just search this thread, there might be others about overclocking and 3dmark scores
cooling pad isn't really neccessary but it does get pretty warm -

LE: If CPUZ says I have 30CN62WW does it mean I have BIOS 62 ? On Lenovo's site 59 shows as the last BIOS. -
he ran it in dual monitor
download a driver cleaner/sweaper
uninstall amd/ati graphics card
boot into safe mode run the driver cleaner/sweaper
restart
install the graphics card driver
not sure about the cpuz bios thing -
I'm wondering if anybody can help with this: I decided to install a fresh, clean copy of Windows 7 Home Prem. 64 on my Y460. I wanted to get rid of all the junk Lenovo puts on there...but when I enter the serial at the bottom of my notebook, W7 doesn't accept it and says I have to phone in to activate my copy? I don't think I've done anything illegal. Maybe it's because my notebook's key is OEM and the W7 I used is retail? How do I go about solving this? Will Msft give me a new key? Thanks.
Edit: I tried re-entering my serial and it successfully activated online now. Maybe I had typed it wrong. -

u do realize that not all 3820tg/4820 tg overclock that high, right?
the 10k scores u may have seen is a product of 2 overclocks on 3820tg and that score is valid at 768, not 1280*1024
its a product of vid overclock AND cpu overclock. Note the cpu used for this is usually an overclocked i7-620m in the 3820tg
since set fsb has to be used for cpu overclock you have to have a motherboard with a supported *programmable* clock generator pll. manufacturers are well known for changing the pll as needed even within a production lifecycle of a given laptop model--in plain english if you buy a 3820/4820 it may not come with a clock gen supported by set fsb. this is not guaranteed
on this subject i identified the clock gen for y460 on my mobo, contacted set fsb and paid 5 bux, and provided pll documentation--developer looked into it and the clock gen on my y460 is not programmable so not cpu overclockable via set fsb. lenovo could change the clock gen in the future or maybe they already have, just my older y460 from may (built in march) may not have the latest....
for vantage, ssd makes bigger impact than an overclock , so if you are looking for gaming data this is probably not the best bench. 3dmark06 is probably more accurate for pure gaming data
as far as vid overclocks , i can get 740/940 overclock on my y460 albeit the acer 3820 can do higher--it has two fans/heatsinks so can cool the cpu gpu better (vid card maybe overclockable to around 800/1100 in the 3820). note the 4820 probably won;t have this behavior since it uses 1 cooler and has a dvd drive in place of the second cooler. 4820 would behave similar to y460
that said i upgraded my y460 to i7 620m in 1280*768 i get a 3dmark06 score of ~9000 with a conservative overclock of video 700/900 and no cpu overclock at all. based on playing with this i suspect a 10%+ cpu overclock AND another 10% vid overclock would be needed on toip of my existing overclocks to break 10k
the 3820 is not bad, altho i considered it early on, i pulled the trigger on the 460 for really 2 reasons over the 3820:
1) i could not live with an idea of only 1 "small" ssd (i have 160gb intel gen 2), so i wanted a machine where i could replace dvd drive with a caddy. that left 4820 and y460 for me
2) build quality, looks and keyboard. i did not want another grey laptop , mushy keyboard and mediocre screen, i got what i wanted--very bright screen, nice design, and a keyboard second only to thinkpads (imho, since this is pretty subjective stuff)
cheers

Hi all,
I bought a y560 and changed the windows on it. now when I want to use the function keys nothing displays on the screen!!! thought they are working but for turning on the wireless it's needed to be shown. what should I do? there is no driver for this and it's website sucks. please help me I'm having hard times -
Lenovo Ideapad Support & downloads - Drivers & Downloads
under "power management" -
I tried updating the drivers to 10.8 using the link that AlbuquerqueFX provided earlier (but with the file title changed to 10-8 instead of 10-7), but when I attempted to install the drivers my computer BSODed halfway through the installation and I had to do a system restore. Does anyone know why the 10.7 drivers work, but the 10.8 drivers from the same source do not?

