Thanks. Got my Y460 today. I'm so excited. It's replacing a three-year old HP 13" that has cracks on the screen, has weak gaming performance and running hot. The only thing I'll miss is the fingerprint reader, since I didn't have to type passwords.

I'm going to install Win7 Ultimate 64 and will take your advice.

I was close to getting the 4820tg but didn't like what I read in reviews (shoddy build quality, flex, heat, key board, etc). Admittedly, there was a $100+shipping difference in cost but seems worth it.

Alright. I've reloaded the Y460 with Win7 ultimate. My only problem right now is I cannot connect to my wireless router (unless wired connection). It is a 2.4ghz b/g router, a Netgear 614 Router. I also tried with a Netgear 3500 router. My HP laptop can connect just fine. But the Lenovo not so much.

The laptop also runs pretty hot at certain times.

Also the one-touch rescue takes forever.

Besides the wireless issue, my only other complaint is the slow hard drive. It takes forever to boot. It would've been better if they went for a 320 72000rpm.

Solution Solved esata external hdd connection at least for me.

I was trying to find answers to this problem all over last night when I got my new hdd and case.

Got a 500gb sata WD Blue Caviar with a Rosewill RX-358 case from newegg

In bios the achi was enabled

    -start
    -right click Computer -> manage
-under Storage -> click disk management
    WD hdd showed as unpartitioned

Right click on your hd name, in my case WD (something something)
    Convert then create partition

from there it was a little strange because I never did this before. But I couldn't partition it until I did convert to MBR disk or GPT. Researched around and I guess MBR was the right one to do. Then create partition.

Finally backed up my hdd and did a system recovery back up.

Never had a sata connection external hdd before with a sata drive. My old one was a pos of IDE hdd with a usb connection.. slow as balls compared to this. Ridiculous.

Only thing is, I can't do "safely remove hardware". It doesn't show up anywhere and I searched around and tried the run command. But nothing.. can't figure this out. I hate the feeling of just pressing the power switch off without "safely remove hardware"

anyone got any idea on what to do?

No worries, super. I got it working eventually. Maybe, it was a restart or it was a driver update.

The laptop is now where I want her to be. I installed GGPO and SFIV, my network simulator software. Perfect. I was able to get 60 fps in SFIV with models and bg set on high.

It's too bad Lenovo closes the config (faster processor and hard drive). I was thinking of overclocking the GPU, but I don't want to lap it or increase the heat.

The only real gripe is the slow hard drive. They should've seriously included a 7,200 RPM hard drive (300GB) instead of the 500GB 5400. It takes forever to boot.

But definitely a fierce laptop. Glad, I got it instead of going a hundred dollars cheaper for the cheapie.

May I say the same about the 500 GB 5400 rpm? It's very very slow, although it's a WD Scorpio Blue, one of the best 5400 HDDs. I searched a ton for a 7200 WD Black here in Romania, but I got no chance of finding one. Maybe in the future, if I get some courage for installing everything again. :(

One problem I got no solution for it's the annoying auto dim brightness. I have no option in Energy Management to disable the ALS (Auto Light Sensor) and the little battery sensitive button doesn't work (I did a fresh Windows install).

    Any ideas?

for the ALS, are you sure you went to the right place?

energy managerment > gear icon between 'i' and '?' > smart controls

    for the touch sensitive buttons

download and install energy managerment, synaptics (touchpad) drivers, onekey theatre, slidenav (for the slider)

This gear icon, does it appear only after pressing the battery button? I wouldn't like to install all the garbage/useless Lenovo apps.

This appears when I enter Energy Management.

Would you believe I have it installed, but it looks different and doesn't have the option of disabling ALS? It's the one above.

Can you give me a link for it? The one you gave me doesn't have it.

    Alright...

Unplugged my laptop, turned it off, and here I am in class now. My touchpad is acting up out of nowhere - I usually use a mouse at home, but I don't bring it with me to class. Acting up symptoms: randomly jumping to other areas of the page, right clicking when I don't right click, general bugginess like that.

Just tried reinstalling the driver through the Lenovo site, said I have a more recent version installed already. What could be causing the issue, if not the driver?

Has anyone been able to completely disable ATI powerplay? Mine keeps clocking the video card down to 300 mhz for core and memory. This stops if I disable powerplay, but powerplay keeps re-enabling itself. This means that I have to manually set the clocks back up every time that I want to play a game, because it does not manually clock the card higher even when the laptop is on "high performance," plugged in, and in a game. I think the setting resets every time I switch the graphics. I am on the 10.7 drivers.

So, if any of you recall, I was having issues with my old Viewsonic 20" monitor and getting a good connection via HDMI-DVI....

Today I went out and bought a beautiful new Samsung P2370HD. The monitor is recognized instantly, with either HDMI-HDMI or HDMI-DVI connection which solves my first problem. The issue now, is the output looks like crap! There is no sharpness to the display, words are fuzzy, and movies looks terrible.

I made sure I updated monitor drivers, had clear type on in Win7, changed the sharpness on the monitor, all to no avail....

