I have the Che Mei screen (CMO) and I don't think I'm having any of these problems. Black levels aren't perfect, but then it's a 14" commodity display in a sub-$1000 laptop, so I'm not expecting miracles either ;)

It may be that they're using a 6-bit panel, in which case no manner of driver or firmware updates is going to fix dithering issues.

The website is all screwed up (The Indian one)

it shows the clock speeds of all processors to be the same =/
Features arent explained or given properly either..

Do you know of any helpline number?

    It's just fine, actually.

Just look at the name of the processor.

Admitedly though, I had some confusion when selecting my laptop because the website said Madison XT-M2 instead of HD5730.

I don't know any helpline numbers.

It shows both the 430m and 450m to be the same price =/

The features arent stated for the 450m (no TV tuner maybe?) -.- Croma employees are stupid too

It will show up in the device manager properties as a unique device ID string. There's no way to 'know' until you get it on your desk, unless the manufacturer somehow guarantees you a specific unit (don't hold your breath, unless you're buying a Mac.) Looks like Lenovo is using at least two vendors for their panels on the Y460; dunno how many it might be for the Y560.
There really isn't a way to tell that, either.

Croma employees know literally nothing, don't worry.

Get a quote from somewhere. They give the exact details.

I would like to check with you guys here who owns a Y460 with 64-bits Windows 7....

Are you able to do a disk check on System Drive C:, either from command line using Chkdsk C:/F or scheduling a disk check under Disk Properties_Tools_Scan Now?

I am unable to do a disk check either way. Scheduled disk checks keep cancelling automatically after the timer appears. I know there is a MS hotfix for a problem like this but it does not help.

After giving up and doing a clean re-install of Windows 7 64-bits from a installation disk, I check the possibility of running a scheduled disk check after EVERY installation of a driver. Everything tested ok until the Synaptics Touchpad driver is installed. Once that driver is installed, scheduled disk checks can no longer run. Uninstall the driver and you get your scheduled disk checks back. Its repeatable over any number of times. This happens on a clean Windows 7 install as well so it is highly likely a driver problem and not a OS problem.

The trouble is, if I do not install the Synaptics drivers, the touch-sensitive buttons no longer work. If I install it, Chkdsk no longer works. Apparently, Lenovo bundled the drivers for the touch buttons into the Synaptics drivers (you can compare the size between Lenovo's drivers and stock Synaptics drivers - there is a size difference of approx. 10Mb) so there is no way to NOT install the Synaptics drivers but have the touch buttons working. :(

Anyone else experience the same problem or have a work-around for this?

BTW: I have contacted Lenovo's helpline but haven't got any useful solutions out of them yet. SFC /Scannow reported no problems with windows.

I went ahead and tried your checkdisk issue on my Y460 with Win7 Pro 64, and it also cancels my scan as well. Interesting...

I am very surprised that no one mentioned this problem before in the 171 pages of Y460 discussion! :D

Disabling the Synaptics drivers start up in Msconfig would disable the touch buttons but does not solve the disk check problem. I suspect there is some other services or components that is responsible for this problem. However I can't seem to find the offending service..... :(

I guess, generally speaking, it doesn't worry me. If I ever feel like I need to check my disk, then I've got bootable tools for that. Since I'm on an SSD, I'd prefer to have direct control over that behavior anyway :)

    Hi guys!

After a couple of days of deciding between the y460 or the acer 4820tg and of course browsing through all the user comments in this forum, I finally decided to purchase a Y460 from singapore. The processor is the i5-430m unfortunately, because I couldn't afford the 540m XD. Anyways, everything about this laptop is simply amazing. The power, the portable, the audio and the gaming potential! Even the battery life is amazing! My y460 can reach 7-8 hours of battery life (just like what the timeline series advertisement) on normal typing use without wifi. With wifi, it can do 5-6 hours of surfing as long as its not a busy site and has not much flash content. I am very very happy and satisfied!

Although I think the reason why i could reach such battery life levels is that Lenovo sold me a battery pack thats marked at 70mw/h according to battery bar. I know its suppose to be only 57 mw/h, but I got a 70 mw/hr battery... Maybe thats why i could reach those levels! The design capacity did say that the capacity of the battery is suppose to be 64 mw/h...

