If you want to overclock your cpu or gpu go to nvidia's site and download performance tools, it will let you overclock your notebook even if your bios is locked. Worked for me.
To Ethanh, thanx i guess there shoudlnt be a problem intalling retail vista on it then.
I feel great that now I can get a 240m Gtbut is it running on Gddr3 or just ddr3?? there would be a performance difference between those too.
-
Noone is showing love to the Y550s. I can't find any reviews. I already bought it and am waiting for it to build. But please post any reviews you find.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LKiYl-KY6mA -
I'll do a full review when mine arrives (soon) but I don't have a video cam so photos will have to suffice.
-
ppl is the gt 240m gddr3 or ddr3??????? I cant find the info anywhere, what about the 130m gt is it grrd3? If so then 240 should run on same video ram
-
people say that on lenovo.com they sell gddr3 but state that it's ddr3
But I remember somewhere something official looking said it was sd ddr3 that I had -
Ye thats the problem, I cant find anywhere on lenovo.com the specs of their graphic cards, because gt 240m and 130m gt can run at gddr3, ddr3, and ddr2.
Now since lenovo uses main ram as ddr3 that eliminates the ddr2. but it would still be better to get gddr3.
Is there like a sales rep chat anywhere on lenovo? where i can bug them with all sort of questions?
did anyone chose the slot drive feature? is so how is in on y550? -
I ordered a customized Lenovo Ideapad Y550 on 20th Sep'09 through www.lenovo.com with a rebate offer going on through 21st Sep'09.
Specs:-
Intel Core 2 Duo T6500 Processor
SUPER MULTI DVD Writer
Nvidia Geforce GT 240M
320 GB HDD
Bluetooth
Windows Vista Home basic 64 bit
2x2 GB PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM
Black glossy cover and White Palmrest
Intel WiMAX/WiFi Link 5150
The site showed original cost as USD 1354 and i got it for USD 773 ( A cool USD 581 off yipeeeeee!!!) with an extra USD 10 for 2 day shipping
I am eagerly waiting to get it shipped to me and try my hands onto it.
Can someone let me know how much dedicated memory Nvidia Geforce GT 240M offers? i read that its the successor of GT 130M and 130M has 1 Gb of dedicated video graphics memory.
Also if anyone actually tried their hands on 240M, how is the performance with Crysis-Warhead/Prototype etc... -
At AlexSochi. If you have questions, PM Mark@Lenovo here in the forums. He works in Lenovo, and he can help you. His name is in grey.
-
So the y550 is indeed a great notebook. Reading over the forum brings up some interesting points. I purchased this for CAD work and rendering to use at home, and have some portability. I have had mine for 2 weeks now, ordered early September/2009. Configured with T6400, 250gig HD, 2 gig RAM, 130m GT for $560 USD w/ shipping.
Lenovo tends to misinform about the specs, but the true specs are found posted in the PDF on their website.
http://shop.lenovo.com/ISS_Static/WW/AG/merchandising/US/PDFs/yseries_techspecs_062509.pdf
The keyboard is amazing (thinkpad quality shows here), but the gray palm rest is a fingerprint magnet. I am thinking of using some fine grain sandpaper and sanding away around the volume and power buttons, and around the touch pad to get rid of the shine, unless there is an easier way ( like the bamboo cover ) Please post link, I was unable to find anything regarding this for the y550.
I also found the GPU ran hot around 85 degrees w/ full load. I took off the heatsinks, cleaned everything and applied some Shin Etsu thermal paste to the CPU and GPU. The temp dropped by 15-20% under full load for the GPU, and 10-15% for the CPU.
This is a very impressive laptop.
I see Lenovo updated to the 240m GT a few days ago. I would have waited due to the fact it is a newer core. Otherwise the improvement is minimal. -
I want the 240m gt
If I had money, I would buy it...
I might get it if my gpu ever fries, which I doubt will happen -
@Hojuu
How long did lenovo take to ship your Y550? I have ordered on 20th Sep'09 and the est ship date is 5th Oct'09.
I have already got ants in my pantsand this wait is killing me..
i m based in Portland, OR. ] -
They usually way over estimate the ship date, mine was shipped like 7 days earlier. I received it in about 5 business days.
-
Mine took about 2 weeks.
Surprising it had an expedited shipping label from Hong Kong and customs inspection tap all over it. I didn't realize it would be fresh off the boat.
I was a little nervous given all the Lenovo nightmare order stories, but this is my 4th laptop order from Lenovo this year and I have had no problems. -
I hope mine too reaches me before the estimated shipping date. I am relocating on 10th of Oct. Probably even leaving the country.. I am not sure what assistance Lenovo offers in such cases.
