    Hi Guys,

Am planning to buy a new mid-range gaming laptop. I like Y560 but the heating issue from Y460 makes me worry.. does Y560 also heats up a lot? will cooling pad help in any way? Should i go for core i5 430M model or core i7 model? i will be using both for work and gaming. Your help will really be appreciated.

    thanks

The heating "issue" on the y460 is massively overblown. The computer only really heats up when you put a ton of stress on the processor. With a cooling pad, which is recommended for any laptop you're going to use for intensive tasks, I have not been able to break 80*C.

    THERE IS NO OVERHEATING ISSUE!!!!!!

MACBOOK PROs for the last 5-7yrs reach 90-100c and they still work fine.

The y460 runs as high as 70-80'c if you put the notebook on cloth and not a flat table. (its hot but not considered overheating)

the y560 has no heating issue. Its warm to the touch, ONLY if you game for like 4-5hrs straight. Someone said i think 50-70'c degrees, depending on where you live (ontario= 20-30'c and low humidity) (florida= 20-40c with high humidity)

Fry's electronics is having a special on the Y560 core i7 version (slight differences). I'm curious though, how does switchable graphics get implimented in the core i7 version? Do they use a board with an older chipset that has an intel HD graphics chip?

Check the Realtek HD Audio Manager, found under Control Panel>Hardware and Sound

    Might be there?

Even though it's 200 miles away from where I am, mine was delivered today a day ahead of (Lenovo's projected) schedule. I guess it goes to show you never to trust UPS's tracking system since mine hasn't been updated for 5 days last showing it arriving into Japan.
I'll be testing it out in a couple days.

Does the Y560 have an extra open slot for a HDD? And I called Lenovo today, and the guy said that there is switchable graphics for the i7. Can anybody else verify that it is true?

Under Realtek Digital Output Properties, i see Dolby Digital as already selected.

You might have to change your default playback device from the onboard speakers to Realtek Digital Output. I've never tried it myself.

I just saw the i3+5730 variety go on sale for $649 (with coupon code USPY528524) on the Lenovo site...I was previously looking at Asus ULV laptops in that price range and might have to reconsider in the next few days...

Hi Yihuan - What does the Lenovo Split Screen actually do? I have a Y560 that I just purchased and when I run split screen, nothing happens... I called Lenovo and they had no documentation or knowledge of what it is for... I've watched the demo, which has no sound and seems incomplete. Any light that you can shed on this is appreciated!

right click on the icon in the task tray, and choose 4:3, custom or hardware mode (you need to use the ati gfx for this) .

if you choose 4:3 when you click and hold on a window you will see blue tinted boxes in 4:3 and one on the right, when you release the window in either tinted boxes, when u maximize the program, it only maximize in that tinted box area.

custom mode is you get to choose the area of the screen you want to split.

hardware mode is when you full screen a window, ie video game, it only full screens in that tinted box. (i haven't tried this yet)

    hope that helps.

    I have a few questions:

    1. Where are people getting the Y560 with a Core i5? I checked Lenovo.com but all I see is an i3 and two i7 models. However, the 2nd i7 model is more expensive with no apparent increase in specs; could the cheaper i7 model simply be a typo that actually has an i5?

    2. How does the battery life in the Y560 with an i5 compare to one with an i7?

Thanks much! Unfortunately, mine is not working. :( Lenovo tech support had me restore my machine to the factory settings, so I lost all of my applications, etc. and it's still not working. I'm approaching an hour and a half on the phone w/them in total and they pointed me to your response (your posting in response to me) as the answer. Too funny, but also sad. At least they are pleasant and trying.

Thanks again for your quick response. You should bill Lenovo for tech support charges!

The model ID was IdeaPad Y560 - 064627U and it used to be on Lenovo's site, however it seems to have been removed. My guess is that they sold them all and are awaiting more stock.

js2393: The cheaper one has only 4GB RAM while the more expensive one has 8GB, both should be i7. BUT, you're right that the i5 model has disappeared, I'm a bit shocked..
WTH? Maybe it wasn't sold well enough for them, but it had switchable graphics while the i7 doesn't? It was its crowd puller and they stop selling it, even before it comes to Europe? I'm so upset

    lol, too funny.

    did you try re-installing it?

