Have you tried lowering your contrast? It was mentioned earlier in this thread somewhere, fixed up the problem for me, no longer do i see the grainyness after lowering my contrast to 90

AboutThreeFitty, seems like you upgraded Ram in your Y460 to 4Gb Ram
Kingston V+ Series . Are they DDR3 1333 or 1066 ?
I think stock Ram come with Elphida 4Gb 1066. Do you know if motherboard
can support 1333 ? Do you see big performance boost from your Kingston V+ Series ? Thanks -

Got my SSD and installing it now.
I will test booting a hundred times and let you know the result, AboutThreeFitty. -
when Kingston V+ Series is the SSD brand. -

No booting problem of any sort with a SSD.

Hey all,
I bought a Y460 about a week ago. It's a really nice high-powered machine and I'm really happy with it.
That is, until it started BSOD'ing on me when I was at work and using Microsoft Office. I used BlueScreenView and took a photo of the error. Here it is:
http://img94.imageshack.us/img94/9665/bluescreenviewresult.jpg
Anybody else encounter a problem like this? Or know what's wrong (since I know nothing about these machines)? -
Thank you for testing for me. Now to figure out why mine sometimes won't boot.
-
Just installed my new Vertex LE 100G SSD into Y460. I don't see any boot issue.
I did a secure erase using gparted tool. Switched BIO into AHCI mode.
Reinstalled Win7 OS.
ATTO Disk Benchmark recorded :
Read 250 MB/s
Write 238MB/s
I think Vertex LE 100G works pretty nicely with Y460.
Got it from newegg 2 weeks back $270 after rebate. -

Hey, just thinking about another thing.
I solved my BSOD problem by using an old restore point before some updates were installed. I then turned off Windows Updates (I see no reason why I would get BSOD, I installed pretty much all of my programs and it still popped up, so I pretty much did a full reboot and now it doesn't seem to BSOD on me).
Few questions.
1 - Is it really safe to just NOT install windows updates? Some of them are security updates, and...well...
2 - I was playing Call of Duty: World at War and it was able to handle it pretty well, but it overheated. Reading through the thread I gathered that the laptop gets pretty hot when playing games - is there any way to fix this without getting a cooling pad?
3 - I can't install the BIOS! All the Lenovo site tells me to do is download the BIOS, restart my computer, and then double click the .exe - but I haven't had any luck with that, it loads, and then it just stops and the BIOS installer doesn't even boot up - anybody know why?
All in all, I've had pretty good luck with this bad boy - so long as I keep it on the power-saving GPU it doesn't get too hot and it still views videos and whatnot in pretty good resolution -
I just got my Y560 today, and unfortunately it seems I have a display problem (not the grainy one mentioned in previous posts). I have the Y560 with the ati 5750 (though it says 5730m ??), and when I connect it to my LCD monitor at 1920x1200 resolution VGA (or any other resolution for that matter), I can see white horizontal lines dancing around the screen. I tried updating the display drivers but it hasn't helped. Has anyone experienced the same/similar issue?
-
2. What do you mean by 'overheated'? What actual temp was the CPU at? The Intel Core series processors are engineered to work up to 100-105 C. Temps in the high 80s while playing demanding games is normal. When the CPU starts getting too close to this limit, it will throttle itself to cool down, preventing overheating. Just because your laptop is hot, doesn't mean that it actually overheated.
3. Someone posted a solution on this forum: Y560 - Cannot Update BIOS to ver. 57 - lenovo community Basically, you just have to use 7-zip or WinRAR to extract the actual BIOS installer from the self-extracting archive that you download from Lenovo. -
Does your monitor work normally with other computers? Horizontal lines on a monitor might me a broken monitor or a bad cable. -
thanks for the reply seeker_moc.
I did connect the monitor with another laptop and everything was fine (same resolution too). -
2. As in I was in the middle of playing COD: World at War and the computer shut off by itself. I suspected it was way too hot, so i flipped it over, and could barely put my finger on the back of it for more than a second, it was that hot. I figure it's possible a laptop could turn itself off as a failsafe if the internal temperature were too hot...
3. I'll get on that. It seems silly that they'd do that, doesn't it? -

