I am speaking to a sales rep currently, and he said that the RapidDrive models will be identified by "++", the Enhance Experience logo. He said that none of the computers are available currently with RapidDrive, and he doesn't really have a solid guess when they would be available. He too, complained about crappy, constantly changing information coming from Lenovo Corporate. So I guess its more waiting for us.

My Y460 is closing just fine and it also stays closed. What do you mean by 'picking it up'? Holding it upside-down?

I've been using the laptop (i5 version) for a couple of days now. Everything works just fine and I'm generally very pleased. It hasn't overheated playing games occasionally and it stays relatively cool in other situations.

For the price (I got it for $940 incl. TAX with student discounts and the sale back then) this has so far turned out to be a great choice.

I can take some professional pictures with my bigger camera soon and maybe upload a video-overview if you guys want.

If I pick it up and hold it under my arm vertically with my hand by the hinges (so the front of the computer is facing upwards) it will not stay closed. Does yours?

I just don't understand to Lenovo's trading strategy and I'm very disappointed with that. Why don't they offer new Ideapads to ordinary e-shops? If they don't have enough producing capacity and can't satisfy all customers in stated time, so they shouldn't launch it before they have some reserve in stores.

Btw, you guys who already own Y460, how long warranty do you have? One or two years? Is it possible to have 2-yrs long warranty outside USA? In Europe e.g.? Thanks for reply.

Well, the i7 version of the Envy 15 combines a Core i7-720QM with an even higher powerdraw ATI Radeon 5830, although it does run fairly hot

The HP Envy 15 has a way better cooling solution than the Y560. The Envy 15 has 2 seperate cooling fans. One for the CPU and one for the GPU.

The Y560 has one fan and a shared heatpipe for the GPU and CPU.

Ah, now I know what you mean! Yes, if I hold it the way you describe the lid does lift up a little bit. I guess this is by design, since the screen has no conncectors like, for example, the Thinkpad series. But actually it doesn't bother me much. Just hold it on the other side.

OK, I will take some pictures and a video later.

Dell Studio XPS 16 vs Lenovo Y560

    Dell - i5-430, ATI 4670 HD $1199.00
    Lenovo - i5-430, ATi 5730 HD $1199.00

with i7 the Dell is $1349.00 and the Lenovo is $1399.00

And that is with the Dell rebate (which Dell always has) vs no Lenovo rebate.

Lenovo should offer a rebate soon. And Dell has not switchable graphics, so battery life would be around 2,5-3 hours against Lenovo's 5 hours.

Fair enough. With a rebate the Lenny will be at a similar pricepoint.

So the official word is no Rapid Drive on the new Y560?

When I spoke with the second Lenovo sales rep yesterday, he stated that none of the current Y560 or Y460 models have RapidDrive. However, he did say his Brand Manager that at least one model of the Y560 with RD "should" be out late April. And I had another rep tell me that in mid-April, the Y460 will relaunch with models carrying the RD feature.

I don't know what to believe. I think its ridiculous that product page for the Y460 & Y560 have the RD listed, but none of the models have it. I say call them a couple of times and see what different reps say. I can say for a fact that you never get the same answer from two different reps.

Does the Y460 have a glossy finish around the keyboard? It is hard to tell from the pictures. I much prefer the matte finish (currently using a Y430 and looking for an extra laptop).

And a palm print nightmare! I am not sure when this glossy thing inside a notebook became fashionable but I don't like it. Asus U/UL/UX series is like that too but takes the glossy look to a new level (lid, palmrest, everything).

I thought we moved past this jab? The Y5xx does not run unbearably hot.

Edit: Also I am not sure what is the motivation behind posting coupon codes for other notebooks in a thread dedicated to the new Y460 and Y560. I can say and be sure that Lenovo did not drop the price of the Y460/560 because of the HP Envy's price drop. If you check the Lenovo website enough it is inline with what they do on a whole. All the series have the From struck out and Sale Price under. And they have frequent USP codes to further encourage people to buy.

It is probably proper procedure to put information about other products in a suitable place. Or maybe it would get lost on the 3000th thread in the HP Envy forum?

