I used the pea method I think, It was actually a different kind of a blob because I couldn't just make it into one big drop, I had to do it again, and then remove some, and so on. So yeah then as themillen suggested, try repasting again. You might have accidentally done it wrong.
Good luck!
-
I will do exacly what You said and we will see
I have 1 problem, becouse i think GPU is not square, its rectangle, how to apply paste on that? -
The rectangle one is the CPU, not GPU. The square one is the GPU and it will have the word Nvidia and something else printed on it.
Well just put a thin line on the rectangle, that's what I did. -
It gave it a good bit of a thump if I left it on my desk.
Really wish I could get it working again. -
there is no y50 kepler version. 860m kepler cards are mxm socketed; the 860m in the y50 is soldered to the board.
-
well, i used a soft bristle toothbrush soaked in isopropyl to clean my old dell laptop. flicked off all the paste that was stuck in between the pins ( i did a poor job pasting the first time). let it dry, repaste and it's running smoothly now.
-
I personally don't know, but several review sites claim that the first revision of the Y50 were Kepler based.
-
There are both Kepler and Maxwell 2 GB 860m. GK104 and GM107. Best way to check, if you have the machine, is with GPU-Z.
My y50-70 has the 2 GB Maxwell anyway, not sure if the older y50 (without the 70) used the Kepler one, perhaps. -
if you have a throw away credit card (ie old hotel card or similar) you can do the spread method. ONLY if you have steady hands and sometimes it can take a couple trys. basically you do what applying even pressure does with the pea sized method. basically you use a pea sized drop, then spread a VERY THIN layer across the entire die EVENLY. with that method it is of great importance that when placing the heatsink down u do it directly where it is to stay, that is to say where all the holes match up and will not have to slide so as not to create air bubbles or pockets. generally it is recommended only for the experienced techs but with practice.. well you know
but as someone state you can do a thin line in the center of the rectangle (going long ways) i just find that if not thin enough will be too much, or it spreads to all once side and not enough for the others.
When i first got it i was actually going to do a video guide, but im finding it hard to bring myself to do. My temps (Even after oc'ing the gpu to max core oc and memory +350) have been great, so maybe in the future.
You never did say which thermal paste you were using, mind sharing? Also when you repaste please let me know the temps after
Last question i guess i had for you, are you running latest BIOS?
All in all after having the laptop for a little under a week, im thoroughly happy with it. And Lenovo gets my kudos for giving me a free upgrade from my y510p. (basically had ADP + inhome 3 year warranty and i dropped it and cracked the screen as well as screwing the corner up the lcd assembly) and as far as performance increase from the y510p to the 2015 y50... light years better.
FFXIV Heavensward Benchmark... doubled! .
That was taken before i upgraded to 16gb of RAM as well!
The only gripe i had was user provided and i was eating up all my ram with chrome and steam and other various programs i always have open, but once i popped in the other 8gb stick i bought, went from 74-88% used at all times to 28-38% (makes no sense but hey!)
I take that back, i do have one major gripe that WAS lenovo's fault. The stock SSHD provided is utter crap, either by Firmware or Lenovo's energy management, but its a DOG i find it hard to believe that a WD Black drive with 8gb of ssd cache would be so slow on its own (plan on using it in a refurbished laptop ill be selling in my shop so i can tell if it really is the drive or a combo i mentioned a bit ago.
But HIGHLY recommend if not stress the importance of throwing an SSD in its place. I only managed 2 hours with the provided drive before throwing in a nice 850 evo 500gb
EASY EASY process, basically back up any data (no cloning needed) or if you have an external enclosure or dock you can do that after. Basically open up control panel, do a search for recovery, and click recovery. and click create recovery drive and just follow the prompts. that will copy the ENTIRE recovery partition to a flash drive and after you install the new ssd just boot from the flash drive and follow the steps and itll be back just like how you bought it (after initial setup of inputing information) and copy youre user data back onto it and VOILA nothing a few hours in an evening cant solve
But after playing some GTA V, Diablo III, Rocksmith, and Alien Isolation with mostly high settings at VERY Respectable fps, i can say this laptop is LIGHT YEARS ahead of the y510p. I was honestly considering selling the y510p prior to the accident to upgrade myself, but in the end Lenovo did that for me
And i couldn't be happier. This laptop may not match my i7/980 ti home desktop, but for on the go/office/vacation gaming, productivity, etc it is a much better companion than i couldve hoped. I may replace the IPS with a better quality but as of right now, i can say that after the ssd and ram upgrade i think ive finally found a laptop that will calm my upgrade itch for another couple of years
wow this help/rant has gone on long enough, if anyone has questions or wants me to bench anything just let me know!m1ko likes this. -
looks like this guy used electrical tape to prevent the paste from getting on undesirable regions.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...tips-before-i-start.741745/page-5#post9520969 -
Ah I see. I'll do that next time then.