Just updated Video Drivers from Lenovo website:
AMD Graphics Driver 8.702.5
Intel Onboard Graphics Driver 8.15.10.2104
I found out that Intel Driver need to be installed before the
AMD Driver or the switchable graphic function stop working.
When I check the screen refresh rate, it is default to 40Hz
and you can change it to 60Hz. I don't see any difference
between 40Hz and 60Hz. Does anyone know if it is better to
set screen refresh rate to 60Hz or should I leave it at default
of 40Hz ? Will 60Hz reduce battery life ? -
The site did a review for the y460... Lenovo IdeaPad Y460 Review
-
For those of us that bought their Y560 at Fry's Electronics:
I can't find a 3-digit model number (the one that comes after the "0646").
From Lenovo's website:
Lenovo - Laptops & netbooks - IdeaPad laptops - Y Series - Y560
I'm guessing this is a CTO (configure to order) model that was made just for Fry's. Best Buy does the same thing -- they have models of certain laptops that aren't listed anywhere on the manufacturer's website and usually have slightly lower specifications. -
And they have a typo near the end of the article, "U460" suppose to be "Y460" near the bottom of the first paragraph in the conclusion.
"The Lenovo IdeaPad U460 gives you..." -
As far as the BIOS goes, lots of old programs (like BIOS flashers) and self-extractors are 16-bit, and x64 versions of windows don't have 16-bit support. It's silly, but at least it's an easy fix. -
hello all first of all my english isnt very well i hope you ll understand to me.İn my opinion 0646-2AU and 2BU have display problem.but 02EU(frys and newegg sell this model) that raydabruce own hasnt display problem.are there any 2EU owners?
-
-
Raydabruce,
What model panel do you have in your Ideapad? All of us on the Lenovo forum that have the display problem have the AUO panel. However, someone from another thread has a CMO panel, and doesn't have any issues with it. Maybe some AUO panels are just bad. Now that I know the CMO panels work as they should, I have hope that they may actually be able to fix mine (assuming that the guys at the service center are smart enough to switch my panel out with a CMO one).
I have the 2AU model Y560. -
seeker_moc:
I don't know which panel I have or how to find out. Instructions? Neither Device Manager nor GPU-Z tells me anything about the monitor. Display properties says "Generic PnP Monitor" at 60Hz. That's it. Keep in mind that I'm not using the original Windows install that came with it. I put in a different HDD and put Win7 Ultimate 64-bit on it and then installed drivers from Lenovo's website.
Also, I don't know which exact model I have. It says only "0646" without the last three digits. So, I don't know if it's a 2AU or some other model or an exclusive model made just for Fry's. -
Raydabruce,
When you go into device manager, and click on the "Generic PnP Monitor", go to the Details tab, then on the pulldown menu, select "Hardware ID" It should say something like AUO, CMO, LG, SMS, etc. See http://consumersupport.lenovo.com/us/en/HintsandTips/hints_show_126111090066779.html
Everybody that has reported this problem so far have either AUO31EC or AUO40EC (most common). The only other LCD panel model reported on the forums, CMO1590, does not have the same problem, but only one person has reported having this model so far.
Doing research online, only AUO and CMO even make panels thin enough to fit into the Y560's frame, at 3.5mm - 3.8mm thick. All panels from other manufactures like Samsung, LG, etc are ~5.5mm or so thick. Maybe the thinness has something to so with some of our problems. -
The *2BU has the 720 processor, 8GB 1333 DDR3, and a 500GB 7200RPM HDD.
The *2AU has the 720 processor, 4GB 1333 DDR3, and a 500GB 7200RPM HDD.
The *2HU has the 720 processor, 6GB 1066 DDR3, and a 500GB 5400RPM HDD.
The *2EU has the 720 processor, 4GB 1066 DDR3, and a 500GB 5400RPM HDD.
The *2MU has the 450 processor, 4GB 1066 DDR3, and a 320GB 5400RPM HDD.
The *27U has the 430 processor, 4GB 1066 DDR3, and a 500GB 5400RPM HDD.
Those are all the models I could find. Everything else seems to be identical. -
Mine's AUO40EC with the problems.
Also the 2EU just started selling on Newegg this week.