Hello Most excellent,
I just ordered a Y560 with the i3-370 from Lenovo
This is the first computer I have owned in 15 years. Am excited to be on the learning curve and to not have to borrow others humanbeings machines!!!! thaT IS QuiTe perilOUs !
1.Any advice on a game to purchase which will push the computer to the limit, for testing hardware to see if there are any problems rite out of the box?
(Maybe something a couple of years old, so as not to cost to much cash)
2.Any other advise on initial tests to catch hardware flaws immediately?
3.I am planning to learn Ubuntu 10.1 and want to have a dual boot system.
------------Have meditated on having multiple partitions each with Windows7 in it so that I can just go to town surfing the web anywhere and not worry about Viruses and also be able to mess with my settings all I want, you know, make a mess and see what falls out!
4.I know I need to get rid of some bloatware. I was thinking maybe I should buy a 20Gb external SSD drive to have a mirrored backup of my original OS setup so that when I crash the whole system I can instantly reboot, reload, and restart from scratch. I figure once I settle in and know what I'm doing I can use the same USB SSD as a game drive to help with load times.
I have had a good time reading and participating in the forums on this website so far, and plan to continue to post here as things continue; whether it goes goood or Baaad.

Hey Droko: Glad to see you again over here. I'm just gonna address a couple of points other than games.
A. You may choose to install Microsoft Security Essentials as an adequate protection. Read up and then download ( your first exercise: download and install) here:
B. If you like to experiment with Ubuntu 10.10, you can download the "CD image" from the Ubuntu website and "burn" it to a blank CD ( your second exercise: download and burn a bootable CD). Go here to learn more:
The wonderful thing about Ubuntu is that you can run it alongside Windows 7. After you burn the Ubuntu installation CD and insert it into the CD/DVD drive, you will be given the choices. The installation process is very user-friendly.
C. No need to buy an expensive 20GB external SSD. An external USB-powered 250GB hard drive will be good enough, around $100 or less at Amazon, Western Digital and Seagate being two popular brands. Use this to back up your personal documents.
D. No need to worry about "bloatware" as there is virtually none on your Y560. The crazy practice of loading bloatware by PC manufacturers is over. You may choose to either purchase Microsoft Office (Home edition) or download OpenOffice for free. By the way, the latter comes as default on Ubuntu.
E. Last but never least, your very first exercise: Find out about making System Recovery Disks for your Y560. I can tell you about what ThinkPad users do as soon as they turn on their computers for the first time: make System Recovery Disks. You will need 3 blank DVD-R's for this. If something goes every wrong and the system hard drive becomes confused, you can always use the System Recovery Disks to restore the Y560 back to factory-install state, just like when you take it out of the box. (In the future, if you decide to sell your Y560, you will also want to put the hard drive back to factory-install state as a courtesy to your buyer.) Anyway, find out more about this in relation to the IdeaPad.
Good luck! -
Thanks Kaso.

uhh i would be carefull with this one when it comes to laptop benches
"With 3dmark06 I think everyone uses 1280x1024 as standard procedure when comparing scores with other laptops. I only use the m17x benchmarks thread as reference. "
If you read the acer forum (and lot of other forums, and review sites like Anandtech) most LAPTOP benches are done at native laptop rez which for these machines is of 1366*788 (note how m15 and other more powerfull dtr-laptops get benched in 1280*1024 since those laptop screen supports the 1280 1024 rez natively, without external monitor), so these smallish 13-14 inchers use 768 and 3dmark defaults to 1280*768..these scores tend to be ~20-25% lower then benching at 1280*1024
if you check the acer forum specifically around 3820 the screenshots show 1280*768
this is one of the "annoying trends" in laptop benches --benching at laptop's native rezx, and i think it's sorta apples to oranges ( i understand some people will be playing on laptop screen and want to know perf data per that, but i also feel everyone should objectively test , and 1280*1024 is good, not like it's "high rez" by todays standards, it;s more the laptop manufs being "criminal" putting crap lcd's in, perpetuating the mediocre experience ).
