Is there any way to play both from SPDIF (external speaker) and internal speakers at the same time?

or atleast have it auto switch the default device when the cable is connected/disconnected?

Either Lenovo.com or Newegg.com. You can't really configure it, though you have a choice of about 5 different pre-configured systems (3 on lenovo and 2 on newegg). If you buy it from lenovo.com, look for coupon codes online first, they come out often and knock around $300 off the price.

$879 is my total for the Y460 with i5. Anybody get a better price currently on this, and if so how?

Thinking about buying the Y560 with the i5 so it will have switchable graphics. What is the deal with screens on these? Are they all bad, just a select few? How about the ones with the screens that dont have problems, do they have nice screens?

Also these laptops dont have backlit keyboards do they? And how well does the facial recognition software work?

Sorry for all the questions guys im just trying to gather all my info before i buy

I have the screen problem, but some people don't. It's kinda hit or miss, but I couldn't give you a % or anything. Even without the 'static' or whatever you want to call it, the screen is only mediocre. But honestly, all laptop screens have been going down hill, not just the Y560s. If you want a nice screen you need to get a Dell Studio.

    No backlit keyboard unfortunately.

I'd avoid the facial recognition thing. It works, but I could put a picture of your face in front of the screen and gain full access to your laptop. Passwords are much better.

There's actually a feature called live detection that requires you to move back and forth through the frame to be granted access.

    Dell:

    Much better screen. More customizable.

    Lenovo:

Much better video card. Slightly better price/value ratio (depending on config).

As far as the gpu goes the laptop will never be used for gaming. So the switchable card I guess isnt necessary, I just really like the idea. I think the main thing getting me on the Y560 is its just so much better looking than the Studio 15. lol

    1. Call Lenovo. Exchange it for another Y460.
    2. Wait.

Why buy your own replacement part when Lenovo sent you a defective product? Screw that, make them pay for it. Call the warranty support line, they might just send you a new RAM chip without you having to send your laptop over to the depot.

Amen. Make them handle their error. And ThinkPads can be fussy about 3rd-party (aftermarket) RAM. No guarantee it'll work and could possibly void your warranty. Besides, with 2 modules, it's always best that they're a matched pair (same manufacturer, speed, CAS Latency, etc.).

"Cheap e-bay RAM". Sounds ominous. I wouldn't touch that unless it was free.

    Hey guys,

I tried playing a movie on my HDTV through HDMI port, and I get video but no sound...

I right clicked the speaker icon and made Realtek Digital Output as DEFAULT, but it still wouldn't play... I also restarted the video file after I connected it.

Any idea what I could do?

    Thanks

There are also 2 audio drivers installed on my system.

Realtek HDMI Audio Driver for ATI
    Realtek High Definition Audio Driver

When I right click my sound icon, I see the Speakers option and the High Definition Audio option.. Am I supposed to see an HDMI option also? Or are High Definition Audio and HDMI Audio the same thing?

    Thanks

To everybody out there who is having the Y560 display problem:

The service depot finally told me that the Lenovo engineers believe that the problem is in the BIOS, and are working on a BIOS update to fix it. They don't know when it will be released. Apparently, there are lots of Y560s sitting at the depot with this same problem. They will all be shipped back to the owners, unrepaired, to wait for the new BIOS release, which they think, but can't guarantee, will fix the problem.

I don't know if they even tried swapping out the screens as a fix.

Anyway, after having my laptop sit at the depot for 17 days (even though I bought the next-day at-home warranty service) it's finally coming back. As soon as it does, it's back to Lenovo it goes for a refund. I hope that anyone else out there with this display issue will either get a fixed BIOS soon, or their money back as well.

Edit: It ended up not getting back to me until the 9th, after 26 days at the depot. At least they're giving me a 100% refund.

Hi there, i`ve got Y560 and a little problem, my cpu fan is running all the time at higher speed. Don`t know the speed, as software which monitores it doesn`t work, but i can hear that the speed isn`t normal.

Also i have quite low temps (i think so) - 37 Celsius idle - about 100F, but the cpu fan still runs very fast and it`s quite frustrating as you can hear it all the time.

I`ve used prime95 for 5 minutes and temp. reached, with small FFTs, 58 Celsius - 136F. The funny thing is that cpu fan didn`t work much faster during 100% load :(

The problem might be that cpu fan runs @ higher speed and pwm doesn`t work, but what to do?

What about your idle temps and cpu fan? Is your fan loud @ idle?

EDIT: wrrr ... i`ve set automatic speed of processor - idles @ 34C - 93F with multiplier x 9 ... but the cpu fan is so loud.

EDIT2: when you start notebook and don`t stress cpu - all is fine ... but when you stress it then the cpu cooler won`t slow down, even the temperature goes down ... s%&t

EDIT3: Installing new BIOS helped a little ... software "reads" the cpu temps. as a little higher than before but the cpu cooler shuts down from time to time, when temperature reaches about 42C - 107F.

Plug in the HDMI cable, go into the realtek audio manager and set HDMI as default.

Or you can right click on the volume icon beside the clock playback devices> select HDMI as default, **the HDMI cable needs to be connected**

The "Digital Output" in the realtek audio manager is for Optical Out via hte 3.5 jack.

I don't see the HDMI option in my realtek audio manager.. I only see the Digital Output option. Should I just reinstall the driver? Would that fix it?

Is the HDMI cable plugged in? It has to be plugged in, in order for you to select it as the audio output.

Yes it is a consumer laptop. It looks like you are going to depend on your laptop for a major part of your school so there is no need to get an Ideapad. The Thinkpad series is the way to go for serious school and business work.

I haven't heard anything too bad, but the y460's can get very hot while gaming. The only reason why I said to get a Thinkpad is because of how important the laptop will be to you. All it takes is a split second for something to happen to it.

Well, the W510 is the only "Think" line system that has a graphics chip powerful to play games on. However, it is a Quattro chip, with drivers that are designed to support professional graphics like CAD or video rendering, not for playing games. Although it is powerful enough, and should play most games, some games might run buggy because the drivers aren't written or optimized for them.
