Alright, now things really started to heat up. Ran Prime95 for a measly 20min (as I really didn't want to stress test it). Here's some numbers:
All 4 threads were maxed out 100% for 100% of the time.
I left the 5650 active as to get temperature readings off of it though it stayed at 0% load throughout the 20min.
Temperatures:
C1 & C2 settled in/spiked both at 86C
The GPU temp settled in at 77C with the fan running @ 70%.
At 20minutes I stopped it and after 15 seconds the cpu temps were back under 60C.
The right palm rest got unbearably hot, the left exhaust fan was very hot, and so was the area directly under the hotspot area on the trackpad/palm rest.
-
Looks like the CPU is the one that causes the most heat.
It's a core i5-520M right? It's a pretty powerful CPU.
Does it get this hot during an hour of intense gaming like everything maxed in a game?
With the intel HD graphics, the palm rest never gets warm to where it's unbearable right? -
-
This is encouraging news. It means I can play BFBC2 for an hour or more AND make breakfast (fried eggs and bacon) with my laptop afterwards!
Thanks Lenovo!
-
According to a Chinese owner's test, graphics in Y560 reaches 89 degrees, which is quite much. Isn't it similar to Y460?
-
Hmm, those temperatures are not good.
-
This is why I don't play game on my laptop. I hate warm palm rest.
-
I'm not really concerned about the Y460 and its heat issues, I've been holding out for the Y560 since early Feb. The waiting game for it is starting to get old though. -
I opened my Y460 yesterday, and so far have been extremely pleased with it.
Don't know how hard on systems Mass Effect 2 is compared to BFBC2, but I just played it (ME2) for well over an hour, with the notebook on a cooling pad, with no discomfort at all; the right half of the touchpad was the only area that increased in temperature noticeably, and I cannot adequately express how minor the increase was - it was absolutely nothing to be concerned about. Considering this increase occurred within the first 10-15 minutes of playing, I have very little doubt that the system would have experienced negligible temperature increases, if any, over an extended period of play beyond the ~90 minutes I gave it.
As I said, ME2 may be less demanding than BFBC2, but for my needs (word processing, simple web browsing, and occasional gaming - all in a thin & light, portable package), this laptop is perfect. For the price at which I got it ($950 after tax with the St. Patrick's Day discount), with what I was looking for, I doubt I could have snagged a better deal right now.
Needless to say, if anything does happen to change my feelings about it, I'll share my experience(s) and reaction(s) here. -
Just got done playin a couple of hours of Crysis.
Game settings: Medium settings accross the board, no AA, 1366x768.
System settings: Performance profile (cpu turbo boost always on).
FPS: Lowest 22 / Highest 42 / Averaged mostly around mid 30's
Temperatures: both cpu's averaged high 60's low 70's (C) as did the gpu
Played with a mouse and laptop keyboard. Don't have a cooling pad yet. The game played very well comming from my quadcore/twin 280gtx homebrew. I'm sure once I get my NC2000 in it'll be just fine on the heat while gaming. -
1) Can you test the battery life when you are reading documents with intel hd graphics? When you charge your battery at max, how much estimated time do you see when you are clicking on tray icon with battery (without any tasks on cpu, gpu and hdd) with Power Saver.
2) Please, make some photos with different angles of display (and i'm very interested in levels of contrast).
Sorry for my language, i'm a student from Russia. Thank You. -
When I say turbo boost always on, this is what I mean.
On my system when I use the performance profile, under the Lenovo Energy Management app the cpu is set to Maximum CPU speed = High. Once on this setting I checked Everest CPUID for both cores and both are running at ~2.9GHz even while idle.
Setting it to Auto Adjust they switch from 1.346GHz to ~2.9GHz and any multiplier multiple inbetween (10x (maybe even 9x but haven't seen it) to 22x I believe).
Setting it to Low keeps them at ~1.23GHz(9x).
Using Super Energy Saver profile with the brightness at 30% it says it has 4hrs and 7min @ 75% battery though this is while completely idle while using the intel gpu, no apps/tasks running.
As for testing the life while reading documents, I opened a couple of documents and it shaved off a couple of minutes if that helps.
Maybe today I'll take some screen angle pics. -
Thanks for info! 4 hours with 75% battery is very good, even without tasks. Take some shots with black background, please
Chinese review says that there is very good contrast and brightness. Can't wait Y560

