I'm not really sure as I mostly use my laptop plugged in, but I read somewhere that you shouldn't let it die all the way, because you'd be then killing a 'charge cycle'.
-
There is a conservation mode in Lenovo settings. Activate that if you mainly run plugged in, and it will save a lot on the battery life span.
-
I know about that. However, thats not really my problem. Im trying to get the most battery life on batter, and i am really confused at the battery life im getting when i am running 40-50% brightness, off or dim keyboard lights on. But thanks for your input.Luterin likes this.

After some more testing, I played a game of league on power saver mode, No battery plugged in, my CPU temps went to 55C Max, and GPU temps max at 44C. Im guessing these are pretty good. BTW forgot to mention i have the i7 4720, 4gb 960m, 16gb ram version
Edit again: Just played a game of league on battery on power saver. CPU went up to 75C, while GPU went to 55CLast edited: Jun 19, 2015 -
Make sure it's the 960M being used because these temps for the GPU are too low, and as for myself I game on high performance mode, that's what I bought the laptop for. For browsing internet, watching movies and anything else I use Green Mode. Try a more demanding game and see how it goes.
-
Isn't it good that the temperatures are low? And im pretty sure its using the gpu because i set the geforce experience to run at 60fps after i found out that it was locked at 30 while on battery. As of now, i dont have any more intensive games to run because i have yet to download them, but i will post results for when i do. Im mostly concerned about the cpu temperatures. Though i know its not considered that high, i would want it lower.
How much battery do you get when you are on green mode btw? And how much of a difference is it compared to power saver mode? -
Of course it's good, you don't need to worry as long as you're below 90C. As for battery life, I still actually haven't used it unplugged so I don't know. Enjoy your machine!
-
Every now and then, my Y50 can't use its battery. That is, it won't start without the adapter plugged and unplugging the adapter while the laptop's on makes it turn right off. I can fix this temporarily by opening up the case, unplugging the battery itself, waiting, and plugging it in again. That usually works except that the adapter stops charging every now and then.
Any help pinpointing the issue(s)? What could I get replaced by the warranty? Thanks so much. -
How old is your laptop? i just got mine like 2 days ago on wednesday, and i asked lenovo a bunch of questions about return policies and replacements for defects. Though they didnt really give me a straight answer haha. I also saw a guy dissassemble the battery on a youtube video, so i think you can replace it if you find the right one. Sorry, im new too haha.
-
Anyone know why my Netflix Videos does not seem to be playing at 1080p?
-
My Y50 will be a year old in a month or two. Seriously, not knowing whether or not it's safe to unplug the thing is freaky. Just had to unscrew the thing again after like, less than two days. Blarg.
Check your Netflix playback settings is all I can think of. -
Netflix is only 1080p when using Internet Explorer.. https://help.netflix.com/en/node/23742
-
I am using Chrome for Netflix.
-
Also, I am stuttering in a simple web browser game called Agar.io
My previous laptop ran that smoothly. It was a samsung series 3 with 16gb ram, 2gb amd radeon 7730(i think forgot), 2.4 ghz -
Yeah I kinda figured it out after a while with it. Anyway, so I was having a little free time yesterday so I decided to open up my laptop again. I remembered one of the problems you mentioned included having the heatsink not screwed on properly. So instead of unscrewing it, I tried screwing them in harder to try and see if they went any further in, this way I would know if they had come loose over time. But gladly, that wasn't the case. They were all screwed in as tightly as possible. So I can safely say that this isn't the case. As for the threadlock, I found a very thin layer of it on the screws of my back panel, but not on the heatsink. The heatsink screws only had a spring on them.
So anyway, I thought MAYBE I did a bad job of repasting and did it again. I'm still not convinced however, I put some and then I removed some and I still had a bad feeling about it. ****, I never knew this could be so stressful. The fact that I have OCD only makes this much worse.
The temperatures haven't improved either. 10 minutes of BF3 on Ultra and the temps reach 95-****in-*C. This is horrible.
Can I get this RMA'd? My brother bought this laptop in the US using a friend's credit card, and gave it to me when he came to India in December. He's back in the US now. It hasn't even been a year since it has been purchased, so can I get this replaced? The Y50 is covered by the International Warranty Service right? How do I get on with the whole process?Last edited: Jun 25, 2015 -
I just got one of these and have been having a problem with the "A" key not working unless I make sure its pressed super hard, is that normal? Also is there a good way to calibrate the screen for free... I have the touch 1080p TN panel and my yellows are looking kinda mustard (I thought that was only the 4k display problem). Also what is the general battery life on balanced, I think mine is draining rather quickly... then again I am downloading a lot of stuff...
