I just got my y560 today and I was wondering how to make recovery disks? I know that the computer doesn't come with any drivers or os back up or anything... so how do you back everything up?

Select the OneKey Recovery program on your Desktop. There you'll have the option to burn your recovery disks.

    Set aside 5 disks

    It only requires 3 DVDs.
Don't forget to select Factory Restore Media.

The backed up drivers are in D drive.

Canada has code CAPGRADUATION for 10% off until June 2, not as good as the USA code =/

Hmmm, that review says the Y460 has no ExpressCard slot. I thought I had read that it did have one. Is this wrong?
('m looking for a 13-14 inch laptop at the moment with switchable gfx but it needs to have an ExpressCard slot...)

It is indeed wrong. It's on the right side just below the usb/SATA drives.

I checked. Very inconspicuous spot to hide it.

I got my first blue screen a few minutes ago, Stop 0x00000101 "A clock interrupt was not received on a secondary processor within the allocated time interval". I wasn't doing anything CPU intensive, the screen and input just froze for 10 seconds before it went to hell. Hopefully this won't be a regular occurrence or it goes back.

Thought so. Thanks! The y460 seems like the best option for me so (haven't seen any other 14 inch laptop with switchable gfx and an ExpressCard slot). Would you recommend it?

It has treated me well for the last 2 months without any problems. I wouldn't recommend it for people who plan to only game on it. Although it can handle the heat decently and play most games at high settings, you're better off with an actual gaming laptop.

The only other 14inch i would consider is the new HP Envy 14(Comes out in a month). Almost same specs, but built a bit stronger and has great battery life. I'm not sure if it has an ExpressCard slot though. Time will tell if it can handle the heat and if it has the spotty quality that some HP's have.

That was the kicker for me. I didn't really want to wait another month for the release (of the Envy 14), let alone the time it would take to get any meaningful feedback. HP quality has been sketchy in the past.

Lenovo, however, seems to have a good reputation.

I don't think it will, I watched a hands-on video and he starts going through the ports at about 2:40. Couldn't see an ExpressCard slot. Also, it'll be heavier than the y460, won't it?
The TimelineX models are the only other options I've heard of, and they've no ExpressCard slots either... (also they haven't been released yet)

I think I'll go for the y460 this week so, it's light, powerful and has an acceptable battery life (around 3 hours, that about right?). I won't be gaming on it much (maybe some GTA4 or Bad Company 2), it'll mostly be lugged around college and used for programming, studying, writing up labs... (yeaaahhh sure it will :D )

Could any owner of the Y560 confirm whether it can drive two external displays at the same time via the VGA and HDMI outputs?

I believe the Envy 14 is about 5.5 pounds where the y460 is 5.0 pounds(Lenovo said 4.7 pounds) Battery life is around 4 and a half hours while surfing the web and light tasks. It will be able to play those games, but I don't know about heat. Some games just stress components more than others. Lifting the back of it up helps and a cooling pad would further the effort to cool it.

Pretty sure I'm going to buy a Y460 soon. The problem is I'm not too excited about it. The screen is just okay, the aesthetics are pretty "eh" (it's not really a nice-looking computer) and I can't even configure it with a 7200 rpm HD.

All things equal, I'd much rather buy a Dell Studio 14/15 or HP DM4t/DV5t. The reason I am getting the y460 is because its graphics option - the Mobility Radeon HD 5650 - is nearly twice as good as those of its competitors in the same size range. I am strongly considering the Envy 14, too, but I'm not sure I trust HP's claims about the price or heat dissipation and the price is likely going to be ~30% higher. I've also read about the Acer 3820TG / 4820TG but they are not out yet...

On the plus side I trust Lenovo's quality and their prices are by far the best.

Has anyone else had trouble with their Y460's DVD drive? Mine makes this incredibly loud vibrating noise when it plays/reads a DVD. It can also be pushed inward a bit with light pressure, and doing this while it's running muffles the vibrating noise.