Even though it is 20 days between the order date (20th Sep'09) & my relocation date (10th Oct'09), i am also kind of nervous after reading the delays Lenovo has in their shipping process. Lenovo sales representative has asked me to check back on Monday i.e. 28th Sep'09 as they might have a different status then. Currently the order is in warehouse and the tracking site shows "in process"
Keeping my fingers crossed.. -
My order was going to be automatically canceled, mind you I've not received ANY notification throughout the whole process about my card not going through nor about lenovo assuming my address was not residential. I call and insist that my address was a place of residence, but the neanderthal kept telling me that I was wrong about where I live. After 45 mins of persuading the jackass that I LIVE AT THE FREAKING ADDRESS, he says,"Okay sir, I'll put in a request to have it changed and it should take 1-2 business days to process." At this point, I was about to cancel it but waited and spoke to a sales rep in the US. He took care of everything, I even degraded my HD to 160GB and upgraded my vid card to the 240M GT and didn't pay a penny more. He canceled my old order and placed a new one on Sept 17 (with same price just with new 240M GT) on a new credit card with a different billing address so it would ship to my college address.
My card was processed and the order was sent to the factory on Sept. 18th. So my new estimated ship date is 10/01/09.
If this were high school, Lenovo would be the slacker, pot-smoking student; if he gave ANY effort at all, he'd be excelling past all other students. But currently, he's in his boxers smoking a doobie, eating cheetos, and watching reruns of family guy. -
@vvaid117
I understand your plight buddy. I also had a similar issue. My credit card didnt had enough balance and i paid by my friend's credit card. I immediately called the sales rep after payment and he guided me to call up my friend's bank and let the bank agent attach the shipping details on the transaction. Mind you here that the Billing address was that of my friend's home address and shipping address was that of my office address
So that when Lenovo calls to verify, the bank accepts the Shipping address being attached with the Credit card transaction.
I called up Lenovo sales rep the next day after placing my order i.e. 21st Sep'09 and they told me that their credit card dept. had successfully verified the billing and shipping address with my friend's bank (Chase bank in this case) and now my order has been sent to warehouse for production/assembling.
My shipping date now is 5th Oct'09. i hope they stick to that schedule.
You also please keep us posted when you get your machine. And hey congrats for getting an upgraded Graphics card GT 240M for no extra payment. -
well, I got an email today saying my order was confirmed and processed. So i go to check on it because maybe they meant my order has been shipped. I see my receipt and now the shipping date has changed to Oct 16
. Oh Oh OH, and I'm being charged $1731.00 instead of my previous price of $873.00. So I call customer service and let's just say a potato could do a better job solving the problem. Here's how the convo goes:
Mr. P: Hello, thank you for waiting. Sir your computer has been taken out of our production warehouse.
Me: That can't be, I confirmed on Sept. 21st that it reached the warehouse and was under production.
Mr. P: Yes sir, that is true but for reasons I do not know your computer has been taken out of production.
Me: Why was it taken out of production when IT WAS ALREADY IN THE PROCESS?
Mr. P: I do not know sir. My system has not given a reason, but I can send a request to send it to the warehouse and it should take 1-2 business days to process.
Me: So after you send the request, how long will it take to send the machine?
Mr. P: The production process can take up to 7-10 business days.
Me: That's what you said LAST TIME I CONFIRMED that it was in the warehouse.
So far Lenovo does not even deserve the title of being labeled a company. How it continues to exist in this competitive market is beyond me. The customer service team is incompetent and cannot provide any valuable information to any situation. There is absolutely no communication between sub divisions in the company. The service literally feels like lenovo paid some random company in India to answer phone calls. Of course they are closed Saturday and Sunday, so I don't know if I'm going to be charged 1750 bucks.
I'm about to tell lenovo to go suck a fat meat log. Dealing with this bull**** isn't worth a Lenovo laptop even if it was coated in gold and covered in diamonds.
I WILL NEVER recommend the LENOVO brand to anyone, nor will I ever purchase anything from them again. Being my first laptop, they lost a potentially long term customer. I'm giving lenovo until next week to sort things out, and if nothing happens I'm canceling and cutting all ties with this joke of a company. -
@vvaid117
How hilarious could that be
I also had that same communication with a Lenovo rep. These guys have no clue of what to say . Their systems work as if Lenovo is nowhere responsible for providing any information to them. They are completely forbidden to have any communication with the warehouse..