-
Isnt the touch model an ips glossy display? I also feel you on that battery, i am getting a lot less than many people on green mode, low brightness, and backlight off. Like 2:00-2:30. Its ridiculous on such settings
-
Ah, ok, glad I am not the only one who is getting bad battery life. As for the screen being IPS... pretty sure its TN, the viewing angles from side to side are good, but vertically they are pretty bad.
-
Yeah, i already chatted with some people from lenovo about my problem, they told me some weird stuff to do like, charge the laptop for 6 hours straight, and another one told me to charge it for 12 hours straight. But they also told me if i am still having crappy battery life, they would be willing to replace the laptop for me. Also, if you check the first post on the first page, the dude posted a video of his y50, its the touch model, it looks pretty good to me haha.

Recently, whenever I start up a game called Starbound, I end up getting this POWER_DRIVER_STATE_FAILURE blue screen. It only happens with Starbound, so I'm wondering if the game is the problem. It's really weird because it never happened until a couple of months ago. Sometimes it happens, and sometimes the game runs just fine. Are my drivers out of date? The Device Manager is useless for checking updates on my drivers. 90% of the time it says my drivers are up to date, and when I check online, they actually aren't.
I checked Lenovo's driver page for this build, but it seems like I don't have a few of the drivers listed, and I don't know if they're necessary.
I noticed I have this Unknown Driver listed under "Other Drivers", and I have no idea what it is. Maybe that's the problem? I checked the properties and this path file came up:
%SystemRoot%\System32\setupapi.dll,-18
I would appreciate any help you guys could provide, because it's really getting annoying.
I'm also getting concerned about the amount of dust building up in my computer. I've yet to get it cleaned because the store I got it from is a decent distance from our house and the price to get it cleaned is around $39 or something like that. I wish the only source of air filter for this laptop wasn't on the bottom of the computer, which seems counterproductive. -
How new is yours? My warranty is up in October but if they offer me to swap the battery, I'd happily do it. The only issue though is that I don't think they cover shipping to then, so there goes $50 right there.
The panel is TN for sure, but to me its not worth swapping out as its only used when on the road and my smaller laptop/tablet just won't cut it. -
I got my laptop last wednesday. I was using my old laptop today for school, and it lasted longer on high performace than my y50 on power saver/green mode. Pretty dissapponted. Ima try resetting the battery one last time, and see if that does anything. But i love everything else about this laptop. Though it stutters in a simple web browser game called agario, no idea why, my old laptop runs it smooth.
-
In that case, I am doubtful they will replace my battery after almost 10 months, lol. As for the studdering, try forcing your gpu to be on while playing the flash game. I think you can do that via the nvidia settings. -
I have, but it still stutters.

Hi, i have the lenovo y50 with i7-4720, 16gb ram, 4gb 960. I want to use throttle stop, but i have no idea how it works. Can someone who has the same spec laptop as mine that uses throttlestop help me with what is the best settings to have things on? thanks
-
Anybody have problems with the audio volume sometimes fluctuating through dobly digital?
Also there are times when the speakers stop working waking up from sleep but the sub woofer. -.- -
Yes and yes.
The audio fluctuation thing could be caused by other open applications, check what you have configured in Sounds->Communication.
The "no sound after wake up" issue happens from time to time, restart fixes it. Since I have an SSD the issue doesn't bother me so much so I did not troubleshoot this any further. It's a known issue, probably caused by the drivers(most likely the Dolby part because with Dolby disabled the problem does not appear), however Lenovo hasn't released a newer version so far and you can't use generic updated drivers because the Dolby won't work and the audio is pretty bad without it. -
There is a new BIOS available for Y50, dated 6/25/2015
-
This started to happening like two months ago, definitely new SW problem they brought with some update. -
In my case I noticed it almost right after I bought the laptop so around 9 months ago. W7 x64 Pro.

Hello guys.
I've got a few questions regarding the Y50.
I plan on getting one soon enough, but don't know which version.
I don't want a QHD model, way too expensive and not worth it. I saw the FHD's TN display in person and it's ok, better than my current laptop anyway.
So, I have 2 choices :
- A model with an i7, 8GB of RAM and a 1TB HDD
- Another model with an i5 (4210H), 4GB of RAM and a 500GB HDD + 8GB SSD.
