glad to hear your enjoying the laptop, my wireless has been nothing but perfect out of the box with no changes in settings. Cant tell you what you might wana check on that, but maybee your router settings if you type in 192.168.0.1 in the browser, and open up some ports possibly?

Does anyone have problems with new MSN maybe? It just flickers on both cards, discrete one and switchable one.
-
Just posted this to the official forums, would love if any of you have any ideas as to what may be wrong:
-
Theres obviously a driver conflict somewhere there. I would look into finding a forum for your specific harddrive and post your problem there. I have been wanting an esata harddrive but not many brands are out there after searching.
-
Everything I can find from the company says that the drive should be ready to go right out of the box - win7 is supposed to have all the drivers I'd need already, as I'm using the built in eSata plug and not an expresscard.
I checked BIOS and I'm in AHCI mode, like I should be... something makes me think that it's either a Win7 issue or a BIOS issue. I saw no option on BIOS to enable/disable eSata. -

Shouldn't that be 192.168.1.1? -
Hi, just wondering whether people recommend the Y560. I think I am going to buy it with these specs:
Intel ® Core ™ i7 720QM 1.6GHz
15.6" diagonal high definition LED Display (1366x768)
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730 graphics with 1GB DDR3 dedicated graphics memory
4GB DDR3 memory
500GB Serial ATA hard drive
Would this be powerful enough to play latest games + HD video editing well?
Also, please could you tell me whether it looks good or not? The general appearances. The one with this pattern: (and what is the general build quality like please?)
-
maybee where you live...?
Also that laptop would play all the newest games with ease. -
It'll play any game you throw at it at medium to high settings. It will handle HD with ease but if your a serious video editor you may want to plug it into a higher res screen.
Why do want to know what others think of the look? You're the one who will have to look at and use it. -
Alright that sounds brilliant. Yeah, the only thing that put me of it was that it only had a 1366 x 768 screen instead of a 1920 x 1080 resolution. However I am not a serious video editor, I just like to edit videos from time to time.
Also, I am quite into the looks of laptops (god knows why) and as this laptop isn't available in the UK (will be getting from US) I can't see it for real.
And just wanted to know what most people think about the looks.
May I ask as well what are the main cons/dislikes of the Y560?
And one last question, is the HDD easily accessible to upgrade to a SSD and is it possible to install 2 HDD's by replacing the DVD drive?
Thanks. -
The design is only easily viewable in direct or strong lighting. Most of the time you will barely notice it.
You already touched on one big negative people have of it. The screen is so-so. Actual owners will have to chime in about heat, build quality, etc.
You can pop out and replace the hard drive in no time. You can also replace the DVD drive. This is what I was looking at getting for the y460: 2nd HDD or SSD Caddy - Lenovo Y460, Y550, Y560 (replace optical) [OBHD-SATA12-SATA-BU] - $44.75 : NewmodeUS, Hard Drive Caddys for Notebooks (Works for both of these laptops.
I think this best shows the design in normal light:
-
Thanks very much for that information and the picture, definitely shows the pattern clearer then any other image I have seen so far, heat shouldn't be too much of a problem with me as I will not be using this laptop for heavy gaming very often.
That is very good news about the HDD and ODD as I would love to replace the drive with a small SSD and then have a larger hard drive in the ODD as I don't use the disk drive very much and can always get an external one.
I think I will most likely order the laptop tomorrow and from what I have read I am looking forward to recieving it.
-
I've gotten several compliments on how my Y560 looks. I like that the design is only viewable sometime. Honestly it's a pretty good looking laptop and I feel that it was fairly well laid out as well. It is a fingerprint magnet but oh well, that happens with gloss finishes.
You asked about the build quality in another post... I've owned mine since about April of this year. Only now am I starting to see one issue with the build and that is with the Left Screen Hinge. It pushes up on the plastic around it from within the laptop, causing a very noticeable bulge. Recently it's begun causing the plastic to pop out of place. I can easily push it back in to place but I feel like that shouldn't be happening period. I plan on trying to fix it somehow, be it with epoxy or by going in to the laptop and fixing the hinge. Besides that one thing (That's hitting me 8 months in to ownership), the build quality is great. Honestly I am not the most gentile with this laptop - I cart it to and from class without a neoprene sleeve typically; I would expect it to start showing wear and tear i.e. hinge issue.