my reco is to try to use chip specs to be as objective as possible to make sence of this ---my desktop radeon 5870 has 1600 shaders 256 bit mem bus and ddr5, these 5650 have 400 shaders, 128 bit bus ddr3 mem. the mobile chips is 1/3 the "paper spec" of a destop 5870, and the scores should be commesurate. my desktop 5870 scores 18.5k at 1280*1024, so the 5650 should score around 5.5-6.5k, which is pretty close to the actual- i get 6700 on y460 at 1280*1024
you would need close to 30% overclock across the board (gpu core, gpu mem, and cpu) to hit 10k at 1280* 1024 with a 5650 starting with 520m. it's possible but would probably require removing laptop bottom and using extravagant cooling, i doubt the acers hit this
on the same subject i find it funny people say these machines are GPU limited in games, and not cpu limited
This is Not really the case, 2-2.4 ghz is not "gpu bound" it just means it;s "fast enough cpu to actually play games"
i upgraded from 520m to 620m and every single game is working at least 10% faster, meaning lotsa cpu headroom left to eat thru, since i got 10% gain for 10% clock speed bump
gpu limited does not become an issue untill higher rez like 1680*1050 or 1080p+ where it's not really gpu but GPU-Memory bandwith bound-- i suspect to really go you would need 256 mem bus or ddr5or better yet both (blackbomb march 2011?)
some games (especially crappy pc ports, like gta, darksiders, etc) are very cpu bound due to crap port., and whats arguably the most popular engine today (unreal engine) very much likes fast cpu around 2 core 2.8ghz
the "gaming sweetspot" today as far as cpu appears to be 3ghz, 2+ cores--this is really where most games start to "flatline" and stop showing gains somwehat.
none of these machines (5650 level of perf, around 2.4 dual core) are in that sweetspot, they are just "enough" to make it work, and should "do the trick" fo enable a decent/average experience in 90% of games at 768 for the next year or 2 till new consoles come out and new dx does.crysis 2/metro 2033 at max need not apply, better stick with a beefier laptop dtr spec for stuff like that
some empirecical data: my y460 runs fallout new vegas at 1920*1200 at High (with antialiasing turned off) preset in the 30-40 fps range. my desktop 5870 runs MAX preset with MAX aa at the same rez at 60+ fps unflicnging. gap here is substantial
i "bit the bullet" and diteched my desktop and it's performance, and i am happy with y460, but i knew i would be loosiing a ton of perf ,and i can empahsize witht he tough decision. the ssd has been a god send in this regard, since everything i do excep tfor gaming was IO bound.
i can play the same games as i used to on the desktop, just now things like MAX settings and 8x aa are not possible (by comparison most games on y460 run at Medium or High with no aa at all) and the visual difference can be very striking, when shown on a large 24+ inch monitor. as i get older max settings don;t mean as much as they used, altho i suspect for some folks this will bee too much to swallow
just don;t want you to spend your money and FEEL dissapointed, like you got ripped off or lied to
i like the y460 but perf wise it's basically a battery powered xbox 360 built to play those games at 720p like the xbox360. this ain;t the 14" laptop that will drive those games at 1080p hq...i am not sure if one like that exists yet..noone has managed to shove 3ghz , with gpu using gddr5 in something this small in terms of power envelope and physical size, altho it maybe around the corner (640m from intel, and the next gen mobility 6000 series middle chip on paper have what it takes since the updated ati mobility start to use ddr5 in the middle of the road chips and not just high end)
i realize this may sound like a very opinionated post, but check out some review sites to corroborate the benchmark thing. notebookcheck and anand have lotsa laptop reviews
cheers
D -
It's not opinion if you back it up with facts Dilligaff, thanks for the post.