They even fear about talking about what goes in warehouse.. I am a Pro techie.. And this incompetent rep wanted to teach me Warehouse Management System. Saying that their is a computerized queue of which MY ORDER TOO FIRST WENT TO WAREHOUSE AND STARTED GETTING ASSEMBLED AND THEN FOR NO REASON WAS PULLED OUT OF PRODUCTION (INFACT IT NEVER EVER WENT TO THE WAREHOUSE)
This is a decent forum and I am somehow holding myself to vent out with the best abuses in the dictionary.
THEN I TALKED TO THE REP'S ANOTHER INCOMPETENT SUPERVISOR. Same sly hopeless answers.
FINAL DECISION:- COME MONDAY I AM CANCELLING MY ORDER AND WOULD NOT MIND SHELLING OUT ANOTHER 200 BUCKS TO PURCHASE SOMETHING WHICH IS READILY AVAILABLE ON EBAY AND WHICH CAN SHIP OUT OF US AND NOT FROM SOME remote Chinese village whose sales support is maintained by highly misinformed Indian call center.
hhmmpphhh
I wish if Lenovo knew how to do business and what is meant by Customer Satisfaction..
-
I'm going to give Lenovo until Oct 1st (the original shipping date), just in case this was some system error or small set back. It could've just been an error in my case because it shows I have two laptops one due on the 1st and one due on the 16th. I'm obviously not waiting til the 16th. This time I emailed them and hopefully I get a straight answer; if not, I already told them that I'll be taking my business elsewhere.
-
Hello all,
I sure hope i don't go through the same run around you guys appear to be dealing with Lenovo.. I went extreme on my Y550 with all the bells and whistles except processor... (bluetooth,240M,8700processor,500gb)... and so on, I ordered it on this last Thursday the 24th and it has an expected ship date of October 15th (almost 4 weeks)...ishy shipping!
Besides the slow shipping it sure seems that this is worth $200-300 more than competitors can build a PC of it's specs so ill wait -
You generally will run into a lot of problems if you have a shipping and billing address that are different w/ any company. Also trying to change billing or paying some part on a different card will send red flags. This will be stressed more-so if the centers are outsourced.
To avoid problems, try to keep it simple... -
I understand, but I didn't change cards and I changed my shipping address to my billing address. The only reason I changed cards later on was because lenovo didn't want to ship it to my billing address either. And I changed cards when my new order was placed because my old order was going to be canceled.
-
LOL...that is a bit confusing vvaid117.
But yes, changing CCs after order causes tons of problems in the long run, not only with Lenovo, but with other too, such as Dell and HP. -
Has anyone had their "expected ship date" actually change to an earlier date? Or am I really thinking almost 4 weeks for mine to ship
I didn't have any issues with the charge of my card and it's my home address so shipping shouldn't be an issue.....
-
don't worry, there are many customers who get their things shipped alot quicker and some have even received theirs' within a week. I am one of the unlucky few who got shafted. Keep calling.
-
So my quest to get a laptop from Lenovo Finally got over today as i called the sales support center and cancelled the order.
The rep requested me if i could wait with no estimated wait time provided by the rep.
But i preferred not to wait, given my stringent timelines of my stay in US. Finally i got almost the same config Ideapad Y550 from ebay at 21 bucks more. Though its still a bit downgraded to what i was getting from Lenovo. But at least i got to actually speak with my seller on phone and he confirmed that my machine will be shipped today itself and that too from NY through UPS. Will reach me in next 3 days.
Ordering at lenovo was like a good dream coming true which finally turned up to be a nightmare.
THANKS TO THE "AWESOME" (READ MESSED UP) SENSE OF BUSINESS LENOVO HAS TOWARDS ITS CUSTOMERS.
Remember if you love words like "punctuality", "commitment", "customer satisfaction", definitely Lenovo is not your choice.
-
I received my Y550 a couple days ago. Order on the 11th and it arrived on the 24th. Can't complain with that...they beat the quoted time they said it was going to take.
This was for a custom build.
I got a P9600, GT130M, 4GB, 160GB, SLOT drive, Intel Wifi (forgot to tick the BT button, ugh), Vista 64 Premium.
As promised I will take some photos soon -

Good to hear that ethan!
How are you liking your new laptop? -
The slot drive is just a regular dvd burner - not sure that you can get the blu-ray in a slot loading drive from Lenovo?
So far I am fairly satisfied with the Y550. I am coming from a T60 and have owned many TPs (back to the 701c days if you know what that is!) so I guess I'm a good critic. The hinges on this thing are very weak...I'm glad it's not going to be my main portable because that would be an immediate concern.
I like the subtle styling but the gloss is a bit much for me but I'll get used to it. The 15.6in LED is amazing - I just wish the res. was higher but I knew that before I bought it so cannot complain really.