Overall I believe this is a great buy!

P.S. I'd also like to thank AlbuquerqueFX for his post of reducing the transmit power of the wifi as it greatly helped surfing battery life and also for the tip in updating the graphics to the latest driver. Thanks!

So I haven't been on this thread for a while, so I am sorry if this has been addressed before, but has anybody noticed the keys leaving a slight imprint on the screen after opening the laptop? I've had my y460 for a few months now, and just recently I have started noticing that when my screen is black, I can see the outline of most of the keys. I searched around for an answer to this, and it seemed like the only place I could find it discussed was related to older macs. I guess it was considered a defect for apple so they replaced them. I just got off the phone with lenovo tech support, however, and they said they had never heard of such a thing.

Any ideas? Should I just not worry about? I can use my screen cleaner and microfiber cloth to clean off the marks... but doing that every time? Seems kind of annoying for such an expensive machine. Also I realize I can just place a cloth in the laptop when I close it or something, and if no one else has heard of this that might be my best option.

    Thanks for any help.

I have heard a few people mention it on here. I'm assuming that the nobs that are around the screen aren't doing their jobs too well. Does it do it under normal usage? I have been taking mine to class and I have about 30lbs of books against it, but it has yet to do it.

I just started going to school again, and I have just started noticing it happening - so there is a good chance it is due to being in a backpack. It seems to happen even when just sitting around the house though. It's really not that big of a deal I guess...if any real damage happens I'll go after lenovo tech support a little more agressively.

I have not been very impressed at all with my Y460s build quality. My left mouse button gives a horrible grating squeak every time I press it. Also, over half of the time the space bar does not make a space when I press it; there seem to be some spots on it where it depresses, but doesn't register an input. Does anyone else have these issues?

10.8's had nothing I was interested in. 10.7's worked fine, with the standard caveat that you'll need to shut the box off via your power key after you've run this.

I've seen nothing like this. It sounds like a lower bezel alignment issue, since your spacebar AND your mouse button are both obviously not aligning correctly...

Hey all, what realtek audio drivers addressed the issue of HDMI output? Got my Y460 working now on my 42" Vizio, looks great, but I would like to have the sound running on the TV. I have the latest drivers from the Lenovo site, but that doesn't seem to have the HDMI fix on it.

    Thanks!

FYI, ran 3DMark06' and got a 7495, nothing OC'd, standard 64 bit Win7 Pro installation.

@Mathishard - Well... I spent $1000 on a laptop and $1000 on a hdtv, and it took your post to point out to me it might be a good idea to spend a small fraction of that amount to actually get a wireless keyboard and mouse to actually use the two together properly. I have no idea why the idea of a wireless setup never registered for me. I was actually wondering where I could get a 15 foot HDMI cable. In my defense, it is a little late.

My i7 8GB Ideapad will be showing up tomorrow if I am very lucky, more likely the day after.

Im running the latest drivers from the lenovo site too and finally go the hdmi audio out. With the hdmi connected to the tv, go to device manager. You will find hdmi audio device disable under system devices. Enable it then go to audio devices and make it default.

Do this whenever hdmi goes missing. :) It becomes disabled after a while for some reason. The latest Realtek drivers causes audio from some video formats to stutter on the tv. Im sticking with Lenovo approved driver versions. :)

10.8 is incompatible with our y460. I got it to install but bsod. Its very hard to uninstall this. Use driver sweeper (safe mode), your uninstaller(manually removed files) and still manually removed registry folders (ati and ati technology) in regedit.

Im back to the lenovo approved version (320 mb plus package) and Im staying with it. Of course amd gpu overclock tool is on whenever I play. (700, 950 for my corei5 450m version) haha

I spoke with our local lenovo office. She adviced me to stay with what Lenovo has for our model. From my experience with Realtek latest drivers and now the 10.8, Im starting to believe here. My only driver not from the Lenovo site now is the latest rapid storage driver of intel.