seeker_moc:
Okay. I have the AUO40EC monitor. But my "model" doesn't fit any of those you described.
I have the i7-720QM, 4GB of PC3-10700 (1333MHz), and a Seagate Momentus 5400.6 (ST9500325AS) (5400rpm).
ST9500325AS Momentus 5400.6 SATA 3Gb/s 500-GB Hard Drive | Seagate
That's the drive it came with. I swapped it for a WD5000BEVT I had laying around.
So, with the faster RAM and slower HDD I don't fit any of the models you listed. I suspect it's a model made just for Fry's. But I DO have the AUO monitor and it works fine. I do NOT have switchable graphics. -
I think you might have the -2EU. That's the most common model in retail stores/websites. The sites I checked were divided on whether or not it was 1066 or 1333 RAM, some said one, some the other, some said nothing. It might be 1066 by default, but some shipped with 1333 instead if they ran out of 1066 (which I've heard happen with other manufactures, like ASUS, as well).
Either way, it's good to know that not everybody with the AUO40EC has that problem. I'm still waiting for mine to get back from the service center, but this gives me hope that some of us just got a bad (and replaceable) panel. -
I ordered a Y460 on the 21st and I got an email that it has already shipped, after 2 days! Anybody know where they get shipped from? The US or China? Thanks.
-
You will like the machine. 5650 mobility is quite amazing. -
I can't seem to get my notebook y560 to max fan speed, like then one you feel/hear when the notebook boots up. When I game, it always seems either idle or going at a low fan speed. Any suggestions?
-
-
5650 has been able to play everything I throw at it so far. Of course, Cyriss doesn't count. -

Hey guys..I'm considering buying this computer but I have some questions
1. What is y560 i7's battery life?
2. Does the i7 feature switchable graphic?
3. I heard there were a lot of defective screens in Y560..how serious is the problem?
4. is the y560d already out? -
1. About 3 hours.(i7)
2. No
3. Hit or miss. Some users on here say it is specific models.
4. Not quite. I just read an article that said it would be out in the near future.
Actual y560 owners will be able to elaborate more for you. -
anyone using S/PDIF output? When i use it, the laptop freezes at random times ?...
I'm trying to figure out what's causing it....
All the times it froze is when there was sound from webbrowser (i believe) -
Does the Y460 have the blu ray option or not? On the Lenovo site,
there are three models to pick from. One of them has the 5650 graphics,
but it just says CD/DVD drive. When you click "customize & buy" it's
not really customizing the hardware but just software. -
-
ok it's not the SPDIF, i just unpluged it, change the default device, rewind (click on a previous time) in winamp and it froze and the sound echoes/repeats .. i have no idea what is causing it, but it's related to sound.. i think.... realtek drivers (?)
-
Does anyone else notice a USB cable plugged into the E-SATA/USB hybrid port is a lot looser feeling than in the regular USB ports? Was wondering if they're all like that.
-
Alright I'm now very close on ordering a Y460. While I would probably prefer over-all the Y560 the switchable graphics, battery performance, smaller size, and cost makes this a better choice for my needs.
Outside of Lenovo, where's the best place to buy a Y460??? -
Can someone answer this question ASAP?
Does the Y560 allow for hdmi input? I'm thinking of getting a HD Camcorder, but i'm not sure how it will connect to the notebook; USB is clearly too slow and there is not firewire input. So does it have hdmi input?
Thanks -
Unless you're just asking if you could play (not edit or save) the video using your laptop screen as a display, in which case no, you can't do that. Just like you can't use the VGA port as an input.
You could possibly transfer the video via USB to your laptop as a file, and edit/play it then. I'm really not sure how the camcorders work like that, I just know you can't use HDMI for what you're intending. Or you could buy a firewire adapter for your express card port like this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16839200011 -