I swapped out the 160GB and threw in a 60GB OCZ Vertex Turbo SSD....it flies now. I'm not really a hardcore gamer anymore so this build fits me well. I play some Left 4 Dead which runs flawless on max almost everything. Street Fighter 4 also runs with max on almost everything. No overclocking done yet so can't comment on that yet.
I got a Zalman NC-2000 (17 in. model) and it fits this laptop very well so if you're thinking about a cooling pad I recommend that one.
Really my only regret is missing out on the new video card model (GT 240M) - part of me wants to just resell this and buy another Y550 with the new card. Maybe when someone gets a GT 240M we could do a benchmark comparison to see what kind of difference we're talking about? -
I want a laptop mainly for gaming.I am confused between 2 models. So guys please help me to decide.
Also want to no wether there is any heating issue in AMD Turion?

Hi livetech. THat was fast from the other post. LOL.
For gaming, the HP is better.
AMD does not overheat, is more HPs fault with a poor design. Although AMD runs somewhat warmer than Intel, if you ever get overheat is due to HP.
Buyt that is not the point.
For gaming, the 4650HD beats the GT130M. Newer technology, smaller size, less power consumption. Overall the 4650HD is under the 4670HD considered the top of the mainstream class. -
Hey Ethan, I ordered mine last Thursday and it wasn't supposed to ship till October 15th!?! but low and behold I got a shipping confirmation today! I should have it Friday I hope and we can do that benchmarking to see the difference between the 130m and 240m!
-
thorbergdt: that would be very beneficial. One benchmark I would propose is the Street Fighter 4 System benchmark as I think its primary emphasis is on gpu capability but of course I'm open to any benchmark programs. I noticed that Lenovo updated their site with the mem configuration of the GT 240m....1GB.. That's great that you got shipping confirmation sooner than expected!
-
-
I wanna see if I can call lenovo to see if i can do anything about upgrading to the 240m
The 4650HD is kind of better than the 240m but consumes 35 watts to the 240m's 23 watts. I'm still deciding whether nvidia is better then ATI although I have the 130m gt but I do hear that nvidia is overpriced alot -
-
I am worried about the heating issue.
I want a durable gaming laptop. -
thanks Serg. Am confused between 2 models.
-
At the end of this week, I'm canceling (assuming they haven't sent it or given me a firm date) and looking into the new Core i7s from dell or a more portable computer. Hopefully from a more reliable company.
-
vvaid117, did you contact the Lenovo rep here at the Forums and see if he can help you?
-
@Serg
Nope, but I did call this morning and spoke to the only competent sales rep in the history of the company and she took care of everything in a few freaking CLICKS! She deleted my duplicate, finalized my order, and told me that it'll ship within 24 hours. So I should have it next week. To think this whole time all the idiots had to do was to provide SERVICE.
Still have a bitter taste left in my mouth from Lenovo's horrible, terrible, ghastly, embarrassing, abhorring, worthless service and if my y550 is anything but magnificent, I shall forget the name Lenovo all too soon.
I'll have an update with the 240M 4GB P8700 after I upgrade my HDD to 320GB 7200rpm. -
Good to hear everything is working now.
Keep us posted! -
Looks like my laptop shipped from Shanghai, China yesterday... really crossing my fingers UPS gets it to me tomorrow before the weekend but I don't see an on-time or estimated receive date!
-
just received an update and an extra duplicate was added again and I'm being charged $1770 this time and the best part, my laptop shipping was delayed.
[CANCELED] as of Monday morning. I already placed an order for the ASUS g50xt-v5 through best buy and it was 150 bucks cheaper and they ship the 0-1 days, so suck it lenovo. -
I got my laptop as planned on Friday morning... WOW i'm super happy, the laptop is very fast, the new 240M allows me to play Crysis on HIGH settings @ 1366x768 resolution. The display is very sharp the keyboard really responsive and speakers are good to very good. I do have one burnt pixel (black) but it doesn't bother me. The normal 6 cell battery gets me a good 3 hours easy with basic web browsing. I uninstalled a ton of crap software from the laptop but I still have VISTA on it for the time being. My laptop came two weeks early and so far im loving it!
-
nice, lucky 240m
Sry about your luck vvaid :\ -
Also anybody put Windows 7 on their Y550?? I've got one of the beta's that i think's good till next June or whatever (mainly until lenovo ships my free upgrade to 7).
-
Good news to hear thorbergdt.
Would you mind telling us how it performs?
What your thoughts are?
Shout to Y550 ideapad owners
