The only issue I have with this one is the GPU temps compared to everyone else my temps are way higher.

Will tell you when I test on diablo or dota.

None. It's limited by hardware to 48Hz. I tend to be pretty picky about those things but honestly...it doesn't bother me at all! Unless you're gonna use as your main gaming rig without an external monitor, it's not that bad. I use it for programming and gaming on the go so I much more prefer the 4K IPS over 60Hz. If your focus is more on gaming, go for the 1080P-model and replace the screen with a 1080P IPS from ebay.

Out of curiousity...CnK011214 ...how is the performance of ac4 on your notebook? I have it installed on mine but i got fps in the range of 30-50. This alone wouldn't be a problem, but i got some serious frame drops. Seems to me that there are some "mini-freezes".

Well I installed the SSD into my computer, then made an bootale windows 8.1 thumb drive. Went to bios, set boot device as USB. Everything else was a standar procedure.

I will try to install AC4 as well and will report back on how it works. How is otherwise heat issue at your computer? Does it also reach 95° like his does?

I've tried reading through the whole thread, but I have ended up with conflicting views. I want to get the Y50, but I'm not sure which version. Here's what I've seen so far

    FHD Non-Touch
    -----------------
Chi-Mei or AUO Display (Chi-Mei is worse)
Vertical Angle Viewing is arguably bad
    Replaceable with better display

    FHD Touch
    -----------------
Chi-Mei or AUO Display (Chi-Mei is worse)
Vertical Angle Viewing is arguably bad
    Unsure if screen is replaceable

    UHD 4K Non-Touch
    ---------------------------
IPS Display (Good except for the yellows)
4K encounters many problems with scaling, black bars, etc.., but can be changed to 1080p

I'm really conflicted on if I should get the FHD Touch or UHD 4K Non-Touch.

    1) I really wanted to get a touch screen laptop, but if the screen is so bad would it be better to get the non-touch version?

    2) If I bought the Touch Screen version, is it possible to replace it with a better TOUCHSCREEN (not a non-touch screen)?

    3) Is the touchscreen acceptable for a casual user and light gamer (not doing any digital media work) due to the bad screen?

    4) Is the screen on the non-touch version easily replaceable and if so does it void the warranty?

    Thanks

I've read comments on how people achieve scores of 4800+ in 3DMark 11, in Fire Strike.

I have the y50-70 4K UHD touch screen, with 16 GB RAM, GTX 860M 2 GB, 256 SSD.
I've configured power settings to performance, Physx to point the GTX card, installed the latest nvidia drivers (340), and I can only get a score of 3600 in 3DMark 11.

    Is there anything I'm missing?

So I'm starting to warm up to the idea of a 48Hz 4K display since I don't game with this as often as I'd like atm.. I understand it's a hardware issue but is there a possibility a 4k 60hz display could be sold so that I could manually insert? Finally are there 4k 48Hz panels being sold as well? When I read statements like the 4K panel for this model is superior to even a mac retina display and on par or even better than the XPS 15 display, I cannot help but take notice!!

    3dmark 11 is 3dmark 11, fire strike is 3dmark13.

3600 in fire strike is pretty normal, p4800 is about the 3dmark11 score

    Which one do you recommend?

Yes, I know but I'm not asking about the screen, I'm asking if somebody tried/owned both laptops and which one in general is better?
I'm afraid the Y50 looks too "gamer-ish" and is not suitable for work.

About my complaints about the wifi adapter earlier: it seems the router was the problem. A asus AC router doesn't provide stable speed at all on wireless, speed with cable is perfect all the time.

    1) I was set on getting the touchscreen laptop. I barely use the touchscreen capabilities, but if I could do it again I would still go with touchscreen for a couple of reasons: edge-to-edge glass, and the ability to use touchscreen capability for software that utilize it IF software is made for it.

    2) AFAIK, no one has really replaced the touchscreen, only the non-touch.

    3) It's perfectly fine for everyday use. With FHD, the vertical viewing angles become a nuisance if you're constantly shifting your position, but adjusting the screen angle will fix it. If you're on the couch, it's more annoying since you're always adjusting your posture for comfort, but on a desk my position tends to be more constant, so the issue pops up far less frequently. As for the UHD, if yellow accuracy isn't important to you (for web browsing and light gaming, it isn't an issue for me), then the UHD is perfectly fine.

    4) I don't have experience in this, but I'd check the Y50 screen replacement thread.

I owned both the FHD and UHD Touch, and returned the FHD since the UHD had superior viewing angles. The FHD had better yellows, but I'd rather have better viewing angles then yellow accuracy.

Alexandar: do you get the internet speed you pay for when sitting close to the router? Use speedtest.net. I don't, and no other computer get the speed or the stability of speed we pay for. The network strength is full both 1 meter from the router and on floor up. The speed sucks on both locations.

I am unable to install windows using the recovery usb drive option could this have anything to with the fact that my SSD has a lower capacity (256gb) than the original preinstalled 1TB hdd, if so should I just clone the original drive and start saving for a 1tb SSD :(

I tried this and it didn't help with GPU temps I'm starting to think something might be wrong with the GPU either the heatsink or fan. When I play diablo or dota in window mode the temps are lower around 65-75ish but when it's full screen high 85-95. Looks like I'm going to have to send this one in for repairs -_- such a hassle unless someone knows something.

repaste it yourself, honestly factory applied paste usually means at least +10c on temps. I've repasted with Gelid GC Extreme and my temps never go above 65c on GPU (thats with overclock of +135mhz on gpu and +500mhz on memory). CPU maxes out a bit higher at around 78-80c, (overclocked and undervolted via xtu)

Honestly if I knew how to do it I would but I don't think I'm that comfortable with repasting it. I did the SSD myself but that was really easy just opening the back and unscrewing like 8 screws plug and play. The gpu seems a bit more difficult.

its really not that much more difficult than replacing the ssd. you need to:
    open the back panel (which you've already done before to get to ssd);
    - unscrew the heatsink screws (they are numbered in the order they should be screwed in when it comes to re-attaching the heatsink. btw y50 shares the same heatsink for both cpu and gpu, you dont need to touch the fans either, they are a separate unit in y50);
    - once you have the heatsink removed you need to clean the old thermal compound from both the heatsink and the CPU + GPU
    - when old compound is completely removed apply about a pea sized drop of thermal compound to the shiny part of the GPU & CPU (gelid gc xtreme seems one of the better compounds, its also not electro conductive so no worries if some spills over);
    - reattach the heatsink, screwing in the screws in the numbered order (this ensures the compound spreads evenly)
    ..and thats it :)

also, lifting the back of the laptop an inch or so further reduces temps by a fair bit.. I couldnt help but notice that there is a lot of space between the heatsink and the back panel, which probably means we could further improce thermal performance by attaching come copper heatsinks + removing the mesh grill on the underside of the laptop. Might give that a go when we have unlocked bios as at the moment there isnt much point as thermal performance seems pretty good.

If anyone can answer these questions, it would be greatly appreciated!

    1) How is the scaling on the 4K Version? What I mean is, when you set the resolution to 1080p and fix the font and icons, do games and applications conform well to the screen's new settings or is there blurriness?

    2) Is the battery life on the 4K Version shorter?

    3) Is there a problem with flickering?

    4) Are the yellows really as bad as people make them out to be?

Again, I really appreciate any help I can get. I tried searching through the thread, but I keep getting conflicting answers.