Edit #2: Also why compare a 14" to a 15.6"? 14 inchers with comparable specs to 15 inchers are always worst bang for bucks. Just look at the HP Envy 13 at a base price of $1499 vs the $1299 of the 15" one.

1049.99 for the HP Envy is a great deal, the only thing that is holding me back of buying the Envy is my experience with hp. Their computer is bug with ac adapter problem. I am not sure if they fix the problem yet.

Full HD on 15,6" is too much for me although I don't have problems with eyes. Also I'd mind that it has NO Expresscard, NO DVD and NO switchable graphics. For 1049$ it definitely worths the price, build quality, design and cooling is supposed to be very good, but Y560 has advantages which are more important for me. Anyway, I don't want to start an Envy dispute again, we went past it already here. Now we're solving Y560's availability and features.

No I am being genuine. I guess that is lost on the net.

I would like to but I have bills to pay so I will get one in June... just in time for them to refresh them on me and leave me with the outdated model.

I got my Y550P in Jan and sold it last week to a friend. The Envy with a $450 is more appealing but comes in at $1400 with an i7 and all rest left basic. Outside of my budget.

If I order any of the current builds, it'll be the i5 version. Don't really care for the i7 quad core as I wont be doing anything that intensive with it and really want my battery life to be longer.

At this point, I don't know what to do. Either I go ahead and order the i5 version as it is, or I can wait for the RapidDrive version to come out. Knowing my luck, as soon as I order the current model, the RD version will show up. It really makes me mad that they release these units without RD, especially since from day one, thats all they've been touting.

Well it would depend on how effecient the technology is. And only so much of your data will be able to utilize this.

I am more waiting for SSD prices to go down. An 80 to 100GB would suit me fine.

    Good point.

Well, ideally, I'd love to carry my 200 gigs of music where ever I go, but I guess an external hdd could take care of that. Still, I'd hate to have to connect that thing everytime I wanted to listen to something.

On the otherhand, having a full 80-128gb SSD for my OS and apps would rock. And I guess I didn't really think about what happens after the 32gb SSD RD gets full, so I think that more than makes up for my music being stored on a separate drive.

Here's hoping that a coupon code becomes available tomorrow!

    Thanks, Nicksti!

Thanks for the quick answer. Would pull the trigger on this, but I find all the gloss too distracting and very sticky when humid. Wish I could find a solid consumer laptop without all the gloss.

I called Lenovo about that today b/c they don't appear on the check out page. I'm either getting the 2yr In Home + Accidental Protection ($159) or the 3yr version ($239). I'm leaning more towards the 3yr, just to be safe.

Hi all, I'm new here, and I've been waiting for the y460/y560 for quite a few months now. I was looking at the Chinese Lenovo website and for some of the y560s listed, under the hard drive segment a 32 gb SSD is indicated. So hopefully that is an indication that the technology will eventually reach US shores soon.

I'm pretty bummed that there isn't a I7-620m or I5-540m option for the processors, just the I7-720qm and I5-430m, but hopefully here in Singapore, just like for the Y460, they can include I5-540m processors into the y560s.

I don't know if I really need a quad core, since all I will be doing will be using it for school + playing some RTS games, but I would at least like a powerful dual core that has the option to do switchable graphics (which the i7 quad doesn't have). What do you guys think?

I don't think it does. The integrated gpu comes with the latest Arrandale processors(i3,i5, i7-620m), the i7-720qm was released last year and I don't think it has the IGP on board the chip, which probably means that quad core y560 doesn't have switchable.

I always thought that they would release the y560 with the i7-620m which has the onboard Intel HD graphics, but now with the quad core being chosen, I don't think they can include the switchable graphics.

Damn, damn, damn. Can't believe it. So long waiting and now they offer it just with i5 430M. According to benchmarks there shouldn't be so big difference over i5 520M, but just the information that 520M can be boosted up to 2,93 GHz, while 430M's limit is 2,53 GHz means much. There should be a considerable difference. I'm still curious if any of them can handle HD / Full HD video cutting...

The difference is AES-NI and only ~5% when running on two cores, though it's ~15% on one. However, you'll probably be using two cores when it really matters.
