I'm looking to get a 256gb ssd reasonably soon - does anybody know of any retailers or where 256gb 22242 ssd's are actually available for purchase?

    I think I'll just wait until Black Friday. If I cant find A 256gb m.2, then I'll go with a 512GB 2.5" SSD.

    may i ask a question?
is that m.2 ngff with 128 gb used as cache (and only as cache), is not really worth? basically what is the advantage use m.2 as cache?
*i am sorry, kinda new to it, and didn't really what cache can do, except as most app like adobe lightroom etc.

and also, isn't that rather purchas 256 gb m.2, isn't that more worth purchasing 2.5" SSd and make some custom on optical drive, which make dual drive options more applicable, i mean use something like 256 gb ssd as primary drive (sata or msata maybe), and replace optical drive with ultrabay+7k1000 1tb as storage.?
i'm sorry, it's pure question without implication to offense. *i mean no offense *and sorry if there some miscom. :))

No the SC2 line can be used as a boot/system drive or cache drive. Its a regular ssd pared with some cache software. Our 256GB M.2 will only be in the $130-140 range so I think most people will choose to keep the optical and HDD in place if they can have 256GB of SSD.

Yes it can be used as both as it is just a regular 2242 M.2 SSD. The software is just an added bonus for those who wish to use it for cache.

Initial benchmarks are not everything. I don't want this to sound like a sales pitch but with the high end Toshiba flash we offer in our products your benchmarks from day one will look the same one year from now. Food for thought.

I used to deal with Runcore SSD a lot and they had certain Jmicron controlled SSD that got very hot and during the 1 year warranty period we noticed as high as a 5-8% defect rate. In most cases the heat was destroying the solder. I have no idea if this will happen with the Transcend SSD but I do know that our current MyDigitalSSD products have a 3 year warranty and we have a less than .05% defect rate.

We are waiting on A19nm Toshiba 128GB NAND chips as soon as we have them we will deliver 256GB M.2 2242. Could be tomorrow or a few more weeks we just don't know.

To be completely honest it will be more than the Transcend unit. Still working on the end price. Can't help it. We are using Toshiba Original Grade A NAND in ours. Not sure what Transcend is using but my guess is the Micron. IMHO that is the only way they can have such a low price.

Obviously it's lower than BIG ssds can do, but it can be compared to MySSD's model at least.
I would not judge that much the first 256gb model on the market.

ADATA promises better write speed, see the second page.

I was comparing it to 256GB 2.5" drives, which is a fair comparison since they both use the SATA3 interface.

Comparison is not that fair, controller chips are different due to m.2 size limitations.

Exactly, the m.2 42mm is too small that why it's very difficult to increase the size and speed. I was really hoping that Intel will make 240G m.2 42mm but looks like they will not, the Pro 1500 Series 120G m.2 42mm ssd is the only one Inteln have made so far, too bad. (why? look at the read/write speed of the 120G intel: it's 500/500 while other brands are like 400/100 or 500/150 ...)

Looking forward too see 240/256G m.2 42mm sdd from different manufactures

SIGH. I can't even get the stupid original m.2 ssd out. For some reason the screw just won't budge (I tried all sorts of screwdrivers). Will try again later this week when I have time.

    Hi everyone,

So, I finally got the mydigitalssd 256gb m.2 drive up and running as my OS drive. For some bizzare reason, I couldn't get the screw out. I ended up having to use a screw driver to get the old m.2 ssd out (probably broke it as a result) and then put the new m.2 ssd in with a spacer in place to hold the m.2 ssd. It's weird cause I've seen people on YouTube showing how easy it is to remove the screw.

Instead of Acronis True Image, I installed the m.2 ssd and formatted it in GPT, then used Macrium Reflect to clone the original y510p hdd onto the m.2 ssd. I adjusted the size of the main OS partition so that every partition of the original y510p hdd can be cloned onto the m.2 ssd. I then went to BIOS and changed the boot order, and voila! I don't plan on wiping the original HDD given that I want to be able to boot from the original HDD if the m.2 ssd has problems.

In any event, with limited use, the y510p seems FAST. The programs are loading really quick. I ran some Crystal Disk Mark test for the 256gb m.2 ssd, the original HDD, and a 2TB samsung ultrabay drive (from a Seagate Expanation). The results are posted below. As you can see, the read speed of the m.2 ssd is really good, but the write speed is a bit problematic. I'm not sure why the results are lower than the results posted on mydigitalssd's website.

Results of Mydigitalssd M.2 256gb SSD

Results of original Y510P hard drive (Samsung Spinpoint M8 1TB)
    Speeds of original hdd.png

Results of ultrabay hard drive (Samsung Spinpoint 2TB)

If anyone can shed light on improving the write speed of the SSD, that would be greatly appreciated.

So I ran the Crystal Mark Info tests again, and the write speeds are much better. I made some tweaks to the settings in Windows (such as enabling write caching, disabling indexing, etc.). The ssd is running through AHCI. In any event, the speeds are a lot more like the speeds advertised by mydigitalssd on their website:

    Test #1
    ssd speed 1.png

    Test #2
    ssd speed 2.png

    Test #3
    ssd speed 3.png

Having used the m.2 as my OS drive for the past few days, I'm pretty happy with it. I moved most of the data (e.g., documents, pictures, music, video, browser cache, temp files, outlook database file, etc.) onto the 1TB hdd, and the ssd is only being used for running the OS and programs. The ssd doesn't seem to be running very hot either (although I haven't really pushed it that hard).

In any event,. it was more expensive than the other options, but happy with it so far.

    Thanks for the review.
I guess it's a good buy compared to Transcend and Adata?

Gonna place the order real soon. Where did you get it? Amazon or Mydigital?

I ordered it from mydigitaldiscount. I don't think Amazon is selling it right now (don't think they have that much stock of the 256gb).

I can't say if it's a better buy than Transcend and/or Adata given that I haven't tried those ones. I would caution buying the Adata one as it seems like it doesn't play well with the y510p bios (some people have problems using it as an OS drive). For the transcend one, it's cheaper, but some people on Amazon have commented that it runs pretty hot. I think most people know that the 42mm m.2 ssd's performance isn't that great (see this article: AnandTech | Upgrading the SSD in Chromebook & MyDigitalSSD Super Boot Drive M.2 2242 SSD Review it's still a pretty big performance upgrade from the stock 1TB 5400rpm hdd that I have.

I don't have actual stats in terms of start-up time, but it takes shorter time for me to start my computer from shutdown now (with the ssd) than for me to start my computer from hibernation (with the old HDD). Everything in the OS just runs faster. Programs launch insanely fast. It's a significant improvement over the stock 5400rpm hdd. If you replaced the hdd with a SSD, then performance will probably be better than the m.2 ssd + the 1TB. I prefer the m.2 ssd + 1TB set-up cause I have a lot of media (music, pictures, videos, etc.).

I bought MyDigitalSSD 256GB Super Boot Drive 42mm SATA III (6G) M.2 2242 NGFF SSD - MDM242-SB-256 installed it to Thinkpad Yoga 14 (20DM) and Win are freezing from time to time, even after clean install. System is on M2 SSD, the original 1TB was formated and used as data storage.

Updated all drivers, SSD has firmware 2.9. The Win says the error is "kernel data inpage error". It seems that SSD is shut down because Wind does not start after restart and disk is not in setup. Have to power off the PC and then everything is OK until next freeze, which occurs in couple minutes or hours.