Apparently, that will be soon.
My happiness was short-lived. My temperatures are hitting the 90s again when I'm playing Skyrim on very high settings. I have a very important download running on uTorrent though, so I'm wondering if maybe that's the reason. Because the first time I checked the temperatures right after repasting I wasn't running uTorrent. Maybe I'll check again after turning off uTorrent just to be sure. -
Im using MX-2 paste, i checked reviews and it was quite good one.
I will try repasting again today and will post back results.
But i think its something wrong with voltage, my CPU is using very high voltage even when idle, why is that?
@up
I had exacly same thing before, 1st day after repasting was great, but later everything went back to high temps... -
are you using the latest version of uttorent? if that's the case I highly suggest you to install another free as in libre alternative:
the latest utorrent versions have a hidden bitcoin miner, which can't be disabled.
If you don't know what a bitcoin miner is, it's a program that does very complicated calculations, that fully use your GPU (more than any game ever could),leading to increased temperatures, and component stress. -
Yes I am, I read that somewhere yeah, but I never really used it much so I had forgotten about it. But I quit utorrent and the temps were same, does the bitcoin miner run even when uTorrent is not running?
-
im guessing youre runninh stock bios? havent messed with voltages? If the chip is running max (or near max) volts at idle then yes that would cause crazy temps. I would check to see if a) on latest BIOS, b) make sure not some rogue software eating cpu cycles, and c) like youre planning to do repaste
lastly it IS possible for chips to degrade and use more voltage over time, but ive only seen that when dealing with overclocking, but i assume in rare cases can happen just over time. -
Okay so I did as you said and uninstalled uTorrent. But 10 minutes of Skyrim has got my temperatures soaring to 97 *C. This is pretty much like it was before I repasted. I am baffled. I don't know what to do now. Why is this happening to me? :'(
-
Im getting 1.1376 - 1.1411 voltage ID in idle... But cant really find something running in background.
The only thing i was doing with voltages was doing a bit underwolting with cpu offset.
My BIOS is 9ECN31WW(v1.14), so are there options to reset ALL BIOS/registry settings apart from formating?
I will do repasting in few minutes, so, for the CPU, use single tin line is best? -
apart from spreading yes, single line
as for voltage on battery my 4720 is using 1.084 for turbo and .8 for when downclocked -
Is there a way for me to fight with that high voltage?
-
you could undervolt, but for me, even being an enthusiast i dont like touching laptops. but others here have said they have done it, but for me i wouldn't but that doesn't mean you wouldn't. personally id contact lenovo, explain it to them. (don't explain you have repasted as yeah, might blow warranty IDK) tell them the temps are out of control, and the voltage required has increased. a mobo/cpu swap may be in order if youre still in warranty. if not, then may look into guide for undervolting.
-
I never said that the bitcoin miner is the only issue. There could be others, but let's try to lower the possibilities, right?
skyrim is not exactly the best coded game in the universe, but still, it should be able to run it fine.
What's your room temperature?
If you open task manager, what process is using CPU the most?
is the laptop on a flat surface, with clear air and space around it?
Do you have the latest BIOS version, and GPU drivers?
have you overclocked your GPU? -
Room temps around 30, if it increases I use my AC occasionally.
Well no process goes beyond 2-3%, which is the Task Manager itself usually. When I'm playing Skyrim it uses around 5% CPU when I'm alt-tabbing and checking the Task Manager. Also, whenever I just open Task Manager after quite a while after I last opened it, it shows an Anti Malware executable using a LOT of CPU, some 30% or more, but it immediately disappears within a half of a second after opening the Task Manager. I've seen that happen many times.
My laptop is actually propped on top of two books, such that the intake vent is open completely.
Yes I updated my BIOS last night, and my GPU drivers have always been up to date.
No, I haven't. -
everything seem right..
maybe check if your antimalware isn't running a virus scan constantly?
and friend.. i didn't want to tell you, but it's likely that you got a defective unit. -
Check this thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/the-throttlestop-guide.531329/
Get the TS software, run it and show us some screenshots. Even when TS is not enabled it serves as a monitoring tool and shows current load on all cores, temperature, VID and other info. -
Im using TS , and i have so sshots from few days, here it goes:
The 1st shot is from today, undervolted by -92mV on offset, surfing internet and 72 degres... -
Hmm, I can't tell from the screenshots if the data shown is ok or not and I don't have that CPU to post comparison shots either. Maybe someone with 4710 can help you out with that.