There is a nice topic about lcd screens and Y460 is there
http://translate.googleusercontent....le.com&usg=ALkJrhh9OfYWy0CnOVSNRYsljSoyOQSb0w -
Can anyone who owns Y550p claim or disprove that its display is as bad as is mentioned here: http://translate.googleusercontent.c...RYsljSoyOQSb0w ?
edit: I watched only the first evaluation. In the second and third one Y550p is above average. -
Here's some more pics that I took earlier today.
Lenovo Y460
Forgive the finger prints and poor pic quality lol. I'm definetly no photographer. The angle pics came out pretty good though I think. -
just an update from my previous post,
1) the touchpad though it felt odd when I first used it, after getting used to it I feel its actually very good and gives you very easy control all around the screen.
2) During normal usage of browsing with Balanced/power saver battery settings and Intel GPU, some documents, some video or music even after extensive continuous use the laptop has so far performed well without any noticeable heat issues. It runs descently cool.
When you switch to ATI GPU while playing a movie the bottom area gets only slightly warm whichs far from being uncomfortable.
3) Under balanced/good life span battery settings(it maximum charges to 80% only), it gives about 2 - 2.5 hrs.. otherwise it should be more than 3 hrs. I like the customizability of power management
4) A minor annoying issue till now has been the 'chich shsh' sound that comes from probably the hard disk area.. has anyone else faced the same issue? I prefer full silence.. is there any way to get rid of it if there is a way?
Overall after couple of days of usage my impression is very good and worth the money I spent. -
Only way to get rid of it would be to buy a SSD. My Y550P did what you are describing too. Yours is not constant is it?
-
Are the y460's shipped with Hitachi hard drives? My T61 used to have one and it would always make a click sound.
-
@nicksti
Its constant, its faint and little annoying when everything is quiet around -
So, what about overclocking the graphics card? OC'ed 5730 has 9500 points in 3d Mark 2006 (4500 sm3.0)
But 5730 and 5650 are the same. Try AMD GPU Tools
-
I noticed something on the listing on the Y series page. Under the Y460 listing, there is the "Enhanced Experience" logo. When clicked upon, the pop up says, in the top right corner, "Now with RapidDrive on select models."
Its just a question of time... -
opps edit.

Just got it! This is an amazing machine for the price. Regarding the heat, after using it for a while, it does not get hot enough either on my lap or by the touchpad to make it uncomfortable. I am not saying that the other people were exaggerating the issue, as they were performing stress tests, including gaming, while I was just doing everyday usage.
The JBL speakers are amazing; the quality of music blasted from these is superb, better than some stereos to tell you the truth. Also, the design is great, and although the keyboard has some flex, it doesn't bother me while I am typing.
No RapidDrive.
I'll be glad to answer anybody's questions about this laptop. Just reply to the thread.

Congrats, looking forward to the day of opening my Y560 if ever.
What about the HDD noise which was mentioned here? Do you have same problem? Afterwards, could anybody try how i5 520M handles cutting Full HD video? I need a machine which would do better than my Celeron and in best case which could trim Full HD fluently. Doesn't matter how long time it takes to encode final product, just if I can work well with videos. -

Also, how could I test cutting Full HD video? What software would I use? -
The ideapad Y series notebooks really are nice machines. Only wish they received more attention.
I think Lenovo made a mistake with the polygons on the lid and the orange trim. It is okay for my tastes but probably not mainstream. The orange should have been silver or a glossy black.
I suspect we will see the Y560s come out early April. Hopefully with Rapid Drive -

I was used to cut with Corel Video Studio Pro (11,12 - can be downloaded as upgradeable trial, size ca. 200 MB), it's rather basic software, but acceptable for me. Of course, if you could test it in another application, no problem. Any software with realtime video preview should do the job well. And if anybody was able to test it, try .mov quicktime format please. It's much more demanding than others (MPEG2 etc.) and my camcorder records it.

Question for other current Y460 owners: is your laptop closing properly? Either my magnetic strip is not aligned properly or this is a design fault; the laptop closes, but when I pick it up, it opens again and is difficult to stay closed. Anyone else have this problem?
-
I'm interested in how people would compare the Y460 (with integrated graphics) with the Toshiba Satellite M500. With a similar configuration--plus "USB sleep and charge," a hard drive impact sensor, and an LED screen--the latter can be had for about $800: http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/cdetland.to?poid=467916
The two are comparably priced, have identical core specs, both offer premium speakers, etc. Aside from the Y460 being slightly thinner/lighter (4.7 lbs v. 5.2 lbs) and having better battery life (2.5 hours v. 2 hours), is there any other reason to go with it and the potential heating issues? Also, are those issues likely to cause much trouble if the device sits in one's lap while web browsing or is left streaming audio for an extended period of time?
Thanks. -
Please, try to overclocking the graphics card, 800MHz for GPU and 1000MHz for memory should be stable.
-
hey guys, i'm thinking of buying the Y460. does anybody have any discounts/rebates for it besides the st. patrick's day sale $150 off? i read on here some guy got theirs for 950 including tax, which means they got it in the $800s.
Thanks in advance! -
so far, only BCB @ 10%
i'm not aware of any current coupons -
I wonder if Lenovo going to use the new edge keyboard on future ideapads.
-
-
-
The price is a bit of an ouch though for me. Same pricepoint as the Dell but outside of my budget. -
-
There probably wouldn't be switchable graphics with the i7-720QM model, though.
-
As excited as I am to hear this, I am also a little leery. Can anyone else call and ask about if the Y560 comes with RapidDrive?
I really want to pull the trigger, but now I have to wait for them to adjust the normal price to "sale price" to trim some money off. Maybe Wed or Thrus they'll adjust the price. -
Hm... price is a bit steep. Makes the Envy 15 look a lot better. I don't see a rapid drive option either. Finally, build quality on the Envy looks to be better. Unless the price dropps on the Lenovo they are going to have a tough sell.
-
-
Look at some benchmarks. There is just a little difference of performance between i5 520M and 430M, although 520M frequency is 140 MHz higher. Still don't think it should kill 3 months of waiting for this model with switchable graphics and maybe even Rapiddrive. BTW: Lenovo Y460 was announced for 1200$ first day and brought down to 1050$, so expect same at Y560.