How much difference would it make to your frame rates if you upgraded to 8GB of RAM and a 7200 RPM drive, or potentially one of those new hybrids with 4GB of SSD on them?
I love my Y460 as well, but would love to see a bit more performance, I was paying "The Nightmare Before Christmas" for my boy the other day (it was a Blu-Ray rip) and it seemed to shudder every few minutes. AT 4.5GB, it's a big file to run, I wonder if upgrading components would help stop that.... -
4.5GB is not really big for a Blu-Ray rip, I would say its more like codec settings problem rather than the specs, try Media Player Classic - Home Cinema to run it..
You could also set it to use DXVA to decode the video for less CPU usage.. -
Hi, I'm a potential new buyer of the Y560 and I'm really concerned about how large and widespread of the problem the screen defects, BSOD, and various other blemishes are. If I buy one, am I doomed to go through all of the same problems other people are going through? Would you recommend the Y560 to any of your friends, or is the laptop just too problematic?
I have other models of computers in mind, but having 20+% off for employee status at IBM (along with 10% coupons), I can bring down $1500 to about $1000.
Thanks! -
I used a Y550P, and its replacement, and a Y550. So yes, I was terribly unlucky, and there was a heap of problems. BSODs were uncountably frequent. White screens also occurred. It wasn't just me, other Ideapad users reported these issues on the Lenovo forums. You could check those out.
But, there exist other Lenovos and Ideapads with no problems. But you had fair warning, so be prepared. Ironically Y550P/560 was the high end Ideapads/Lenovos and had arguably more problems than the much cheaper ones. If you're an employee, there shouldn't be a problem returning them or getting them fixed if problems do arise. -
media player classic home cina should do the trick for blu ray rips, and as far as video watching the machine has plenty of cow bell out the box to do it. if there are slowdowns it's probably driver related, player related or maybe a just a bad encode.
imho 2 top upgrades which are worth it are:
1) ssd (price about to get slashed in half since intel releasing new ssd this quarter). good ssd is pure productivity beast, imho makes bigger impact than fast cpu
2) faster cpu ---620m is definately supported , the newer 640m is even faster but i am not sure if bios supports it in 460/560
cheers

Does anyone else experience sound interference? When using external speakers or headphones, I can clearly hear CPU related noise coming from the speakers/headphones; it stops momentarily when I close a window, and changes slightly when I move my mouse. This noise is only noticeable when the laptop volume is low, and the speaker volume is higher. It doesn't appear to increase with system volume, so I don't notice it with higher system volume and lower speaker volume.
-
ooops !!!!!!
-
-
Would an external usb sound card (like some of the x-fi's) get rid of this problem?
-
nailz frames/fps will be 99% limited by either cpu or gpu.
upgrading gpu here is out of the question so cpu is left as an option, which is why i upgraded from my 520m to 620m.
incidentally i am selling the 520m if someone wants it. 320$ msrp is not worth the upgrade but i got the 620m used, at a much better price then msrp
ram will not affect frame rates ( if u want to get granular/technical, lower latency ram may have something like 1% fps increase)
for daily use i have become huge ssd fan, since i am big on browser and "open in new tab" like mad-mansince this type of task is bound by disk, ssd makes the experience infinitely faster. matter of fact i put a fast ssd into an older atom netbook and for basic browsing it's now 99% as fast as my 460.
sound buzzing --i hear reverting to old Lenovo supplied realtek driver may help the issue, and remove the buzz altho i have not tried this. for me personally it was not a big enough annoyance to spend time on.
hdmi audio does not seem to suffer from the issue.
also note u can get optical/digital out using one of these Amazon.com: Toslink To Optical Mini Adapter: Electronics: Reviews, Prices & more
i have used those adapters on other laptops with 100% success , just in my daily use of y460 i have not had the need to set it up like that.