That is the standard position you'll hear from every Lenovo employee -- use their software, not anyone elses. For the group who is responsible for warranty support of your device, it IS the right answer. For someone interested in maximum performance, it leaves much to be desired.

The only "Lenovo" branded driver in my system is the switchable Intel graphics driver (which is a requirement for basic switching capabilities), their two Energy drivers for the obvious gains there, and the touchpad driver to retain my touch button functionality.

Everything else, from the ATI card, to the Broadcom NIC, to the Realtek audio is all drivers provided by the individual manufacturers after I fully reinstalled my own Win7Pro 64 OS. They're FAR newer than anything on Lenovo's website, and performance and stability is notably increased on my system. The ATI Cat 10.7's are the most measurable difference in performance, second was the Intel Wireless driver (especially in terms of power efficiency), and the Intel chipset / RST stuff was also a big win for my OCZ Vertex 2 Extended 120Gb drive.

I also left out a bunch of the goofy Lenovo nonsense that I don't care about, such as the swipe functionality, the webcam logon nonsense, the video 'enhancement' key, and basically every other app they wedged into their base OS.

Microsoft Windows 7* 64-Bit Drivers for Intel® WiFi adapters

After installing this, for maximum efficiency (this really drove up my battery life when surfing), I went into device manager, opened up network devices, opened up the properties of my wireless card, and turned down the transmit power drop-down to "Minimum". This isn't the same as the wireless power setting in the standard Power control panel applet, and I've yet to have any measurable problems in my house or at my office with the power turned all the way down.

    It will depend...

Using the Intel graphics, I have High Definition Audio Device which has a device ID of HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_10EC&DEV_0272 (this would be the RealTek device, as evidenced by it's vendor and device ID.) If I switch to the ATI graphics, a second device ATI High Definition Audio Device appears, with a device ID of HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_1002&DEV_AA01 (this would be the ATI output device, again as evidenced by the unique vendor and device ID string.)

The ATI one only shows up if the ATI graphics are enabled.

    AlbuquerqueFX,

I downgraded from the latest realtek hd driver to the one installed on my drivers folder. The new one causes my mp4 files to stutter on the plasma tv. The stock one works as is. Must be a driver conflict. I use shark 007 for my codec upgrade.

I guess I just don't understand the problem fully...

When you upgrade your ATI drivers, you can use the onboard HDMI audio output of your ATI card -- and you're not stuck using the Realtek output. I don't know your exact situation, but my HDMI output to a dedicated audio-capable HDMI device does not suffer these issues that a multitude of folks have mentioned.

Primarily, I assume, because I'm not using the Realtek HDMI audio stack.

Plug it into the HDMI jack? ATI's HDAudio device shows as the active device in my audio output applet when it's plugged in. My TV at home uses a DVI input so it can't use the audio over HDMI, but I've had the laptop at a friends house to watch Netflix HD on his Sammy 50" LCD box and that's how it was working there.

I only see Realtek hdmi output ATI HDMI Audio. Is that what you have as well?

Normally when I plug it on our panasonic plasma, the hdmi is disabled in device manager. So I have to manually enable it first to have sound from the TV. Have you experienced this?

Thank you for the tip, I tried this as well, unfortunately for me I started having intermittent connectivity issues with mine, only lowering to "medium" for testing. Glad it works well for you, on mine I need to leave it on high, even though my laptop is sitting right next to my router, strange...

I see both, but neither is disabled in my device manager when plugged in. I don't recall having to do anything at all in order for the ATI HDMI out to be the active audio output when using the HDMI jack connected to an audio-channel capable HDMI device. Again, my TV at home is DVI only, so I use an HDMI-to-DVI jack and the audio still comes out of my Realtek analog output. In that scenario, the HDMI output is 'disabled' -- but only in the Audio devices control applet, and not in device manager.

That is strange. I'm using a pretty old WRT54G v2 router (I think they're on, what, version six now?) and my usual place to lounge while on the laptop wirelessly is about 50 feet from the router (through two walls.) I actually recall seeing my wireless bars last night -- all five bars were green, and my transmit rate seemed to stay right at 36mbit. However, perhaps you're on an N network? I haven't tried this on an N network yet...

