    Thanks that'd be great!

Can you also tell which version of the y50 do you have? I've got the one with 960m and 1080p ips panel.

Im also running windows 10 home 64 bit

Sorry for the late reply, i forgot to do it when i got home, and had a pretty busy weekend.

I watched a linus tech tips video about this topic. Theres really no difference between the line,x, or the dot. I think ot was not recommended to spread the paste around, but im not sure. This is from the top of my head, so you can check out that video if you have time.

Personally i did the dot method for the cpu i believe, and a short line on the gpu. I may have messed up on the cpu, because sometimes my temps fluctuate, but not by much. And my gpu temps have been fantastic.

i did dot for cpu since its a square, and a short line since the gpu is rectangle in shape

those cpu temps are awesome, but are you sure you have the CPU and GPU the right way for the AFTERS temps? since i've never seen GPU being higher than the CPU before, even under intense games like dying light.
have you also tried to removed the plastic on the back of the laptop where it looks like vents?

Anyway it looks like i'll be returning this laptop next friday. Already bought another which should come in next week.

i am happy with the temps currently and the gpu temp might be high as i am using msi afterburner to overclock it
no i haven't tried to remove the plastic ,,,currently cpu temp is normal i.e under 75(goes @75 max but come back under 70) on heavy usage also
i am happy with gpu which gets maxed out at 72-73 on overclocking as earlier it was cooking for almost 1 year at 90+ degrees..

Guys I have a question. I have a Y50 and I just noticed that I have BOTH nVidia and Intel HD Graphics installed. Is this normal ?

Also, which of the two (my nVidia 860M card or CPU) controls the HDMI out on my Y50 ?

Lol seriously? Yeah, all Y50 have both GPU and IGP.

For the HDMI - not sure, check NVidia settings I guess..

Ah, I didn't know that. I thought that at any given time, you should only have one display driver installed, but maybe that's relevant to desktops.

The reason I asked is because of another problem I'm having:

When I use HDMI out on my Y50, video becomes very choppy (all kinds of video: Netflix on chrome, MPC, etc.) and audio doesn't play at all. The 'fix' is that I have to open the Windows Playback devices dialog and disable the TV speakers output. Video instantly becomes fluent once again, but now the audio is playing through my laptop. I don't know what's the culprit here. Any ideas ?

Osama, the simplest solution is to install Lenovo's old Energy Manager. It still works under Windows 10. You should not need to uninstall Lenovo Settings.

    Hi

I've recently bought this laptop and I'm a little concerned with the gpu fan noise. Here is the issue:

As you can hear the fan is making a high pitched noise when pushed to the max. It only happens when the fan is at I'm assuming 80 to 100%. Should I be concerned about this ? btw the gpu temp hovers around 75 degrees when running furmark for 15 minutes.

So, my Y50 had right click problems. It was very unresponsive and progressively got worse. I sent it in for repair, the motherboard and touchpad was replaced. On receiving it, the new touchpad feels great. Right and left click works. But no gestures work. Synaptics also does not detect any actual touch from the touchpad, that is, the area in the tray icon that lights up when you touch the touchpad no longer moves. Is there a specific cable that detects touch and another that connects the touchpad itself ?

Holy cow, how'd you hit 4.5GHz? That's insane.

Also, in a few weeks, I'll be a part of the owners. Hopefully it gets here sooner though. 960m version, I'm looking forward to it.

How close can you get to a stock 965m over clocking the 960m?

I spilled a drink on my y50 keyboard and plan on ordering a new one on Ebay. I saw that you can't just replace the keyboard, you must replace the top panel. Did all Y50 come with the same top portion?

Lenovo makes hardware maintenance manuals for every computer they've ever made. They include parts lists, how to repair, and basically everything you'll ever need to maintain a Lenovo.

Here's the Y40/Y50 version. Read it and it'll answer your question:

Has anyone had luck with the thermal paste replacement? I replaced the thermal paste as I was getting some overheating, especially at the OC speeds achieved by @hdneo.
I am now getting worse thermal performance than before (even worse than when the laptop was new).
Which paste do you recommend for use on this laptop? Thanks.

Well, I've done it for me and others among with some other BIOS mods. It's pretty safe provided you know what are you doing, but it's a bit complicated - it involves hex editing, backlflashing and using DOS to reflash the modded BIOS. If someone needs to have their BIOS unlocked(I can do both hidden tabs unlock, WiFI whitelist unlock, vBIOS unlock and splash logo change), hit me up via PM, I can do it for free :)

Zero Assumption Recovery. Unfortunately it's not free but it works wonderfully on otherwise unreadable HDDs.

I used this right here. I'm not a very scientific chap, so I actually don't bother quantifying what happened after I made the the change. That said, I don't think things were worse for me as they were for you.

I applied my paste like this guy does if that helps.

I also removed that filter thing.

    Hi!
So, i've replaced the panelin my FHD Y50. All good. After a while picture started to flicker, so i adjusted the motherboard connector. Now i don't have backlight :(
Tried another panel / flat cable and it's the same. I see the dim picture, but no backlight. Does anyone know if there is a fuse for the backlight on the board, and such fuse location ?

I have the 2014 UHD (irrelevant) model. Is there any compatibility issue with the most recent 850 evo SSD? My HDD is pretty much FUBAR so I'll replace it.

I'll repaste at the same time. What are you guys' preferred repasting method? Spread or pea-sized spot?

    Hi! New user here!
I'm a fresh new user of the Y50 FHD, i7 4720hq, 960m. Aside from occasional flickering that appears after wake up from standby for some seconds, it seems ok to me.

    Two questions:

Can you confirm that there's no way to turn fans off when the CPU is in idle?

Aaaaand.. Is there really no way to fix this crappy unresponsive touchpad?

The last one is no big deal to be honest. I use this laptop exclusively for gaming purposes, I've a MacBook for work and study.

Any other must-do tips for this model (bios settings, color screen settings, performance clock tweaks) are really appreciated

buy this model with gt 960m + 1tb ssh disk

i come from a samsung series 9 notebook with 512gb ssd disk, always super fast and i used to have a 8 seg boot to windows

this 1tb ssh disk is a disaster, how lenovo can place a disk like this in a "gaming" laptop

sometimes i want to pick the laptop and destroy it ehehehehe

solution wil be buy a ssd because with this ssh there is no solution to have a good performance

the design of laptop is very good, sound is great too, gtx is great, materials of construction aren´t bad at all too, but i would prefer metal instead of ruber in the keyboard area and base

    my touchpad is broken :(

the left and right lick buttons don´t work

only tip that i sugest is format all disk, make a clean install from a updated version of windows 10 from a usb pen, and don´t install nothing from lenovo

    Yeah, I agree.
Since I have a second laptop for serious stuff with SSD, I said "well no problem, I have just to launch games here, I can wait". But damn, sometimes its really slow.

Switching to an ssd will make me lose the warranty? Since there's occasional flickering on the display, I have to be sure to send it back in case it gets serious.