Hey, from personal experience Ive been running the laptop display and one external pretty much since I recieved the laptop with absolutely no problems. I havent tried two external displays, but the Notebookcheck article for the HD 5730 has this to say on the subject "in laptops we will mostly see the integrated display plus two external at max". So I think you'll be able to do what you want. With multiple displays the laptop does run a bit hotter and louder, but never hot to the touch.

    Hi everyone,
The y460 I'm looking at at the moment is listed as having an Intel Core i5-430M and a 320GB 7200RPM HDD. Were these parts ever used in the y460 line? The only ones I can see on the lenovo website at the moment are the i5 520M and a 320GB or 500GB 5400RPM HDD. (trying to figure out if this seller's legit or not...)

From what I've seen, certain area's seem to get certain parts. They are not drastically different, rather more subtle differences. For example, some of the y460's in some Asian countries had a i5-540M and white keyboard. Best thing would be to ask Lenovo.(Although some people who work for Lenovo aren't the sharpest knifes in the kitchen ;))

Thanks. The one I'm looking at has a white keyboard actually. Seller says it was imported from the US. Kinda sorry I started reading back through the thread too, the further I go back, the more it seems to be about "the heat issue". It's a bit scary... Dammit. For the first time in a month I had my mind all nicely made up for all of 5 minutes!
Are there things people can do to help cool the laptop? (cooling pad, regular cleaning, drill holes in the sides? :D)

Regarding heat. It's not bad as everyone said it would be. The CPU is the by far the biggest problem with temps in the 90C's at 100% CPU usage. Even the new Macbook Pro's are seeing similar problems. Cooling pad helps, even just lifting the back of the laptop up an inch can lower temps by at least 5C. The best thing to do is get any number of free heat monitoring applications and keep an eye on the temperatures.

Is this the case for all CPU options in the y460 or only certain ones? I was hoping that as the i5-430M is the lowest i5 model it might run cooler... Has anyone tried re-applying thermal paste to the CPU to see if it makes any difference? Or is it primarily an inescapable design/airflow issue?

Hey I'm new here and have a quick question. I've read most of the posts in this thread. My question is: I know that the i5 version of the 560P only has switchable graphics, but it's an ATI and not Nvidea, so how does it do this?

You mean y560 right? If that is the case, the i5 has a gpu built into it, by flipping a switch you can switch from the ATI to the power saving Intel HD graphics. You have to do it manually, and it takes about 5 seconds to switch.

Temps for the y560 seem to be in the ~70C under stress. I'm sure you can get a bit higher in some cases, but overall nice compared to the y460. My y460 does get a few finger prints, but the edge around the keyboard is a magnet for fingerprints and scratches.

It is not possible to have switchable graphics for i7 (quad core) because it doesn't have an intergrated gpu.

Some people take the time and read some of the posts on this forum. Almost every question asked has been answered!!!!

i3 and i5 both have INTEL graphics.
currently mobile i7 does not, as it uses a chip from 2009.

Stress test, already done on the y460. It works well!! no over heating problems, just warm to the touch.

y560 stress test, NOT needed as the y460 has already been done, the y560 will run cooler then the y460 due to size.

AGAIN, i7 doesn't have internal graphics, so STOP ASKING the same questions!!!

Some of us want to answer REAL questions.

I'm not gonna lie, I went through this whole thread a few weeks ago, but just got my lappy today (y560) and don't want to go through it again lol. What's the best way to deal with the bloatware? What if any of it is useful, and is the whole thing worth doing a complete reinstall or is it okay to just uninstall what i don't want?

First off. User AboutthreeFiffy IS very knowledgeable about these computers, so be very greatful he is repeating his answers again.

Rapid drive is a NO right now, will be out in sept 2010. You can add it yourself to the expresscard but will cost extra. The new hybrid DVD-SSD drive is not available but that technology isn't by lenovo, read engadget.com for more info.

Answer about bloatware, either get a legit wins7 64bit without the factory restore (not provided by lenovo) and do a fresh install OR you can stick with what you have and will have to just manually uninstall every software that you aren't using, then followed by reg cleaner. Its been mentioned somewhere between pg95 to 100 i think.