Did you have the same problems BEFORE using TS? In either case I would also suggest you to ask about your issue in the TS thread, members there have more experience with TS overall and maybe they can suggest to you some changes in TS config to obtain better results. -
Okay I just opened the task manager to check again and there it was, 'Antimalware service executable eating a huge chunk of CPU, but disappeared within half of a second of me opening the Task Manager. Which program does this process belong to? I'll try and stop that program. Also, I just noted that when the laptop isn't charging, the temperatures are very low, under 70 *C, but the game also lags of course, I get like 25 FPS on Ultra in Skyrim. But as soon as I connect the charger, the temperature rises, along with the FPS increase upto 60.
Is this normal? Even the idle temperatures are higher when my laptop is charging.
If this is a defective unit then is it normal that it worked properly for the first three-four months? -
@Sluppo
Probably, when You are not plugged in, You have diferent max/min power for CPU set in settings, so the CPU is not runing at max speed while on battery only. -
What scores do you guys get on Cinebench R15? I am only getting 450 and that seems really low. My CPU is not downclocking.
-
Well how can I know what antimalware you installed?
Just what did you install?
This laptop is known to need to be connected to the power line to play games, so if you want to play, you need an electrical outlet.
of course it's colder when on battery gaming, because it's using less processing power! therefore lower temperature.
could be normal, something might have broke. -
hi,
my mouse settings don't remember
i need to set my bluetooth (logitech) mouse settings again again everytime i restart windows 8.1 (sensitivity and scroll size)
i don't think it's a problem about logitech as my old cable mouse behaves the same. -
I didn't install any antivirus on this laptop myself. The process simply says 'Antimalware service executable'. Probably the Windows Defender, I guess. I'll try disabling it for a while.
-
ye, has to be the Microsoft one.
Are you sure you want to be cruisin the Internet with no protection? -
Just got my y50 uhd , In 4k resolution , 1080p texts or videos doesn't look like HD . Anyway to solve the issue ? Even when I change the resolution to 1080p it doesn't look good .BTW As soon I got the laptop , I installed GTA v , it opened in 1080p and it was crisp and it definitely looked like high definition .But after a day it opened in windowed mode , when i made it fullscreen even it looked like SD only .
-
What are your DPI settings at?
-
I've been doing that for 4-5 years now. I don't click or download anything unless it's a website I can trust 100%.
-
Resolution - 4k
DPI - 250% (ie larger).
Even I reduced my resolution to 1080p and tried various DPI settings from 100% to 200 % still it looks to be same .Last edited: Jun 9, 2015 -
i do the same but you still need an antimalware and antispyware.
Its not like we don't have enough power in this laptop! -
But most free antimalware or antispyware I've tried take up too much RAM and annoy me when I'm playing my game, like they start updating when I'm in the middle of a game causing lag. So I haven't installed any.
I can't decrease the RAM usage of Chrome anyway, so have to cut down on RAM usage everywhere else. If only there was a good browser that didn't take up so much RAM... :'( -
Hi guys, I just received mine today. What's the best way to re-partition the hard drive? It's currently 888Gb for the system partition ( C ) and 25Gb for drivers ( D ). I want to shrink the first one to 80Gb and create another three partitions.
And is it safe to format the hard drive completely? ( I don't mind losing the One Key Recovery )
Thanks in advance!Last edited: Jun 10, 2015 -
If you have temperatures problems again, it might be more things:
- Heatsink may be badly manufactured - ie. surface is not leveled.
- You did not screw down heatsink properly/enough/completely - heatsink screws should have some blue "glue" on screws to make sure they do not unscrew themselves over time. If you do not have it there, I suggest to put some of that blue stuff on heatsink screws and screw it down properly. Blue stuff is called thread lock (for example Loctite 243).
- You should really use TS (Throttlestop) anyway, you cannot ruin anything in your computer with it, ie. you can set it up for running at 2.9 Ghz all the time (there will be no turbo boost and you will have significantly lower temperatures, I have this myself and never get over 80C).
- do you use Vsync in your games? Because if you do not, your hardware is pushing to the max ALL the time, then you will have huge temperatures, especially on turboboost running and HW set on overtime all the time. Use Vsync, inbuilt or some external framelimiter.
- I also have my CPU undervolted by around 65mV. You cannot ruin your CPU with this, worst thing that can happen is BSOD and/or your laptop will shutdown, because CPU won't have enough power. You can just raise voltage by a little and try running some tests until you reach stable undervolt settings. New Throttlestop does support this feature, so you can undervolt and manage CPU clock frequency with this little neat software. Also, TS measures your CPU and GPU temperatures, it got little CPU benchmark inbuilt too. There is nothing to lose, only gain.
If you want, I can help you with setting up TS, I even gave some advice with pictures earlier in this thread.

