Lol in May 2011 thats a long time from now. The specs aren't that impressive. I rather wait another year to upgrade when the new architecture for Intel's CPU comes out. That GeForce GPU is definity not nessecery to play games at a the current resolution unless they come out with a bigger resolution.

Anyone really nervous about how they hold their laptop? I get really nervous grabbing the laptop by the lid when its closed, feels like if I put too much pressure on it the screen might crack..

EDIT* Just to clarify myself a bit more I meant the generation of i7s after the second generation which is coming out. I feel the second generation of i7 is a pointless upgrade for those with descrete graphics and already an i7..

Someone said their y460 or y560 had so much weight on top of it in their backpack that they could see the outline of keyboard on the screen. I haven't heard of anyone snapping or damaging their screen.(Doesn't mean it hasn't happened though. ;) )

My brand new Y560 arrived today after what seemed like an eternity of waiting (I could of got it yesterday but was out when it got delivered :()!!! Anyway, I am extremely pleased with it, the speed of it is brilliant, so far have not tried any gaming with it yet but will probably do that over the next few days! Only downside is the build quality - really hate how flimsy it feels, but I guess that is made up with the brilliant specs for the brilliant price! :D
Now all I need to do is buy a decent rucksack for it, am I right in thinking that it will be able to fit in a 15.4" Swissgear laptop rucksack?

Well I meant just taking it around the house. I like holding laptops by putting my grip on the lip and the bottom and it feels as if I'm going to crush it lol..

    Troll me more..

I'm getting 58C~ at normal conditions and 72C~ when gaming is this normal? Im also using a antec coolerpad, the laptop is elevated..

The North Face has good backpacks. Should consider putting the laptop in a sleeve before putting it in the backpack for extra protection :)
How is the antec coolpad? Thinking about getting a Zalman one.

Honestly I can't tell a difference. Its design is very nice.. Elevated design with dual fan. Aluminum plate with wholes and ventilation on the sides. Zalman are very nice too. For fans and cooling I prefer Antec Coolermaster Zalman and Thermaltake..

I just got my Y560 2 days ago and I've been having really bad problems with the Wi-fi. It constantly drops my connection and sometimes goes at pretty slow speeds. It's gotten a bit better after I uninstalled and then reinstalled the Intel wifi drivers, but I'm still getting a dropped connection every so often. My other laptops are not experiencing this problem and my y560 has worked perfectly when I used an ethernet cord. Any suggestions?

I've already uninstalled readycomm, disabled ipv6, and reinstalled the intel wifi driver. I really love this laptop and how beastly it is, but I don't feel right investing $900-$1000 in a laptop that can't even let me browse the internet without interruptions.

funny my wireless intel 1000 card works great. What kind do you have exactly? I just downloaded 25 gigs 50 feet away the other night and all went fast and well. Online gaming 50 feet away as well works just like I was hooked up to the ethernet cat5 cable.

    Intel Wi-Fi Link 1000 BGN

At my house it's been dropping every 10-20 mins and the speed slows down considerably every so often. I went to my university and tried it there and had better luck (connection never dropped), but the speed was still very slow.

Edit: Just ran a few tests and my Y560 is getting speeds of 3mb down, 1mb up (fastest I've gotten so far) while my other 2 laptops are getting 14mb down, 5mb up.

My Y560 seems to be making this incredibly high pitched noise, does anyone know what is causing this and how I could fix it please?

Edit: After restarting my computer it doesn't seem to be making the noise anymore.

Also, do these temps seem normal when idle?

    ~ 50C GPU

    Thanks.

hi itrim, those temperatures depending on what your doing seem fine. When your temps start reaching over 90 celsius is when you can run into problems with heavy gaming etc...Idealy when doing intensive aplications temps can hover between 75-85 celsius and with extra moding can be brought down to 65-78 or even bit lower.

The noise is often referred to as the "CPU whine" although its the other parts of the laptop causing the sound. Your laptop sounds like my y460; hit or miss. A lot of laptops from different companies have this problem. A couple of people said that 2.4GHz wireless mice can cause it. (Mine does it regardless.)

As far as heat: Sounds just fine. You have the i7 right? Just make sure your CPU settings are Auto or adaptive as having the setting on High can cause unneeded heat for no reason.

I get the CPU whine or something like it, sometimes, but only when listening through headphones, and it goes away when I unplug and replug them.

Thanks for the information guys, I had a USB mouse that might have been causing the problem - but it is not doing it at the moment so no idea.
I changed a value in 'regedit' that I think might have helped it as well as in the N53JF owners lounge it says that doing that will help.
Also, yes I do have the i7 so my heat seems fine. :)

Edit: Anyone know whether its possible to upgrade the screen to a FHD one?

There are some ppl in the xps 14 dell section changing there screes to 1600x900 screens, I would imagine its possible, but this size is probably more then likely proprietary with the lcd. I dont know if it would fit but heres the link( link). It was on the 13th page of this thread( link). Screen costs 89 bux.

The website offers LCDs at 15.6' inches too. Perfect for the Y560. I'll take one with matte finish and 1600x900 resolution. Worthy investment for about $100.
Your second link doesn't work. You didn't put in the link for the code.

lol thats never happened to me, I put it in there again. From what I read on that thread I linked it says the matte screens are 200 nit brightness while the non matte are 260 which is very bright. It takes a birghtness of 850 nitts to be fully readable in direct sunlight. Most lcds are under 200.