imho usb sound cards are average and even tho they may reduce hiss they still sound average at best. (comparable to realtek integrated audio)
i also may upgrade sound albeit if i do i will get the real deal Echo Digital Audio Corporation
imho not worth bs'ing with various "cheap" usb audio (if you see creative labs, run the other way). if you are serious about sound, go for the real deal
sound is SUPER subjective tho..alot of people think the iphone/android/blackberry with stock earbuds or bluetooth stereo headset sounds "good" or "above average"...if you are in this boat i would recommend trying to fix the driver or buy the cheapest usb interface u can, you will find it meeting your expectations
if you are the type of person that owns a set of "cans" or a headset amp, or can tell the difference in sound quality between a 128kbit mp3 and a 256kbit mp3 you will find value in something like the indigoIOX
cheers
D -
I have decent speakers and HD280 pro headphones so sound quality does matter to me.
However, I managed to "fix" the problem. When I am experiencing the noise, if I unplug the line out cable and plug it back in, all interference noise goes away. I have no idea why this works, but it seems to every time. -
It might be related it might not be but I eliminated the buzz out of a friend's home studio setup that included his computer by putting some 3 prong to 2 prong power cord adapters so that there isn't that ground prong. I can't say I'm an expert on the whole grounding but did a good amount of research and that's what did the trick. I can't say either if it's safe or not. Worked like a charm though and was super cheap and easy lol.
-
its not a grounding problem; the noise happens with the computer unplugged and running on battery as well. It seems to be an internal computer issue that gets fixed by temporarily reverting to the internal speakers then switching back to the line out.
-
Hey all, i'm new here so i'm not 100% sure this is the right place to ask this question...
Anyway, i'm considering buying a 14" laptop and i have narrowed down my choices to a few models:
- Lenovo Y460 (i5 450 M 2.4 GHz, Ati 5650, HDD 500 GB 7200rpm + 32 GB SSD, 4gb ram)
- Asus K42JV (i5 520 2.4 Ghz, Nvidia G335M, HDD 500 GB 7200rpm, 4 Gb ram, USB 3.0)
- Asus N82 JV (i5 520 2.4 Ghz, Nvidia GT335M, HDD 500 GB 7200rpm, 2 Gb ram, USB 3.0)
Regardless of the price, does the Y460 really stand out? My usage would be: a bit of gaming, video editing (HD 720p) with Pinnacle studio 14 HD, a bit of Photoshop and light internet surfing...
The Y460 seems to have a longer battery life in integrated graphics mode and no doubt that the 32 GB SSD hdd would make boot time shorter.
I have read the Y460 heats up pretty much while gaming and that its keyboard tends to flex.
What do you think?
Cheers -
Pete,
Where do you find a Y460 with 7200rpm + 32 GB SSD for sale? -
Hey mravn,
in Hong Kong, where i am at the moment.
Average price is around HK$ 8,000, which is a pretty good deal with the current HK$ - currency rate. -
thats cool, 32 gigs would go fast though.
-
It sure would go faster but my concern is:
i'm looking for an all-rounder 14'' laptop good enough to handle a bit of gaming once in a while, some video editing and some light multi-tasking as well as daily tasks (browsing the web....) with decent battery life.
Will this Y460 be up to the job or do i need to look for one with an i7 processor?
lets' say one similar to the Asus N82JQ with better battery life though: i7 Processor 720QM, 4GB, NVIDIA GT335M, Blu-Ray, HDD 500GB,7200rpm -
How are the keyboards on the Y460 for typing? One of the main reasons I'm considering the Y460 is for the keyboard. I'm not a fan of these chiclet type of keyboards. Are the keyboards similar to those of the old Thinkpad keyboards?
This "noise" that many users seem to be reporting, How annoying is it and is there a fix for it?
On one of the reviews, I read that you get a better experience watching movies by turning the ATI card off. Is that the same experience for owners here too?