You just need to see the light of free³ software.
go to ninite.com
choose to install malwarebytes antimalware, spybot search and destroy.
Uninstall chrome, install pale moon, search these addons and install them: unlock origin, encrypted web, request policy.
enjoy your newfound software freedom.
also how's ram a problem in this laptop? the base model has 8Gb, and that's way more than enoughSluppo likes this. -
Are you kidding? Windows defender is complete garbage and is almost as bad as nothing. There are a ton of free anti-virus and anti-malware programs out there that you can disable while gaming. There are even plenty of free after rebate paid programs which are quite excellent.Sluppo likes this.

Thank you for your reply.
I have my exams currently so I'll leave all the stuff that involves opening up my laptop for later.
Yes, I do use VSync on all the games I play. I tried undervolting my CPU through XTU once, 65 mV (read somewhere that this was their sweet spot so I used it too) caused BSODs so I completely removed it, thinking I couldn't avoid it.
I'll download Throttlestop and check stability for various voltages then.
Thanks again for your help, appreciate it very much!
Your temperatures are so low! :O *_*
Also, how do I enable it to use profiles automatically? I've done the exact setup that you've shown in the photos but my profiles change whenever I click the numbers (1,2,3,4). Will it change to the Battery profile automatically when I keep it minimized? Or do I have to manually click 4?
Thanks a lot, installing all of them.
I've searched many times for free software to replace the ones I'm using, but I couldn't find any, weird. Out of all the applications you've suggested I've only heard of Malwarebytes before.
Well, I do find my laptop slowing down or freezing at times when too many applications are open...
I guess I open too many heavy applications at once, hehe.
Also, why Pale Moon? Can't I install those add-ons on just Firefox?
Well I don't really mind, but my Facebook doesn't fully load on Pale Moon, it simply loads some of the text without loading any images or colors.
Yes, I see now. I'm using them now thanks to m1ko ^_^Last edited: Jun 16, 2015 -
Sluppo, in the screenshot, you can see OPTIONS there in the TS. Right upper corner, there are DEFAULT PROFILES.
AC profile means default TS profile when charger is connected, battery profile when running on battery. Low battery % you set up when you reach % battery threshold, it sets battery profile. All these switch automatically, depending on what is happening (Charger/battery/low battery).
Otherwise you need to switch profiles manually, but it is pretty fast, like two mouse clicks (right click on TS icon in tray or simply opening it and click on desireable profile).
You can have only 3 profiles set up if you want, but I have one for high performance (with full turboboost) and one (default profile on charger connected) with no turboboost for standard use of laptop (not that demanding games, etc.) Honestly I use the non - turbo profile 98% of the time, I turn it on only for GTA V.Sluppo likes this. -
Hello everyone, i am new here, and i have just recently revieved my y50 in the mail today. And I am loving this laptop, but something that already concerns me is that i just finished doing all the start up stuff, and the area between the J,K,L,M keys are getting warm, yet im not doung anything at all. Is this a concern i should be worried about? Thanks for the help. Also, if it is not much trouble, you guys have any tips for me? Like what drivers to install, what to remove from the computer. Anything helps. However, i dont want to do a fresh install like some others have said.
-
Check your laptop temperature using HWMonitor or Open Hardware Monitor. Your CPU should be fluctuating between low 40s to high 40s, and the GPU should be at high 30s or low 40s ( Idle ).
What I did when I received mine was that I uninstalled all the bloatware ( useless lenovo stuff ) and re-partitioned the hard disk ( this will make you lose One Key Recovery ).
Hope this helps. -
Ah i see. I downloaded open hardware monitor, and monitoring the tenperatures on idle while screen brightness was 50% and on power saver mode, the temps went to 45-49C. Would it go that high on power saver? Btw i am also using a cooling pad underneath. I use the cooler master x-slim. I feel like i should be getting a much lower temperature in this situation.
-
Screen brightness has nothing to do with temps, 40s are more than fine, I wouldn't worry. Try playing a game or do a stress test and see how high your temps would go ( anything less than 90C is fine ).
-
Oh i see. Well, yesterday, i played around an hour and a half of league of legends on balanced, high settings, getting 60 fps. And the keyboard did get warm, not uncomfortable, but the left edge was indeed hotter. But i guess thats because the cpu is under the wasd keys. Next time i will check the temps and post my results.
Also, should i let the battery die all the way firsy and then charge it? Because i got the laptop at around 50% battery, and i charged it to 100% and im only getting 2:15 hours on the estimated time remaining with my brightness 50% and backlight off, wifi off(using lan cable), pretty much all the radios off. Thanks for the help, and thanks for the fast responses. Very much appreciated.