The procedures look fairly easy on the XPS, but if you look at the display design on the Y560 its very complicated, seems like you have to remove the hinges too :/

So matte screens aren't really worth it? I believe there are matte screens that are brighter, my desktop monitor is very bright, its probably very expensive though..

I wouldn't say its not worth it, 200 nits is still decent enough and if having no glossy look or reflection is what you want then its a viable alternative.

As for replacing the lcd, you might get away with just removing those nubs on the screen and being able to put it in there without even having to mess with the rest but I haven't checked. I did take apart the keyboard and touch panel yesterday. There are some screws underneath the battery compartment that need to be removed before you can do this. From there it gives you a good idea what you will need to do with the hinges if you need to unhook them from the body. I didn't see a way to unlatch them from the quick glance i had.

an FHD screen would be TIGHT...and the 5730 would handle it with ease. Perhaps not while gaming, but you can always res down for that.

well 1600x900 really isnt all that many more pixels to push then a 1368x768 screen. When looking at screen density the later number makes the screen alot bigger or smaller viewing wise. 768p to 900p really doesnt add all that much but its noticeable enough and rare enough as it is now to warrant it.

Wireless Display through intel products. Basiclly you have to have an intel hd video chipset, and intel wifi card and an intel core processor then you can hook up an netgear PVT 1000 to your tv and stream your laptop directly to the tv no wires.

Does anyone know if lenovo will be releasing EVER an extended battery for the y series? I know they have them for the thinkpads...

If so, how long does it usually take to hit ebay? Ive had good experience with ebay extended batteries and the 3 hours im getting on my y460 isnt cutting it.

You wouldn't be able to open the screen if it had an extended battery.

What kind of tasks are you doing? 3 hours is a little short for the y460. You should be low to upper 4 hour range with light tasks.

I saw a refreshed Sandy Bridge Y460 (designated Y460p) in Singapore today. Didn't have a camera so no pictures, but the basic specs are:

Intel i7-2630QM 2.0GHz (Yes, a true quad core with hyper-threading)
    4GB RAM
    AMD/ATI Mobility Radeon HD6550 with 1GB VRAM

It was retailing for SGD1498 which works out roughly to USD 1159.

Though arguably, it's still a relevant card today. And the slight core clock increase should bump performance to meet contemporary nVidia cards like GT540m.

I just received my new Y560p 4397-23U with the new Intel chip. And I have to say I'm very disappointed. Upon unboxing and pressing the power button it arrived with a dead screen. The back lighting is out. what a pssser. So back it goes and other week or two with out a note book. My X205 died due to one of the video cards going out.

I'm assuming the new Y560P's with the i7 2630QM are using the same physical chassis and the older ones and thus still likely to suffer the hinge problem?

Im fairly certain there the same design. Im not certain how ever the hinge can be categorized as a common problem as reports have not indicated this through numbers although there have been a few to recognize it.

After months of experimenting with various machines, I have decided on the new SB version of the Y460P (keyboard and touchpad are fan-freaking-tastic) and an HP DM1Z with AMD Fusion. I would have liked a Blu-ray player, but the $500 coupon I found was not available with the Blu-ray version and I really didn't want the rapid drive as I have a Vertex 2 to slap in it already. The truth is I would have probably used a Blu-ray disc less than 10 times over the life of the laptop anyway.
I can't wait to receive the Y460P and get rid of this POS HP dv6t Quad Edition. I hope I have better luck with the DM1Z or I may be turning to Lenovo again.

I purchased the Y460p and will be receiving it on Tuesday. I have started having a few doubts though.

I also was considering the HP Pavillion Quad. It seems the 15.5 inch had a few better options when the coupon was available. Backlit keyboard, metal chasis, 7200 RPM hd, blue ray disk, all for the same price as the 14 inch lenovo.

I prefer 14 inch, but I really wanted a backlit keyboard, as punching F keys and numbers seems to be an issue for me at night with these things on my lap. Does the 460p at least still have the thinklight?

Was the HP Quad you tried the new version witht he metal chassis and SB chip?

Any feeback from anyone on this matter would be appreciated.

If I changed my mind I would obviously have to just sell the lenovo.. They have raised their restocking fee's to 20% on unopened product. Ouch!

I see it was the new HP Quad you returned. Can you give me a quick review and why you were not pleased with the machine?

Seems like a really good deal on a laptop with good build quality. I am tired of plastic laptops with flimsy lids and plastic screens. Would be nice to get metal with glass for once.

Sorry about that. The ideapad logo lights up. Reading your posts above you might not be too pleased. There is no Thinkpad light and the plastic lid is extremely thin and flexes. It's not a bad laptop by any means, but a laptop isn't a "one size fits all" type of machine. You may also want to consider the Envy 14. It's a little more expensive, but it's one of the better 14 inch laptops out there.

No thinklight? I specifically called customer service and asked about a backlit keyboard and they said no, but that it did have a thinklight. I started worrying so I wanted to check with some of you guys.

It seems trivial, but I really need some sort of permanent solution for a light. I do not want to connect any sort of external light. Seems to me that by now all laptops priced in this range should have an option for a backlit keyboard.

I wonder if I can send the unit back unopened and avoid the 20% restocking fee? I would not have purchased without at least the thinklight.