Also keep in mind that this transmit setting is different than Windows power settings in power management. There are some routers out there that don't deal well with the Windows power management feature, and those that weren't compatible had problems with disconnection or not getting an IP. You might try looking at turning off the Windows wireless power savings in your power profile, and then re-adjusting your transmit power in device manager. They do very different things...

    AlbuquerqueFX,

Thanks for the info, that cleared it up. It seems those using HDMI does have this disable in Device manager issue. NO biggie, at least I just turn it on when its not there. Settings should stick, maybe a regedit visit and tweak is in order. Also, those using hdmi connections should stick with the latest on Lenovo. The new one from Realtek works for most but stutters with .mp4 on media player. Btw, is our mp 64bit already?

Have you found the solution on how to may the synaptics touch pad pointer setting stick? I have a Logitech G9x and use its software. I previously had a work around for this in my Hp xpsp3 set up. With windows 7, argh! Everytime I restart, ponter speed is back to default (mid).

What do I need to put a 2nd hard drive in the dvd drive?

    Regards

u need an obhd sata caddy see
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/lenovo-ibm/453345-new-y460-y560-ideapads-114.html#post6326196

u can probably buy a cheaper caddy thru ebay

the hdmi thing is definitely driver Dependant--the behavior here depends on which drivers u have installed. if u updated ati drivers and realtek ati audio device u may have to switch to integrated video then again switch to discrete for the hdmi audio device to reappear .i have native hdmi from laptop to display with speakers, so i don;t believe this is related to any dvi to hdmi cables. this was not an issue before i installed realktek-ati hdmi driver

the intel drivers do rock for wifi, you can get a 3 antenna card , run 5ghz and if u set it to minimum it stays cool, with good throughput albeit range is definitely reduced. at least their drivers give u the choice :)
interesting note is upgrading the nic to a 3 antenna intel version also enables u to run widi off the laptop , so for watching movies on the big screen u can ditch the hdmi cable :)

Actually, I am using a WRT54G v3, one version up from yours.... :) Latest firmware and everything.

I have zero complaints about the speed of my downloads with the stock wifi, it screams, it just seems I can't lower the setting with mine. Not a huge deal, but somethign cool to try nonetheless.

Looks like Dilligaf has a bit more experience with the various HDMI requirements than I do. I figured it was probably something to do with the drivers being used, but have no way to specifically support that :) Thanks for your input.

Nailz, that's still pretty weird about your power settings, but I suppose it's not much of an issue. If you're happy with it, then I cannot imagine any problems!

Hello, first time poster, been pouring over these boards for several days now. I believe I've finally decided on the y460 i5-460, 5650, etc. I'm hoping I can get a few questions answered first.

    1. I see a lot of heat related complaints while playing games. My question is whether or not these reported temperatures are any higher or lower than other laptops with similar configurations and running similar loads..

    2. On that note, do cooling pads make a significant and worthwhile difference for this issue, or are they a gimmick.

    3. As for the rapid drive, is the 32g SSD pre-installed on the computer or do I need to buy it and add it later?

    4. How will disabling bluetooth affect battery life, looking for numbers here if anyone has them.

    Thanks in advance!

    @FiremanMike

    1. Internally, yes. Most other laptops with similar specs have the same temps. I have seem some about 5C cooler or so, but it's not a night and day difference.

    2. I saw a decent drop with my GPU, but the CPU and hard drive didn't drop. But it has made a huge difference on the laptop itself. Before the bottom was so hot I couldn't touch it, now it stays nice and cool.

    3. If it comes with RapidDrive then yes it will be good to go.(Check to see if it does have it, as some models do not come with RapidDrive)

    4. I would have to imagine it would help to save the battery. I never have mine on so I can't really help you.

(Sorry I didn't quote you, it wouldn't let me  )

How about the external heat that you feel on your lap and hands..

I'll have to look harder and see if I can find it, if it doesn't come with Rapid Drive, can I add an SSD later, or does it not even come with the software?

On a side note, while it says it's available for some models, I don't see it explicitly listed on any of y460 models listed. My preference is the Y460-06334GU, i5-460 model..