Am I missing something? I bought this as the display at Fry's was absolutely beautiful, picture was sharp and clear and text was crisp as well.

Any advice you guys may have would be greatly appreciated, otherwise this thing is going back!

    Thanks as always!

yes on dvd drive, you can download the hardware maintenance manuals from lenovo support to get the specific component id's to match them up, its in same location as user guides

i believe both machines use a generic laptop drive 12.7 mm with a custom, removable bezel.

the gotcha: both machines use a tiny L mount bracket to screw the dvd/obhd caddy to the bottom of the case/chassis. if you are gona replace your dvd drive make sure to move the bracket to the new drive/caddy, and put the screw back in, or else it may fall out :)

here is the part # (last number on the right is lenovo part number) from the y560 hardware maintenance manual:

Well geez, my monitor issues don't seem to have ended....

Eevrything looked good, until I moved my laptop downstairs to watch a movie on our 42" Vizio. Everything looked fine, movie over, brought laptop back upstairs and plugged back into new monitor. Now it doesn't want to use the entire screen....

After an hour online with Samsung, who was ZERO help, I am beginning to wonder if I am having issues with video drivers or not? Seems strange that I can't connect easily to my 20" with a HDMI-DVI connection, seems to only work sporadically. Now my HDMI-HDMI won't fill up the entire screen, starting to feel like it could be driver issues, could it be HDMI drivers or video drivers?

Well, I figured it out, sort of... there are apparently some issues with ATI CCC and drivers. I found a way to get my screen stretched when it's at 1680x1050, which is livable, but can't get it to work at 1920x1080. Tried a couple of recommended registry hacks and a scaling fix program, but they aren't helping me get it all the way there.

I thought I read one article where it said that, believe it or not, Nvidia tools might fix it. I need to find that one again.

are in in Extend Mode, Projector only mode or Duplicate mode?

    expected behavior:

    Extend:

internal screen will run at 768
    external will be OFF

    Duplicate:
    internal runs at 768
external runs at 768 (external will look like crap)
once u change to Duplicate mode in win7, it will default the displays to "multiple displays" and resolution CANNOT be set independently for each display in this mode.

    Projector only:

    internal screen is off
external monitor can be set to Max resolution supported by monitor-1080p.

to switch between these modes is a shortcut of Windows Key+P

which one are u using ?

    on a non-related topic i put in a 620m tonight into my y460..could not wait :)

was a snap used arctic 5 for goop, all in all took 30 mins. longest time drain was cleaning off the old goop.

    3dmark went from 6600 to 7000 (1280*1024, with intel 160ssd)

played l4d 2 at 1080p on max settings for about an hour, ran a couple 3dmark runs and here are the goods:

So i just received my y560 after a mobo replacement at the repair center and the temps are phenomenal!

    i3 330m + 5730 / on bios 54 (lowest configured y560)

temps before i sent it in for repair were (bios 58):
CPU idle 50C and Load 78C
GPU idle 52C and Load 75C
    HDD idle 40C load 41C

Temps AFTER repaste and mobo replacement (bios 54):
    CPU idle 38C Load 64C
    GPU idle 40C LOAD 64
    HDD idle 35C load 40C

*awesome job by the repair tech in Texas*

I was wondering what are your guys Temps for y560 or y460?

    updated temp results attached..
    my config is Y-460: i7-620m, 160gb intel ssd, 6300wifi

the max comes from overclocking the 5650 to 720/940 which got me 7900 in 3dmark06 at 1820*1024
min comes in "high perf" power mode with radeon set to power play on.

on a related topic, i am selling the i5-520m processor from my y460 since I no longer have a need for it.
this thread has been kind to me so if any posters from this thread want the chip, i will give u a deal if you are interested if u pm me.

Well, I got my Scorpio Black in the end. Boot times are lower, but not spectacular (compared to the WD Scorpio Blue I had before). I'll see how it goes in applications.

Now I get lower WEI score from the memory, instead of the HDD. It's 5.7 for memory vs. 5.9 for HDD. Weird or not?

My maximum temperature sometimes crosses 80 when playing demanding games like Mafia 2.

Is that a cause for worry? Should I get myself a cooler?

A cooler would help a little bit, but 80c is still a reasonable temperature.

I read about the display ants, but I couldn't find any on my new Y560. Could it be because I got lucky second time and "hit" a LG display? First was on my previous (stollen) Vostro 1500. :D

If someone with a y460 would do me a favor, could you check your system and post what lan device it uses? I think it's a broadcom but forgot what model/version. I have osx as a project atm and can't check myself. TY ahead of time = ).

Will a new Y560, if I purchase one from Lenovo, come with the most recent BIOS, video drivers, etc.?

Can anyone tell me how can I setup so that Windows starts with Power-saving GPU instead of the Ati? It always starts with the ATI card.

Deciding on between a acer 3820tg and y460. The acer overclock's well to almost 10k in 3dmark06 coupled with an i5, how does the y460 overclock with gpu? What kinda 3dmark vantage scores does the y460 get? Is a cooling pad needed with the Y?