    It should be in D:\drivers\InstallPackage\Installation

if you don't have it then i can upload it.

the size is 15.6" 16:9, so what ever the dimension that is, it would be the same for all laptop with that size. The people cutting should know the dimensions. I would measure it for you but I have the y460.

    Edit: googled- 15.6" 16:9 size is 345 x 194.31mm/13.6" x 7.65" link

Considering that I have had my y460 for nearly 2 months, this is an extremely stupid and sad question. How does the lid stay closed? There is no latch like older laptops, so are the nobs (haha) around the edge magnetic? Mine never stays closed and is always loose when carrying it. I've never really carry it a lot, but it is slightly annoying. Any insight would be great.

    Thanks.

Just recieved my Y560. Couldnt be more happy. Running on two monitors with a movie playing on one and work on the other, but it's still blazing fast.
I got the i7 with 4 gigs, and all the windows experience numbers are up at 7! Except for ram and the hard disc which are both at 5.9.
Even under stress it maintains it's cool. The noise it makes cant even be heard over the AC, but it's speakers get even louder and crisper than my old desktop ones.
And it's even lighter and thinner than I anticipated!
Unfortunately I did suffer a BSOD, lets hope it is the only one... ever. Also I dont like how the palm rests are so close to the trackpad as to lead to inadvertent mouse movements and clicks.
Has anyone found any use for SlideNav? So far it seems like all it is is a gimmick. The other crapware that was installed was amazingly irritating until I was able to safely remove them and salt the earth they inhabited.

Anyone with questions about the machine, ask away!

I was toying around with a netflix streaming movie on one screen with google chrome on the other when my pointer just got huge and BAM BSOD. I hope I don't have to run everything in compatibility mode, this is my first experience with a 64bit operating system.

Ok, question for anyone with a 460/560 model with switchable graphics. Is it possible to configure the graphics to automatically switch from discrete to integrated when the A/C power is removed and vice versa? I find it slightly annoying to have to do it manually as I end up forgetting more often than not.

    A question:
is it possible to replace the HDD in my coming soon y560 with a 128G SSD?
if yes, am i going to loose the recovery and drivers partition?
and i assume it is going to be faster, isn't it?

i called the lenovo tech support and they say that the operating system must support rapid drive technology if you want to install a SSD PCIe along side with the HHD. any comments??

you can replace your hdd with SSD. Yes you will lose your recovery and drive partition (since it's a new drive). you can copy the drivers over. Yes it will be faster. Read up on ssd and services to turn off to extend lifespan of the drive.

They were refering to the hybrid SSD.

According to Windows their 3 hour estimate was right on the money. Keep in mind this is for the i7 unit without switchable graphics. Of course if you do anything more strenuous than opening word and maybe a internet explorer tab then you can expect a steep drop in battery life.

Just powered on my Y560 a few minutes ago. I HATE HATE HATE how I got bombarded with crapware. McAfee, ooVoo, Windows Live, a SplitScreen demo, and that stupid smile menu. I'm going to make restore DVDs and nuke it with a clean copy of Windows 7 now...

Anyways, other impressions: keyboard is good, touchpad needs some getting used to the mesh surface, and the speakers are amazing quality. It's currently sitting idle at 50 degrees but not hot to the touch luckily. I'll be testing gaming performace and battery life pretty soon.

I think this tech was DOA for cost reasons. Independently, the mini PCIe modules cost more than a compareable SSD.

Just a heads up for anyone thinking of buying a y460 or y560 in the next couple of days.... Entering USPLENOVO527 at checkout through June 2 takes off 15% for both machines.(USA only it seems :()

I also just ordered a 128gb SSD and should be here next week. I'm beyond sick of waiting for the Rapid Drive.