I can't find much information about the "LenovoCare Notebook Protection". What exactly does it cover? Is it worth paying for it? -
The keyboard is rather mediocre. Has a good deal of flex on right side and when typing fast it does get slightly noisy. It does make typing easier though; the keys are rather large and spaced closely together and I type faster on this than any other laptop I've had. It's not like the older Thinkpads (Assuming old means about a T61) those are smaller and have an almost island feel to them.
I don't see why the ATI would make any difference when watching a movie....
LenovoCare:
-Following problem determination with the 24x7 365 day a year warranty Help Center phone support team, if problem is not resolved a technician will be dispatched to your location.
-Accidental Damage Protection provides repairs and a replacement (if needed) for damage resulting from drops and spills.
-Accidental Damage Protection is a depot delivered service. Depot repair at our configuration center allows for complete repair and testing diagnostics to provide for a complete repair. -
Yea, I had a Thinkpad T60 and and it was easy to type on that one! It's good to know that you can type fast on this one, that's one of the things I wanted to hear.
It was on the laptopmag review where it said on ATI, movies seemed blockier?
Are you happy with yours? any problems other than the lid not closing fully? How is the screen for watching movies? I can't find any alternative to this laptop. I'm looking for a laptop with non chiclet keyboards as I mentioned here Lastly, any chance of any coupons that might show up in the next week or two? -
The Acer 4820TG is a strong competitor of the y460. -
AboutThreeFitty,
over here in hong Kong, the config for the Y460 is i5 450 M 2.4 GHz, Ati 5650, HDD 500 GB 7200rpm + 32 GB SSD, 4gb ram... do you think there's a noticeable difference between the i5 450 and i5 520 that you have?
Is the Y460 versatile enough to handle a bit of everything (some gaming, some video editing in HD 720p, Photoshop...) ?
I also looked at the Acer 4820 TG (no SSD, 2 gb ram) which looks much nicer than the Y460 (over here we only have the Y460 with the white keyboard).
Any refresh for the 4820 TG soon? -
)
I would see what people say in the 4820TG lounge to see what they have to say, I have no idea. -
ahh this is so cool, a Y460 from the lenovo outlet for 595.85$ bux, If only I had enough to get it! Theres only 1 in stock hah! So funny...they keep 1 in stock, thats a bit pathetic... I hope they have some in a few months so I can pick one of these up! Its kinda funny you can get the m11x refurb for about the same amount, Ill defentlly want both of these when I can get them!
-
Hi all, I've seen this question asked before, but I didn't see an answer for it: What model Broadcom bluetooth module is in the Y560?
I got a Y560 from Fry's some weeks ago, and only now realized that it doesn't come with bluetooth.. for some reason. Preferring an internal solution rather than use up a USB port, can someone with a Y560 that has bluetooth look in Device Manager and tell me what the model number for the Broadcom bluetooth module is? It should say something like BCM-xxxx.
Thanks! -
BCM2070 says on mine.
If I have the Lenovo Y560 with switchable graphics, what would be a better CPU than my current i3? I would like a Quad, but I read something about them not having integrated graphics. In what way would that affect my laptop? -
Just purchased a Lenovo Y560...wish it could get here by RIGHT NOW!:
Paid: $950 after tax (rings up at $879 with the proper coupon)
Lenovo Y560 - 06465BU
Intel® Core™ i7-740QM Processor ( 1.73GHz 1333MHz 6MB )
Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730 1GB
4 GB PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM 1333MHz
15.6" HD LED Glare 1366x768
500GB 7200
Bluetooth Version 2.1 + EDR.
Intel Wireless Wi-Fi Link 1000
Now I just need a new game to test out on this puppy! -
How did you adjust your screen settings? In software? These laptops don't appear to have hardware color and contrast adjustments like on the desktop monitors I am used to using.
The y460 definitely does not have the best monitor, but few laptops these days have any that are decent. My desktop monitor is a 24 inch 6 bit TN panel from a couple of years ago, and it has FAR better color and contrast even though it was by no means a high end panel at the time (like an IPS or S-PVA panel). -
I would pay out the nose for higher resolution and higher quality screens. -