Is the i7-4710HQ worth $150 over an i5 4210H?
I know it's 4c/8th compared to 2c/4t, at least. -
The problem with the Y50 is that it disables Intel Turbo Boost, especially when gaming. I do not own an i7-4720 but here is an example of how the program should look to fix this specific problem.
http://i.imgur.com/yPE1zkb.png
Set Multiplier should be checked and set to the highest value. I like to disable BD PROCHOT. C1E is not important. If ThrottleStop says Monitoring in the title bar, you need to click on the Turn On button at the lower right corner so it can actively work on keeping your CPU running at the Intel rated speed and that's about it.
ThrottleStop 8.00 has overclocking and voltage control features for the newer CPUs in the FIVR window. This is for the more advanced users. If you have any questions, head to the ThrottleStop thread and ask away but first, take some time and learn the basics.Last edited: Jun 29, 2015 -
If you want to save the money, go for the i5. And doesnt the i5 come with 8gb of ram? Me and my friend both bought a y50 around the same time. I got the i7-4720 and he got the i5. It runs well. He likes it.
-
Um, I'm sorry but did you miss my reply?
-
Yeah, actually I did, I went back now and checked. Well I can't help you much with warranty - I bought it locally and we have 2 years warranty. International warranty is 1 year as far as I know.
Yes you could RMA it, but I have some doubts if they'll accept it in this case. Unless it's going into shutdown or some noticeable heatdamage, it is hard to prove this.
Walk me throught it again - you play BF3, got Vsync on, something like high details, your CPU max is 95C and your GPU is...?
Did you try to use Throttlestop? Because with full turboboost, 95C on CPU is not that strange honestly, I could go to 90s too after some time for sure. -
Hello!
I recently bought a Y50-70 with I7 4710HQ and GTX 860m 4gb,i updated to the latest bios version when I got it.Now I see a update for bios from 25/06 but i don't really have the courage to update..Does anyone know if only fix "HAMMER Memory BIOS security issue" and doesn't broke another things/or maybe come with more fixes and improvements(that's what i wonder) ? Thank you.
-
Hey guys,
current lenovo y470 owner, got it 4 years ago and time to change.
Need your advice.
I'm thinking either y50 with i7, 8gb ram, 960m (4gb vram) and 256gb ssd (since it has no msata/m.2), plus i do have 2tb wd passport external. I can get it for 755 usd
Or G551JW-CN099D i7-4720HQ/8GB/750GB/DVD-RW GTX960 for 895 usd. If it has msata/m.2 i'll probably take it, if not i probably go with y50.
I read some reviews that y50 during gaming middle and top of laptop gets hot. is it true? because i do game in bed with laptop on my lap.
Also it seems in y50 thread there is a lot of posts, way more than in 551jw, kind of silly, but is y50 is more problematic? what are the main negatives of y50?
Thank you in advance
-
My GPU max is also 90-91, not very far off from the CPU.
Yes I do, set multiplier to 28, disabled Turbo.
Well I'm surprised it's getting this hot because only around 4-5 months ago I played BF4 on Ultra settings with the CPU maxing out at just 76 *C. It didn't even cross 80 *C even though I played for over 2 hours continuously. I really want those sub-80 temperatures back. I don't remember doing any huge changes to my laptop to cause the drastic increase in temperature.
Also, yes I was thinking this isn't really a problem I can show them, it's just a high temperature, I have NEVER had any thermal shutdowns, maybe that's because I always stop the game when the CPU hits 97 or 98 *C. Is there anything I can do? -
I would go for the y50. If your getting the ssd, then it would be better that the 750gb hhd. I dont know how much vram the g551 has but if its 2, the the y50 would be better because you are getting more for what you pay. Awesome deal though for 755$. is it used? and if its off the lenovo website, isnt it usualy 16bg ram with the 4gb 960m? if the i7 on the lenovo is also the 4720, id go for the lenovo. If the g551 is a 6 cell battery, you will probably get a little more battery time with that if that is what you are looking for, because the y50 has a 4 cell battery. Sorry im jumping around a lot. I have the y50 right now, the i7 4720. 16gb, 4gb 960m. hhd tho. But it is awesome. I mostly play league, so i get good fps on battery with balanced mode. doesnt really get hot at all for me. you can see my temps on one of my post like 3-4 pages back. However, i am returning it because my old laptop decided to work again haha. So if my old laptop was still broken, i would definitly keep it, but since my old laptop is working again. im gonna stick with it a bit longer and probably wait for maybe lenovos next model. All in all i would go for the y50 for the money. sorry my for my ramblings and jumping around haha.
