Think lenovo are shipping y70 with an external optical drive. Not as an option, just a standard extra.
-
From what i've seen, some configurations (based on reviews & unboxings of the Y50 in the US) don't always come with the external drive (which was DVD-RW)
-
Yep, on Y50 it was an option, on Y70 (from what I've read) its standard. Perhaps feedback was bad on Y50 for those that wanted dvd drive and paid for it thinking it was internal (lenovo reps were frequently quoting it was internal and i think their own website said it was internal for a while). Maybe they thought if they package it up in the price as 'free' they appeal to widest audience? Pretty sure Y70 optical drive will be external and all y70's will ship with one. Not bithered uf proved wrong though. After the shambles of the screen on the y50, I'm less keen on y70. Will see what happens with other options over next few weeks before taking plunge.

Aye, still going to wait for reviews of the acer and asus offerings soon to be released (hopefully!) for comparison and get one from these three manufacturers. I know its bad form to 'advertise' other laptops so wont mention the models in this thread.

I do have the SSD version. It takes about 7 seconds to boot up to the logging screen. It really feels very fast and responsive, haven't had any lags while doing day to day tasks. I know this is all very subjective, but I can definitely feel the difference with the Flex 2, which is also an i7.
I can't say much about the touch screen, I honestly didn't get it for that feature and have not used it other than just scrolling a browser window or clicking a random button. -
Can you not put more than one HDD in these things? It doesn't seem so and that's completely insane to me, the Y400/500 allowed up to 3 HDDs w/ msata + 2 9.5mm drives as I have now but these new ones only have 1 spot for a HDD now?! What were they thnking!?
-
I want to buy the laptop to edit pictures and HD videos.. I don't know if it's the best choice.

For anyone who does have an Y70 Touch already, are you able to check/confirm and post what the manufacturer & model no of the display, yours has come with?

I am actually really debating ordering one of these from Brian and returning my N550jk ... decisions decisions.KlickOnline likes this. -
Never knew this would be a thing.

Come on Lenovo. Give me a UK price already...

Apart of the screen, are there other design flaws from the y50 that we would like Lenovo to have fixed on the y70?
-
-
well, they could have used the bigger dimensions of the Y70 for more storage options. at least a added mSATA- or M.2-slot would have been nice, eh?

No other problems on the y50?
I thought wifi card was working so so and there was some fan ticking issue?
I was just wandering if there is a list of known issued affecting y50 platform as it looks like y70 could inherit the issues of its smaller brother. -
*CPU Turbo boost turned off in bios @ 65C. (in practice that is the same as always off). Under heavy gaming throttles to 1.8GHz.
*Poor cooling. With turbo boost enabled through throttlestop - cooling can't keep up and CPU gets 100C when gaming and then throttles. This also cause keyboard to get very hot.
*Models with intel wifi is OK. Models with realtek or qualcomm wifi is REALLY CRAPPY.
*As we already know - crappy screen.
if Y70 use same cooling and MB it will probably have the same issues as well. -
-
Though with throttlestop on, set at a multiplyer of 29, I get a constant 2.9ghz. But then my CPU temps are around 90c. I don't consider this "poor cooling" as this is after playing bf4 for over an hour. If a person is going to be playing a CPU intensive game suchas bf4 for that long, they could at least purchase cooling fans, which probably would help quite a lot -
Is it possible that there may be a slightly larger motherboard, and therefore things may be more spaced out on the Y70? as at the very least, the ports will be further away from the centre than on the Y50, to reach the edge of case.
-
Seems like it will only have one 2.5" hard drive bay. That's a total crapper considering most 17 inch laptops usually have room for 3 (if you sub the ODD). Even my older 14" has 2.
Also it's a shame they didn't take advantage of the larger chassis to fit a better GPU :/
It's really just a slightly bigger and heavier Y50 with a bigger screen. Hopefully the panel will be/is of good quality. -
-
True. Most of the stuff I do though is simply remuxing/re-encoding video, not altering things in terms of how they appear visually on the screen.
-
Does anyone have any information about the UK release date, or expected pricing? Currently it's listed as "Coming Soon" on the Lenovo website.

Here's an italian preview of the Y70: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLJxRY2wuRg I wonder what people can deduce from how the screen appears in that one?

Breaking news: Lenovo have one model up in the UK, shipping within 1 to 2 weeks, it's at £1,199.99, but it appears to only include a 256GB non-SSD (well, it doesn't say whether it's an SDD or otherwise). Lenovo Y70 Touch Laptop | 17.3" High-Performance Gaming Notebook PCÂ| Lenovo UK. Given the hard drive's size, you'd assume it was an SSD, yet i'm annoyed they don't have a 512GB SSD version up there. I don't want to wait for ages only to find that they're not gonna sell one with a 512GB SSD in the UK.
-
Well i've bit the bullet and ordered it. Fingers crossed it's a good'un!
I'm replacing the SSD with a Crucial MX100 512GB disk, and the SKU of the Y70 that i've ordered (appears to be the same as the 512GB SSD version on sale in the US, but with a 256GB drive) is: 80DU004NUK -
There's now a £999 version listed on the UK website as well. It seems to have the 1TB hybrid, but strangely is listed as having the 2GB version of the 860M. If accurate, does anyone know how that version compares to the 4GB chip?
-
Doubt the extra 2gb vram would make much difference (on the 860), unless youre playing with hd texture packs, or using multi monitor setups... Think 2gb is standard and manufacturer can decide to add more vram if it thinks it will help shift units. Won't hurt to have 4gb, but i dont think youd miss it based on the rest of the components...
-
Cheers, I've emailed customer service to try and confirm this and a few other details, including the optical drive situation and to check which wireless adapter it had. The technical descriptions for both versions of the Y70 seem rather hastily put together and not entirely comprehensive. I had been hoping that it would just be alarger version of the equivalent Y50, but we'll see.
-
-
I'm right in thinking that the 2GB one is Maxwell, aren't I?
-
In the y70 the only option is maxwell, but some other laptops with 860 are kepler.
-
Arriving tomorrow I hope. Am I the first customer in the UK to order one perhaps? I ordered it only a few hours after the order page went live.
-
-
Well it's arriving on Wednesday. I shall report back then on my initial impressions (bearing in mind my current laptop is a Toshiba L300 Satellite Pro from 2009, so my expactations of greatness may be a little lower than some other here lol). By Friday I might post a few YouTube vids as well.
-
Well the laptop has arrived, and before I say anything else, i'll say that i'm annoyingly unable to upgrade the hard drive, 3 of the scews on the bottom of the case (the end by the touch pad) have been done up so tight that I can't get them undone (to the point at which the heads have been partly sheared)... So I can't take the bottom panel off to upgrade the hard drive...
On happier notes, the screen looks excellent, and to my (albeit untrained) eye, doesn't appear to have the same problems as the Y50 from what i've seen. The SSD in mine is a 256GB Drive, by LiteOn - which leads me to question whether it's performance is as good as the Samsung's that I think are in other editions of if not the Y70, then the Y50 at least...
Anyway, after using it for a good few hours, I haven't found any major issues. The wifi seems fine to me, and the touch performance is great. Audio coming through from the JBL speakers is fantastic. The touchpad isn't as bad as I was expecting, and i've gotten used to the Keyboard better than I thought I would too. Just a shame, i'm not able to access either the RAM or the Hard Drive due to those annoying 3 screws... -_-