EDIT: ThreeFitty, is that keyboard on that Y560 backlit?! :O -
I don't do video editing but for latest gaming it works beyond my expectations. Can run Crysis on medium quality smoothly which is a big accomplishment. Plays most of my games flawlessly without low fps. Plays HD videos fine too.. The build quality is not the best but the specs and prices makes up for it.
-
Okay, sounds like the build quality is not the best, but as you say the specs and price make up for it! Thats great about the looks (apart from the fingerprints
).
Seems that I have nothing to worry about performance wise then.
I have just purchased the laptop, but will probably take a while to come as I am in UK and its coming from the US.
Thanks very much for everyones help, it is much appreciated.
-
Camera flash.
I have been looking for backlit mod, but it seems to be a lost cause.... -
For anyone who would like to know the cause of the hinge issue, I have photos and an explanation to go with them
-
What hinge issue?
And I'm sure people would appreciate a write up. -
for a second there, i thought it was backlit keyboard...
atleast now u know what it would look like.
Did you buy that optical caddy? mind if you take a pic of it, i want to see how it sits in the laptop (flush with the laptop or does it stick in/out ?). -
Quick question,
when my laptop arrives, would it be sensible to reapply the thermal paste on the gpu and cpu? - are they easy to get to and does it make a big difference? (I would use Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound)
also, when it first loads I would like to create an image of the laptop at that state, is there an option to do this at the boot up or can you suggest a program/way that is simple to do?
Thanks! -
It will come with something called OneKey Recovery, which will create a series of bootable DVDs that will return the system to factory condition.
-
There's a hinge issue with the Y560... people complain about it a fair amount.
I'll do a writeup in its own thread tomorrow if I feel up to it -- surgery at 6:30 AM -__-
Very easy to get to, I'd say. If you want your laptop to run a bit cooler than it would be sensible but temperatures don't get too high with the stock paste. -
no I wouldnt, what it can benefit from tho is the intake for the gpu/cpu fan is centered in the middle of the bottom of the chasis, if its taking air a few mm off of a hard surface the temps will go up about 10-15 degrees cause all that hot air gets trapped and the fan dosnt pull as much cool air but if you prop it up a bit it wil cool significantly more. My temps droped from 85 celsius under heavy load to about 70 or so.
I cant account for others about the hinges but I havent notcied anything yet. The laptop is designed so that the screen when held at a upside down diagnle it comes apart by 2-3 centimeters. It dont have any type of mechanism that locks it in place. Also when carrying this laptop its better to carry it from the opposite side you would normally carry a laptop cause the screen bends in a bit, its just its design though and it feels totally comfortable carrying it by the end of the lcd and near the touch pad that end... Im really loving myn though, Iv had it for about 2 weeks now and it hasnt given me one iota of letting down, nothing no bsod's, windows errors, hardware malfunctions or anything that would frusterate me in the least bit. Its a very great great laptop and I dont think I Would change anything on it. -
I got my Y460 back from Lenovo and they fixed it, but I no longer have a need for it so if anyone is interested in buying it I'm selling for $750. It's in virtually brand new condition and just got a new motherboard.
-
I am waiting for the pictures, to confirm my opinions on the built quality.
-
The hinges are sturdy and well built on my y460
Same with the demo model at Microcenter and that one is y560
It's all good. Getting wireless n speeds wouldn't have made much of a difference anyway. I'm getting around 25-30 Mbps on y460 and 40 Mbps on desktop. Most servers wouldn't let me download at those speeds anyway
-
Tomorrow. I'm not feeling up to it currently, and the photos need some basic editing (drawing lines for clarification etc)
-
Besides the hinge issue that I'm just now seeing after 9ish months of ownership, I have yet to have any issues. They really are great laptops.
Link for those who want to see the hinge issue explained:

Is there a fix for it, or good way to reinforce the plastic right from the beginning to stop this from happening?
and yay, my y560 was dispatched today.
-
is 5730 powerful enough for 3D ? I wonder if I should bother with 3D version ...
-
I suppose it depends what your going to be doing with it like anything. Im not sure how the ati's 3D compared to nvidias but I would assume its not as system hungry. A laptop like that is extreamly niche, especially the ATI version of 3D cause it isnt actually using new technoligy like nvidias is. It is one sweet laptop though, thats for sure.