-
Man, any advice here won't be the best one.
I took one of my older laptops (MSI) to RMA because of heating too much and they replaced GPU and paste, it was OK after it.
Unless you don't wanna spend more time on repasting over and over again, I'd do the same, but you are risking they will not accept it. But I guess you have nothing to lose, so go for it. You can always tinker with it later if they will not do anything under warranty. -
Hey guys
I have Lenovo y5070 with I7 4720 and GTX 960
One Key Recovery app doesn't work and even when I press on novo button to access recovery it gives me a message that the one key recovery partition is damaged although I haven't touched it
I only resized the windows partition without touching any partition related to recovery
So please can any one give me a pic of his partition layout through eases partition master to see if it's the same as me or not
-
Unfortunately, resizing Windows partition causes One Key Recovery to fail. Honestly to me this One Key Recovery thing is useless, I re-partitioned my hard drive when I got my laptop and even deleted the recovery partition, I know I'll probably never use it. Enjoy this beast!mido.fayad likes this.

Thanks for the reply
But the recovery item self couldn't even start and said recovery partition is damaged
I already restored it to work on old z510 and restored one key recovery partition but even before restoring the whole partition, I was able to enter recovery and see one key recovery screen then it fails in restoring
But here I can't even see it
Any way I don't use it alot but it's really a very bad app of Lenovo and I will try to fix itRainMan_ likes this. -
I can't sleep when some thing annoying me
I just fixed this stupid problem and now I can use one key recovery again after reasizng windows partitions
It's just that resizing partitions changes partitions id so we need to revert it back to stock ones
I will write how to so that any one can fix this stupid problemtreffnix likes this. -
I finally got this laptop only to see a horror. The wifi is extremely slow, however when connected through the wire it get normal speed. Anyone has a clue how to fix this?
-
I see.
Fine then, I guess I'll do one last proper repaste, and if it still doesn't change anything, I'll give it for RMA.
Thanks for your help! -
Are the drivers updated? If you just got the laptop, are you sure its not downloading updates in the background... that can slow down speeds significantly.
-
Hi all,
Several days ago both my USB 3.0 ports on the left side of my Lenovo Y50 have stopped working. I got an error message saying
"Error: Power Surge On Hub Port: A USB device has exceeded the power limits of its hub port"
Now I know this happened because I accidently tried to input pendrive the wrong end and must've short-circuted it. Yeah I know it sounds stupid but this pendrive looks exactly the same on both ends!
Anyway, my first question - is it repairable? I know that there is just no power in those ports. I chekced that by connecting my 3,5" external HDD to the port and it didn't work. When I connected another external HDD that had his own power supply - it is working fine.
My second question is - if I buy USB hub that has it's own external power supply (like the 2nd external drive I mentioned) will it work? Thanks
-
Hi, its definetly not the speed as when i connect to the hard wire i get full speeds. Which drivers to download? i tried various ones from lenovo website. In office I get 54mbps on other laptops, but on this its about 18mbps, any solution?
-
It is brand new. 970 usd is original price in Poland, but because Poland is in European Union, and i do live outside of european union, i can claim back 23% of sales tax, so it comes down to around 750 usd. Its from major Poland electronics retailer called x-kom. And yes it is 4720... Y50-70 i7-4720HQ/8GB/256 GTX960M.
Battery is not a problem, i do not used it, i'm plugged in 99% of the time.
My initial plan was go on vacation in my native Lithuania, and right after go to Poland for few days to buy Y50-70 i7-4720HQ/8GB/256 GTX960M... but my y470 is so badly broken that i'm probably not going to go to Poland, and just buy y50 i5-4210H / 8GB / 1TB /960M 2GBvram for 775 usd (well with tax claim back for 596usd) in my country. Which is also a good price for this configuration... because its usually goes for 995 usd, but is now on sale.
I also can get y50 i7-4720HQ , 8GB ram, 1TB, 960m 4GBvram which is not on sale, for 1113 usd (with tax claim for 857)... but i dont think its worth it to spend 271 usd more for 4720qm and 960m 4gbVram vs i5 4210h and 960m 2gb Vram.
So the dillema... what yall think....?
y50 i5-4210H / 8GB / 1TB /960M 2GBvram for 596usd
or
y50 i7-4720HQ , 8GB ram, 1TB, 960m 4GBvram for 857 usd
