My thoughts are that I would rather just have options for a 128GB SSD.

Depends on how it's implemented. If rapiddrive gives me 80% the speed of SSDs while allowing me to have 500Gb of storage, I'll take rapid drive in a heartbeat.

The only things you need the SSD speed for is your OS and key applications you use all the time. Everything else is for file and movie storage.

Why is the keyboard on the Y460 white? I'm not sure on the older models... was it always the same color... that white looks to be dirty eventually just like the mac books. Other than that, I'm digging the specs... but the design kinda reminds me of the HP laptops especially the lid.

I've seen the video demonstrations of RapidDrive and I think thats the idea. I believe an example would be a 500gb platter drive for storage and and a seperate 32 or 64gb (I've seen both numbers tossed around) SSD to handle loading files for boot up and launching applications. That's why I'm really interested in it b/c Lenovo's setup (hypothetically) doesn't impact overall storage space.

You'll be able to choose a white or grey/black (not sure if its one or both) keyboard when you place your order through Lenovo (as seen by previous configurations of other models on their website). I originally wanted white, but changed my mind to grey/black for the very reason you speak of.

thinkpad for the win, but with the new edge and x100e and sl,
why the heck not just get an ideapad! its not like thinkpads arent slowly becoming consumer notebooks anyways!

Hm, Lenovo should really implent the switchable option.
    It saves battery life.

If not, i am gonna stick with the new N82.

Well, it looks like the release date for the Y460 and Y560 has been pushed back from "early March" to "mid March."

Y460 and Y560 will have switchable graphics, just not automatic like the new Asus' will be.

though i might still go for Asus because.. who came up with black cover+white key board+red trim anyways?
i prefer a mid-range game rig that can pass as a sober business laptop.
not that N82's brown is all that appealing either, IMHO

Well, i am pretty open towards various designs.
If they have both switchables, very good.
Design would be the last point in my list to chose for or against something.
Next things to compare now are display, chasis, battery life.

One pluspoint so far speaking for the N82 is the USB3.0 port.

Man, i hate this damn wait until it is officially released, then until there is a profond review and then until it is broadly avaible....

The "New Product Showcase" page now says, "Y560 available late February; Y460 available early March."

    http://shop.lenovo.com/us/landing_pages/products/new-product-showcase

Just last week this page changed the availablity of these two models from "early March" to "mid March." If this is accurate and seeing as we're currently in the last week of Feb, the Y560 could show up on their website any day now.

    Keep your eyes peeled!

I was hoping for the new style "chicklet" keyboard like on the Thinkpad Edge.

Now that I've seen the close-up pictures with the old style keyboard I'm not as interested in the Y460.

It still looks like a nice laptop, but I just love the way that Thinkpad Edge looks..... I would buy that laptop in a second if the Edge would use the new CULV i7-640UM and GMA HD graphics instead of the older Intel SU73000 with 4500HD graphics.

That Edge chicklet keyboard looks like the most comfortable keyboard ever made.

Yeah, the keyboard is kind of a deal breaker for me, since trying out chiclet keyboards I've been in love with them when it comes to typing.

Keyboard doesn't matter that much to me if it is still ok.

What concerns me more....is the display. The weakpoint of almost every notebook, though it is quite the important part of a notebook (if you are really using it like a notebook and not plugging in a 42'' monitor or whatever).

But you can't advertise a display so good compared with cpu, graphiccards and even the hdd.

I'm thinking the Y560 will be available tomorrow. If we're talking "late Feb," there's only 4 more days left in the month and all of their current sales promotions end today. I could be wrong, but here's hoping.

I don't care about this small little nice feature.

Can't wait to see how the display performs, the build of the chassis and the batterylife (with switchable if it has).

Of course they can't and won't.
Thinkpads are rather designed for proffesional users, also they are more expensive.

    The Y-series is the consumerseries.

But still, i hope the display is so good that one can use it under bright, sunny condition with anti-reflective foil on it...

I'm hoping that between this and the ASUS N82 (they seem to be addressing similar needs), at least one of them will have a good display. I have a MacBook Pro right now, so I would like to find something with an equivalent or better display.

    English translated link by Google

I really hope they provide a i5-520/40m option for European markets. The i5-430m is much slower and actually more comparable to the i3 series. Thats my deal breaker. Come on, about time we see Arrandale i5 w/ ati switchable graphics, I've been waiting forever.

The edge to edge glass screen and overall looks of this notebook is much better than the rumored Asus, although it lacks usb 3.0. My plan is to stick a usb 3.0 Expresscard once usb 3.0 is more mainstream.

This is mine if its not too expensive.

Now this is interessting about the displays. Sounds good.
Too bad that, you can't see the pictures of the camparison among the various displays.
Also it's not that great to read , when translating from chinese to english with googletranslator....but you can grasp the essentiel stuff.

It seems that the people on the chinese forums are moaning quite a bit because the new models are priced pretty high there....i hope this is justified with quality then.

Hope it'd also offer somehting faster than the i5 430M, I'd like to see it shipped with a i5 540M.

Also loved to see it with backlit keyboard, and no pattern on the screen.

    Otherwise specs are great.

    ....March, here we come :)

Hmm, both seem to be so nice that i can't decide which one is better. Switchable HD 5650 and i5 in 14" is a dream. But i7 with 5730 is even slightly better and the display with same (sadly quite low) resolution should be a bit better readable. And rumoured 3D display in Y560, is it true?

Here is detailed information, check it out: http://translate.google.cz/translat...ch.sina.com.cn/n/2010-02-26/15071259102.shtml (thx to google translator ,)

Prices are announced to be similar to the previous models - Y450->Y460, Y550->Y560 - that's GREAT!

    But I'm a bit disappointed with selected processors - Y460 comes with i3 330M and i5 430M and Y560 with i3 330M, i5 430M and i7 720QM - I expected at least stronger i5 like 520M, but it still looks like a great deal.

    EDIT: prices in China converted to USD: Y460 with Core i3 330M - 878$, Y460 with Core i5 430M - 996$, Y560 with Core i3 - 1070$, Y560 with Core i5 430M - 1172$, price of Y560 s Core i7 isn't mentioned there.

    The Asus N82 has a 8-cell battery.

I still hope that the battery life with Intel HD graphics is somewhat reasonable.

If the the price is justified with quality (build quality, display etc.), then it's ok.

A pity that there is not a fingerprint reader integrated into it.

"A gorgeous, LED hi-def screen with an ambient light sensor that auto-adjusts to your conditions, night or day. "

Doesn't sound too bad about the display. Perhaps we can expect a pretty good display now.

Seems like that page went up prematurely. As stated, you can't customize it or even buy a warranty. Currently they have a sale on the Y450 and Y550 (last year's models) that ends Wed. Maybe the 460 and 560 will be officially announced on Thurs, after this sale ends?

I can't wait, hope it will soon appear in Europe as well.

But I'm really confused with the configurations now
According to this page http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/...4FD9B1DDE441472E2759&AID=10594818&PID=3640576 there are configurations with i3 330M/Intel HD and i5 520M/HD5650 and no mention of switchable graphics :( Does it have really hybrid Radeon/Intel HD?
Configuration with i5 and HD5650 is OK, but quite pricey, I'd rather see i3+HD5650 for around 1000$. And next, prices should have started at 849$ and the lowest config with integrated GPU is for 1000$??