-
The 5730 is powerful enough to run nearly all modern games at medium or higher settings, at least at the screen's resolution of 1366x768.
-
Kind of. When playing games in 3d your performance will be cut by nearly half. So if your getting 60fps in game, then you'll get 30fps when playing in 3d.
Not worth the performance drop and price hike IMO.
(I'm not sure if that is for all games or just a few.) -
Oh, you meant 3D as in things pop out of the screen. Lol I feel dumb. I was thinking 3D as in 3D acceleration and my mind was going "isn't that the whole point of a dedicated graphics card?"
-
Ehh I don't think 3D is really worth it. Are the 3D effects of the game really worth hundreds of dollars? I rather get that feature on a desktop.

Has anyone tried to fit Y460 in an Ideapad 13" sleeve (s135)?
Really like the black sleeve with orange accent, but too bad that it's "specially designed" for U350. -
hi .. um i bought my lenovo y460 a few months ago .. it was working perfect until a few weeks ago ..
i started experiencing really long boot times ... sometimes even 5 - 10 minutes!!
so i decided to restore the OS to the original factory one ... i did so and it got better ... it would take about 1 minute to startup ... now it's started to get slow again ... not as slow as before .. but pretty slow .. and i havnt installed anything on it ... i have fragmented my hard disk .. when the "Starting Windows" note comes up on boot it takes ages for the 4 dots to come together and form the windows logo.
and im experiencing another problem, when i try to checkdisk (chkdsk) after the pc reboots it automatically cancels the disk check after 2 seconds (on the count down)
what should i do?
i think my hdd is working fine coz when it boots up it's as fast as it was the day i bought it -
Sounds like a malware related issue - try scanning all of your files using multiple virus scanners. If that doesn't work try downloading HiJackThis and then head over to MajorGeeks Support Forums - Powered by vBulletin and post your log. They won't stop trying to help until your problem is fixed.
Thats just my guess and I'm not so good with all this computer stuff, so knowing me I'm probably not right.
-
This is going to sound a bit weird but do have have any USB ports plugged in when booting? This can sometimes cause Windows to boot slow by trying to read the USB devices before booting. I would also check your hard drive with hdtune or any other hard drive checking software.
It does sound like a virus or malware as irTim said... -
laptops honestly do weird things some times but this sounds like its a common occurance. sometimes laptops do weird things and fix them selves by them selves mysteriesly, it happens to me all the time with hardware and especially with software like website development. Cache gets stored and wont do things right but after some time it fixes it self all by itself lol.
A quick switch to a cheap stats2 harddrive would be the obvious first thing to check. It also could be some type of capacitor or transister malfunctioning on the mobo. If you havent downloaded anything like you say then using a malware or spyware should not have any effect. You might want to reseat memory oh one cause of this is gunk also getting cloged up in the laptop. For some reason when a laptop has a bunch of dust and particles it can cause things to slow way way down for what ever reason. Use a can of air and blow out your vents while the doors on the bottom of the laptop are unlatched so the dust has a place for it to go.
Also check your windows 7 settings for things that can cause this which this very well could be. If you miss something in win 7, just one setting can cause results like this. Its very easy to do if your not careful with windows 7. Check things that would slow the computer down like having untimely downloads from updates/backups also changes in the registry can cause things like this. Old drivers, theres many things... -
Does anyone know if the Y560 has detachable keys on the keyboard? My R is kind of jammed.. hoping I can fix it.. Don't want to pull it out and break it :/
-
I'm 99% sure the y460 and y560 share the same keys and mine pop right off.(Just be semi-gentle with it.)
-
Yup just tried it.. pops out really easily.. Found a piece of rice in there
-
Do you eat rice?
If not, the person who built it must have been on a lunch break.
-
Haha yup I do.. not sure how it got in there though.. those cracks are really small..
-
hey guys! looks like the new ideapads are going to be launched soon...
Lenovo Y470 and Y570: The Fastest-Booting Windows PCs In the Land
guess a new thread will be started soon for the y470s/y570s! -
No wonder Lenovo was having crazy sales lol. (right before CES, go figure)
I like the brushed aluminum look.. but that's about it.
For the price I got the best deal of any laptop with similar spec to my y460 and I plan on keeping it for a long time
-
I'll buy one of those discounted from the outlet in a few years when my $700 y560 stops being fast enough
-
that's what she said
